'You can wake him up at 3 am and he'll be ready by 3:15!' - Tuchel explains affection for in-form Kovacic after midfielder's brilliance against Newcastle

As Chelsea's boss sorts through his squad, he's become a quick fan of the Croatian playmaker

Thomas Tuchel has already determined that midfielder Mateo Kovacic will be one of his favourite players at Chelsea.

After Kovacic picked apart Newcastle in a 2-0 win on Monday, the manager heaped appreciation on a player who at 26 already possesses a wealth of big-game experience with stops at Inter Milan and Real Madrid before joining the Blues.

The Croatian's work-rate has made a particularly significant impression on his new boss.

What did Tuchel say about Kovacic?

"I love him," Tuchel told the 5th Stand. "You can wake him up at 3 a.m. and he will be ready to train at Cobham at 3:15."

What did Kovacic do against Newcastle?

Kovacic completed 95.6 percent of his team-high 91 pass attempts, including all four of his long ball attempts and his lone through ball try. He also led the Blues with eight successful dribbles and covered 10.21 km of space.

His combination of vision, ability with the ball and energy are what can make him so good when in his best form.

What's next for Kovacic?

Kovacic figures to be a fixture in Chelsea's lineup for the rest of the year as the club pushes for a top-four finish. A starring appearance for Croatia in this summer's Euros awaits after the campaign.

'Pulisic deserves to start' - Tuchel backs Chelsea winger despite recent run on bench

The USMNT attacker has started just once since the German coach took charge at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says that Christian Pulisic 'deserves' to start for the Blues after the American star was left on the bench in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Pulisic has started just one game since Tuchel took charge at Chelsea: a 1-0 win over Barnsley in the FA Cup.

But Tuchel, who has a relationship with Pulisic dating back to the pair's time at Borussia Dortmund, says there is no reason to be concerned with the winger's lack of recent playing time.

What did Tuchel say?

"Today, the first change was already made in the first half from injury and Christian was a very tight decision if he starts again after the cup game, or if he comes on from the bench," Tuchel said.

"We decided for another XI to start. Unfortunately, we only had three changes which makes it very difficult to give time to the players, to let everybody play, and to have an impact with the changes of fresh legs. That makes it difficult and the third change we didn't want to use too early.

"During the match, we did what we normally do which is to only change to win the match. He deserves to start, or to come in but I could only use three guys. I hope he keeps on going and he will make an important impact for us in the future."

Who has been starting ahead of Pulisic?

Mason Mount, Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham started in attack for Chelsea, with Abraham forced out with an injury to be replaced with Olivier Giroud.

Giroud and Werner scored for Chelsea's, with the latter ending his goal drought with his finish.

Kai Havertz has also started in attack recently, while Callum Hudson-Odoi has featured as a wing-back in Tuchel's system.

What has Pulisic done this season?

The U.S. men's national team forward has featured 21 times in all competitions for Chelsea this season, but has scored just two goals.

Last season, Pulisic found the back of the net 11 times in 34 appearances across his debut campaign.

Pulisic, who dealt with injury issues earlier in the season, could make his return to the U.S. men's national team for a March friendly against Northern Ireland.

'It's helped having someone scream at me in German!' - Werner thrilled to work with 'good guy' Tuchel at Chelsea

The forward broke his much-discussed goal drought with a finish against Newcastle on Monday

Chelsea striker Timo Werner says that Thomas Tuchel's arrival has been a major lift for him at Stamford Bridge as the forward now has someone that can yell at him in German.

Werner ended his extended goal drought on Monday, scoring Chelsea's second goal in a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

With the goal, Werner found the back of the net for only the second time in 20 matches, but the German striker believes he's now reaching his best under Tuchel.

What did Werner have to say?

"It's helped me that someone can scream at me in German! [Tuchel's] a really good guy, has a good idea of the football we want to play and, when we have more and more training sessions with him, we will get better and better," Werner told BBC Sport.

"A few weeks ago we were somewhere and nowhere and we were a lot of points behind fourth place. We want to keep going. [We're] only four points to second place and lots have said we won't reach the top four at the end of the season, but here we are.

"We have a good shape, we're back on track."

Why has Werner struggled?

Werner got off to a hot start at Chelsea, scoring a brace while assisting new team-mate Kai Havertz for a third in an October draw with Southampton.

However, since then, the German has scored just two Premier League goals as Chelsea bounced in and out of the top four race.

Those bounces eventually cost Frank Lampard his job, with Tuchel brought in to replace the Blues legend.

Michael Ballack says that he believes Werner's struggles are down to a difference in styles, with Chelsea playing a far different brand of football than RB Leipzig.

Werner, meanwhile, admitted last week that his drought was getting to him, while the Chelsea forward said on Monday that he feels his own adjustment period has been difficult during the pandemic-hit season.

"Not only difficult for me; it's difficult for everyone," Werner said. "New country, new league and we started the season well, scoring goals and making assists but then I had a long period without scoring.

"At the end, you have to keep pushing because it's a team sport and we want to win. Doesn't matter if I score or someone else, as long as we win."

What's next for Werner and Chelsea?

With Monday's win, Chelsea are now in fourth in the Premier League, level on points with fifth-place West Ham and two points ahead of sixth-place Liverpool.

The Blues are set to face Southampton on Saturday before turning their focus towards the Champions League and a clash with Atletico Madrid on February 23.

'Firmino is Liverpool's MVP' – ex-Hoffenheim scout ranks Liverpool star ahead of Mane & Salah

The man who first tracked the No. 9 as a talent evaluator in Germany says the attacker is the Reds' most important weapon

Liverpool's signing of Roberto Firmino in 2015 established the first building block for an eventual attacking big three that has brought Champions League and Premier League glory to Merseyside. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane would follow Firmino to complete the imposing trifecta, bringing their own qualities to the side without diminishing Firmino's unique creative influence.

Firmino's rise in England has been a continuation of his rapid development at his previous club Hoffenheim, where his former employers still speak of him as a special figure. Lutz Pfannenstiel, who first scouted him for Hoffenheim, even said the Brazilian playmaker is "Liverpool's MVP".

Goal and DAZN conversed with people central to Firmino's growth in Germany, and the highlights of those exclusive interviews are shared below.

What did the former Hoffenheim scout say about Firmino?

"Everyone talks about Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah," Pfannenstiel said. "But from my point of view, Roberto is Liverpool's MVP. He is the one who runs the most, creates the spaces and creates a lot of chances. He sort of lets the other two shine. That's rewarded within his team, but for me it sometimes gets short shrift in the coverage.

"Klopp taking over at Liverpool was the best thing that could have happened from Roberto's point of view. He knows exactly what the coach expects from him: Disciplined pressing, high, aggressive tackling. That's exactly what he learned at Hoffenheim, he knew it inside out and it's a kind of automatism for him. So Klopp's way of playing fits like a glove."

Pfannenstiel claims that while Firmino always had his flair and shiny smile, the finer aspects of his game took shape once he received his German influence at Hoffenheim.

"This slim, wiry Brazilian with the big white teeth and his braces had that certain something," the former Hoffenheim scout said. "It always seemed as if Roberto was always a little step ahead of his team-mates and opponents. Still, I would never have predicted that one day he could mature into a top international player.

"It wasn't so easy at the beginning, the game was very fast and very physical. But his regular extra shifts in training helped him adapt quickly.

"Because of his great basic tactical understanding, he understood incredibly quickly how he had to work against the ball. Roberto has always played Brazilian, but thought German. The mixture of these two mentalities also makes him a difference-making player now at Liverpool."

Firmino is 'the most inconspicuous world-class player'

Johannes Spors, a former video analyst at Hoffenheim who worked with Firmino, said the player goes under the radar because of his desire to make others better.

"Roberto is the most inconspicuous world-class player there is," Spors said. "He has the skills to shine himself, but often lets others shine because he works so hard. It's not a coincidence that he is invaluable for Klopp."

He added that Firmino's work-rate has always been notable, even as a younger Bundesliga prospect.

"It was immediately clear that he has extraordinary creative abilities," Spors said. "But in addition, he was at the top of his game in terms of intensity. He was the player with the most sprints in relation to his total mileage. That is unusual for his position."

How the Hoffenheim transfer came together

Talent consultant Christian Rapp was deeply involved in Firmino's move to Germany and discussed the discovery process as well as the inner workings of how Hoffenheim followed through on their interest in him.

"Roberto caught our eye relatively early on, he made his debut in the second division at a young age with Figueirense," Rapp said. "A close partner of ours from Brazil was in contact with him. He gave me a very favourably cut tape. At that time, people still exchanged CDs.

"Like many other players, we had him roughly on our radar and, after viewing the material, decided that we wanted to bring him to Europe for his further sporting development. We went to Germany with the material and talked to all kinds of people.

"Looking back, it all seems very simple. But you have to realise that signing a young Brazilian player always involves a certain risk. It wasn't that easy to find interested parties.

"When we met Roberto personally, he was extremely young, he had just got his first braces. At some point, we managed to convince Hoffenheim's sports director Ernst Tanner and coach Ralf Rangnick that they should take a look at the player. Hoffenheim trusted us because they had previously had good experiences with Carlos Eduardo and Luiz Gustavo."

One performance in particular sealed the deal for Tanner, Hoffenheim's sporting director.

"Roberto has played around 40 games for Figueirense, I have seen many of them - but this was his best," Rapp explained. "Before the referee had even blown his whistle for half-time, Ernst stood up and said: 'We absolutely have to do this. He has to come immediately in January.'"

Tuchel confirms Mendy is Chelsea's number one despite Kepa starting against Newcastle

Thomas Tuchel has said he selected Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal against Newcastle as he wanted to allow the goalkeeper to find some rhythm, but confirmed following the match that Edouard Mendy is his number one.

The Spaniard was reportedly one of the reasons why Frank Lampard was sacked, with the former Blues boss not convinced by Kepa and so elected to sign Mendy last year.

Mendy has conceded only once in four games since Tuchel took charge, an own goal following an error from Antonio Rudiger, but he was left out against Newcastle - with Kepa retaining his place after keeping a clean sheet in the FA Cup win over Barnsley on Thursday.

What was said?

"We need a strong Kepa in our squad,” Tuchel told Sky Sports. “He had a good game in the cup so we decided to give him another match to build up a little bit of rhythm, confidence and to trust him, because he did very well.

“At the same time, we can give Edou the chance to mentally recover because it is a demanding position mentally and concentration-wise so with one decision we have both advantages.”

Following the 2-0 win, Tuchel confirmed that he wanted to give Kepa a run in the team but that Mendy was ahead of him in the pecking order.

“Edou is the number one, this is clear,” Tuchel told Sky Sports. “It was clear before the game and it stays like this.

“I am happy Kepa continued with a second clean sheet. It was the moment to let him feel the rhythm and build up his confidence.

“It was clear before that we hoped for the best performance, but Edou will be in goal from now on as he recovered physically and mentally and right now, he is the number one.”

Tuchel’s tinkering

The German took charge on January 26 and has been assessing his squad for the past few weeks.

He has made a raft of changes to personnel and formations and it is likely to continue for some time until he settles on his preferred XI.

Video: In form Chelsea add to Liverpool crisis with Anfield win

Tammy Abraham has missed out on a chance to impress new manager Thomas Tuchel after going off injured in Chelsea’s clash with Newcastle.

The England forward was handed a start after Tuchel was impressed with his performance against Barnsley in the FA Cup, but his evening lasted only 20 minutes.

After going down with an ankle problem, Abraham - Chelsea's top scorer this season with 12 goals - was treated on the field but could not continue and was replaced by Olivier Giroud.

What happened to Abraham at Stamford Bridge?

Abraham went in pursuit of a through ball, but the retreating Jamaal Lascelles got back to make an excellent saving tackle.

In making the challenge, Lascelles got the ball but caught Abraham with his follow through.

Having been on the stretch, Abraham fell awkwardly and immediately clutched his ankle and looked in pain.

He stayed down for some time before being given treatment and ultimately hobbling off to be replaced by Giroud.

The severity of the injury is not yet known.

Abraham’s form

The forward kept his place in the starting XI after scoring the winning goal against Barnsley last week.

But aside from goals in the cup - he netted a hat-trick against Luton - his cupboard has been bare since scoring three goals either side of Christmas.

His absence will hand a chance to Giroud, but he is not a long-term option for Tuchel.

Chelsea’s busy fixture list

In what is a condensed season due to the late start, Chelsea have a raft of games on the horizon.

The Blues are in the second week of Champions League action, so face Atletico Madrid over two legs on February 23 and March 17. They also have Premier League games with Southampton and Manchester United before February draws to a close.

Gerso Fernandes bids Sporting Kansas City farewell with Jeju United circling

Ahead of his switch to Jeju World Cup Stadium, the Guinea-Bissau winger has said goodbye to the Major Soccer League outfit

Gerso Fernandes has posted a farewell message to Sporting Kansas City ahead of his anticipated move to South Korean top-flight side Jeju United.

The 29-year-old Bissau-Guinean winger is expected to be announced as a Jeju Mountaineers player after agreeing to his terms with the newly-promoted team.

Fernandes’ Instagram post hints there will be no doubt about his switch to Nam Ki-il’s squad.

Alongside an image of himself in a Sporting Kansas jersey, the  former Estoril and Moreirense man wrote:

“Has been four years in a great great club, with amazing staff, incredible teammates and the best fans!!,” Fernandes wrote.

“In the meantime, I found the love of my life and met her family, they opened the door since day one and they love me so much that I can’t even be thankful enough for it!! Emmy Fernandes, (Mila on the way) and a cup in my pocket, I couldn’t ask for better!!

“Kansas City is home and Sporting Kansas City my club. I’m very thankful for everyone that somehow crossed paths and became good friends outside of soccer!!

“I just had to trust in God through the process and it turned out better than I could have ever imagined (as always when we trust him) I am beyond blessed and so thankful for all I have been afforded and looking forward to what lies ahead.

“We love you and are going to miss you all! We will be back!! Much love KC, Gerso.”

After a season at Portuguese side Belenenses, the African star joined the Wizards on January 2, 2017 on a three-year designated player contract, with an option for a fourth year.

In his maiden season at the Children's Mercy Park Stadium, he scored eight goals in 33 Major League Soccer outings. It would be recalled that he scored a hat-trick in a 3–0 win against Seattle Sounders FC in May 2017.

The following season, he found the net on six occasions from the same number of games while his last two seasons produced five goals from 48 league fixtures.

He was out of contract at Sporting Kansas City following their 2020 season and rejected a contract offer from the club.

U20 Afcon: Ghana coach Zito reveals target for tournament opener against Tanzania

The Black Satellites boss looks ahead to their first game of the youth championship on Tuesday

Ghana coach Abdul Karim Zito has set sights on three points as they open their 2021 Africa U20 Cup of Nations campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday.

The Black Satellites are set to take on the East African side at Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou in a Group C opener.

Ghana qualified for the championship by reaching the final of the Wafu Zone B Cup of Nations in Benin where they ultimately won the cup.

"We were champions in our zone, so we’re here to try and go for the ultimate. That is the right mind we brought to Mauritania,” Zito said at the pre-match press conference on Monday.

“I can’t say I know much about Tanzania but I saw them on YouTube. But at the end of the day, there is an opportunity for all of us to meet and then assess ourselves from the beginning to maybe 15 minutes. Then you will see whatever a team has brought.

“I can’t tell you much about Tanzania, I don’t know them, I don’t know whether they know us but we are in here to face anybody. Whether I know you or I don’t know you, at the end of the day we are going to meet on the field of play and there, it is our work to read the game and then see exactly what we have to bring.

“Seriously, it's a big opportunity for us if we are able to win the first game because the first game gives you the motivation to play the games ahead. I think during the Wafu B, we were able to beat Nigeria and that carried us to the semi-final, so playing Tanzania, I won’t say it's a must-win but winning is our first motto before meeting the rest.

“We want to tackle the game accordingly because we can’t talk of Morocco if we have not finished playing Tanzania. So for now, Tanzania is my headache and if I’m able to go through Tanzania, the rest will follow."

After the Tanzania opener, Ghana will take on Morocco on Friday before wrapping up the first round with a clash with Gambia on February 22.

The Black Satellites are seeking to rule Africa for the fourth time after successes in 1993, 1999 and 2009.

The top four at Afcon ought to have been rewarded with tickets for the Fifa U20 World Cup but the global gathering has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Leicester City playmaker Maddison 'fights' teammate Amartey over controversial Liverpool goal

The England star opens up on the controversial goal in the Premier League meeting with the Reds

Leicester City attacker James Maddison believes the stadium announcer erred in allocating what he believes is his goal to teammate Daniel Amartey in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Liverpool.

The Foxes' first goal was at the centre of controversy, partly for what some thought should have been ruled out for offside, and secondly for uncertainty about who claims the goal, with both Amartey and Maddison believing to have had the final touch.

“The referee gives a penalty and then it's a free-kick and we had a couple of free-kicks in a similar area, to be honest," Maddison explains, as reported by his club's official website.

“Liverpool keep a high line and I wasn't able to actually get into the gap that I was putting it in, which is good defending sometimes and sometimes maybe we can be a bit more aggressive with the attacking.

“I almost try to tell the players, on free-kicks like that, out in the wide area that are close to the box, just sprint to the goal.

“It's hard to pick an exact player out, so I'll try and put it in with pace in that corridor of uncertainty, as people call it, and to get people running at the goal, with little glances and little flicks, but on that one, I tried to just hit it a bit lower, a bit harder, and it actually worked exactly how I tried to.

“Whether someone gets a touch or it goes straight in, I aimed for the far corner, and then if someone gets a touch, Alisson, it's hard for him to come to the ball, just in case one of our players gets a touch. If no one touches it, sometimes it goes in the far corner.

“So, that's exactly what we wanted. And I know the stadium announcer tried to say it was Daniel Amartey's goal, but I watched it back and he doesn't touch it, and I know he doesn't get many and I love Daniel, but I think I'll have to claim that one!”

The controversial 78th-minute goal, ultimately awarded to Maddison by the Premier League, was a crucial equaliser as Mohamed Salah had given Liverpool a 67th-minute lead.

Two late goals from Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes in the final 10 minutes ensured a sensational win for the home side at King Power Stadium.

While Maddison has scored seven strikes in 22 league outings for Brendan Rodgers' outfit this season, Amartey is still in search of his first goal after six outings.

Sherifatu Sumaila fires Maccabi Kiryat Gat to Israeli Women's Cup semi-final

The Ghanaian was in impressive form as she helped her side subdue their hosts to advance in the domestic competition

Sherifatu Sumaila was on target as Maccabi Kiryat Gat pipped Ironi Ramat HaSharon 2-0 to reach the semi-final of the Israeli Women's Cup after Sunday's quarter-final encounter.

Following a 2-0 win Bnot Netanya last Thursday, Kiryat Gat were eyeing a spot in the last four of the competition against Ramat HaSharon, who defeated Maccabi Holon 3-0 on the same day.

Having grabbed her first goal of the season at Netanya, the Ghana international was handed her sixth start of the season in all outings and ensured her side maintained their impressive form.

Despite creating many chances, the teams could not be separated at half-time at Ramat HaSharon Stadium.

After the break, Kiryat Gat made an enterprising restart of the contest, and finally found a breakthrough when Eden Avital broke the deadlock in the 75th minute of the encounter.

On the brink of full-time, Sumaila struck to guarantee her Israeli top-flight side's passage to the semi-final of the tournament.

Ghana's Sumaila was in action for 92 minutes, scoring her second goal in six appearances for Kiryat Gat, and featured alongside Nigeria's Uchechi Sunday and Cameroon's Genevieve Mbeleck.

The African trio will be eager to impress in front of goal when second-placed ASA Tel Aviv after the international break on March 1.

LIVE: Chelsea v Newcastle

That’s it for now. Until next time, goodbye!

The signs look ominous for the rest of the chasing pack in the race for the Champions League. Newcastle, meanwhile, are seven points above the relegation zone, though they have played a game more than 18th-placed Fulham.

It’s a fourth successive league win for Tuchel, who has taken 13 points out of 15 to lift Chelsea into the Champions League places, with Giroud and Werner scoring in the first half to seal the points.

90' + 3' FULL TIME: CHELSEA 2-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

90' + 1' Lewis is down holding his knee. The left-back has had a difficult game today, and was at fault for Werner’s goal.

89' Newcastle have only managed one shot fewer on target (four) than Chelsea, but Kepa has not had too many excellent stops to make, with the only standout that save from Willock. Wilson really has been a big miss for the visitors today.

87' As it stands, Chelsea are cruising into the top four, moving above West Ham and Liverpool. Newcastle, meanwhile, will be staying in 17th.

85' A corner from the left is whipped in by Fraser, but it is cleared by a towering header from Rudiger, who had Carroll lingering with intent close by.

83' Bar that chance for Willock, which was well saved by Kepa, Newcastle really have not come close enough to pushing Chelsea as the second half has worn on.

80' An immediate impact from James. He takes on a shot from the right side of the area, but Darlow sticks out a leg and directs it around the upright.

75' Over! Lascelles gets up to connect with Fraser’s corner, but he sends his header above the crossbar.

74' Good save! Another strong bit of goalkeeping from Kepa, who scampers across his line to leap across and tip Willock’s header around the post.

67' Almiron has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games for Newcastle, as many as in his previous 32 in the competition. However, all four of his strikes this season have come in home games, and the playmaker has been on the fringes of things so far.

62' There really seems little trouble for Chelsea, even though Newcastle are working hard. The Blues have had 68.1 per cent possession in total.

60' A mistake in Chelsea’s midfield hands possession to Shelvey who, having spotted Kepa off his line, attempts to catch the Chelsea goalkeeper out, but he doesn’t get enough power on it and Kepa calmly chests it down.

57' Before tonight, Tuchel has never previously managed a top-flight match on a Monday – his last match in any competition on this day was in August 2016, leading Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal against SV Eintracht Trier 05.

55' After that spell of Newcastle pressure, Chelsea are back retaining some steady possession, keeping their visitors at arms’ length.

52' Willock scored a debut goal against Southampton, and the Arsenal loanee takes on a shot from the centre of the area, only to slice it off target.

50' Chelsea have not lost a Premier League game when leading by two or more goals at half-time since losing their first ever such game in the competition vs Norwich City in September 1992 (P130 W127 D3 since).

48' It’s a decent effort from Shelvey, who gets his effort up and over the bar. It was heading towards the left-hand corner, but just lacked the power to beat Kepa, who lunged across to make a decent stop.

47' Newcastle force Kepa into his first save – Gayle’s tame effort easily gathered in by the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. The Magpies are then back on the attack, winning a free-kick around 30 yards out from goal.

46' We’re back up and running for the second half.

If Newcastle are to get anything out of this, they must find a way to get Saint-Maximin, Almiron and Gayle on the ball in the final third. Chelsea have had complete control, and Tuchel’s side are heading into the top four as it stands.

A routine performance so far from Chelsea, who hold a comfortable 2-0 lead heading into the break thanks to Giroud’s opener and Werner’s first league goal since November – which ended a run of exactly 1000 minutes without a strike. Newcastle have worked hard, but not come close to testing the Blues.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 2-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED.

45' + 1' Another opportunity for Mount, but he rather snatches at it, lashing a low effort across the face of goal from a tight angle.

44' Given Kepa's issues in previous league matches, Newcastle have not come close to testing Chelsea's goalkeeper anywhere near enough. Indeed, they have managed just two attempts so far, with neither on target.

42' Another effort on Newcastle’s goal as Chelsea look to get this match wrapped up. Mount gets a shot off on the turn, but slices across it and sends it wide.

40' There has been a check for handball on VAR, but the goal stands. Finally, Werner has ended his barren run. Will that be the start of a scoring streak?

36' Against no side has Giroud scored more Premier League goals than against Newcastle (nine - level with Aston Villa).

34' CLOSE! That goal just won’t come for Werner! He latches onto a terrific ball to the edge of the box from Kovacic and gets off a fantastic first-time effort, but Darlow just manages to tip it over.

33' Werner has failed to score with any of his last 30 attempts in the league (including two so far this evening), since netting against Sheffield United back in November, but he played a key role there as Giroud netted his tenth of the season in all competitions.

30' Werner wanted a foul for that tackle from Lewis, who did catch the German international with a flailing arm, though it was in no way intentional. Werner did receive a cut lip for his troubles, though, and will need treatment.

28' A chance for Newcastle to get their big men up the pitch, with the visitors forcing a succession of corners. Neither find their mark, however, and Werner attempts to break. Lewis, though, makes a fine recovery challenge.

26' Huge chance! Chelsea stretch the pitch once again, a long ball out to the left finding Alonso, who had made a charge into the area. He directs a header into the path of Werner but, on the lunge, he can’t prod his effort home.

24' Giroud has now become the 17th player to make 100 appearances in the Premier League as a substitute.

22' A rare attack for Newcastle, as Lewis finds Saint-Maximin, who breaks at pace into the area. He tries to set himself and get a shot off, but his path to goal is quickly blocked off.

17' Abraham is back on the pitch, but he is not moving freely at all – it appears that his right ankle is the issue. Giroud is warming up, so that’s one possible change coming up if Abraham cannot recover.

16' VAR has checked for a foul, and there is nothing doing. Abraham, meanwhile, has certainly come off worse, and will require some treatment.

15' CHANCE! That could easily have been 1-0 to Chelsea. Abraham raced behind Newcastle’s defence to latch onto a lofted pass. He takes it under his control but, before he can get a shot off, Lascelles lunges in and makes a well-timed, albeit robust, challenge.

14' Another half-chance for Chelsea, as Mount delivers another inviting outswinging corner, which Werner meets, but the former RB Leipzig star sends his header well wide.

12' Hudson-Odoi is seeing plenty of the ball so far, with Chelsea looking to stretch the pitch as much as possible. Mount is pulling the strings, handed a free role from his position in the front three.

10' Chelsea have controlled this from the off, though that should come as no surprise. Werner has space down the left, but fails to make anything of it, with his cross easily blocked.

8' More slack marking from a corner gives Chelsea another chance. Abraham is the one who gets free on this occasion, but he can’t turn his header on target.

7' Chance! Azpilicueta meets a corner from the right, which was delivered by Mount. The Chelsea captain directs his header goal wards, but Krafth is on hand to divert it over the bar.

5' Chelsea have only lost one of their 25 home Premier League games against Newcastle (W18 D6), a 2-0 defeat in May 2012.

3' An early save for Darlow, as Chelsea get off to a swift start. Hudson-Odoi cuts in from the right and lays it off to Kovacic, whose sweeping pass picks out Alonso. The wing-back unleashes a powerful effort, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper is alert at his near post.

1' KICK-OFF! We are up and running in this clash.

The teams are out at Stamford Bridge. Kick-off is coming up in a few moments!

Several enforced changes for Newcastle, who are without top scorer Callum Wilson, who sustained an injury in the win over Southampton – Gayle is his replacement. They keep their diamond system, with the suspended Jeff Hendrick replaced in midfield by Hayden, who moves out of defence with Lascelles and Clark returning. Krafth also comes in for Manquillo at right-back.

NEWCASTLE SUBSTITUTES: Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Andy Carroll, Ryan Fraser, Martin Dubravka, Matthew Longstaff, Joelinton.

NEWCASTLE (4-3-1-2): Karl Darlow; Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis; Joseph Willock, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey; Miguel Almiron; Dwight Gayle, Allan Saint-Maximin.

Six changes from Tuchel, compared to the side that started in the midweek FA Cup win over Barnsley. Kepa played that match and retains his place, making his first league appearance since October, while Christensen, Hudson-Odoi, Alonso and Abraham also remain in the starting XI.

CHELSEA SUBSTITUTES: Reece James, Kurt Zouma, Emerson, Edouard Mendy, Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud, Ben Chilwell, N’Golo Kante, Hakim Ziyech.

CHELSEA (3-4-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Cesar Azplicueta, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger; Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso; Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Timo Werner.

It is a rather different story for struggling Newcastle, who sit in 17th, though there is a seven-point gap between the Magpies and the bottom three. Steve Bruce’s team have, however, won two of their last three games, recording a 3-2 victory while down to nine men against Southampton last time out.

Chelsea have been rejuvenated under Thomas Tuchel, who has guided the Blues to three successive wins since drawing his first match in charge after replacing Frank Lampard. A win today would take them into the top four.

Lingard has no future at Man Utd, they've moved past him - Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand believes Jesse Lingard needs to turn the page on his Manchester United career and look to secure a permanent move to West Ham.

Lingard joined the Hammers on loan in January and has made a bright start to life under David Moyes in east London.

The England international spoke recently about not getting a fair crack under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford, but Ferdinand feels he has no chance of forcing his way back into the United side.

What was said?

"What's his ambition here, beyond this season," Ferdinand told BT Sport. "What is he looking to do?

"If West Ham don't put a bid in to buy him at the end of this loan I think this loan has to be seen as a failure.

"That's got to be his aim - to get a bid from West Ham and other clubs to take him out of Man Utd.

"Because I don't see him going back to Man Utd and really affecting that squad now.

"I think they've moved past him with the players they've recruited, he doesn't feature, hasn't done for so long.”

Does Lingard have a future at United?

Upon his departure, Solskjaer said he wanted Lingard to secure regular playing time at West Ham and return to Old Trafford with confidence restored and duly fight for a place in his side.

So, if Solskjaer is to be believed, the door remains open for Lingard. But the reality appears somewhat different.

There does not look to be a place for Lingard. Solskjaer has Bruno Fernandes as his playmaker, while Donny van de Beek is pushing for a chance and Paul Pogba can also operate in the attacking-midfield role if required. If he wants to operate on the flank, as he has been at West Ham, he would have to dislodge Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford.

Should Lingard return, he’d find himself well down the pecking order and feeding off scraps. At 28, he needs to be playing regularly and that does not look realistic in Manchester.

LIVE: Bayern Munich v Arminia Bielefeld

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!

Bayern extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to five points over RB Leipzig and next up for them is a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt. Meanwhile Arminia pull level on points with Hertha Berlin and could move out of the bottom three with a victory or draw against Wolfsburg next time out.

The referee calls time on a thrilling game at the Allianz Arena, which ends 3-3 despite the visitors twice holding a two-goal advantage. They led 2-0 at the break, but Lewandowski cut their lead in half just three minutes after the restart, however, Arminia got a third less than a minute later. Bayern then rallied and made it 3-3 after goals from Tolisso and Davies, but couldn’t get another to win the game.

90' + 3' FULL-TIME: BAYERN MUNICH 3-3 ARMINIA BIELEFELD

90' + 2' Moreno has been excellent for Arminia today, he has made a number of saves to deny Bayern and looks steady. The visitors are just trying to hold on for a point now.

90' There will be a minimum of three minutes added time played at the end of the second half.

87' Not too far away! Lewandowski gets on the end of deep free-kick into the box, he heads it back across goal, but none of his teammates gamble on it and Arminia clear the danger.

86' Bayern are still the side in possession here and are pressing forward in search of that fourth goal, but they also need to be wary of the Arminia counter-attacks.

84' A point could be vital in the visitors bid to stay in the Bundesliga this season, it would move them level on points with Hertha Berlin, only remaining in the relegation places on goal difference.

82' Kunze with an ambitious effort from the edge of the penalty area, but he gets it all wrong and the ball flies high and wide of the Bayern goal.

77' There is still plenty of time for either team to go on and get a winning goal here, but Bayern are looking the more likely at the moment.

75' Bayern have only lost one of their last 45 Bundesliga games against promoted sides (W42, D2): 4-1 versus Stuttgart on match day 34 in May 2018 with the title already sealed.

73' We have a VAR check on the goal as it is debatable whether Sule or Cordova got the final touch on the ball. However, the decision stands and the officials rule the goal out.

72' OFFSIDE! Cordova has the ball in the back of the net for the visitors but the flag has gone up and it has been ruled out for offside. Cordova flicks the ball on for Klos, who races into the box and then squares it back to the striker, who fires it into the back of the net.

72' CLOSE! Lewandowski goes very close to scoring, after he gets through on goal, but Moreno smothers the shot and then the striker heads the rebound just wide of the post.

71' Bayern are finally level, but will the visitors be able to go down the other end and get another goal to catch Bayern out?

68' It is all Bayern, they have picked up the pace of their game and you can see that they have upped their performance by a gear or two. It could be a long half an hour for the visitors.

66' Stoppage in play here as Nilsson is down with an injury after he is caught late by Davies, the medical staff are on the pitch, but he should be fine to continue.

64' Cordova is fed through on goal after Arminia catch Bayern out on the break and the striker seems to only have Neuer to beat, but his miss times his shot and doesn't catch the ball cleanly, so Bayern get players back and clear the danger.

60' SAVE! Coman finds some time and space on the edge of the box and he tries to curl the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. However, Moreno gets up brilliantly to tip it over the crossbar.

56' Coman has arguably been Bayern's biggest threat today and he does brilliantly down the left wing, gets to the byline and then fires a cross into the box, but Moreno gets a hand to it and pushes it away to safety.

55' The visitors look full of confidence now and they seem comfortable despite Bayern dominating the possession, but they just can't seem to test Moreno.

53' Arminia have only won one of their last 18 competitive games away at Bayern (D2, L15): 4-0 in March 1979. They’ve lost on each of their last nine trips to play Bayern, only ever enduring a longer losing streak in the Bundesliga at Bremen (10 matches between 1971 and 2000).

51' There was just 55 seconds between the two goals, Bayern just switched off at the back and allowed the visitors to go on the attack and they've punished them once again.

46' The second half is under way!

Bayern need something to change in the second half, they look a little short of ideas in the final third and Lewandowski has hardly touched the ball so far, with Bielefeld defending really well.

The visitors lead 2-0 at the break after goals from Vlap and Pieper, which have stunned Bayern and they are yet to respond. Arminia have taken their chances and capitalised on some poor defending by the hosts, who just haven’t got going and they’ve been out fought on a snowy pitch. Sane has had a couple of chances for Bayern, but Moreno has been in fine form to deny him.

45' + 5' HALF-TIME: BAYERN MUNICH 0-2 ARMINIA BIELEFELD

45' + 4' There's no sign of a Bayern comeback at the moment and it looks like Arminia will be deservedly ahead at half-time. Will the hosts make some changes ahead of the second half?

45' + 2' Bayern are pushing forward in search of a goal to make it 2-1 just before the break, but the visitors are throwing everything at them, blocking every cross and denying them the chance to get into the penalty area.

45' There will be a minimum of five minutes added time played at the end of the first half.

43' There’s not long left to play before the end of the first half, can Bayern pull one back before the half-time whistle?

40' There is a problem here for Arminia, with Doan down on the pitch and it doesn't look like he is going to be able to continue, so an early change is going to be necessary.

39' Bayern are currently on a 19-game unbeaten run at home in the Bundesliga (W16, D3). They last put together a longer streak between March 2016 and April 2018 (38 matches at home).

35' SAVE! Another good stop by Moreno, he denies Sane as he is feed in behind and he only had the keeper to beat, but the keeper makes himself big and makes a terrific save with his feet. However it wouldn't have counted anyway as the offside flag goes up.

34' Coman whips an excellent ball to Sane at the far post in the box and he tries to square it to Lewandowski, but it is blocked and then so is the follow up effort. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

32' SAVE! Alaba lofts a lovely ball over the top of the Arminia defence for Choupo-Moting, he takes a touch and then tries to flick it into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. However, Moreno brilliantly gets down and gets a touch on it to send it wide.

31' We’re past the half an hour mark now at the Allianz Arena and it remains Arminia who lead 1-0 against Bayern, with the hosts yet to really get going.

29' Blocked! Sane once again does well down the right wing, this time he gets to the byline and then tries to drill a low cross into the path of Lewandowski, but Pieper slides in and makes an excellent block.

27' Almost! Sane whips a superb deep cross into the penalty area, which Tolisso tries to get on the end of, but Moreno just gets there in the nick of time and palms it out of his way, before it hits his own defender and then back into his arms.

25' These stoppages are interrupting the flow of the game as it is increasingly difficult to fashion a chance as neither are getting into the final third and testing the opposition defence. Arminia's goal is the difference so far.

23' The ball is starting to slow down now when played along the floor, the snow is really building up and the ground staff are back out on the pitch trying to clear the lines. This may happen a few times throughout the game!

21' Decent run down the right wing by Sane as he is picked out by a good cross field ball, the winger then cuts inside and whips a cross into the box towards Lewandowski, but it is too close to Moreno, who easily gathers.

19' It has been quite a hard fought game in the middle of the pitch in the last few minutes, with both teams battling for possession and there haven't been any more attacks or chances on goal.

17' For just the second time in their Bundesliga history, Bayern will play on a Monday – they previously lost 4-1 away at Werder in April 1993. For Bielefeld, it will be their third outing on this day of the week – they’ve even played on a Monday in Munich before (1-0 loss at 1860 Munich in September 1997).

15' We are ready to get back under way now after the ground staff cleared the lines on the pitch as well, as they were also covered in snow.

13' We're just having a quick ball change here, as the snow is really coming down now and is laying on the pitch, so the officials are changing to the yellow and orange ball to help the players.

11' Bayern seem more eager to push forward and pick up the pace of their game now they are a goal behind. It will be interesting to see if the visitors sit back and try and defend their lead, or push on and make it 2-0.

8' This is better from the visitors, they are pushing a little higher up the pitch and have now had a few touches on the ball. However, they don't seem to be able to get anywhere near the Bayern final third.

6' The weather may play a part here today, it is snowing very heavily in Munich and the visibility isn't great, so both teams will be keen to keep the ball down on the ground.

4' Decent effort! Choupo-Moting with a good strike from the edge of the box, after a quick turn and he spins away from his marker, before firing a low strike towards goal. However, Moreno gets across quickly and makes the save.

3' As you may expect it is Bayern who are dominating possession in the opening few minutes of the game, they have Arminia camped inside their half as they push forward.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!

The visitors have also made three changes to their team, that were defeated 3-1 against FC Koln, with Hartel, Yabo and Schipplock dropping out of the team and they have been replaced by Prietl, Vlap and Voglsammer.

Hans-Dieter Flick has made three changes to his side that played last week in the Club World Cup final, with Sarr, Tolisso and Choupo-Moting coming into the side and they have replaced Pavard, Kimmich and Serge Gnabry.

ARMINIA SUBS: Sven Schipplock, Oscar Linner, Nils Seufert, Sergio Cordova, Marcel Hartel, Masaya Okugawa, Mike van der Hoorn, Nathan De Medina, Christian Gebauer.

ARMINIA (4-2-3-1): Stefan Ortega Moreno; Cedric Brunner, Joakim Nilsson, Amos Pieper, Jacob Laursen; Manuel Prietl, Fabian Kunze; Ritsu Doan, Michel Vlap, Andreas Voglsammer, Fabian Klos.

BAYERN SUBS: Armindo Sieb, Joshua Kimmich, Tiago Dantas, Marc Roca, Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, Benjamin Pavard, Jamal Musiala, Maximilian Zaiser.

BAYERN (4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer; Bouna Sarr, Nikas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, Alphonso Davies; Corentin Tolisso, David Alaba; Leroy Sane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman: Robert Lewandowski.

Meanwhile Arminia could move out of the relegation places with three points, they are just one point from safety at the moment. They have lost their last two games, against Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Koln.

Bayern come into the game on the back of their Club World Cup success in Qatar, where they beat Tigres to claim the title. They return to Bundesliga action today and have the chance to move seven points clear at the top with a win. The Champions have won their last five on the bounce in the Bundesliga, including a 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin last time out.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE match commentary of the Bundesliga clash between Bayern Munich and Arminia Bielefeld at the Allianz Arena.

What does RB stand for in RB Leipzig?

Believe it or not, the 'RB' in RB Leipzig doesn't actually stand for 'Red Bull' - at least not officially. Here's why

RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg may be owned by the same company, but the 'RB' in their names means something different to both teams.

So what is the RB short for in RB Leipzig? Goal takes a look.

The RB in RB Leipzig stands for RasenBallsport Leipzig, not Red Bull Leipzig.

Though RB Leipzig are owned under Red Bull, who also own the likes of RB Salzburg (Red Bull Salzburg), the New York Red Bulls, RB Brazil and RB Ghana, they are officially known as RasenBallsport Leipzig and not Red Bull Leipzig because German football does not allow clubs to be named after a sponsor.

'RasenBallsport' means 'Lawn Ball Sports'.

By still using the initials RB in front of Leipzig, however, the corporate identity of the club's owners are still able to be recognised.

Additionally, the club's nickname is Die Roten Bullen ('The Red Bulls'), another nod to the energy drink company who own the club.

And though RB Leipzig are not officially known as 'Red Bull Leipzig', the name of their home stadium is the Red Bull Arena.

The ownership of RB Leipzig dates back to 2005, when Red Bull GmbH bought SV Austria Salzburg and renamed the side to RB Salzburg.

The owners revamped the side, changing the team's traditional strip from violet to red and white, which led to some of the team's supporters founding a new side called SV Austria Salzburg.

Moreover, RB Leipzig is not fully owned by the Red Bull company entirely, even though they are the main shareholder.

Germany have a '50 plus 1' rule, where the club's supporters must own 50 percent of the stake and fans have the ultimate casting vote if disagreements arise - but the owners found a workaround with this by stating that the club only has 17 official members (compared to Borussia Dortmund's 170,000 by 2009).

They made this possible by charging €1000 for their annual gold-standard membership, which is an unaffordable number for most Germans.

And then, since the club are owned by the company's associates, corporate partners and employees, they have the power to veto those who are applying for a membership.

Due to their unique membership structure, RB Leipzig have an unpopular reputation across Germany.

Sifama: Kaizer Chiefs teenager reunited with Middendorp after Maritzburg United loan move

The Team of Choice’s transfer activity continued as they completed another deadline day signing

Kaizer Chiefs have sent midfielder Keletso Sifama to Maritzburg United on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 17-year-old arrives in KwaZulu-Natal after making just three appearances for Chiefs in all competitions this season.

At Maritzburg, he will be reunited with former Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp, who handed him his Premier Soccer League debut against Polokwane City in August 2020.

“Striker Keletso Sifama has moved to Maritzburg United on loan until the end of the 2020/21 season. We wish the youngster all of the best during his spell at United,” Chiefs announced the loan deal.

Maritzburg also confirmed the arrival of the South Africa youth international.

“The club is delighted to welcome Keletso Sifama on loan from Kaizer Chiefs until the end of the season. Welcome to the Team Of Choice, Keletso,” the club said.

After Sifama struggled to command regular playing minutes at Chiefs, it remains to be seen if Middendorp will invest faith in the teenager with more game time in Maritzburg’s fight against relegation.

The teenage star will be fighting for a place in midfield against seasoned players like Daylon Claasen, Daniel Morgan, Keagan Buchanan, and Travis Graham, who are all regulars.

The acquisition of Sifama underlined a busy day for Maritzburg who were trying to beat Monday’s transfer deadline.

Earlier in the day, the Team of Choice announced the signing of right-back Dusan Stevic from Serbian Super Liga side FK Napredak Krusevac on an 18-month deal.

During this transfer period, Maritzburg’s bid to fortify their squad amid the fight against relegation also saw them recently signing goalkeeper Marcelo Engelhardt from Eintracht Braunschweig, who are campaigning in the German 2. Bundesliga.

Engelhardt has already made two appearances for Maritzburg so far, one in a Premier Soccer League match and another in the Nedbank Cup 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United.

The Team of Choice are second from bottom with nine points from 15 games.

Their number of points are the same as basement side Black Leopards who have played a game fewer.

Deadline day signings Sifama and Stevic could make their debut when Maritzburg host Orlando Pirates in a league match on February 27.

‘They’ve got quick brains’ – Tanganga on Manchester City’s Sterling and Foden

The English defender of Congolese descent discusses playing against the England internationals in Spurs' defeat to the Citizens

Japhet Tanganga has described Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden as players with "quick brains".

The DR Congo prospect was handed his first Premier League game of the season in Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-0 defeat to the Citizens.

Rodri’s penalty and a brace from Ilkay Gundogan were all Pep Guardiola’s side required to silence Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.

Playing for the 90 minutes at the Etihad Stadium, the 21-year-old explained what it is like playing against the English internationals.

“They are two quality players and the thing with them is, the more time you give them, or if you are back peddling and dive in, that gives them a chance because they’ve got quick brains, quick feet, you have to watch the ball at all times, concentrate and work with the team, talking together,” Tanganga told the club website.

“As a young player, to play in these games is not something you can take for granted. It shows trust that the manager puts you in this magnitude of game, so I needed to approach it right, be aggressive and know these guys are where they are for a reason.”

The youngster also rued the failure of Harry Kane’s freekick to find the target which would have given his team the energy, while expressing his delighted in playing his maiden game of the 2020-21 campaign.

“We started well, we had a plan, the more time you give them on the ball they are going to get that momentum, so we knew we had to get after them, press them and we started well, but the penalty changed the game,” he continued.

“If Harry’s free-kick goes in, we get that momentum. In the second half, they showed their quality and once they scored the second goal, their confidence was sky-high.

“As a defender, as well as you play, it’s never nice to concede one goal, let alone three.

“I’m happy to make my first appearance in the Premier League this season but we need to look back at it as a team and see where we can do better, but we move on to the next one on Thursday.”

Tanganga would be hoping to get the nod when Spurs take on Wolfsberg in the Europa League on Thursday.
