The star players at St Mary's want the club to break their wage structure, amid interest from top-six sides in the Premier League

Danny Ings and Ryan Bertrand want to leave Southampton unless the club break their current wage structure to offer bumper new deals, Goal can confirm.

Both left-back Bertrand and striker Ings have interest from top-six Premier League clubs and are both keen to return to Champions League sides, having previously played for Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.

Southampton are unwilling to break their wage structure even for two key players, meaning the England international pair are likely to leave St Mary's either this month or in the summer.

Both Bertrand and Ings have emerged as essential first-team fixtures under Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary's, having had careers at top-six sides scuppered by lack of opportunities or injuries.

Bertrand, 31, played for Chelsea in the 2012 Champions League final - becoming the first ever player to make his competition debut in the showpiece game - as they beat Bayern Munich on penalties, and also won the FA Cup and Europa League with the Blues.

However, he never nailed down a regular starting role for the club, moving to Southampton in a permanent deal in 2015, where he has been a key figure ever since.

Bertrand's contract expires in the summer and he is delaying signing a new deal unless they offer a significant pay rise. That could make him a free agent at the end of the season, or Southampton could decide to cash in this month if no deal can be reached.

Despite his age, Bertrand's quality, experience and status as a home-grown player - he has 19 senior England caps - mean he has interest from clubs currently fighting for Champions League spots.

Ings, meanwhile, has impressed at Southampton since his permanent move to the club from Liverpool in 2019. The 28-year-old had a promising start to his time at Anfield scuppered by a knee ligament injury and he was eventually allowed to restart his career on the south coast.

In 2019-20, Ings enjoyed one of his most prolific seasons to date, netting 25 goals in all competitions and coming second in the Premier League Golden Boot, behind only Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.

Earlier this month, Ings scored his 50th Premier League goal with an early winner against former club Liverpool.

Ings has a deal at Southampton until 2022, but like Bertrand wants a big pay rise in order to extend his stay. He is also wanted by Champions League sides in England, having shown again the potential that led Liverpool to sign him from Burnley in 2015.

Manchester City field starting XI worth incredible £550m against Spurs

The Nigeria international is pleased with the Foxes’ defeat of the Blues, but claimed that his team still has more to learn

Wilfred Ndidi stated Leicester City still has ‘more to learn’ despite defeating Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday night.

First-half goals from the Nigeria international and James Maddison helped the Foxes secure their 12th win of the 2020-21 campaign.

Aside from that, the result saw them overtake Manchester United as league leaders after accruing 38 points from 19 games.

In his post-match assessment, the former Genk man spoke of his side’s confidence while hoping the King Power Stadium giants keep improving in subsequent matches.

“I’m very happy. In these games, we wanted to try as much as possible to get these points. I feel very good. I would say there are still more games to come,” Ndidi told LCFC TV.

“As a team, we want the points. We want to play and get the points. So, I just feel it’s one of these games that we really did good, but there’s still more to learn and hopefully better games coming our way.

“It’s very exciting and we feel very happy because it’s part of the season, and there are more games to come.

“At this time, we just build confidence for the next game, we don’t think about the end of the season.

“We know what we want to achieve, but it comes game after game. We try to focus on the next game.”

Ndidi’s goal against Frank Lampard’s men meant he found the net for the first time in 37 English elite division games. The last time he found the net was on September 29, 2019, when Leicester romped to a 5-0 win over Newcastle United.

The midfielder felt his goal came at the right moment after an early spell of pressure from the Stamford Bridge giants.

“If I count, [I’ve scored] maybe four or so, with my left foot!” Ndidi said when questioned about his effectiveness in front of goal,” he continued.

“It comes once in a while, but I just keep trying, you know! It was really good. It lifted the team.

“It’s something that when you get a goal at that time, you have the confidence to actually go for more.

“So, it was really good, and we stayed compact. As much as we wanted more, we still stayed compact."

After their fourth-round FA Cup clash against Brentford, Leicester return to top-flight action looking to continue their good form when they travel to Goodison Park for a date with Everton.

6 things we learned from West Ham's thrilling win at Newcastle

The Uruguayan striker has issued a passionate rallying cry ahead of the Red Devils' trip to Craven Cottage

Edinson Cavani has warned that Manchester United can't allow complacency to creep in against Fulham and says they must "fight" to hold on to their healthy position in the Premier League table.

United reached the top-flight summit post-New Year for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure back in 2013 when they beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor on January 12.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have bounced back from a slow start to the campaign to emerge as genuine title contenders, with the latest test of their credentials seeing them come up against Fulham on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils have picked up victories in nine of their last 12 fixtures, but suffered a small setback at the weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw by reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield.

The 13-time Premier League winners will be expected to get back to winning ways at Craven Cottage and move back into first place ahead of Leicester City, who have played one game more after beating Chelsea 2-0 on Tuesday.

However, Cavani is expecting another tough examination against a Fulham side fighting for survival and says he and his team-mates cannot afford to let their standards slip after all their hard work over the past few months.

"I believe that one of the most important things that we need to be aware of, whenever we go into any game, is that we are Manchester United, and, irrespective of whether we are top of the league or in any other position, every other team that plays against Manchester United try to do their absolute best to try and beat them," the Uruguayan forward told United's official website.

"It was also a similar situation for me when I was at PSG. Teams try to do the impossible to get a victory against one of the most legendary and best teams in the world.

"So ensuring we are focused and concentrated on this, should give us the energy to want to fight for this badge.

"And, right now, that we are top of the league, to also want to fight to stay right where we are. For all that, we need to be ready and mentally prepared to compete.

"Like I always say, the important thing isn’t just winning a couple of games, it’s having that consistency of always competing; competing in every game and for every ball, and concentrating to the absolute maximum for every situation that comes up in the game.

"And that’s what, in the end, allows you to achieve your ultimate goal."

Cavani added: "As I was saying before, Fulham will know very well that they have Manchester United coming up next, and they’ll be going all out to try and beat us, like they have done in the past and just like what we’ve seen with other teams like Burnley, who always give their utmost.

"So we need to be aware that it’s going to be a tough game and that we have to be 100 per cent focused, in order to take care of all the details so we can try to win the game in order to remain in the league position that we currently occupy."

When asked to assess his contribution to United's attack, Cavani responded: "The work starts from the pressing and closing down you do in attack, in order to try to prevent the ball from getting too close to our own area and creating dangerous situations near our goal.

"I think it’s a job that the whole team does together as a unit, and I also believe that it’s something we need to do even more of, in order to be able to keep competing hard until the end of the season."

How Xabi Alonso is reimagining Bayer Leverkusen

The out of favour winger will join Jamshedpur for the rest of the season...

Seiminlen Doungel is set to join Jamshedpur FC on a loan deal from FC Goa, Goal can confirm.

The India international has made seven appearances in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) and has 229 minutes under his belt.

He started the first two matches of the season against Bengaluru and Mumbai City FC respectively but soon went down the pecking order. In some games he was being used sporadically from the bench and co-incidentally he last took the field in December 2020, against the Men of Steel.

He was part of Northeast United FC in the inaugural edition of ISL, where he made nine appearances. After brief stints in Delhi Dynamos and Bengaluru FC, he rejoined the Highlanders.

He went on to become the club’s first-ever hat-trick scorer when he netted thrice in a 3-1 win against Chennaiyin FC in 2017-18.

His next club was Kerala Blasters where he spent a season before joining FC Goa under Sergio Lobera. He was one of the undisputed starters for the Gaurs and made 14 appearances in 2019-20 and contributed with a goal and an assist. In 71 matches in ISL, Len has eight goals and six assists to his name.

Jamshedpur are currently going through a lean patch of form with three back-to-back losses. They are eighth on the table with 13 points from 12 games and will next face Hyderabad FC on Sunday evening.

Madrid being axed from UCL 'illogical' - Zidane

The 39-year-old tactician indicated the Buccaneers need to make the most of their home-ground advantage

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids is confident the Soweto giants can bounce back to winning ways when they face Lamontville Golden Arrows on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers suffered their second defeat in their last four matches in the PSL when they lost 2-0 to Black Leopards in Thohoyandou over the weekend.

Josef Zinnbauer's side will get a chance to redeem themselves when they take on an unpredictable Arrows side at the Mecca of South African football, Orlando Stadium.

Zinnbauer's assistant, Davids says it is time for Bucs players to step up their performances and show that Pirates are a big team.

What's been said

"The good thing after such a bad result and a bad performance is that we have the next game in three days time," Davids told Pirates TV on Wednesday morning.

"Really for us, we immediately focus on getting back on our performance levels in terms of what we know we can do.

"We are at Orlando Stadium. We are Pirates and we are a big team.

"It is time for the players to stand up and show what we can really do in this home match against Golden Arrows."

Why does it matter & what's the bigger picture?

PSL title hopefuls Pirates will reduce the gap between them and the log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns to six points with a win over Arrows.  Bucs will be banking on their good record against Abafana Bes'thende as they are undefeated against the KZN side in their last seven competitive games.  A victory for Pirates will also see them leapfrog Arrows into fourth place on the log and open a four-point gap between them and their archrivals Kaizer Chiefs.  The Buccaneers are hoping to become the first team to defeat Arrows this season with Abafana Bes'thende having registered four wins and six draws.

ISL: Bengaluru FC appoint Simon Grayson as the new head coach ahead of 2022/23 season

The Red Devils legend has addressed speculation linking the in-form midfielder with a move to Old Trafford

Bryan Robson has expressed his admiration towards Jack Grealish, while admitting that he "wouldn't mind" seeing the "terrific" Aston Villa star in a Manchester United shirt.

Grealish was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford after a stellar 2019-20 campaign at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old almost single-handedly kept Villa in the Premier League, with one of his eight Premier League goals coming in a crucial final-day draw against West Ham.

He has managed to take his game to even greater heights in the first half of Villa's latest campaign, inspiring the team's unlikely bid for a European spot.

Grealish has contributed five goals and seven assists in his first 15 outings for Dean Smith's men this term, earning a regular spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad in the process.

United ultimately passed up the chance to bring in the playmaker last summer, but they continue to be linked with his services and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer singled him out for praise before a home fixture with Villa in December.

"He’s a player for Aston Villa and England who has only improved. I don’t want to say too much about other teams’ players but of course, he’s a player we know we have to look for," said the Norwegian boss.

Robson thinks Grealish has reached a new level since being trusted with the captain's armband at Villa, and has admitted that he would welcome the prospect of the playmaker completing a move to Manchester in the near future.

"It was a good decision giving him [Jack Grealish] the [Aston Villa] captaincy. I think it's made him a bit more mature," said the United legend.

"He's a powerful player. He's quite a strong boy and he's quick and the way he can sort of go either way past people he's always going to be a danger and that's why he gets so many free kicks.

"Him and Villa have been terrific this season. He's been linked with us but those decisions, thank goodness, are with Ole and the board of directors.

"I wouldn't mind seeing Jack Grealish in a Manchester United shirt. But I don't know whether the staff at Old Trafford fancy him, as much as you'd like to see him playing for your club."

Grealish will be back in contention for a place in Smith's line-up when Villa take in a midweek trip to Manchester City, while the Red Devils will also be in action on Wednesday as they come up against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

‘It is coming home’ – FKF golden trophy to arrive in two weeks – Mwendwa

The federation boss reveals to Goal an update on the golden trophy which will be competed for by teams in the 2020-21 season

Football Kenya Federation has confirmed the eagerly awaited golden trophy for the 2020-21 season will arrive in the country in the next two weeks.

According to FKF President Nick Mwendwa, the 24-carat gold trophy is already complete, and they are now planning on shipping it to the country.

“We will have the trophy in Kenya in the next two weeks,” Mwendwa told Goal on Wednesday. “I don’t have the specific date but all I know is the trophy will be here soon, just give it two weeks.”

Mwendwa has further confirmed they will have a big ceremony to welcome the trophy when it lands in Kenya.

“It will be a big occasion,” Mwendwa continued. “I can assure you we are working on having a big ceremony when it arrives in the country.”

In a recent interview, Mwendwa confirmed to Goal where the trophy will be kept after arriving in the country.

“We have already booked KCB Bank and that is where we will keep it [the trophy], it will be round in shape, very good for everyone’s eyes, these are some of the changes we promised after taking over the league.

“We don’t have time to waste now, we were given the mandate to run football and that is what we are doing now, we don’t have time to fight, our work is for the job we are asked to do by Kenyans and it is the reason we want to have everything in place to avoid inconveniences when the season ends.”

In the last two seasons when the top-flight was under Kenyan Premier League (KPL), winners Gor Mahia never received a trophy and prize money after title sponsors SportPesa walked away.

The Kenyan league is currently going on and has reached the round of eight matches with KCB still topping the 18-team league table on 18 points from seven matches while Tusker are second on 17 points from eight outings.

Gor Mahia, who have only played five matches owing to their involvement in the Caf Champions League, are sitting 13th on the table with nine points while rivals AFC Leopards are fifth on 12 points from six matches.

'Bale is not producing for Mourinho' - Tottenham may have to send Welshman back to Real Madrid, says Berbatov

The former Lilywhites striker has been disappointed by the experienced winger's form since his return to north London

Gareth Bale is "not producing" for Jose Mourinho, according to Dimitar Berbatov, who says Tottenham may have to send the Welshman back to Real Madrid.

Bale has struggled for regular minutes and full fitness since returning to Tottenham on a season-long loan from Madrid in September.

The experienced winger's first spell at Spurs came to an end when he joined the Blancos for a then-world record fee of £85 million ($116m) in 2013, and he went on to score over 100 goals at Santiago Bernabeu while also earning two Liga winners' medals and four Champions League titles.

However, the 31-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by Zinedine Zidane ahead of the 2020-21 campaign, having been left out of his starting XI for most of the previous season.

Tottenham supporters hoped Bale would rediscover his best form in familiar surroundings, but he has only managed to score three goals in 12 appearances under Mourinho with most of those outings coming from the substitute's bench.

Berbatov initially felt the Wales international was the ideal man to complete a fearsome attacking triumvirate at his old club, but he admits that his former team-mate has ultimately been unable to stamp his mark on the current squad over the past few months.

The former Spurs striker told Stats Perform News: “I was expecting a lot of him coming to Spurs, to shake things up and for him, Son and Kane to make it a trio up front that can rival the Liverpool attacking trio, for example.

“For the moment it is 100 per cent not working. Hopefully he can get back to 100 per cent and start playing. If not, in the end, it is an easy decision – he can go back to Madrid.

“Whatever the reason [for his lack of games], Gareth Bale is injury-free now because he's on the bench for the team, but he's not playing from the first minute so it means that obviously he's not producing the right level of football Jose Mourinho wants from him, which is a shame because I like him a lot.”

Bale will hope to return to the fold when Mourinho's side take in a trip to Wycombe in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday, before their focus shifts back to the Premier League and a meeting with reigning champions Liverpool three days later.

Yanga SC deny reports they have released Sarpong and Carlinhos

The Jangwani giants have come out to rubbish reports claiming they have released two of their foreign players

Yanga SC have come out to dismiss reports they have released two of their players Michael Sarpong and Carlos Carlinhos.

The two players have not enjoyed a good start with the Jangwani giants after they signed for the team at the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

While Sarpong arrived from Rwanda, Carlinhos joined from Angola but they have all struggled to impress with Carlinhos the most affected as he missed a number of matches in the first round of the Mainland Premier League due to injury.

Carlinhos was recently named in Yanga’s squad for the Mapinduzi Cup and despite travelling with the team to Arusha, he was later asked to return to Dar es Salaam, with the club stating he had been given time off to rest his injury.

The club’s acting secretary Haji Mfikirwa has now come out to clarify that the two players are still part of the team and that they had not released anyone, explaining Sarpong had been allowed to visit his native Ghana for family issues.

“He has been allowed to go and see his family just like the way all players in the team have done,” Mfikirwa is quoted saying by Daily News. “He is still our legal player and the coach has got plans with him throughout the season.

On Carlinhos, Mfikirwa said: “Carlinhos is still our player contrary to what people are saying that he has been shown the exit door at the club.

“He is progressing well with medication as he has been ill for a long period and everything between him and the club is perfect such that soon, he will resume his normal duties at the club.”

Mfikirwa further waded into the rumours going around that the club’s CEO Senzo Mazingiza has also been fired by stating: “Senzo is still with us and for those who wish to see him leaving the club should know that he is here to stay until all the works which brought him at Yanga are successfully accomplished.

“All these are being said to simply disorganise us. Yanga members and fans should not pay attention to such unfounded claims since whenever we have something to communicate with them; we do so by using our official media outlets.”

Mfikirwa has further confirmed new signing Fiston Abdoul Razak signed a short-term six-month contract which has room for extension.

Yanga fans have questioned the move to hand the striker a short period at the club insisting the player deserved more than two years owing to his past record with teams he has turned out for.

“The most important thing for people to know is that we have signed Abdoul Razak and he is going to serve our team for six months, which has got an option of extension upon agreement from the two sides,” Mfikirwa continued.

“His contract has got many things of which I cannot disclose here but we will be updating people as time goes bearing in mind that contract details are always confidential.”

Apart from Razak, Yanga, who are currently topping the 18-team league table with 44 points from 18 matches, also signed defender Dickson Job from Mtibwa Sugar.

Barca's Bartomeu faces vote of no confidence

Having played in only four games for the Glamour Boys' over the past two seasons, Ngcobo has become an integral part of the team under Gavin Hunt

Kaizer Chiefs marksman Samir Nurkovic has spoken glowingly about one of the club's rising young talents, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

Nurkovic was commenting after Amakhosi's 3-0 league win against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The goals were scored by Ngcobo in the first half and substitutes Happy Mashiane and Lebogang Manyama in the second stanza.

For the first goal, Nurkovic latched onto a throw-in from the right before guiding the ball across the edge of the TTM box into the direction of Ngcobo, who did superbly to lift the ball over a defender's head before volleying past goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

It was a second goal in two matches for Ngcobo after he scored against Cape Town City on the weekend. It was his third overall in a season in which he has played 16 matches in all competitions and has firmly established himself in the heart of the Amakhosi engine room.

"It was a nice run from the little star," Nurkovic told SuperSport TV after the game, in reference to the 21-year-old Ngcobo's goal against TTM.

"The little star is the future of Kaizer Chiefs. I saw him and I just flicked it on, and after that he did the rest. Amazing what he did there."

Nurkovic has made a huge impact since returning from long-term injury this month, scoring one goal and creating two assists in his last three outings, while also offering a physical presence as the target man.

“After three tough months for me of surgery and recovery, I’m really happy to be on the field again and to help the boys as much as possible,” the Serbian said.

“I’m trying to help as much as possible the team to victories. Obviously, I’m upfront to score goals and to assist goals and to help them."

The Glamour Boys’ recent run of good form - three wins in three matches, has lifted them from just above the relegation zone to seventh on the table, ahead of Wednesday’s Premier Soccer League fixtures.

Chiefs are next in action on Saturday, away in the Cape against Stellenbosch FC.

Transfer Talk: Ronaldo to MLS as Beckham's Miami plot winter move

The ex-coaches believe the Amavubi stars played very well against the Cranes and can easily upset the North African giants

Rwanda have received backing to beat Morocco when the two sides clash in their second Group C match on Friday.

The Amavubi will face the North African giants at Stade de la Reunification in Douala at 18:00 knowing very well that defeat will put the team in a precarious position of dropping out of the competition.

Rwanda kicked off their campaign with a 0-0 draw against East African neighbours Uganda while Morocco beat debutants Togo 1-0 to take control of the group.

However, former Rwanda national team coaches Eric Nshimiyimana and Jean Baptiste Kayiranga believe with the kind of game the Amavubi displayed against the Cranes, they have a good chance of hauling maximum points against Morocco.

“I think the team did well against the Cranes and were a bit unlucky not to get all three points,” Nshimiyimana said as quoted by New Times.

“If they display the same compactness and defend in numbers then they have the ability to score to win the match if Tuyisenge gets good supply.

“I strongly believe football is often unpredictable, for instance, we have won many games against big teams in the past so they have the ability to defeat Morocco and Togo.”

On his part, Kayiranga has also echoed Nshimiyimana's sentiments by stating: “It was a great effort from the boys. It was a collective display from the whole team, moving forward and defending as a unit.”

Ahead of the second game, Rwanda coach Vincent Mashami has called on his players to forget about the result they picked against Uganda and focus on the match.

“We tried our best but it wasn’t enough, so now we have to focus on the next game against Morocco, which we have to win,” Mashami said as quoted by New Times. “I have asked the players to show the same spirit and be ruthless if we are to have a chance of winning.”

On the overall display of his team against Uganda, Mashami said: “I believe we still need to do better at creating chances, the chances we did create were the ones that came through a level of buildup play and moving the ball effectively.

“We showed good movement both on the ball and off it in the first and second half, and it’s going to be interesting to sit down and re-watch the game and dissect it.”

Rwanda will face Morocco in the first match of the group on Friday before Uganda come up against Togo.

Premier League preview & predictions: Gameweek 19 (part two)

There’s been a decrease in game time for the Algeria star since the Manchester Derby, prompting fresh questions over the wideman’s current role

On Sunday, as goal after goal went in for Manchester City against Crystal Palace to take Pep Guardiola’s men above Liverpool for the first time this season and indeed since the start of the previous campaign, Riyad Mahrez cut a neglected figure on the City bench.

Pep’s three substitutions against Palace saw Phil Foden replace Bernardo Silva on the hour, Ilkay Gundogan was withdrawn for Ferran Torres and Joao Cancelo replacing the irrepressible Kevin De Bruyne 10 minutes later.

The upshot of those changes for Mahrez means he’s now failed to come off the bench in three of City’s last six games, seeing only 89 minutes of action from a possible 540.

This situation, strangely, feels like deja vu. There’s a sense we’ve been here before with the Algeria star; questioning how he fits into Guardiola’s plans and whether the Spaniard rates the two-time Premier League winner as a prominent figure in his plans.

Doubts initially arose in the title run-in of 2018/19, although he did finish that campaign strongly—which continued at a successful Africa Cup of Nations, eventually won by Algeria. The wide attacker carried that achievement into last season and was one of the positives for the Cityzens in an otherwise wretched campaign domestically and in the Champions League.

Still, Mahrez didn’t have things all his way and was dropped for some important games post-lockdown.

Again, doubts arose.

After testing positive for coronavirus just before this season commenced, he bounced back to become one of Pep’s trusted players and thrived at the initial stages of the current run of positive results.

He, like many of his teammates, struggled in the opening months, with a deep dive into the North African’s numbers emphasising an alarming decline.

However, the winger’s showing in the dismantling of Burnley on November 28 and the side’s general showing at Porto a few days later and dominant 2-0 win over Fulham prompted suggestions of a City renaissance.

While there have been bumps in the road, notably a drab goalless encounter vs Manchester United and a 1-1 stalemate at home to a poor West Bromwich Albion side, Guardiola’s side have recovered spectacularly to win their last five in the Premier League, scoring 11 and conceding one—a late Callum Hudson-Odoi consolation strike at Stamford Bridge.

Mahrez had featured and thrived in those authoritative displays vs Burnley and Fulham, but the Algerian’s recent lack of chances can be traced to an underwhelming showing at Old Trafford, where he missed arguably City’s biggest chance to edge ahead against their local rivals.

Guardiola has leaned on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo in the attacking wide positions since, with even Torres seeing 168 minutes to Mahrez’s 89. The England and Portugal internationals, by contrast, have had 368 and 420 minutes, respectively.

Bernardo hasn’t had a goal contribution in that time, but his all-round game and work rate make him valuable. He leads for pressures per game in the City side, with Foden — who’s started his fair share of games since the United draw — coming in at second.

While the England youngster had a tough run in the autumn where he had minutes harder to come by, he and Bernardo have featured more prominently in the last five wins to significantly reduce Mahrez’s time on the pitch.

On the Algerian’s first start since underwhelming in the derby, he was mostly involved in the best bits of the Cityzens’ attacking play in that 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. He fashioned out three shooting opportunities — a game-high along with KDB — completed the highest volume of passes into the penalty area and only the Belgium superstar beat him for successful progressive passes against the Seagulls.

Even though the ex-Leicester City man failed to convert a really good chance in the second half (prompting a shake of the head from Pep), he was somewhat unlucky not to register an assist after setting up Gundogan at almost point-blank range or opening up the pitch for KDB with a flicked layoff that created a decent chance for the team’s talisman.

Be that as it may, it feels as if Mahrez’s form isn’t to blame for the recent paucity of minutes, rather the form of others around him as well as the greater balance they bring to the side.

The North African (4.19) sits behind only De Bruyne (6.33) for shot-creating actions per 90, with Silva and Foden trailing with 3.52 and 2.82 respectively.

As well as being more creative than the Portuguese and Englishman, Man City’s expected goals per 90 is higher whenever Mahrez features.

However, they concede more chances per 90 when the Afcon 2019 winner is in the side, somewhat validating the notion there’s currently a greater balance when the former Leicester star is out of the side.

City’s xG against per 90 is 0.96 with the Algerian in the side, higher than Torres (0.91), Foden (0.88), Sterling (0.85), KDB (0.81) and Bernardo (0.58).

Besides, while Pep’s team win 2.00 points per match when KDB, Sterling and Mahrez play, that average rises to 2.18 when Silva features and 2.08 when Foden is in the side.

The latter pair’s recent involvement is, by and large, affecting the 29-year-old winger’s minutes, and their tendency to press while offering the side considerable stability may explain Guardiola’s recent omission of the experienced North African.

Mahrez has tended to force his way back into the reckoning throughout his time at City, and there’s no reason to believe the Algerian won’t make himself valuable to the side again, starting with Wednesday’s encounter with Aston Villa.

Chan 2021 Wrap: Guinea open with huge win, defeated Namibia take lessons

Syli National got goals in either half to ensure they picked not only a win but also a clean sheet in Limbe

Guinea opened their African Nations Championship campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Namibia on Tuesday in Limbe.

Horoya AC forward Yakhouba Barry earned a brace in the opener while the other goal for the Syli National was scored by Morlaye Sylla to give the West Africans complete control of Group D.

A sloppy back pass by Immanuel Heita to his goalkeeper Edward Maova is what gave Barry a chance to open the scoring in the 13th minute. Just before the break, Barry’s Horoya AC’s teammate Sylla extended the lead with a curled effort.

Barry earned his second in the 86th minute when his feeble strike found the back of the net to make it 3-0 for his side.

Guinea looked a stronger side especially in the opening moments of the game and the result was an opener that came from a weak back pass by the Namibians.

Moussa Camara ensured the Southern Africans would not get an equaliser in the middle of the first half when he reacted quickly and stopped Elmo Kambindu’s effort with a timely dive. Camara was called to action again when he tipped over the bar a 30-yard free-kick from Ambrosius Amseb.

Guinea’s coach Mohamed Kanfory Bangoura explained the need of seriousness in every encounter.

“I am very delighted with the 3-0 win in our first match. We must treat every game with a lot of seriousness because every team that is here is strong,” Kanfory said as was quoted by Caf Online. “Although we beat Namibia, we did not underrate them from the start, but only selected a team that reacted well to win the game."

On his part, Namibia's Richard Bobby Samaria said they have picked their lessons from the loss.

“We take lessons from this defeat to Guinea,” Samaria said. “We conceded two goals because of some silly mistakes. There are no excuses here, but we lost to a well-prepared team of Guinea.

“We now need to go back to the drawing board to plan for our next game against Tanzania.”

In the first match of Group D, Tanzania were defeated 2-0 by Zambia.

Tambwe: Yanga SC signing Abdoul Razak will be an instant hit

The former striker is confident the new signing will help the Jangwani giants achieve their targets for the season

Ex-Yanga SC striker Amissi Tambwe has tipped new signing Fiston Abdoul Razak to make an instant impact for the club.

The Burundian striker was unveiled by the Jangwani on deadline day, just hours after the team arrived home from Arusha in Zanzibar, where they beat their rivals Simba SC 4-3 on penalties to lift Mapinduzi Cup on Wednesday.

The signing of the striker, who has also featured for several clubs across Africa among them Sofapaka, Razak also featured for JS Kabylie, LLB Académic, Rayon Sports, CSMD Diables Noirs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic, C.D. Primeiro de Agosto, and Al-Zawra'a SC. He has caught the eye of Tambwe, who now says he will help them achieve their targets set for the 2020-21 campaign.

“Yanga snatched the best transfer target during the mini window since the arrival of Fiston will help the club score a lot of goals as they were lacking someone who can do it in the first round of the season,” Tambwe, who also played for rivals Simba in the Mainland league, said as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“From the way I know him I know, he will do a lot of great things that will give success to Yanga bosses as well as fans.

“It's a matter of waiting for the way he will work and be able to respond to the new system of his team that he is going play with but in terms of finding the back of the net, he knows that much better and he will help the squad.”

Abdoul Razak joined Yanga from Egyptian club ENPPI becoming the second signing during the mini window after they had signed defender Dickson Job from Mtibwa Sugar.

Yanga have already claimed the new signings will help the team to clinch the Mainland Premier League and domestic Cup titles in this campaign.

According to Hersi Said, who is one of the leaders of the Yanga registration committee, the two players will add a much-needed boost, and there is nothing that will stop them from winning the league title and FA Cup.

“We will deal with everyone who comes before us, no one will be safe, we have done our best additions and are ready to continue from where we left, our target is to win the league and FA Cup,” Said was quoted as saying by Sokalabongo.

“We signed a striker who will come to add value to Yanga’s attacking line-up, Fiston is coming to put sugar in the cake, he is what we have been missing and soon you will see his contribution to the team’s targets.”

Yanga are currently topping the 18-team table on 44 points from 18 matches.

Chan 2021: Rwanda must be ruthless against Morocco – Mashami

The Amavubi tactician remains confident of getting a win in their second match against the North Africans after their opening draw

Rwanda coach Vincent Mashami has called on his players to forget about the result they picked against Uganda in their opener of the African Nations Championship and focus on their next match against Morocco.

The Amavubi battled to a 0-0 draw against their East African neighbours Uganda in their opening match of Group C played at 18 at Stade de la Reunification in Douala on Monday.

Mashami has, however, termed the result as ‘positive’ considering they have always struggled to beat the Cranes but has now shifted his focus to the next match against Morocco, who beat debutants Togo 1-0 in their opener to take control of the group.

The two East African nations were meeting in the competition for the first time, but despite the many chances created, none managed to get the ball in the back of the net.

In the sixth minute, Rwanda had the first chance when the defenders let loose APR forward Jacques Tuyisenge just outside the 18-yard area but the skipper took a shot which did not trouble keeper Charles Lukwago.

In an earlier interview, Uganda coach Johnathan Mckinstry blamed the team’s stalemate against Rwanda on the nerves among his players.

“The first half of the game was really quite frustrating I think the players and for the staff alike. The display was below the level I know. We can play better than we did,” Mckinstry told Goal after the match. “One of the things we deployed at half time is they have to play football, they have to pass the ball.

“I felt maybe it was through a little bit of nervousness you know for a lot of players it was their first time at this level and you know…yes it was an East African derby but it is a new level for them, Chan is a step up just in terms of pressure and so I feel some of the players felt that pressure and they were not willing to play those punchy passes especially into our attacking midfielders.”

Rwanda will face Morocco in the first match of the group on Friday before Uganda come up against Togo.

Boost for Harimau Malaya after receiving approval for quarantine-based centralised training

It will be a positive start to 2021 for the Malaysia national team after they received a special approval to conduct centralised training.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) revealed that they have successfully got the approval from the relevant authorities for Tan Cheng Hoe to be able to conduct a training camp, the first since last 2019.

After going an entire year without having the chance to gather the players together, with matches and training camps being continually postponed because of the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, this latest news will undoubtedly provide a big boost to Cheng Hoe and co.

Initial plans to hold a training camp in January were squashed when the Malaysian government announced the return of the Movement Control Order (MCO) because of the spike coronavirus cases but FAM did not relent and eventually managed to persuade the authorities with the appropriate plans.

FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin was particularly thankful to the efforts put in by Youth and Spors Minister Dato’ Sri Reezal Merican Naina Merican who played a huge role in helping to secure the approval.

"Massive appreciation to Dato' Sri Reezal who is always attentive to the needs of the national team and he has done a lot to ensure that we can get back to training to prepare the team for the qualifiers in March. With  a quarantine-style centralised training, we can make proper planning in getting the approval from MSN (National Sports Council) in terms of facilities before setting the date.

"There are a lot to consider especially with the M-League club releasing their players before the big league kick-off at the end of February and we will need to assess everything before making further announcements," said Hamidin in a statement

The latest news was obviously well-received by the head coach of the national team with Cheng Hoe already working with his team of officials to ensure that the right procedures are put in place to ensure maximum health and safety priorities are put in place for the training camp.

"Of course this is good news for us and we have to quickly iron out all the details in terms of the training program because we are aware of the high number of Covid-19 cases in the country and we must make sure that nothing happens to our players and officials. To get this opportunity gives us the chance to prepare the team ahead of the matches in March," said Cheng Hoe.

National team captain, Johor Darul Ta'zim's Aidil Zafuan also echoed the joy in seeing this latest development as he knows that the team does not have too much time on their hands if they are to catch back up to the other challengers in the group who have not suffered as long a break as Malaysia did.

"It's a positive news for the players to be able to return back to training after more than a year of not being able to get together and we must make full use of this allowance. We've seen the other teams in the group getting to train earlier and if we do not get the go ahead ourselves, for sure we will lack behind the others.

"This is the news that us players have been waiting for and for sure it is vital that we are able to train together again," said Aidil.

Orlando Pirates vs Golden Arrows Preview: Kick-off time, TV channel, squad news

The Buccaneers are back at home after two matches in Limpopo where they experienced mixed fortunes

Orlando Pirates will be looking to bounce back from last Sunday's Premier Soccer League setback in Venda when they host Golden Arrows at Orlando  Stadium on Wednesday.

Fresh from a shocking 2-0 loss to Black Leopards at Thohoyandou Stadium, their biggest and second defeat of the season, the defeat came after dismissing another Limpopo side Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 3-0 at the same venue four days earlier.

But they lost a bit of ground in their title bid after succumbing to Leopards and would be keen to get back on track.

It was a second defeat in five league games for Pirates after also losing 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in their first match of 2021.

Now placed fifth on the log and nine points behind leaders Sundowns, they have an opportunity to cover ground by beating Arrows.

But it could prove to be a tricky affair as they come up against Abafana Bes'thende who are one level above them and yet to taste defeat this season.

Squads & Team News

It is not yet clear if Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer will play defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza whose availability is uncertain after he lasted just 42 minutes before being forced out with an injury during the defeat by Leopards.

Nyauza was already an injury worry going into this match after he was also injured in the 3-0 win over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila seven days ago.

The centre-back's availability will be good news for Zinnabauer as the Soweto giants would be eager to be tight at the back.

If he fails to recover, Happy Jele or Innocence Maela could step in. Forwards Zakhele Lepasa and Tshegofatso Mabasa, as well as defender Abel Mabaso, are still out with long-term injuries.

No injury or illness setback has so far been confirmed from the Arrows camp.

Going into this match with a clean bill of health would be a huge plus for coach Mandla Ncikazi.

Match Preview

This is a match between sides that still have chances of winning the league title although Arrows have been rarely mentioned in that breath.

Victory for Pirates will get them back to fourth position on the standings and will come six points behind Sundowns.

If second-placed Swallows FC beat Chippa United on the same day, they assume the lead with eight points more than the Buccaneers.

A win for Arrows will see them unmoved from fourth spot where they are currently sitting but will remain close to the leading pack.

Abafana Bes'thende are one of only three teams yet to taste defeat this season.

They have four victories and six draws in this campaign under Ncikazi who has surprisingly guided them to a commendable run.

With striker Knox Mutizwa struggling to reproduce the form that saw him being their top performer last season, midfielder Velemseni Ndwandwe has been their best attacker with four goals in 11 league games.

Another midfielder Nduduzo Sibiya has managed three strikes in seven appearances.

That makes Arrows boast better attacking stats than Pirates whose top scorers are Frank Mhango, Mabasa, Vincent Pule and Fortune Makaringe who share two goals each.

The last meeting between Pirates and Arrows ended 0-0 at Sugar Ray Zulu in March 2020.

But the Soweto giants could draw confidence from the fact that they last lost to Arrows in 2017 when they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat away in Durban.

Also, Pirates have been dominant over the KwaZulu-Natal side with 17 wins in the teams' 30 league meetings.

Five matches have been in favour of Arrows while eight have ended in draws.

Lippert: I don't know Ghana's football identity

German coach Bernard Lippert believes he will need more time to make an impact in his role as Ghana's technical director.

The 58-year-old assumed duty last October, filling up the role vacated by Francis Oti Akenteng.

He has been charged to formulate guidelines, strategies and policies for the training and the technical development of coaches of Ghana football, provide advice to the [Ghana Football Association] Executive Council on coaching and technical development matters in general and supervise national football team coaches.

"There is always very fast expectations of the technical director but the job is not done in three months or one year. First of all, you have to do an assessment to see where we are. It’s not easy because you must first find the identity of football in Ghana," Lippert told Asempa FM.

"It is difficult to identify because most of the players go to Europe and they play football completely different from what we play. We are going to discover the identity and once that is done we will make some changes for sure.

"I told you before that I have to make an assessment first and find out an identity because I don't know the identity of your country. When I find out, I will see but for sure, we need some changes.

"We can't keep playing like this but the identity will not come in the next three months or the next year."

Before taking up the Ghana job, Lippert worked in Azerbaijan since 2008, combining his duties as technical director with coaching spells in charge of the nation's U19 and U21 teams.

“I’m not happy with the U17 performance; we have goalscoring problems. We don’t have the kind of strikers who are real strikers but in all the referee decided this match today. Sorry to say this,” Lippert recently said on Ghana's first-round elimination from the 2021 Wafu Zone B U17 Cup of Nations in Togo.

“This was really obvious and there are a lot of things to do. This team didn’t present itself as a team but we still have four or five prospects in the team.

“We have to discuss the performance of the team at the Executive Committee level."

Lippert also previously worked with German Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt
