Bayern crush Dortmund to retake B'liga top spot

The German champions have punished the midfielder for ignoring the Bundesliga's health measures amid the coronavirus pandemic

Corentin Tolisso has been fined and dropped by Bayern Munich for breaking Covid-19 rules to get a tattoo.

Tolisso was left out of Bayern's squad for the 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday following the incident.

Club officials were left incensed after the 26-year-old posted a video of him being tattooed on social media in clear breach of the health measures set out by the league to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has released an official statement condemning Tolisso's actions, which reads: "We are happy that despite the current situation Bundesliga matches can be played. A condition for that is that players, coaches and staff stick to the health rules set out.

"Corentin Tolisso has now broken these rules despite the fact that the club leadership has clearly communicated those rules with the team. This is frustrating and will not be tolerated."

Head coach Hansi Flick added after the win against Hoffenheim: "This is an absolute no go for us. He is very sorry, it happened, it cannot be undone."

Tolisso has since issued a public apology for flouting Covid-19 protocols, writing on Twitter: "I hereby want to apologise for my misconduct. I am sorry to have disobeyed the regulations of my club and the DFL. I know that I have disappointed our fans and FC Bayern Munich. I am sorry!"

The French midfielder had featured in 18 games in all competitions for Bayern so far this season, scoring twice, but it remains to be seen whether he will be recalled to Flick's first team on Friday.

The Bundesliga leaders, who stretched their lead at the top of the standings to seven points after their latest victory, will travel to Hertha Berlin at the end of the week as their title defence continues.

Bayern will then turn their attention to the FIFA Club World Cup, with the reigning European champions set to kick off their campaign in Qatar at the semi-final stage on February 8.

They face the winners of the match between African champions Al-Ahly and Qatari club Al-Duhail, while they could play newly crowned Copa Libertadores winners Palmeiras in the final.

The 26-year-old is set to continue his career in Greece following a short-term agreement

Ghana defender Abdul Rahman Baba has left Chelsea for Greek side PAOK, the English side have announced.

The 26-year-old joins the White-Blacks on a loan deal lasting until the end of the season.

He has been forced to look away from Stamford Bridge owing to being frozen out of the first team.

"Baba Rahman has today moved on loan to Greek side PAOK for the remainder of the campaign," Chelsea wrote in a publication on their official website.

"Having recovered from injury, the 26-year-old left-back has appeared on occasions for Chelsea’s development squad this season but now moves overseas for first-team football.

'His new loan club PAOK are known to Chelsea supporters for our games against them in the Europa League in 2018. They are currently fourth in the Greek Super League table."

PAOK are Baba's fourth club where he will spend time on loan since joining Chelsea in 2015, following periods with Schalke 04 in Germany, French side Reims and La Liga outfit Real Mallorca.

After a run of fine outings for Augsburg in the Bundesliga, the left-back transferred to the Blues, signing a five-year deal.

He made his first appearance for the London side in a Champions League fixture against Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv which ended in a 4-0 home triumph, and made his Premier League bow in a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

By the end of his first season in England, he made 15 league appearances for the Blues, starting in 11 of the games, a limited number of outings that would force him back to Germany to join Schalke on loan for the 2016-17 term.

His loan deal was truncated by a long-term injury sustained while playing for Ghana at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations but he returned to the Royals for a second loan stint after his injury comeback.

On his return, Baba, unlike previously, struggled for playing time at Veltins-Arena, resulting in the premature termination of the deal and a subsequent move to Reims in France for the second half of the season.

After a successful spell in Ligue 1, Baba joined Mallorca last season but saw disappointment once more as he sustained another long-term injury on his second league outing for the club, cutting short the loan.

After regaining fitness, he has had to train with Chelsea's U23s ahead of his anticipated move away.

Last November, he made a return to international duty with Ghana after two years out.

The Msimbazi giants confess they were not aware that the Belgian tactician was leaving them for another team until he resigned

Simba SC have come out to clarify they did have not have plans to part ways with coach Sven Vandenbroeck.

The Belgian tactician left the Msimbazi giants on January 6, just a day after guiding the team to the group stage of the Caf Champions League.

According to former Simba CEO Crestius Magori, the club was caught flat-footed over the coach’s decision to leave as they had no plans to part ways with him.

“Our club CEO [Barbara Gonzalez] was actually called by people from the place where Sven was staying and was told he was carrying everything up to shoes,” Magori revealed as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“We had no plans to part way with Sven [Vandenbroeck] but he himself decided to leave, it was shocking because it was people at the hotel, where he was leaving, who alerted CEO [Barbara] that he was leaving and had already carried all his belongings.

“We had just lost in the Mapinduzi Cup final and the team was preparing to return to Dar es Salaam when Barbara phoned Sven, and he told him he was not leaving and had no plans to leave.

“But when the team started the journey to Dar es Salaam, Sven approached Barbara and told her there were family problems he needed to solve back home [in Belgium] and he had to leave.”

Magori further says despite efforts by the club to convince him to stay, Vandenbroeck had already made up his mind.

“Even when he was told to bring his family to live in Tanzania and his kids to study in Tanzania, it is when Sven openly admitted he had an offer in Morocco, and that Morocco is near Belgium and will be easy for him to commute and see his family, and that is when we allowed him to go,” Magori continued.

The Wekundu wa Msimbazi have since hired Frenchman Didier Gomes Da Rosa on a two-year contract to replace Vandenbroeck, who later moved to sign for FAR Rabat of Morocco.

Da Rosa has already overseen one match as Simba beat Al-Hilal from Sudan 4-1 in the Simba Super Cup tournament and will also be in charge when they take on Tout Puissant Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the final match on Sunday.

The Red Devils legend singled the Portuguese playmaker out for criticism after the uninspiring 0-0 draw with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium

Bruno Fernandes' "disappointing" form against the traditional big six is "worrying" for Manchester United, according to Paul Scholes.

Fernandes has been a revelation at Old Trafford since making his way to Manchester from Sporting CP for €55 million (£49m/$67m) in January 2019. The 26-year-old has contributed 28 goals and 18 assists to United's cause in his first 53 appearances across all competitions.

However, Fernandes has now failed to score in his last six Premier League appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side with his latest blank coming against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The Portugal international was largely ineffective in the final third during the 0-0 draw, which leaves the Red Devils three points behind leaders Manchester City in the title race having played a game more.

Fernandes failed to light up stalemates against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool earlier this season, and also featured in the 1-0 home loss to Arsenal and the 6-1 reversal at the hands of Tottenham, with Scholes concerned that such a talismanic performer is failing to lift his game at the most crucial moments.

The United legend singled out the ex-Sporting star for criticism while playing down his old club's chances of winning English football's top prize following their failure to bounce back from a surprise defeat to Sheffield United.

"When you struggle against Sheffield United the other night and you get beat by them, and it comes to the big game, you have to win these games, and they just can’t find a way of doing it," Scholes told Premier League Productions.

"Bruno Fernandes has been disappointing in every single one of them. He’s had great numbers, great assists, great goals, I think in the last five games against big teams he’s had no goals, no assists.

"It’s really worrying, and that’s why United are where they’re at. I know they’re in a good position, it’s an alright position, but it’s not a position where you think this team will go on to win the league."

The treble winner added: "They've come to Arsenal, who aren't a great team, and they haven't won the big game. There is no desperation to win it either. I don't see them throwing bodies forward.

"Arsenal weren't a threat going forward, no Saka, no Aubameyang.

"United don't do enough to win these big games, they don't throw enough bodies forward and they don't have a desperation to win them and to go on to win the league."

'Disappointed' Newcastle star out injured until after World Cup

The Ivorian was brought in at significant expense, but mismanagement and tactical failings have prevented him from making a mark at the Emirates

No word better sums up the Arsenal career of Nicolas Pepe (to date) than ‘inconsistent’.

Whether evaluating his impact or his playing minutes, the distinct impression remains of something sporadic, intermittent – a bright light flickering, producing a sort of psychedelic effect and eliciting euphoria and rage in almost equal measure.

There was evidence of this mercurial nature against Manchester United in Saturday's 0-0 draw; on one hand, he was one of Arsenal's better players - creating three goalscoring opportunities for teammates - but he was also maddeningly wasteful with the ball, failing to hit the target with any of his four shots on goal.

Invariably, discussion around the Ivory Coast international is impossible without some kind of reference to his transfer fee.

When Arsenal forked over £72 million to sign him from Lille in the summer of 2019, they had to beat out competition from Napoli for the privilege. Considering the club’s precarious financial position, that outlay was ostensibly based on a belief they were signing a truly transformative talent.

Even then, it seemed a rather steep price. However, squint hard enough and you can just about see what Arsenal were going for.

In the 2018/19 season, Pepe had taken Ligue 1 by storm, emerging as a talisman for Lille as Les Dogues placed second in the French top flight. Along the way, the forward plundered 22 goals and assisted a further 11, staggering numbers that ignited interest all over Europe.

If he could even halfway replicate those numbers in his first Premier League season, it would go some way toward repaying the exorbitant fee.

In the end, he only managed eight goals and 10 assists across three competitions in 2019/20. Not poor by any stretch, but hardly enough to quicken the pulse, especially held up to the lens of his fee.

However, there was a positive denouement, as Pepe contributed assists for all three Pierre Emerick Aubameyang goals in the semi-final and final of the FA Cup and, in the process, earned the Gunners a spot in Europe.

That offered plenty of hope he would kick on in 2020/21, as it appeared he had finally begun to iron out the kinks in his game.

However, that expectation proved short-lived. Pepe’s start and goal against Southampton in midweek were only his fifth and third of the season respectively, and among other indignities, he has seen his favoured right-wing berth often taken up by the impressive 19-year-old Bukayo Saka.

For all that he can be frustrating to watch at times, there is no disputing the ability of the 25-year-old. So what exactly is to blame for his struggles in North London?

A slightly boring answer here, but to be honest there is more than enough blame on both sides. However, any objective analysis would lay a significant portion of the responsibility at the feet of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has earned praise for his 'non-negotiables' mantra, one founded on the premise that every player is on equal footing and so must be full-on 100 percent of the time. It is an admirable worldview, but it is not one which is rooted in reality: in the real world, players suffer crises of confidence, have fallow periods and occasionally need special privileges in order to produce their best.

For some, the carrot; for some, the stick. For others, a bit of both. However, for Pepe it has been all stick: he has found himself restricted to the bench more often than not, punished for being unable to build up decent rhythm by being denied chances to achieve said rhythm. This has fed into a vicious cycle that is difficult to understand, especially considering the latitude afforded a player like Willian, who arrived on a free from Chelsea last summer.

Ironically, it is the Brazilian, a six-year veteran of the Premier League, who has been granted repeated opportunities, despite – even by the admission of the club’s sporting director Edu – an unimpressive start to life in Arsenal colours. Pepe, who might have expected some patience on the back of the club’s significant investment in him, has seen precious little of it. It is, to put it kindly, counterintuitive management of assets.

That is not to suggest that Pepe is himself blameless, however. His performances when he does get picked range from anonymous to excellent, with too many of them toward the former end of the spectrum.

For all his skill with the ball at his feet, there are moments of infuriating awkwardness: treading on the ball, leaving it behind during runs and running down cul-de-sacs.

There is also his inability to form reliable relationships with his teammates on the pitch, as well a lack of tactical understanding in terms of his assigned role - this was evident again with his frustrating indivindualism against United on Saturday.

At other times, he just looks raw, and that cuts to the heart of some of the frustration around him: there are too many glaring holes in his game for a player who cost as much as he did.

There are some who contend it would be best to simply set aside the baggage of the cost of the transfer and instead judge Pepe objectively.

It is a fair sentiment, but impractical for one simple reason: the player himself seems constantly aware of the burden, and this is reflected in his play.

He constantly tries too hard on this account, and as a consequence lacks the sort of effortless assurance in his own ability that can sometimes make dribbling akin to a mind trick on opposing defenders.

Until recently, he seemed to exist in a sort of limbo. However, a pair of performances against Southampton, in the league and cup, appear to have breathed new life into his flagging Arsenal career.

While the Saints turned over the Gunners in the FA Cup, it was Arteta’s side who had the last laugh, winning 3-1 at St Mary’s on Wednesday night. Pepe, fielded on the left, scored for the first time in six matches to level the score after the home side had taken an early lead, and in general looked more switched on and involved.

It should see him keep his place for Saturday’s meeting with Manchester United, especially with Aubameyang once more unlikely to feature as he comes to grips with his family situation.

It was in this same meeting last season that he arguably first provided a glimpse of the ability that saw the club pay out a record fee. If Pepe can provide the same jolt of electricity on Saturday, it won’t matter that he came by this opportunity by default; he would well and truly give Arteta a choice to make.

Champions League preview & predictions - March 9 & 10

The Indomitable Lions will play either defending champions Morocco or Zambia in the last four

Cameroon survived an early scare by the Democratic Republic of Congo to win 2-1 in the African Nations Championship and qualify for their first-ever semi-final alongside Mali on Saturday night.

At the Japoma Stadium, Makabi Lilepo opened the scoring in favour of the Leopards before Yannick Ndjeng and Felix Tcheoude struck back to send the home fans into celebrations.

Despite the Indomitable Lions playing at home in front of their supporters, it was their opponents who started the game brightly, hoping to silence the home supporters.

The two-time champions were rewarded in the 20th minute when Lilepo rose highest to head home a corner kick.

However, that goal did little to stop determined Cameroon from pushing for goals. They upped their tempo, throwing everything they got on attack amid cheers from their fans.

Finally, the Central Africa nation managed to get an equalizer in the 28th minute. Goalkeeper Ley Matampi failed to clear the danger in his area, and the ball fell in the path of Ndjeng for an easy tap-in, much to the relief of their fans.

The winning goal came in the 41st minute when Tcheoude's strike took a wicked deflection before finding the back of the net.

Cameroon's Felix Oukine did well to get past his marker a minute to the break, but his effort hit the woodwork and bounced to safety.

The Indomitable Lions were even stronger after the pause as they targeted another goal.

But it was the Leopards who came closest in the 70th minute when Ernest Nsita picked out the unmarked Miche Mika in the danger zone, but the goalkeeper pulled off a brave save to deny him.

In another match played at the Ahmadou Ahidju Stadium in Yaounde, Mali stormed into the semis after defeating Congo 5-4 in penalties after the two teams settled for a goalless draw in regulation and extra time.

During the shootout, the Eagles converted all their penalties through Issaka Samake, Moussa Kyabou, Makan Samabali, Mamadou Doumba, and Mamadou Coulibaly.

The Red Devils missed one through Prince Mouandzu Mapata while Julfin Ondongo, Hardy Binguila, Yann Mokombo and goalkeeper Pavelh Ndzila converted theirs.

Cameroon will now play either Zambia or Morocco in the semis while Mali will be playing the winner between Rwanda and Guinea.

The Buccaneers made it three Soweto derby wins in a row after dismissing their traditional foes

Following Orlando Pirates’2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Twitter was set alight as it reacted to the result.

Thembinkosi Lorch, "the gift that keeps on giving", and Siphesihle Ndlovu scored in either half to hand Pirates victory while Daniel Cardoso was on target for Amakhosi in this Premier Soccer League encounter.

It was a third successive derby victory for the Buccaneers who also won both home and away legs of the MTN8 semi-final earlier this season.

The latest result has sparked a frenzied reaction from Twitter, including applause to ex-Chiefs winder Junior Khanye who correctly predicted that Pirates would score twice and Chiefs once.

'Revenge' game: Doc replay fired Arsenal to win

The Brewers left-back is happy to return to the team after suffering an injury during pre-season and missing their opening matches

Tusker defender Hillary Wandera has explained the pain of picking up an injury in pre-season which forced him to miss the start of the 2020-21 FKF Premier League campaign.

The left-back was forced to sit out a number of matches for the Brewers after he sustained an injury while preparing for the new season but he has now returned and clinched a regular starting role for the high-riding side.

Wandera has now admitted his happiness after integrating well into the team and has promised to work even harder to keep the position.

“It was not a good start to the season but I am thankful I have recovered well and I have started picking up,” Wandera said as quoted by the club’s official website.

“I thank the coach because he has given me the chance to be back in the team after injury and I can see myself picking up. I am not yet where I would want to be but I am working towards that.

“I know with time I will be back at the top and playing at my best.”

The 29-year-old also spoke of the tough competition in the left-back position, taking his time to laud Eric Ambunya, who played in the position while he was nursing the injury.

“Competition on the left side of the defence is very tough and every time you need to be at your best,” Wandera continued.

“If you look at how [Ambunya] has performed and also in training how hard Meja [Sammy] is working, then you know it’s not easy, but all this makes us better with each game.”

On Tusker’s next league fixture against Mathare United set for Sunday, Wandera said: “We are well prepared and worked hard in training this week, knowing we are going to face a very tough team.

“We have worked on the mistakes we have picked out from the previous game and rectified them and I believe if we step up a bit from the level we played in against Zoo, then we will be a very tough side and we will get the victory.”

The Brewers have enjoyed a good start to the season and are currently in the second position on the 18-team table with 20 points from nine matches.

Thomas Tuchel confirms Thiago Silva will miss Chelsea's clash with Atletico Madrid

The Brazilians are at home for a third successive match and now host the improved Chilli Boys

Mamelodi Sundowns have an opportunity to open a five-point gap at the top of the Premier Soccer League standings when they welcome Chippa United at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

After watching their closest rivals SuperSport United and Swallows FC drop points on Saturday, victory for Downs will extend their advantage at the top.

They will, however, would have played a game more than Matsatsantsa and the Dube Birds but still, breaking clear of their chasers is what would be on their mind on Sunday when they come up against an improved Chippa United outfit.

Although placed 13th on the table, the Port Elizabeth side have had a decent run under Dan Malesela, losing just once in their last five games he has been in charge as they try to move away from the relegation zone.

A win for the Chilli Boys would lift them up to ninth spot while they will remain on their current position in case of a draw of defeat.

The Brazilians will host Chippa United without suspended utility player Mothobi Mvala.

The midfielder-cum-defender was shown a red card in their 2-1 win away at Black Leopards last Wednesday.

With Mvala recently being converted into a centre-back due to the unavailability of Ricardo Nascimento, Brian Onyango, Rivaldo Coetzee and Bangaly Soumahoro, Downs have not updated if any of those defenders are back.

If none has returned from the "injury or illness" crisis the team is facing, Sundowns could immediately throw into the fray new signing Rushine De Reuck, whose arrival at Chloorkop was officially announced on Saturday.

Chippa United have not announced the medical or injury situation in their camp.

But coach Malesela would be hoping that his side's top performers like captain Chidi Kwem, fellow forward Bienvenu Eva Nga and defender Riaan Hanamub are available.

Match Preview

Sundowns will be playing their 15th PSL match of the season while it is game 14 for the Chilli Boys and both sides go into Sunday's contest on the backdrop of victories.

For Downs, they recovered from a three-game winless run following a 2-1 win away at Black Leopards last Wednesday.

That they are back on track might spur them on against the Chilli Boys whose last game was a 3-0 victory over Leopards the previous weekend.

Chippa have, however, proven that they are no push-overs in recent games, having managed to avoid defeat in four of their last five matches in which they have recorded two wins, as many draws and a loss.

That run includes two victories and a draw in their last three outings which would make them arrive at Loftus Versfeld in high spirits.

This translates to a significant improvement under Malesela, who took over the coaching reins late December 2020 on the backdrop of five successive winless matches consisting of four defeats and a draw.

But the former Orlando Pirates and Sundowns star has led them to a much-improved campaign, guiding them out of the relegation zone.

A tight Sundowns defence which has conceded just seven goals in 14 league games, the lowest in the campaign so far, will now be put to a stern test by a vastly improved Chippa attack which has scored seven goals in the last five games.

The last PSL match between these two sides saw Masandawana convincingly winning 3-0 at home in February 2020.

'Khalid Jamil magic on display' - Rejuvenated NorthEast United bring high-flying Mumbai City back to earth

Khalid has now managed to get the better of coaches like Owen Coyle, Antonio Habas and Sergio Lobera...

Sergio Lobera's Mumbai City have fallen just twice in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) so far and both the setbacks came against the unlikeliest of the oppositions - NorthEast United.

After the debacle in their season opener, the Islanders were on a 12-match unbeaten streak (nine wins and three draws) before facing NorthEast United on Saturday and thus, understandably the odds were in Mumbai's favour. But Khalid Jamil's side's performance came as a rude surprise for the high-flying Mumbai side.

The Highlanders went toe-to-toe against the league leaders right from the off and managed to do something which no other side in the league had managed to do against Mumbai before this match. They scored twice within 10 minutes and took the game away from Lobera's side.

Khalid Jamil's teams are generally not known for playing an attacking style of football and especially when his side aren't the favourites going into a tie. But this season, the Mumbai-based coach has emerged in a new 'avatar'. Since the former Aizawl FC coach took charge of this team from Gerard Nus, the team's outlook towards matches have completely changed.

Before Jamil took over, NorthEast had managed to win just two matches out of the 11 they had played and had drawn six games. Under Nus, the team often lacked creativity up front and were short of ideas more often than not. But the Indian head coach, since taking charge, has been a breath of fresh air.

Jamil has been consistently deploying both Federico Gallego and Luis Machado who are arguably the most creative players in this team. This is something that happened only twice in 11 matches under Nus.

Machado and Gallego together add the much-needed flair in the team's attack. Another player who has discovered himself since joining the club recently is Jamaican forward Deshorn Brown. The 30-year-old former Bengaluru FC player jumped ship during the January window and joined the Highlanders.

Brown has already scored three goals in as many matches and is a completely changed player from what he used to be while at Bengaluru. He looks confident in front of the goal and is exhibiting his poaching abilities inside the box.

The Highlanders were without a doubt the better of the two sides on the night but it wasn't just because of their attack. After taking the two-goal lead early in the match, they did equally well while defending their lead for the remainder of the game.

With Belgian defender Benjamin Lambot back in the starting XI, the backline looked watertight and not for even once they lost shape. In front of the backline, Khassa Camara and Lalengmawia also delivered a stellar performance. Camara was instrumental in disrupting Ahmed Jahouh and Hugo Boumous' moves down the middle and the young Indian midfielder supported him ably.

Sergio Lobera's side. as usual, had more of the ball throughout the game and played numerous passes among themselves. They did create chances in the second half as they overloaded the NorthEast half but committed defending from the Highlander meant Mumbai could only find a consolation through Adam le Fondre's innovative strike.

NorthEast must be credited for continuing to attack Mumbai even though they were under tremendous pressure.

Mumbai's dominance has been wavering ever since the East Bengal match last week and the result against NorthEast will come as a wake-up call for them. There is no scope for complacency in a league like the ISL and if Lobera wants to win his elusive league title, he must ensure this is just an anomaly.

I-League Round-Up: Real Kashmir hold Gokulam Kerala, Aizawl beat NEROCA FC

Aizawl FC climbed to the second spot in the I-League points table....

Real Kashmir 0-0 Gokulam Kerala

Real Kashmir FC were held to a goalless draw against Gokulam Kerala in the I-League 2020-21 clash at the Kalyani Stadium on Saturday. The Snow Leopards are now at the fifth spot with six points while Gokulam Kerala are fourth with seven.

Gokulam Kerala showed much intent in the initial minutes as they played attacking football in search of the opener. However, Real Kashmir defended well to keep the Malabarians at bay. In the 20th minute, a mistimed shot from Mayakannan fell for Philip Adjah inside the box, but he failed to find the net with just the opposition goalkeeper to beat.

Real Kashmir striker Lukman Adefemi was a lonely man in the front and could not make the most of the supply he received. Adefemi did have a clear chance to score in the 38th minute as he turned and sprinted inside the box with only the goalkeeper to beat. But he hit the ball wide off target.

In the second-half, the story of the match remained similar, as both teams failed to find the decisive pass in the final third. There weren't any clear chances to score as well. The Malabarians dominated the possession throughout the game but to no effect.

Aizawl beat NEROCA FC 2-1

Aizawl FC beat NEROCA FC 2-1 in the first match on Saturday at the Mohun Bagan Ground in Kolkata.

PC Laldinpuia (37) and MC Malsawmzuala (56) struck for Aizawl FC while Judah Emmanuel Garcia (49') scored the lone goal for NEROCA FC. By the virtue of the victory, the Mizoram-based side moved to the second spot on the table with seven points while NEROCA FC sit at the 10th spot with four.

NEROCA began the match with attacking intent and could have opened the scoring within three minutes. Khanngam Horam collected the pass from Jude Garcia in the second minute but his shot was blocked for a corner. Horam again came close to netting a goal from the corner but his header was off target.

Aizawl, however, created a number of opportunities for themselves. They tested the goalkeeper in the 15th minute when Malsawmtluanga’s header ended up straight at the gloves off Bishorjit Singh.

Aizawl were finally rewarded for their attacking endeavour in the 37th minute as an inswinging cross delivered by Malsawmtluanga was met by Laldinpuia, who sent his header past Bishorjit Singh in the NEROCA goal.

NEROCA, however, returned in the second-half with a positive intent and equalized through Judah Emmanuel Garcia in the 49th minute. Songpu Singsit turned past his man in the centre of the park and found Garcia in space and the Trinidad and Tobago striker took a couple of touches before sending a powerful strike to the back of the net.

Both teams started to play with attacking intent to find the winner. The third goal of the game, however, came in the 56th minute through a cross from the right flank inside the NEROCA box which saw Malsawmzuala head the loose ball into the empty net.

Aizawl, however, slowed the game in the injury time after two NEROCA FC players -- Akbar Khan and Kallon Varney Kiatamba -- were sent off.

Norwich 1-1 Crystal Palace: Player ratings as Zaha stunner earns Eagles point

The England international is the latest high-profile Premier League figure to be targeted by racists online

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has hit out at racist abuse he has received on social media.

United this week called for social media companies to improve their monitoring of abuse after “anonymous mindless idiots” abused Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial in the wake of team's 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United in midweek.

Meanwhile, Chelsea defender Reece James posted screenshots of abuse he received on Instagram, with the Blues subsequently releasing a statement condemning the attacks.

Rashford, 24, took to Twitter on Saturday after his side's 0-0 draw against Arsenal to denounce those who have targeted him.

"Humanity and social media at its worst. Yes I’m a black man and I live every day proud that I am. No one, or no one comment, is going to make me feel any different. So sorry if you were looking for a strong reaction, you’re just simply not going to get it here," he wrote.

"I’m not sharing screenshots. It would be irresponsible to do so and as you can imagine there’s nothing original in them. I have beautiful children of all colours following me and they don’t need to read it. Beautiful colours that should only be celebrated."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joined in the condemnation of racists online, saying at a press conference on Friday: "It's just incredible we have these scenes still, this abuse in 2021.

"We've been campaigning for a long time now with the Premier League and I think it's working, but there are still some people that haven't got it.

"They hide behind social media, are anonymous and it's unacceptable, it's disgusting.

"The players and everyone we've spoken to, each other, and they're fine, to put it that way. They're not Manchester United fans when this happens. We're all standing behind every single one of our players."

Ukraine ask to postpone WC playoff vs. Scotland

The Gunners boss says that the club may be busy in the coming days as deadline day looms

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has hinted that the club could still make some transfer deals before the January window closes.

While Martin Odegaard and Mat Ryan recently joined the north London side on loan from Real Madrid and Brighton, respectively, they have bid farewell to Mesut Ozil and Sokratis Papastathopoulos on free transfers. Meanwhile, William Saliba will spend the rest of the season at Nice and Sead Kolasinac returned to Schalke on loan.

There could be more comings and goings in the next couple of days, with Shkodran Mustafi rumoured to be a target for Liverpool and Ainsley Maitland-Niles possibly going out on loan.

Reiss Nelson also barely featured this season and it has been reported the club want to send him on loan to a team in the Championship.

Arteta confirmed on Saturday that the club's transfer business may not be over just yet as some players hope to move on in search of regular playing time.

"Well, there are some conversations at the moment going on," Arteta said at a press conference.

"I spoke with all of the players about their own situation because they are all aware of the minutes that they are playing and they want to improve their situation.

"I am willing to help them. Some of them the club is willing to help them and we will try to find a solution at the end. But I don’t know whether it’s going to be the case or not."

Arsenal extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven games on Saturday when they drew 0-0 at home against Manchester United.

The Spanish coach was pleased with his side's performance and feels they made some good chances.

"I thought it was a fair result," he said.

"It was a big battle, both teams wanted to win, and it was a really competitive match. They had some moments in the first half, and we had the biggest moments in the second half, but to make the difference you need to score when we had the big chances we had."

The Gunners are in action again on Tuesday when they face Wolves.

Solanke cancels out Ladapo double to salvage Bournemouth draw

The young talent hasn't lived up to expectations so far in west London but his new gaffer has ideas on how to get more out of him

New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is delighted to be working with Kai Havertz and has vowed to get the best out of a player he believes possesses “endless talent” by continuing to push the 21-year-old and helping him adapt to the physicality of the Premier League.

Havertz has struggled since joining Chelsea in a £70 million ($96m) transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer and is currently on an 11-game goal drought.

However, Tuchel's arrival saw the Germany international immediately improve with a bright performance in the 0-0 draw at home to Wolves and the head coach believes that Havertz will show more in the near future and perform better than he did under Frank Lampard.

“His potential is endless,” Tuchel told reporters. “It has been a challenge for him and I think he made a brave choice [coming to Chelsea].

“First I have to explain that I'm a huge fan of Bayer Leverkusen in terms of how they developed as a club for years, the players they develop and the quality of football they play. But you come from Leverkusen to Chelsea and the culture cannot be any more different.

“You go from a club that are okay to be second or third best, maybe reach the top four. It is a high level and they have all my respect, but you then go to a club which talk about trophies and winning titles so openly...

“It's like Bayern Munich - they demand titles, titles, titles every year. It does something to the club atmosphere.

“So Kai steps not only to a different country, club, team-mates, which is in itself complicated and a challenge, but he changes the club culture in a dramatic way. I love it because he is far out of his comfort zone.

“What I feel from him is that he is a very intelligent, friendly and open guy who has a lot of potential - and we will push him. He seems like the guy who needs to be pushed and we won't stop doing it.

“For him, this league is perfect because he cannot rest. He has so much potential that he needs to be challenged physically, so he doesn't just rely on his endless talent. This is good. In the end, the question is: does he show his teeth in the end when it gets tough?

“I was happy yesterday that it was him who got the almost decisive header in the box against all these towering, strong players from Wolverhampton. It would have been a nice moment at the end of the match.

“He doesn't hesitate and this is what I want to see from him. Then the rest will come, because this guy can be a huge, huge part of this club.”

Germany woes continue with loss to Poland

The Blues boss has a shorter deal than many managers who are appointed at his level but he has no concerns about the arrangement

Thomas Tuchel has explained why he accepted an 18-month contract at Chelsea after replacing Frank Lampard earlier in the week.

The club icon was sacked after five defeats in eight games, with the Blues slipping from top of the league to tenth place in the space of six weeks.

With talks beginning before Lampard's last game against Luton, an 18-month contract was offered to Tuchel with an option for an extra year.

Increasingly, Chelsea are offering shorter contracts to their head coaches, having paid huge compensations fees for sacking managers like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho in the past.

However, the Blues also have a reputation for being ruthless in the hiring and firing managers and Tuchel admits he was initially confused at the length of contract on offer.

“I want to be very honest with you, at first it was a concern, I was a little like 'oh, why 18 months?'” Tuchel told reporters. “And after one minute I thought 'what does it change?'

“What does it change? If they give me four-and-a-half years, they [could] sack me anyway. If they are not happy with me, they will sack me anyway. And if they gave me four-and-a-half years they would put in a clause that when they sack me, they'll pay me.

“So where can I be sure that I'll be there for four-and-a-half years? You cannot. That is the truth at this level. What is the role right now of the coaches? Are we in charge of the whole team and the transfers as well, or not, are we totally free in everything we do or not?

“Are we only responsible for bad results or also good results? What is this role and where do we find ourselves in that? So I decided not to worry too much, be brave enough to take on this adventure, because it was absolutely clear that I want to do it and I don't want to miss the chance.

“It's also my character to believe more in the chances than the risks. There is absolutely, for me personally, nothing to be afraid of. I'm very grateful to do this job at this level and I don't want to waste my time thinking about risks.”

Tuchel went on to explain the conversations that he had upon coming to west London with director Marina Granovskaia, who runs the club for billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

“She told me very clearly that when you sign for Chelsea you have to win trophies. Well, not that you have to win, but you have to compete for them,” he said.

“This club is about competing to win the most difficult competitions: the Premier League and Champions League. That's absolutely no secret.

“There are even managers who won titles and have been sacked. You have one sat in front of you - it happened to me around Christmas, winning some titles and being sacked.

“In the end, I think what everyone is looking for is a nice guy, a hard guy, a trophy-winning guy who is funny and good looking, but that does not exist. So, I hope I am that guy who can [bring the right] characteristics for an era and a certain period at this club.

“It already means a lot to me because I have had three of my best days ever as a manager coming here. I hope this continues for longer but the demands are high. I hope we can fulfil everyone's wishes because that means my wishes also come true.”

Arteta unsure when quarantined Aubameyang will return to Arsenal squad

The 31-year-old missed the 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and will likely miss the trip to Wolves on Tuesday

Mikel Arteta says he does not know when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be available for Arsenal after the striker had to go into isolation due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Gabon international missed the Gunners' home clash against Manchester United on Saturday, with the club announcing on Friday he would not be involved because of "personal family reasons".

Arteta confirmed the 31-year-old has been kept out of the squad because of Covid-19 protocol, suggesting he will miss the trip to Wolves on Tuesday.

"We have to follow the rules and the protocols right now and the protocols says that he cannot be involved at the moment," the coach told reporters after the 0-0 draw with United.

"We have to respect that and the doctor is managing the situation currently.

"It’s because he had a family issue that he had to attend to. And these are the consequences to that moment.

"I don't know [when he will be back]. We are working with the Premier League and government about it. He's been looking after his family and now he's in quarantine."

Emile Smith Rowe was fit to start for the north London side on Saturday, despite being forced off in the midweek win against Southampton after picking up an injury.

"I think he played a really good game. In the first half when got involved I think he made a real difference," Arteta said of the 20-year-old.

"I think he increases the pace and the rhythm of the team when he’s around the ball. And defensively I think he’s working so hard as well so overall again I think he had a really strong performance."

Arsenal remain unbeaten in their last seven Premier League matches and now sit eighth in the table, 13 points behind leaders Manchester City.

"We have so much to catch up [in the table] because of the run we had in the last few months," Arteta told BBC Sport.

"There is a lot of work to do but I like the direction the team is going in."

After the midweek match against Wolves, Arsenal will take on Aston Villa on February 6.
