'We can’t give up now' - Mphahlele cautions Kaizer Chiefs as Amakhosi look to avoid unwanted record

The 30-year-old is set to miss Amakhosi's clash with Petro de Luanda, with the Glamour Boys desperate to end their winless run

Kaizer Chiefs captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele has called on his teammates to take responsibility as the Soweto giants endure a poor season.

The Soweto giants were hammered 4-0 by Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in their most recent match over the weekend with Mphahlele being sent off in the closing stages of the game.

The defeat in the Caf Champions League Group C equalled Chiefs’ heaviest defeat since the club's inception in 1970.

Amakhosi are now winless in their last eight matches across all competitions and they are placed 10th on the PSL standings - seven points above the relegation zone.

“Look it doesn’t need a rocket scientist, we know, we’re not in a good space, we’re not doing well, the results are not forthcoming,” Mphahlele told iDiski Times.

“We as players have to take responsibility for that and say, ‘guys, are we doing enough?’ Which I think we are not, we are not doing enough to help the club.

“I mean, this is one of the biggest clubs and, we’re going through what we’re going through."

The experienced defender stated that they cannot use the fact that Chiefs are currently banned from registering new players as an excuse for the team's struggles this term.

"But the only people who can take the club out of this situation is the current crop of players that are there; we are aware of the transfer ban that we have from Fifa," he added.

“We can’t give up now; we as the players have to take full responsibility, especially senior players.”

Chiefs' next game is against Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in their third Champions League Group C on March 6.

The Soweto giants will equal another unwanted record when if they fail to win the match which is set to take place at their home ground, FNB Stadium.

The longest winless run in Chiefs' history is nine matches and the Naturena-based giants have failed to win their last eight games.

Amakhosi are placed third on Group C standings with one point from two matches having started their group stage campaign with a 0-0 draw against Guinea's Horoya AC at home on February 23.

Tuchel labels Klopp a 'genius' & plays down comparisons with Liverpool boss ahead of Chelsea's trip to Anfield

The German is relishing the "challenge" of facing his compatriot for the first time in the Premier League this week

Thomas Tuchel has labelled Jurgen Klopp a "genius" while playing down comparisons with the Liverpool boss ahead of Chelsea's trip to Anfield.

Tuchel is currently preparing his Chelsea squad for a meeting with the reigning Premier League champions on Thursday night.

He will be pitting his wits against Klopp on the touchline for the first time since taking over at Stamford Bridge in January, and is looking forward to the challenge of trying to best his "outstanding" compatriot.

What's been said?

Tuchel told a pre-match press conference: "Of course there are coaches here in the Premier League when you enter the competition with not only the best clubs but also the best coaches in the world, one of them is Jurgen, clearly, and he has proven that at many clubs.

"It brings me out of bed early because it is a challenge for me to play against him. He is a genius but in the end we will not meet up for a game of tennis, we play with our teams and we have to be prepared.

"Jurgen has proved to be outstanding, he transforms any club into a unit and, at all the three clubs he has worked at, he has been a big part of them, with the heart of the fans. He is a huge success."

Asked to address the similarities between himself and Klopp, the Chelsea boss added: "I’m pretty relaxed about all the comparisons, if there are comparisons between Jurgen and me. This is what we are up for clearly.

"It stays one of the toughest challenges to play at Anfield and we want to get the most out of it."

Tuchel's record against Klopp

Tuchel and Klopp have come up against each other 14 times in total, with 10 of those outings coming in the Bundesliga.

Both men took in spells at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund earlier in their respective careers, with Tuchel also enjoying a two-and-a-half-year stint at Paris Saint-Germain before his arrival at Chelsea.

The 47-year-old has only recorded two wins against Klopp so far, alongside nine losses and three draws.

Tuchel did, however, come out on top in their most recent clash in November 2018, with PSG running out 2-1 winners against Liverpool in a Champions League group-stage clash at Parc des Princes.

Where are Chelsea and Liverpool in the table?

The winner of this week's contest at Anfield will lay down a significant marker in the battle for a top-four finish, with the Premier League title already out of reach for both sides.

Chelsea are sitting in fifth at the moment, one point ahead of Liverpool and one behind West Ham, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.

'Ask Madrid!' - Mourinho hints La Liga giants were to blame for Bale's slow start at Tottenham

The Portuguese says the Welshman has rediscovered his best form because of his "patient" approach to integrating him into the squad

Jose Mourinho has hinted that Real Madrid were to blame for Gareth Bale's slow start after joining Tottenham on loan.

Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan from Madrid back in September, having been exiled from Zinedine Zidane's squad at Santiago Bernabeu.

The winger only played a bit-part role in the Blancos' title-winning 2019-20 season, with Mourinho admitting that he needed extra time to get back to his best in north London after so long on the sidelines.

What's been said?

Asked why Bale's man-of-the-match display against Burnley at the weekend had been such a long time coming, the Tottenham boss told a press conference: “For the past two years, he had what he had in Madrid.

"Ask them. Maybe if they answer you, you can understand better why he took a while.

“Maybe to be patient was the main reason for him to reach the level he showed in the last couple of weeks.”

Bale's record at Spurs in 2020-21

Bale has only featured in 20 games across all competitions since returning to the club last summer, with just nine of those outings coming in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old has recorded eight goals so far, but five of those efforts have come in cup competitions, and he also has just three assists to his name.

However, Bale sparked back into life by scoring a stunning goal in a 4-0 Europa League win over Wolfsberger last week before putting Burnley to the sword on Sunday.

The Welshman scored twice and set up another during an impressive 4-0 home win for Mourinho's side, lasting 70 minutes before being replaced by Erik Lamela.

What's next?

Bale is in contention for a third successive start as Tottenham prepare to meet Fulham in a London derby clash at Craven Cottage.

Mourinho stopped short of confirming whether the Madrid loanee will be in his line-up, but did reveal that he is still in peak physical condition after his exploits against Burnley.

Asked if Bale will play on Thursday night, the Portuguese responded: "I think so. Starting or starting on the bench I don't know.

"He's a very experienced player. Good reaction though [after the Burnley game]."

Hudson-Odoi fit but Thiago Silva and Abraham to miss Liverpool clash, confirms Chelsea boss Tuchel

The Blues are without two players for the trip to Anfield but they will at least see one England international join up with the group

Thomas Tuchel has delivered an update on how he sees Tammy Abraham's future at Chelsea after confirming the striker will miss Thursday's game at Liverpool.

Abraham was not selected in the squad for the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Sunday, despite being fit, but now sits out the Anfield game with a minor ankle problem.

Thiago Silva has been pictured back in training ahead of the fixture, but he won't travel after not completing his latest session, although Callum Hudson-Odoi is available after coming off at half-time against United.

What has Tuchel said?

"Callum is no issue at all; he was training fully with the team yesterday," Tuchel told reporters. "Thiago made his first training with the team but did not finish the last exercise – not due to any pain or anything, just to be aware of not taking a risk.

"I assume he is in training today but he is not at 100 per cent, so he will not join the squad for Liverpool. Tammy had some problems yesterday on the ankle again, so let's see how this works out."

Does Tuchel rate Tammy Abraham?

The decision to leave Abraham out of Chelsea's squad against United raised a few eyebrows, especially as he remains the club's top scorer with 12 goals this season in all competitions.

Tuchel explained how, even when Abraham is fit, he could leave the England striker out of his squad.

"I think so, and this is my job to push him to his limits," said Tuchel. "We will not stop doing this in supporting him. This was a tough decision, but when things are like now, with hopefully nobody injured, we have these decisions to make.

"It's a part of my job which I do not like, but at the same time I like because it means we have everybody available. And then you have to make these decisions, which we normally communicate clearly.

"We have to cut it down to 18 players, so in the end it's not always a punishment or a signal to a player who is not in the squad, and in this case, it was exactly like this.

"It was not a punishment or a signal. It was just a choice from the alternatives, on which position, who starts, who could come from the bench. He lacks a little bit of luck, Tammy, not only in games but also in training.

"Once the last touch comes back, and he's fighting for it now, he will stay a player that we will push for."

What's the bigger picture of Liverpool vs Chelsea?

Chelsea and Liverpool are amongst a host of clubs between second-place Manchester United and 10th place Arsenal who are fighting for a top-four finish and Champions League football for next season.

Qualifying ensures a huge windfall of television money which can then be factored into transfers, while the competition also adds prestige to each team involved.

Liverpool are currently in sixth place and one position behind Chelsea. Both teams are chasing spots occupied by United, Leicester and West Ham.

Kakamega Homeboyz 1-2 Gor Mahia: Debutant Silva's late goal rescues K'Ogalo

The Brazilian star found the back of the net in injury time after missing two clear chances earlier in what was his first start for the club

Wilson Silva's debut goal ensured Gor Mahia picked up a 2-1 win over Kakamega Homeboyz in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League tie on Wednesday at Bukkhungu Stadium.

Christopher Masinza gave the hosts an early lead but Tito Okello and Silva ensured the champions emerged winners with their second-half goals.

Charles Momanyi did well to block David Okoth's powerful strike in the fifth minute as the hosts settled faster than Gor Mahia.

The Green Army saw their clearest chance go to waste in the eighth minute when John Macharia failed to beat Geoffrey Oputi in a one-on-one situation.

Kakamega Homeboyz's Masinza broke the deadlock in the 12th minute as Gor Mahia struggled under the hot sun to contain their relentless opponents.

Silva, who enjoyed a start ahead of Jules Ulimwengu as coach Manuel Vaz Pinto made changes, saw his effort go wide after he had been set through on goal by Kenneth Muguna.

Stephen Etyang of Kakamega Homeboyz and Ernest Wendo of Gor Mahia were yellow carded in the 30th and in the 31st minutes, respectively, as the game turned into a more physical contest.

The hosts got a 43rd-minute free-kick but Okoth's delivery was blocked by Momanyi for a corner that was eventually cleared by K'Ogalo.

Silva got another chance for Gor Mahia but his effort went off target as the Green Army spent the last minutes of the first half at Kakamega Homeboyz area in search of an equaliser.

Persistent pressure at the start of the second half paid off for Gor Mahia as Okello equalised in the 56th minute - the South Sudan international picked out a cross from Macharia and slotted past Oputi for the hard-fought K'Ogalo equaliser.

Nicholas Muyoti's side was reduced to 10 men after Thomas Wainaina was sent off in the 72nd minute following an off-the-ball scuffle. In the last 20 minutes of the game, the hosts were put under immense pressure by the more determined visitors.

Silva scored in the 90th minute to hand Gor Mahia the lead and punish Kakamega Homeboyz who had backtracked to defend deep in their area.

The Brazilian opened his goal account for the local giants in his first start and helped them pick up the vital win after losing the previous tie to Nzoia Sugar 2-1.

Kakamega Homeboyz Starting XI: Geofrey Oputi, Collins Odhiambo, Thomas Wainaina, Sylvester Owino, George Odiwuor, Stephen Mukongolo, Ali Bhai, Christopher Masinza, Stephen Etyang, David Okoth.

Subs: David Juma, Benjamin Oketch, Brian Shikanda, Bonaventure Atse, Estone Esiye, Francis Omondi, Robert Arrot, Moses Mudavadi, Ojo Olami, Derrick Onyango, Mwinyi Shami.

Gor Mahia Starting XI: Boniface Oluoch, Kelvin Wesonga, Geoffrey Ochieng, Harun Shakava, Charles Momanyi, Ernest Wendo, Samuel Onyango, Kenneth Muguna, Wilson Silva, John Macharia, Clifton Miheso.

Subs: Gad Mathews, Philemon Otieno, Andrew Juma, Fred Nkata, Joachim Oluoch, Frank Odhiambo, Sydney Ochieng, Alpha Onyango, Karm Abdoul, Nicholas Omondi, Tito Okello, Jules Ulimwengu.

Da Gama: Swallows FC have had a lot of penalties this season

Despite being handed a chance to score from the spot, the Dube Birds went on to lose their first match of the season

TS Galaxy coach Owen Da Gama feels Swallows FC’s good run in the Premier Soccer League was due to penalties being awarded to them by referees.

Swallows succumbed to their first league defeat of the season when they lost 2-1 to TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium in Tuesday’s PSL encounter.

After Ruzaigh Gamildien converted his fifth penalty of the season five minutes into the second half, the Dube Birds went on to fall to late goals by Lindokuhle Mbatha and Bevan Fransman.

“It was always going to be tough. I think Swallows have had five or six penalties this season, a lot of penalties and we knew we are up against it,” Da Gama told TS Galaxy’s media.

“We said let’s not play the offside trap. From a tactical point of view, we were on top of them from the first minute. Ten shots at goal in the first half tell you how dominant we were in the first half. I must be proud of the boys. We go down [from] a penalty, it gets cancelled. From a penalty, it becomes a corner kick.

“So against all adversity, our boys kept on fighting. This is what we want to see. We want to see that work ethic, that fighting spirit. Nobody can take away the fighting spirit from you, they can take everything else but not fighting spirit.

“So we are very happy with the result and I must say hats off to the technical team and most importantly to the players and the support staff. The nice thing about TS Galaxy is all about the completeness of the team. Everybody plays a small role in the team but it affects the results.

“Everybody, the backroom staff, the video [analysis guys]. This victory is for everybody.”

The result saw Swallows drop to fourth position on the standings from third spot.

This was also after the Soweto side was kicked out of the Nedbank Cup by Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila last Friday.

The defeat followed a five-match streak of sharing the spoils in PSL games.

How much longer will Messi & Ronaldo play for and when will they retire?

A question that, for many, is imponderable, but it is something that has certainly been on the minds of football's GOATs

When a footballer crosses the threshold of 30, it is usually not long before their playing days begin to wind down, such is the physical and mental demand of playing the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo crossed into his thirties in 2015 and Lionel Messi followed him into that twilight zone two years later in 2017.

Yet, despite time's unrelenting procession and the natural effects of aging which spare no one, the pair continue to bedazzle at the highest level for club and country.

There has been little sign of either player slowing down dramatically but, given their age profile, the question for many remains: how much longer can they play for?

How much longer can Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo play for?

We cannot be entirely certain just how much longer Messi and Ronaldo will be able to play for, because there are so many considerations to take into account.

However, with ideal conditions, it is not inconceivable that the two could play at the highest level until they are 40.

The average age for a footballer to retire, according to the PFA, is 35. Ronaldo has already passed that point, while Lionel Messi will do so in 2023.

A cynic might argue that they are in bonus territory now, but Ronaldo and Messi can take heart from the fact that there have been a number of high profile examples of individuals playing into their late thirties and even past 40.

Goalkeepers are more likely to play well into their thirties, which is not surprising when one considers the relative lack of punishment a goalkeeper's body takes during the course of a career, but there are plenty of outfielders who have defiantly ploughed through too.

AC Milan icon Paolo Maldini hung up his boots in the summer of 2009 just before his 41st birthday, Ryan Giggs played for Manchester United at the age of 40 and Javier Zanetti remained a key influence at Inter up until 40 as well. Italy and Roma legend Francesco Totti retired in 2017 at the age of 40, while Sir Stanley Matthews even played until he was 50.

The only player remotely close to Ronaldo and Messi in terms of scoring goals who is still playing is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the Swede, who signalled his intention to keep playing as long as he is healthy enough to do so, has been tipped to continue starring for Milan past his 40th birthday.

Ronaldo and Messi are both fully aware that time is running out, but it remains unclear when their respective adventures will come to an end. Perhaps understandably, they both seem reluctant to set a date.

In 2019, as he collected his record sixth Ballon d'Or, Messi conceded that "retirement is approaching", but added: "I hope, God willing, that I keep playing for many more years."

Ronaldo, meanwhile, admitted that he could not promise "20 more years", but stressed that he would give his best for as long as he could.

“As I celebrate my 36th birthday and my 20th year as a professional footballer, I’m sorry that I can’t promise you 20 more years of this," the Portuguese wrote on Instagram in 2021. "But what I can promise you, is that as long as I keep going, you’ll never receive less than 100% from me!"

How can Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi prolong their careers?

Given that Ronaldo and Messi are already excelling well into their thirties, the easy answer when it comes to the question of how to prolong their careers, is to keep doing what they are doing.

However, it is true that their bodies will naturally change as they get older, so they will have to be conscious of the need to make any adjustments to their current practice.

Healthy diet & efficient training

Both players follow personalised training regimes and specific, healthy diets, which have no doubt contributed to their success over the years.

Ronaldo consumes a high protein diet, with fish featuring prominently, complemented by whole grains and fresh vegetables, avoiding vices such as sugary foods. Messi also adheres to a strict menu, including chicken, nuts, whole grains and fresh fruit among other things.

Adapt to different roles

If the iconic duo hope to prolong their respective careers, they will have to be open to the possibility of changing their roles within their teams, and this is already happening, with both of them dropping deeper in an effort to dictate play at their pace.

The sort of lung-busting runs that characterised Ronaldo's early career are being phased out - though he is still capable of pulling them off - while Messi's penchant for dribbling has been curbed somewhat in order to minimise the risk of succumbing to heavy tackles.

Play less

It is no secret that playing a lot of games increases the risk of injury, not only from a physiological perspective, but also from a plain probability standpoint. While players like Ronaldo and Messi are used to playing every minute of every game, they will have to get used to sitting certain games out or having their time on the pitch curtailed so that their health can be protected.

Retire from international football

Tied in with previous points, Messi and Ronaldo's playing career could arguably be lengthened if they retired from international football. By its very nature, international football requires a lot of travel - particularly for Messi, who has had to take a lot of trans-Atlantic flights to play for Argentina - and that in itself can take its toll on an individual.

Of course, international commitments also mean more games and minutes on the field, which, as mentioned, can contribute to a heightened risk of injury.

Be prepared to play at a lower level

It may seem unthinkable for the likes of Ronaldo and Messi to drop below the absolute elite level and it is entirely possible that they would prefer to bring the curtains down on their careers at the top, but they could probably play as long as they felt healthy if they were willing to drop down leagues.

Performing in the Champions League or any one of Europe's top five leagues demands an intensity that simply cannot be sustained forever and they may be able to get away with playing longer if the environment they are in is less taxing.

What will Cristiano Ronaldo & Lionel Messi do when they retire?

It's not clear what Ronaldo will do when he retires from playing, but he will have no shortage of things to keep him occupied, not least his various business interests.

In 2019, he revealed that he was not so interested in coaching, meaning he's unlikely to follow in the footsteps of ex-players such as Zinedine Zidane or Pep Guardiola in becoming a manager.

He has joked that he would like to do some acting, while a more serious consideration is his desire to complete studies, potentially at university, in order to deepen his business nous.

Like Ronaldo, Messi's intentions for when he finally retires from playing are not very obvious and he could arguably follow a number of different routes.

Coaching is always an option to ex-players, while punditry and ambassadorial roles are other avenues that many high profile stars have taken.

Until that time comes, however, we may just enjoy their talents as much as we can!

Juventus 'will die on the pitch' before giving up on Serie A title, says Morata

The Spanish forward has promised that the defending champions "will fight to the end" in pursuit of a 10th successive Scudetto

Alvaro Morata says Juventus "will die on the pitch" before giving up on the Serie A title.

Juve bounced back from a damaging 1-1 draw against Verona at the end of February by beating Spezia 3-0 at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night.

That result saw Andrea Pirlo's men close the gap on leaders Inter to seven points, and Morata has vowed that they will continue to fight for Italian football's top prize until the bitter end amid an intense fixture schedule.

What's been said?

The Bianconeri striker, who scored the opening goal against Spezia, told Sky Italia post-match: "It is not an easy season: we play every three days and we have important players who are not available.

"There are no excuses, but there are still many points at stake: those who do not believe in us, do not turn on the TV and do not watch our games. We work to win.

"If we do not win, then we will congratulate the winners, but first we will die on the pitch and they will have to tell us that there are no more points to be won. As long as there is a chance, we will fight to the end."

How did Juve see off Spezia?

Spezia managed to frustrate Juve in the first half of their Serie A clash as they sat back and absorbed pressure while keeping Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.

However, substitute Federico Bernardeschi made an immediate impact off the bench by setting up Morata to slot into the back of the net just after the hour mark.

Bernardeschi was also the provider of Juve's second goal as he found Federico Chiesa in the box after cutting in from the left, with the Italian winger firing the ball home at the second time of asking after seeing his first shot saved by the Spezia goalkeeper.

Ronaldo then rounded off the scoring in the dying moments of the game after a swift counter-attack to mark the 600th league appearance of his career in style.

Morata's record for Juve this season

Morata rejoined Juve from Atletico Madrid last summer on an initial 12-month loan deal, and has since established himself as a regular in Andrea Pirlo's set-up.

The 28-year-old has 15 goals in 33 matches for the club so far this season, while also providing 11 assists, but has only just returned to full fitness after an illness-enforced spell on the sidelines.

"I really missed playing and coming back to feel with a bit of strength: lately I didn't have much," he added. "We have to remain available and give everything when playing because we are all counted."

Arsenal will be aiming to build on their thrilling victory over Leicester City when they travel to Burnley for Saturday's Premier League showdown

Arteta addresses Lacazette future amid summer transfer talk for Arsenal striker

The French forward has been linked with leaving Emirates Stadium at the end of the season but the Gunners manager is happy with his performances

Mikel Arteta insists contract talks with Alexandre Lacazette will start soon with the Arsenal forward being linked with a summer move away from Emirates Stadium.

Lacazette has less than 18 months remaining on his current contract and has been consistently linked with a transfer, with Monaco this week becoming the latest side touted as a possible destination.

However, Arteta says there is no rush to tie Lacazette down to renewed terms, and that he is happy with the forward's performances at present.

What did Arteta say?

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Arsenal's weekend trip to Burnley, Arteta said of Lacazette: "He's got a contract with us. He played really well the other week. It's exactly what we demand him to do. I'm really happy with him and the discussions about his contract will happen soon and we will see what happens."

Arteta was in a similar situation last summer with his other big-name striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, before he signed his new deal. The manager said that he is hopeful Lacazette will agree to new terms just as his fellow forward did.

He said: "Well, I'm hoping that a player under contract will continue with us. Every case is different and we're going to assess that and we'll make a decision in relation to that."

How has Lacazette played this season?

The forward has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, including nine in 22 Premier League matches for Arsenal.

Lacazette, who moved to Arsenal from Lyon for £47 million ($66m) in July 2017, has been in and out of the starting XI for Arteta this campaign, but did score in their most recent Premier League match, a 3-1 victory at Leicester where he was given the captaincy.

'Messi never practises free kicks!' - Semedo speaks out on Barcelona superstar's 'natural' ability

The Blaugrana defender, who is currently on loan at Wolves, claims the Argentine doesn't need to work on his dead-ball shooting in training

Nelson Semedo has spoken out on Lionel Messi's 'natural' ability from set-pieces, insisting the Barcelona superstar never practises free kicks.

Messi's pinpoint accuracy from deal-ball situations over the course of his 16-year career at Camp Nou has helped him become the highest-scoring player in Barca's history.

Many of the best free-kick takers in the game work on their technique religiously in training, but Semedo claims the Argentine has always been "perfect" when it comes to picking out the corner of the net from long range.

What has been said?

Asked what it's like to train with Messi on a daily basis, the full-back, who is currently taking in a season-long loan spell at Wolves, told The Telegraph : “Wow. I really don’t have many words that can describe how good he is.

“You know what makes him even more amazing? I never once saw him take a free kick in training, in all of the time I was there. I swear he never did!

“We always used to practise shooting from distance but Messi never took a free kick. For him, it was just natural.

“They say practice makes perfect – with him it was no practice and it was still perfect!”

Messi's free-kick record

Messi has scored 658 goals in 763 games for Barca to date, including 49 from direct free kicks.

The 33-year-old has also found the net from a set-piece six times for Argentina, but is currently 11th in the list of all-time dead-ball greats.

Former Lyon midfielder Juninho holds the record with 77, while Brazil legend Pele managed 70 and David Beckham scored 66 over the course of his career.

Messi is ahead of his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, though, with the Juventus striker having scored 47 free kicks for club and country to date.

What's next for Messi?

Messi will be back in action with Barca when they play host to Sevilla in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie on Wednesday.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner will also have the chance to add to his goal tally at the weekend, with a La Liga clash against Osasuna on the cards.

Caf Champions League: Onyango, Miquissone in as Simba SC name squad for Al-Merrikh showdown

The duo produced a good performance against Al Ahly and are expected to be on top again when Wekundu wa Msimbazi take on the Sudanese club

Simba SC head coach has named a 25-man squad to face Al-Merrikh in the Caf Champions League on Saturday in Omdurman.

The Msimbazi giants, who reclaimed top spot in Group A after beating Al Ahly of Egypt 1-0 in Dar es Salaam, will be out for what is their second away game at this stage.

Luis Miquissone, who was named the Caf player of the week after an impressive performance against the Red Devils and scored the only goal for the game, has kept his place.

Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango, who equally had a good day against Al Ahly is in the squad and is likely to partner Pascal Wawa at the heart of the defence. Coach Didier Da Rosa has not made a lot of changes and is also expected to maintain the line up that started against the Egyptian Red Devils on Saturday.

Aishi Manula is expected to start in goal with Shomari Kapombe and Mohamed Hussein filling the full-back positions. Taddeo Lwanga and Mzamir Yassin could be drafted in midfield once more as Clatous Chama, Meedie Kagere and of course, Miquissone are set to spearhead the attack.

Wekundu wa Msimbazi have been promised Tsh200 million should they go on and record a third straight Group A win against Sudan's giants.

Al-Merrikh, second to Al-Hilal in their domestic league, are at the bottom of Group A after a 3-0 away loss to Al Ahly before a 4-1 defeat at home to AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, Simba coach Da Rosa warned that they should not be underrated at all.

“They have already lost twice and the last time was at home but I know these players and the team very well, they are very dangerous at home and they have a squad of proud players who cannot allow losing three matches in a row in the competition,” Da Rosa said.

“Al Merrikh are one of the biggest clubs in Africa and so we must be very serious, ready, and convinced that we have the quality, the ability, and the discipline to get a very good result there.

“But to be honest, it will be a very big fight because like I said Al Merrikh cannot accept to lose three times consecutively so we must be ready but you know what we have already done against Al Ahly and if we are able to play like we did [against Al Ahly] in Sudan, we have clear hopes to win.”

Simba SC squad:

Aishi Manula, Beno Kakolanya, Ally Juma, Shomari Kapombe, Joash Onyango, Pascal Wawa, Erasto Nyoni, Gadiel Michael, Mohammed Hussein, Jonas Mkude, Larry Bwalya, Mzamir Yassin, Luis Miquissone, Hassan Dilunga, Ibrahim Ajibu, Clatous Chaam, Francis Kahata, and Meddie Kagere.

John Bocco, Miraji Athumani, Chris Mugalu, Peter Muduhwa, Taddeo Lwanga, Kennedy Juma, and David Kameta.

Arteta 'happy and privileged' at Arsenal amid Barcelona links

Reports have linked the Gunners manager with the top job at the Camp Nou, should Joan Laporta win the upcoming presidential elections

Mikel Arteta has played down reports linking him with Barcelona - saying he is "privileged and happy" at Arsenal.

The Gunners boss has been linked with a possible move to the Camp Nou this week, with Joan Laporta said to be eying Arteta as a possible replacement for Ronald Koeman, should he be voted into power during the upcoming Barcelona presidential elections.

But the Spaniard has played down the suggestions, insisting his only focus now is on continuing the work he is doing in north London.

What's been said?

When asked about his name being linked with the Barcelona job, Arteta said: “There is always going to be speculation when there are elections in Barcelona, it’s a huge team.

“Obviously I was raised there as a player and there is always going to be links. But I am fully focused on the job that I have to do here, which we have a lot to do, and I am really enjoying it.

“Today and tomorrow I am the manager of Arsenal football club and I am really enjoying it. And I want to do much better than what we have done so far.

“What I can tell you is I feel privileged to manage this football club and that I’m extremely happy.”

Where did the reports come from?

It was reported by RAC1 that Arteta was one of the options being considered by Joan Laporta as a possible replacement for Ronald Koeman.

Laporta is one of three candidates who are in the running to become Barcelona’s next president.

Goal has since learned, however, that the Gunners head coach has not been contacted by anyone associated with Barca over the role and he is not under consideration to succeed Koeman in the dugout.

When will Barca's presidential election take place?

Barca were due to appoint their next president in January, but it was ultimately pushed back to March 8 after a series of delays.

Laporta is running for the post alongside Victor Font and Toni Freixa, and all three men took part in the first electoral debate on Sunday before next week's vote.

What's Arteta's contract situation at Arsenal?

The Spaniard has two years left on the deal he signed when he arrived in December 2019 to replace Unai Emery.

His job title changed from head coach to manager in the summer following Arsenal’s FA Cup win, but the promotion did not come with a new deal.

Arteta says he has yet to start discussions over a possible extension and that his focus now is purely on finishing the season as strongly as possible.

He said: “We are in the middle of the season, we have a lot to play for and at the moment it’s not a priority.

“I think that it’s OK. I still have a contract here, I am happy here and I don’t think it’s something urgent.”

Caf Confederation Cup: Safa explains why Orlando Pirates will face ES Setif in Ghana

The Group A encounter was initially scheduled to be played at Stade du 8 Mai 1945 in Algeria

South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed and also explained why Orlando Pirates will face Entente Sportive (ES) Setif at a neutral venue on March 10.

The two teams will start their Caf Confederation Cup group stage campaign at Ghana’s Accra Sports Stadium with Setif being the home team.

Safa's head of communications, Dominic Chimhavi indicated that the Setif are unable to host Pirates in their home country, Algeria, due to an issue of a long process to get visas.

“It’s not an issue of being denied entry. It’s an issue of a long process to get visas, but I can confirm Pirates will play the Algerian club [Setif] in Ghana," Chimhavi told Sowetan

The official also explained that it was premature to conclude all Pirates’ away games would be played on neutral venues with the Soweto giants also scheduled to face Libyan side Al Ahly Benghazi and Nigerian giants Enyimba.

"We will be looking at this issue on a country to country basis. The other two fixtures [against Benghazi and Enyimba] we will look at it when the time comes," he continued.

“It’s not a blanket approach. We are going to approach this case by case. You might find out that certain SA people are flying to these countries.

"So it’s the issue of the long visa process, not that they are denying SA entry."

Pirates' PSL rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have also encountered the same challenge as the Buccaneers this season.

Algerian club CR Belouizdad played host to Sundowns in Tanzania in the Caf Champions League Group B clash on Sunday with Masandawana claiming an emphatic 5-1 victory at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

This was after Sundowns' trip to Algeria was cancelled due to travel restrictions and Belouizdad had to find a venue for their encounter with Masandawana.

While Chiefs played their Champions League Group C game against Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in Burkina Faso on Sunday.

The Glamour Boys had been denied visas to travel to Morocco and they were thumped 4-0 by a ruthless Wydad side at Stade du 4 Aout in Ouagadougou.

Manchester City star Ruben Dias reveals watching Ferdinand and Vidic was his 'dream weekend'

The Portuguese defender has expressed his admiration for the legendary former Manchester United duo

Manchester City star Ruben Dias has revealed that he used to watch Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as part of his "dream weekend".

Dias has established himself as one of the top defenders in European football since joining City from Benfica last summer.

The Portuguese, who is helping Pep Guardiola's side fight for an unprecedented quadruple, says his immediate adjustment to Premier League football was helped by his experiences of following the legendary former Manchester United duo before he turned professional himself.

What's been said?

Dias also cited ex-City captain Vincent Kompany and Chelsea great John Terry as positive influences on his career during an interview with Ferdinand for BT Sport.

"When I was a kid watching the Premier League was my dream weekend, I've watched many games with you, Vidic, Kompany, John Terry, an infinite list," the 23-year-old said before City's 4-1 win against Wolves on Tuesday night.

"From there you start learning and I learned a lot from what I hear and what I see and just by watching I started to understand the league and the way you play.

"The thing that makes the big difference is how competitive it is. Here you get the challenge every game and I think that's what makes the league different and if you're successful it's because you can solve it many times."

Dias' record at Man City

City paid £62 million ($87m) to bring Dias to Etihad Stadium last September, a fee which has ultimately proven to be a bargain as Guardiola's side have stormed 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The ex-Benfica centre-back has racked up 43 appearances across all competitions for City already, scoring four goals including a header in the 2-0 win against West Ham last weekend.

Dias has successfully filled the void left by Kompany following his departure in 2019, but claims to have never been worried about emulating the Belgian's exploits in Manchester.

"I felt zero pressure – no one could put more pressure apart from the pressure I put on myself," he said

"People are comparing me to Vincent and I understand why people do it but honestly for me you cannot replace Kompany because of all that he's done. I have a lot ambition, I want to win."

What's next?

Dias will likely retain his place in Guardiola's starting XI when City play host to arch-rivals United on Sunday afternoon. The Premier League leaders can move 18 points ahead of the Red Devils if they pick up a 22nd successive victory, before their focus shifts to another home fixture against Southampton on March 10.

'We assume he will stay' - Dortmund planning future with Haaland, insists Kehl

The forward is wanted by clubs all over Europe but his current employers feel he could remain in the Bundesliga for the 2021-22 season

Borussia Dortmund "assume" that Erling Haaland will still be their player next season and are including him in their plans for the future, insists the club's head of first-team football Sebastian Kehl.

Haaland is one of the most in-demand players in world football, with a bidding war set to intensify for the striker's signature amid Dortmund's struggles to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Kehl, however, says that there has been no firm deal put in place, and therefore Dortmund are working on the assumption that they will be able to call on Haaland's goals in the 2021-22 campaign.

What has been said?

Kehl told SportBild of Haaland: "We assume that he will stay beyond the summer and become an even better player with us."

Where does Haaland's future lie?

The Norwegian has been linked with almost every major European club, including Barcelona, Real Madrid and both Manchester clubs.

He has established himself as one of the world's best centre-forwards before the age of 21, this season scoring 33 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

He joined Dortmund in January 2020 from Red Bull Salzburg, and has torn up the Bundesliga with his scoring ability; however, his club have failed to match his prowess.

Dortmund are currently fifth in the table, 13 points off leaders Bayern Munich and struggling to qualify for next season's Champions League.

If they fail to reach the top level of club competition next season, the pressure will increase further on Dortmund to cash in on one of world football's most valuable assets.
