Mane: Liverpool must play every game like vs RB Leipzig

The Reds ended a diappointing run of three consecutive defeats in the Premier League with a vital away win in Tuesday's Champions League clash

Liverpool star Sadio Mane has charged his teammates to replicate their performance in the 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig in their subsequent games.

Jurgen Klopp’s men put in a spirited display at the Puskas Arena on Tuesday night to see off their German hosts after a goalless first-half.

Mohamed Salah fired the Reds ahead in the 53rd minute before Mane sealed the victory, five minutes later.

The result ended Liverpool’s run of three straight defeats in the Premier League - Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City, Leicester City - and Mane has disclosed how they can build on the win after a ‘tough game’ against the club second on the Bundesliga table behind Bayern Munich.

“I think it wasn’t an easy game. We have had a really tough time but we never doubted [ourselves],” Mane told the club website.

“We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game from the beginning and it’s not a surprise for us, so we are doing our best, we keep fighting like we can and tonight we showed our character. We played good football, even though it wasn’t our best, but at least tonight I think we deserved to win.

“For us it’s extra motivation [the recent tough spell]. Like I said, it’s not easy for us but it doesn’t make us bad and for sure this is sometimes normal.

“We know what to do now and I think we have to play every single game [with] this kind of performance, otherwise it won’t be easy for us. Let’s do our best and try every game to be like our best.”

Next up for Liverpool is the Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield on Saturday, and Mane and his teammates will be aiming for their first league win since their 3-1 victory over West Ham United on January 31.

Premier League wants changes to UEFA's Champions League 'Swiss Model' reforms

The plans would see clubs qualify for Europe based on previous performances in the competition rather than their position in the table

Premier League clubs have voted against many of UEFA's plans to revamp the Champions League after 2024, including the awarding of places based on historical performance.

The English top-flight had a video conference call with members from each club to discuss proposals by UEFA that also would see more fixtures for clubs in Europe.

It is feared that the new plans, if left unchecked, would diminish the interest in domestic leagues.

The changes were focused on three main points: access to the competitions, impact on the football calender and changes to the volume of matches.

Those possible changes in 2024 could also leave clubs with European commitments unable to compete in the EFL Cup, which is currently branded as the Carabao Cup.

What are UEFA's plans?

The group stage would be replaced by a 36-team league which would see 10 fixtures played per team to determine the standings.

It would open four extra spots for the competition and what has been described as the 'Swiss Model' is essentially a massive league in which teams would not have to play against every other side.

There would be five home and five away matches against 10 different teams for the clubs that qualified. The top eight teams would be eligible for the last-16, while ninth to 24th would go into a play-off round for the eight remaining spots.

Alongside that, European coefficients rather than domestic league standings would be used to decide who qualifies for the Champions League and Europa League. This would make it harder for clubs outside the established elite to get into the top competitions and earn the revenues that come with it.

If there are more matches, the Premier League asks that all group stage games are completed by December.

Why is this being discussed now?

The threat of a breakaway Super League has led to pressure being put on UEFA for reforms that would benefit many of Europe's super clubs.

If a Super League is formed, UEFA, FIFA and the Premier League would be left out of revenues involving the game's biggest clubs.

Ahead of the latest TV rights deal ending in 2024, a new system is allowed to be put in place that could appease those threatening to start a Super League.

Who would benefit from the changes?

It would benefit England's top six clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. It would also help Europe's elite clubs like Juventus, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich stay at the top of the sport.

However, the Premier League, which consists of 20 clubs, are broadly against the proposals. Indeed, so are many other bodies across Europe.

Speaking at the Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit, Bundesliga CEO Christian Seifert said: "The brutal truth is that a few of those so-called super clubs are in fact poorly managed cash-burning machines.

“They will burn this money like they burned it the last 10 years. If I was an investor, I would really question if they were the right partner.”

The European League, which represents domestic football across the continent, released a statement last week to make their concerns public.

“The European Leagues have raised strong concerns about more matchdays in such a flexible system in an already very congested calendar,” the organisation wrote.

“They also questioned the possible impact of access as well as commercial components on the sporting and financial balance of domestic leagues. Finally, they discussed several options regarding financial redistribution.”

However, they went onto say: “The European leagues welcome the consultation process led by UEFA and consider that the vision based on the so-called 'Swiss Model' is an improvement compared to the more radical proposals that emerged in 2019."

Cameroon 1-0 Uganda: Jang strike hands Cranes defeat in second Afcon U20 game

The East Africans could not find a way past their preliminary rivals who have now moved an inch closer to the knockout phase

Cameroon condemned Uganda to a 1-0 loss in the second game of their African Cup of Nations U20 Group A encounter on Wednesday in Nouadhibou, Mauritania.

A first-half strike by Junior Jang Sunday is what separated the Central Africans from the East Africans as the former has set one foot into the quarter-finals

After holding the Central Africans at bay for a quarter of an hour, the Hippos went behind in the 32nd minute when Cameroon's Jang fired past Jack Komakech with a diving header.

The Cameroonians held onto the slim lead into the half-time break before Morley Byekwaso - who retained his starting XI that featured in the opener -  made a double change in the 55th minute. Steven Sserwada and Ivan Asaba came on for Najib Yiga and Ivan Bogere, respectively.

Uganda, who were dominant in the opening game against Mozambique, failed to assert themselves on the Cameroonian side.

Isma Mugulusi, who was named player of the match against the Southern Africans on Monday and a forward line consisting of Derrick Kakooza, Bogere, Richard Basangwa and later Asaba, failed to trouble the rivals as they did against Mozambique when they ended up coming on top with a 2-0 margin.

Cameroon - appearing for the 10th time in the competition - also opened the tournament with a win as they defeated Mauritania 1-0 and the victory against the Hippos - who are making their debut at the Afcon junior tournament - has taken them close to the quarter-final mark.

Mauritania and Mozambique will clash in the other group match later on as the competition start to gather speed.

Cameroon XI: Junior Hecube, Blondon Meyapya, Saidou Ibrahim, Fidel Ambina, Saidou Alioum, Stephen Ikpeme, Bemol Apam, Young Nchidno, Junior Jang Sunday, Bryan Ndjile, Goni Ali.

Subs: Wilfried Bedfian, Samuel Kotto, Atangana Mvondo, Keko Felix, Tenkou Yougou, Milla Kevin Prince, Eto'o Etienne, Daouda Amadou, Yahya Abdoulaye.

Uganda XI: Jack Komakech, Garvin Kizito Mugweri, Aziz Kayondo, Musa Ramathan, Kenneth Ssemakula, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Isma Mugulusi, Najib Yiga, Derrick Kakooza, Ivan Bogere, Richard Basangwa.

Subs: Denis Ssenyondwa Kaala, Delton Oyo, Joseph Kafumbe, James Penz Begisa, Simon Baligeya, Ivan Eyamu, Andrew Kawooya, Ivan Asaba, Steven Sserwadda, Davis Ssekajja, Faisal Wabyoona, Joseph Kizza Bukenya, Alpha Thierry Ssali, Samuel Ssenyonjo.

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Mngqithi: There were some scary moments

After a tough home encounter against their opponents from Limpopo, the Brazilians coach acknowledged had to work for the three points

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has admitted that his side did not have things all their own way against Baroka FC at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Limpopo team created the better chances in the opening half and could have been in front if they had been more clinical.

It took two goals in five minutes midway through the second half, by Gaston Sirino and Peter Shalulile, to earn the 2-0 win. Even after that, Baroka had some good chances and it was to Sundowns' credit that they ground out victory against a team which played well on the day.

"Our boys tried to adapt to the challenges they were facing," Mngqithi stated in his post-match interview with SuperSport TV.

"There were some scary moments in the first half where we did not break the press, [Thamsanqa] Masiya found the space behind the [Sundowns] defence and we could see that the ball was not covered on their right centre-back, [Bonginkosi] Makume (who provided a flick on), and unfortunately [Masiya] missed (with a lobbed effort).

"But it was a very good chance from a situation - from some of the technical aspects we had put in place where we say we must be aware of these moments, they can always punish us with a second ball," said Mngqithi, in reference to the route-one approach which Bakgaga took at times.

"They can always punish us with wingers who are playing out of the wing and looking to take the space between the full-back and the centre-back," Mngqithi added.

"But overall I think the boys worked really hard. We wanted this result, we wanted to start the second half of the season on a high note."

Kermit Erasmus had proved to be the game-changer for Masandawana - after replacing Mothobi Mvala early in the second half, he had a hand in both of Sundowns' goals.

"One must commend the substitutes we brought in," Mngqithi elaborated. "I think Kermit influenced the game. We knew what we wanted, we wanted somebody who would give us a point of reference.

"Somebody who gives us depth to be able to establish play, and that is why we managed to create the chances that we created. Kermit gave a very good account of himself and I was happy for Peter to be able to score again.

"He's working very hard for us, at times the goals can just allude him, but today he gave a very good account of himself. I'm also happy that we kept a clean sheet and the two goals, it could have been better, but it's still work in progress."

Yanga SC 3-3 Kagera Sugar: Mwananchi survive scare to stretch unbeaten run

The Jangwani giants came from behind thrice to claim another draw in a thrilling contest at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium

Yanga SC survived another scare to snatch a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kagera Sugar in a Mainland Premier League match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday.

The Jangwani giants have now registered a third straight draw since the second round of the league resumed but the reason they will gladly take the result against Kagera is the fact they managed to stretch their unbeaten to 20 matches this campaign.

Yanga went into the match after celebrating 86 years of existence and were keen to bounce back to winning ways, having drawn their previous two matches – 1-1 against Tanzania Prisons and 1-1 against Mbeya City.

However, it was Kagera, who are coached by Mecky Maxime, who took a shock lead in the 11th minute after Peter Mwaiyanzi scored from close range, but, Yanga responded in the 14th minute when Tuisila Kisinda levelled matters.

Kagera then scored their second goal courtesy of Hassan Mwaterema in the 25th minute but four minutes later, Yanga were on level terms yet again when Deus Kaseke powered home with a well-curled effort to the bottom right corner.

With the game heading to half-time tied at 2-2, Kagera had other ideas as lethal striker Yusuf Mhilu scored the third to send them to the break with a 3-2 lead against the table-toppers.

On resumption, Yanga threw everything at Kagera with Kaseke and Kisinda coming close but they had to wait until the 61st minute when Mukoko Tonombe scored their third goal, which helped them to snatch a vital point and keep their unbeaten run.

Ahead of the fixture, Yanga coach Cedric Kaze had called on his team to end the run of two straight draws by winning the fixture but it seems the Kagera-based Sugar Millers had other plans as they started the game on a high note.

It was not a surprise when Mwaiyanzi raced onto a through ball from Mhilu to round goalkeeper Metacha Mnata and plant the ball to an empty net. The goal somehow woke up Yanga, who responded immediately as Kisinda put them level after meeting a cross from Kaseke.

The goal did not affect the spirit of Kagera strikers as Mwaterema put them 2-1 up after he fastened onto another pass from Mhilu, to leave Yanga defenders for dead before placing the ball past Mnata.

Yanga once again sensed danger and piled pressure on the Kagera goalmouth and they were rewarded with a goal as Kaseke put them 2-2 up with a well-curled ball, but before they could finish celebrating, Kagera added the third through the hard-working Mhilu, who beat his marker to sneak the ball into the net.

However, a spirited second half saw Yanga salvage a draw and also keep their unbeaten run going as Tonombe headed in a cross from Kaseke for the 3-3 draw.

Carlo Ancelotti's curious mismanagement of Alex Iwobi

The 24-year-old could be so much more than a utility player if the Toffees boss would only give him a fair chance

Fourteen months into his management of Everton, it remains unclear what exactly Carlo Ancelotti thinks of Alex Iwobi.

The Nigeria international's unique misfortune in being injured when the two-time Champions League winner was appointed meant he struggled to register in any meaningful way during the first half-season of Ancelotti's reign. Since then, things have improved appearance-wise; however, the sense lingers still that Iwobi is no nearer to winning his manager's trust entirely.

The 24-year-old is only six appearances shy of his total Premier League tally for last season, and is already two assists better off. That paints a picture, but not the bigger one. He is more involved, yes, but curiously his role within the team has varied wildly.

For the most part, his playing time has been divvied up between the right wing (predominantly), left wing, right wing-back and right-back. The results have been mixed-to-positive, with Iwobi's intelligence in possession and ability to carry the ball into the final third particular highlights.

That said, all of that shunting around has done little for his stock as a player.

Utility players inhabit an odd paradox: being tasked with playing specific tactical roles and filling in all over the place suggests a certain degree of trust from the manager, but it is a trust that is very narrowly-defined.

It does not extend, for instance, to affording them the freedom to play their natural games, even when the opportunity arises.

That is the limbo in which Iwobi now finds himself. When injuries and suspensions have depleted Everton's resources, he has been used as polyfilla: see his superb performance as ersatz right-back when Seamus Coleman was unavailable for the trip to Fulham, or his goalscoring turn against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the absence of talisman James Rodriguez.

Beyond this stop-gap modality, however, Ancelotti appears reluctant to fully commit.

As a result, Iwobi has struggled for proper continuity in the Everton side, often having a good outing one week, only to be relegated to the bench the next. After scoring against Wolves, he was left out of the starting lineup for the visit of Leicester, then handed consecutive starts before being dropped again after impressing against Leeds on February 3.

Sometimes, Ancelotti's odd management of Iwobi rears its head within a single game. It can come across as though Iwobi gets hooked during matches for no actual reason, and that's buttressed by the fact the team gets worse afterward, as well as by the realization that poorer performances are tolerated.

A case in point: during Everton's 2-0 home loss to Newcastle on January 30, the Toffees struggled to come to grips with their visitors' diamond midfield.

In a bid to compete, Ancelotti elected to introduce another midfielder, but in doing so sacrificed Iwobi and, with him, the team's attacking width. With no threat from out wide to worry about, Newcastle duly went on to dominate even more and score twice.

Away at Southampton earlier in the seasons, despite Gylfi Sigurdsson's lack of defensive awareness exposing the team, it was Iwobi who was substituted at half-time with the Saints ahead.

It is these incidents that make it difficult to get a read on the Ancelotti-Iwobi dynamic. The attacking midfielder is much too conscientious to kick up a fuss (perhaps that's an impediment, in fact), and will gladly play anywhere, but it appears one rule applies to him, while another applies to everyone else at Goodison Park.

In the weekend defeat to Fulham, Iwobi found himself on the bench even as Everton struggled for fluency or inspiration. Considering striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was unavailable, surely it would have been beneficial to name another attacker in the lineup. Instead, Ancelotti handed Sigurdsson a start and selected Abdoulaye Doucoure in a right-sided role that did little to stem the bleeding as Ademola Lookman and Ola Aina tore the Toffees to shreds on that flank.

For a manager whose very way of working has revolved around his unique management of players, how can one parse his approach to Iwobi? This is, after all, a player who has a very rounded game, and who thrives on confidence. Reducing him to an impact player, or merely to plug gaps, is hardly the best use, and will almost certainly ensure Everton don't get the full bang for the considerable buck they shelled out for him two summers ago.

Rashford championed by F1 star Hamilton as Man Utd striker named in Time's Next 100

The 23-year-old was named in Time magazine's Next 100 and earned glowing praise from the race car driver

Formula One star Lewis Hamilton has praised Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford as a "galvanising force" and says his efforts to fight child hunger in the United Kingdom have been "truly inspiring".

The 23-year-old was appointed MBE last year in recognition of his charity work to deliver food to children in Manchester who missed out on free school meals because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also wrote an open letter to the British government calling for more to be done to eradicate child poverty, which helped convince the government to continue providing free meals through the summer holidays.

Rashford has been named in Time magazine's Next 100 list as a result of his activism and race car driver Hamilton has hailed the England international's "resilience and persistence".

What has been said?

Hamilton wrote in Time: "In 2020, Marcus Rashford took his many talents beyond the football field - where he is a star player for Manchester United and England’s national team - to respond to a national crisis: child hunger. 'I know what it feels like to be hungry,' he wrote last June as part of a campaign that succeeded in pushing the government to provide meals for students in need during summer vacation.

"By standing up for the most vulnerable in our society, and using his platform and influence to create positive change, Marcus inspired countless others to join him on this mission and cemented his status as a role model.

"In a year that showed us the power of working together toward a common goal, he was a galvanising force behind uniting people across the U.K. in the effort to ensure that no child goes hungry. His determination, resilience and persistence have been truly inspiring. I cannot wait to see how he continues this important work."

Rashford's impact this season

Rashford has been one of United's most productive players this season.

The forward has scored eight goals and registered six assists in 24 Premier League matches this season, netting a further six times in as many appearances in the Champions League. Only Bruno Fernandes has had a hand in more goals for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this term.

United are currently second in the English top-flight and trail leaders Manchester City by seven points, though Pep Guardiola's team have a game in hand.

The Red Devils turn their attention to Europa League duty this week as they take on Real Sociedad in the first leg of their last-32 tie on Thursday.  A Premier League match at home to Newcastle follows three days later.

Nigeria’s Shoretire and Ivory Coast’s Diallo in Manchester United squad for Real Sociedad trip

The African duo are in contention to make their debut for the Red Devils in Thursday's Europa League game in Turin

Nigeria teenage sensation Shola Shoretire and Ivory Coast youngster Amad Diallo have been included in the Manchester United 22-man squad for their Uefa Europa League away game against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

Shoretire, who turned 17 years of age earlier this month, was handed his first professional contract last Monday after his impressive performances with the U23s.

He joins new signing Diallo, who completed a permanent move from Serie A club Atalanta in January, in aiming for their maiden appearances in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side at the Allianz Stadium.

When quizzed about the inclusion of the young players, Solskjaer disclosed that Shoretire and Diallo have earned their spots after training with the first-team and they might even be needed to help the team against Real Sociedad.

“Yeah, they’re in the travelling squad. Not just for the experience, they’re there to make an impact if they have to,” Solskjaer told the club website.

“The two boys have done well in training and they are talents that we want to give experience to. First of all, they’re travelling and then let’s see if they come on the pitch.

“It’s one of the things we do with our youngsters. They come in and they travel, step-by-step, layer-by-layer and suddenly they’re on the pitch. That’s the thing – we do have a plan and a programme in place that we try to stick to.

“Obviously when there are injuries or absentees or illness then maybe they’ll get the chance before we expected, but the two of them have done well.”

Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani have been ruled out of the encounter due to injuries, however, Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly could be thrown into the fray for his first outing since Manchester United defeated Fulham 2-1 on January 20.

Ndidi is irreplaceable at Leicester City - Rodgers

The Northern Irish tactician is looking forward to keeping the Nigeria international for a long time at the King Power Stadium

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has described Wilfred Ndidi as an irreplaceable part of his team and hopes the midfielder will continue his stay with his side for a couple more years.

The 24-year-old has been consistent for the King Power Stadium outfit since teaming up with the side from Belgian club Genk in 2017.

The Nigeria international has featured in more than 150 games across all competitions, delivering solid defensive performances.

In the current campaign, the midfielder has made a key impact in Leicester's push for Premier League title, having made 12 league appearances, scoring one goal and providing an assist.

Ndidi was a cynosure of all eyes in his side’s stunning victory over Liverpool on Saturday and has earned a rave review for his commanding display in the encounter.

Rodgers is hoping the Super Eagles star will continue with his side for a long time, although he is aware there could be bigger clubs jostling for his signature in the summer.

"He's one of the top players in world football. His quality in his football is improving all the time. He is irreplaceable for us. He's fantastic for a young player,” Rodgers said in a press conference.

"What is pleasing as a coach, is that he wants to learn. He will improve and get better. I'm so happy he plays in my team."

Ndidi was part of the Leicester City squad that travelled to the Czech Republic for their Europa League game against Slavia Prague on Thursday.

The midfielder will be expected to feature prominently for the King Power Stadium outfit in the encounter.

Ndidi has struggled with injury challenges this season and only recently returned from thigh muscle strain problems.

The various injury problems have limited the midfielder’s playing time to 17 appearances across all competitions and he will hope to sustain his fitness in order to continue to play a significant role for the Foxes.

The 24-year-old is also a key member of the Super Eagles squad and has made 36 appearances for the West African country.

Ndidi will be expected to replicate his impressive club performances for Gernot Rohr’s men in their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March.

Solskjaer confirms Man Utd wonderkids Diallo & Shoretire could debut vs Real Sociedad

The Red Devils coach hopes to see the pair make an impact if they are called on to play in the Europa League match

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given Amad Diallo and Shola Shoretire hope of making their senior debuts in the Europa League clash against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The pair have been included in the squad that will travel to Turin to take on the Spanish side in the first leg of the last-32 tie.

Diallo joined from Atalanta in January and is yet to be part of a matchday squad for the Red Devils, while 17-year-old Shoretire is awaiting his maiden first-team appearance having progressed through the youth system and signing his first professional contract last month.

What has been said?

Solskjaer says the pair have not been named in the squad just to make up the numbers and instead hopes they can make an impact against Sociedad.

"Yeah, they’re in the travelling squad. Not just for experience, they’re there to make an impact if they have to," he told the club's website.

"The two boys have done well in training and they are talents that we want to give experience to. First of all they’re travelling and then let’s see if they come on the pitch.

"It’s one of the things we do with our youngsters. They come in and they travel, step-by-step, layer-by-layer and suddenly they’re on the pitch. That’s the thing – we do have a plan and a programme in place that we try to stick to.

"Obviously when there are injuries or absentees or illness then maybe they’ll get the chance before we expected, but the two of them have done well."

Man Utd's focus on youth

The Norwegian coach says the Red Devils want to give promising young players a chance to shine in the first-team and believes he can help improve them.

"We give them the chance to come to Man Utd and have a successful career. As a club, we've proven over the years that's something we take seriously and it's something we are good at. We are a club that like to give chances to young players and develop and find a talent," he told reporters.

"Our history has always been about attacking players, skilful players that you play with no fear. These are players that we have identified to carry that tradition. My role is to speak and put a clear pathway for them to say this is what we did.

"We've shown over the years with the previous managers - Sir Alex was the best with producing the best players in the world, bringing them. Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were young. Of course we developed [Ryan] Giggs, [David] Beckham, [Gary] Neville and that group ourselves. We have still got Marcus Rashford, we have Mason [Greenwood] coming through.

"All these experiences help me as a manager when I want to and convince players that here is the future for you. I like to give them a chance. When you follow my career as a coach, that is one of the biggest enjoyments, seeing a player as a young man and then seeing him successful at the highest level."

Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Baroka FC: Downs shake off Bakgaga challenge to claim comfortable win

Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 Baroka FC: Downs shake off Bakgaga challenge to claim comfortable win

Kermit Erasmus made a notable impact off the bench as he provided assists for both goals as the Brazilians stretched their lead at the top

Two goals inside five second-half minutes from Gaston Sirino and Peter Shalulile steered Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-0 win over Baroka FC in a lively league encounter at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Baroka had not come into the match in good form, having gone four matches without a win. However, in an open and action-packed first half, it was the Limpopo side who had the better of the chances and they looked particularly dangerous on the counter.

It was Sundowns though who had the first openings - after two minutes Mothobi Mvala had a shot blocked before Lyle Lakay followed up and fired just wide of the target.

At the other end, Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango comfortably saved Ananias Gebhardt’s eighth-minute header.

Onyango was again called into action in the 18th minute and had to react sharply to get down and stop Evidence Makgopa from turning in Thamsanqa Masiya's cross from just a few yards out.

Baroka continued to look dangerous and they should really have gone ahead in the 33rd minute when a routeone ball from goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze was flicked into the path of Masiya. With Onyango off his line, the goal was beckoning, but Masiya failed to capitalise as he lobbed the ball wide.

Bakgaga also had the final chance of the first half when right-back Mashweu Mphahlele went for goal from some distance out on the flank, nearly catching out Onyango, who ultimately did well to gather the ball.

While Masandawana started the second half with purpose, it was again the visiting team who looked more likely to score and they wasted another great chance when Manuel Kambala sent a volley off target with the goal at his mercy in the 57th minute before Joslin Kamatuka scuffed an effort wide moments later.

However, having failed to take their chances, Baroka were punished by the Brazilians in the 63rd minute when substitute Kermit Erasmus turned neatly before threading in a superb ball for Sirino, who ran through on goal unchallenged before placing a low curling shot into the bottom right corner.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Siphelele Mkhulise picked out Erasmus in the box, the striker taking a touch before firing goalwards, where Chipezeze could only palm the ball into the path of Shalulile, who tapped in with ease.

To their credit Baroka didn't throw in the towel and were close to levelling in the 78th minute when Onyango flapped at a corner but failed to get contact, allowing Phelelani Shozi to shoot at what appeared an empty net, before centre-back Ricardo Nascimento came to his keeper's aid by heading the ball off the line.

At the other end, Erasmus wasted a fantastic chance when he hit the post from close range following a pin-point cross from Lebohang Maboe.

Onyango, meanwhile, continued to work hard as he tipped a header from Kamatuka over the line before Tshediso Patjie also went close.

The Ugandan stopper was to make sure of the clean sheet with another fine save - denying Kgodiso Monama from point-blank range in the 93rd minute.

KCCA FC snatch late draw vs Express FC, SC Villa fight back to hold Wakiso Giants

The Kasasiro Boys were headed for what could have been a fourth straight loss but got a point thanks to a late goal

Kampala Capital City Authority FC fought back to snatch a point against Express FC following a 1-1 draw in a Ugandan Premier League game played on Wednesday at the Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Charles Lwanga scored late to ensure Kasasiro Boys went home with a point after going down in the first half to a goal scored by Erick Kambale.

The Red Eagles were left to rue the chances - across both halves - that went unconverted.

Godfrey Lwesibwa would have opened the score inside five minutes but he ended up heading Arthur Kiggundu's cross from a good position wide. Issa Lumu could not connect well with Lwesibwa's corner moments later as the hosts saw another chance go to waste.

George Ssenkaaba saw a number of his chances, including a bicycle kick, and a close-range shot, go out even though he had beaten Peter Magambo as he surged goalwards.

The rather wasteful home side, however, got an opener through Kambale in the first minute of added time before the teams went back for the half-time break.

Ssenkaba's replacement Frank Kalanda, who came on as the second half started, could not convert a number of chances that came his way. His combination with Kambale midway through the second half could have led to a second goal but Charles Lukwago in KCCA's goal was alert enough to deal with the danger.

As the Red Eagles were all destined for a win, a corner in the 88th minute by Hassan Musana altered everything as Lwanga headed home to ensure the tie ended in a draw.

Coach Wasswa Bbosa's side, however, will remain unbeaten in the season as the Kasasiro Boys picked up a point after losing the last three games.

In another match, Uganda Revenue Authority emerged 3-2 winners over Malaba Youth Sports Association.

Cromwell Rwothomio scored all the goals for the Tax Collectors to condemn the struggling debutants to yet another loss.

The forward scored his first in the 18th minute from a corner delivered by Shafiq Kagimu. He scored the second in the same fashion as the first goal as he headed in Kagimu's corner in the 21st minute.

Myda responded in the 70th minute when Norman Ogiki scored but Rwothomio stretched URA's lead 10 minutes later after he was put through on goal by Steven Mukwala.

The home side got the second goal from the penalty spot in the first minute of added time through Ibra Nsimbe.

Finally, at Kabaka Kyabaggu, Stadium Waksio Giants and SC Villa shared points from a 2-2 draw.

Real Madrid want Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres but face €65m price tag

Los Blancos are keeping the 24-year-old Spain international under close observation yet may not be willing to match a hefty asking price

Real Madrid are pondering a move for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, Goal can confirm, as speculation continues to mount that Sergio Ramos is set for an exit from Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos are keeping the 24-year-old Spain international under close observation, with Zinedine Zidane's side likely to be in the market for a central defender to bolster their options in La Liga.

However, Madrid could face a tussle over Villarreal's asking fee, with Unai Emery's side unlikely to want to let the cornerstone of their defence leave for anything under their valuation.

What's the deal?

Torres, a product of the Valencian outfit's youth system, was previously valued with a release clause of €50 million (£43.4m/$60.1m), but has now seen his stock rise to €65m (£57m/$78m) following his international debut.

Madrid are hopeful that a strong relationship between the two clubs may see them able to negotiate for a lower asking price, particularly in the current market, given that a transfer at the current asking price would break their record buy for a defender.

With a contract set through until 2024, however, Villarreal are less than keen on parting with Torres, who would be a key asset in any European campaign the club were to qualify for - though their Champions League aspirations appear to be fading following a barren run.

The bigger picture

The lengths to which Madrid may pursue Torres hinge heavily on whether Los Blancos can convince captain Ramos to sign an extension to keep him in the Spanish capital, a decision which looks increasingly unlikely as the campaign wears on.

The long-serving centre-half's current deal expires at the end of the current campaign, with various reports having linked him with a departure as he looks to continue his playing career at 34.

Torres is also far from the only defender mooted as an option for Madrid, with Braga's David Carmo and Sevilla's Jules Kounde also targets should Ramos bring a curtain down on his time at the club.

What about Alaba?

Madrid's pursuit of David Alaba is entirely separate from Torres. The Blancos are confident they can sign the Bayern Munich star - who is heading towards free agency - ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Should Ramos leave, however - or even Raphael Varane, whose own future is up in the air - Zidane's side will push forward in their pursuit of Torres.

'Keep calm and be positive' - FC Goa boss Juan Ferrando shifts focus to Bengaluru tie after morale-boosting win against Odisha

The FC Goa coach wants his players to control their emotions on the field at the end of the season...

FC Goa boss Juan Ferrando was relieved to finally register a victory after six consecutive draws in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL). The Gaurs defeated Odisha 3-1 on Wednesday and picked up three very important points in the top-four race.

The Spaniards in the team starred as Alberto Noguera, Jorge Ortiz and Ivan Gonzalez scored to render Diego Mauricio's strike ineffective.

After the game, Ferrando said, "I am satisfied because we got three points. It is good for the dressing room ambience after six draws.

"More or less, it is the end of the season. The emotion and stress are very difficult to control in the last few games. But to win today is good. It is difficult for all, it has been a hard season for all in these conditions.

"For me, the most important thing in the upcoming games is to control the emotions. It is very difficult and necessary to keep calm and be positive."

The Gaurs needed an injury-time equaliser from substitute Ishan Pandita to salvage a point against Chennaiyin in their last game but Ferrando feels delivered an improved display against bottom-placed Odisha.

"In this case, our set-pieces were better than the last game. Odisha's opportunities (happened) were because it was in transition. The team is working. I'm upset because we don't have a lot of time to work on training sessions"

Ferrando is pleased with the displays of defender Ivan Gonzalez who also got on the scoresheet in the game but claimed that the team will quickly turn their attention to the must-win game against Bengaluru on Sunday.

"I am very happy for Ivan. But for me, I never talk about individuals. Rest of the team was also perfect. (We will) go to the hotel, rest and then think about Bengaluru immediately. Important three points, it is necessary to focus on the next game."

Odisha boss Gerry Peyton admitted that Goa had too much quality on the ball and are a difficult side to beat.

"I am going to be very honest, they are a very very good side. Technically, they are one of the best in the ISL and that's why they are going for the title. Tactically, we matched them but technically, they were better than us and they took their goals well.

"It is very difficult to play against a technical team like Goa who keep the ball. It is waiting and making sure they don't play through to you and try to stay in the game as long as possible until you earn the right to get on the ball and start hitting them on counter-attacks," he concluded.

David Simiyu: Mathare United confirm signing of ex-Sofapaka midfielder

The midfielder arrives on a free transfer having parted ways with the former league champions in January

Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Mathare United have confirmed the signing of David Simiyu.

The midfielder joins the Slum Boys on a free transfer since he left Sofapaka along with eight other players in late January.

Faina Jacobs, Bryson Juma, Collins Wakhungu, Isaiah Wakasala, Jedinak Nana, Promise Chinonso and Michael Karamor are the other players who were released by Batoto ba Mungu.

"David Simiyu has joined the club on a short term deal until the end of the current 2020/21 season. The midfielder commonly referred to as 'Balo' by his peers, joins us on a bossman," Mathare confirmed on Wednesday.

"Welcome so much to Mathare Davy."

The midfielder arrives at the Eastland club, who had started the season with much on and off pitch difficulties, but a recent 1-0 win over Nzoia Sugar looked to have satisfied head coach Salim Ali.

"I am satisfied with the fighting spirit and if I could, I would award every single one of them with the game’s [Most Valuable Player] award," Ali said in a previous interview.

"It has been a tough start. Everything that went on before the season started has impacted the team hugely. Trying to balance the team while playing competitively has been our undoing but I feel we are now slowly finding our footing.

"We will improve as long as the fighting spirit, as we saw against Nzoia, continues."

Mathare United, who were brought back to the FKF Premier League fold by a local tribunal, are in position 16 on the 18-team table with eight points from eight matches.

Next for them is a game against promoted side Bidco United on February 19.

Thereafter, they will play Wazito FC, Nairobi City Stars, Kakamega Homeboyz, Posta Rangers before taking on AFC Leopards.

Greenwood determined to rediscover best form after penning new Manchester United deal

The England international says he is "working hard" on the training ground to make a big impact for the Red Devils in the business end of the season

Mason Greenwood says he is determined to rediscover his best form after penning a new long-term deal at Manchester United.

Greenwood committed his future to United through to 2025 on Tuesday, with the option of an extra year included in the final agreement.

The 19-year-old hasn't been as prolific in 2020-21 as he was last season, but says he will do everything he can to reward the club's faith in him as the Red Devils seek to bring their four-year trophy drought to an end in May.

What was said?

Asked if he is feeling ready to make an impact in the business end of the season after overcoming a series of niggling fitness issues, Greenwood told a press conference: "Yeah 100%, I feel like I’m getting back up to where I was last season. I’ve been here since the age of seven and it’s the place I want to be.

"Hopefully I can get back up to the standards I was up to last season and I’m working hard with all the coaches so hopefully I’ll be back there soon."

Dealing with the spotlight

Greenwood has had to cope with the increased scrutiny that comes with being a major star at Old Trafford, having been earmarked as one of the brightest young talents in English football since his debut for the club in March 2019.

The teenager didn't let that extra attention faze him during his first full season in the United first team as he hit 19 goals across all competitions, but he hasn't been able to reach the same high standards this year amid a number of off-field issues.

Greenwood was sent home from international duty alongside Phil Foden in September after breaching coronavirus rules in the England camp, and he subsequently struggled for regular starts at club level in the first half of the current campaign.

Asked how he has dealt with being under the spotlight in recent months, the striker responded: "It’s just a challenge after you’ve played for the first season not many of the players know what you’re going to do second season. You’ve really got to have a few more tricks up your sleeve and do as much as you can to do the best you can really."

Solskjaer and Cavani influence

Greenwood says he has benefitted from the presence of ex-Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani this term, despite the fact the Uruguayan has kept him out of the team on a number of occassions.

The United forward has soaked up as much knowledge as he can from Cavani, who joined United on a free transfer in October, while also heeding the advice of his manager and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"They were both amazing players and obviously Edi is still playing and is still an amazing player," he said ahead of the Red Devils' Europa League clash with Real Sociedad on Thursday.

"It’s good to have both of them around in training, as I’ve been watching Edi he’s a top striker, watching his movements, the way he heads the ball, the way he gets into the right positions it’s always a benefit to have a player like that.

"Ole has been my coach it’s good to listen to him and see what he has to say about position and stuff so it’s a positive to have them both there."

Cavani and van de Beek ruled out for Manchester United clash with Real Sociedad

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave his team news ahead of the Red Devils' Europa League clash and also provided an update on Paul Pogba's injury

Edinson Cavani and Donny van de Beek have been ruled out of Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Real Sociedad with muscle injuries.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the duo would not travel to Italy for the game - which is being played in Turin due to Covid restrictions - after picking up knocks. Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay are also doubts for the fixture despite making the trip.

The Man Utd manager also confirmed Paul Pogba would not be back in action this month after coming off during the 3-3 draw against Everton with a thigh muscle strain. The France international was ruled out for a few weeks and is not expected to feature in February at all.

"Anthony (Martial) and Scott (McTominay) we will have to check them tomorrow. Donny (van de Beek) and Edinson (Cavani) definitely not travelling. Donny and Edinson are injured with muscle injuries so they won’t travel.”
