Crystal Palace boss Hodgson reveals why Zaha and Kouyate missed Manchester City defeat

The Ivory Coast and Senegal internationals did not feature as the Eagles suffered their eighth league loss of the season at the Etihad Stadium

Cheikhou Kouyate and Wilfried Zaha did not recover in time from their respective injuries to face Manchester City on Sunday, according to Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

The African stars picked up injuries after playing the entire duration of the Eagles’ goalless draw against Arsenal on Thursday at the Emirates Stadium.

The setback made them unavailable for Sunday’s trip to the Etihad Stadium as Crystal Palace suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s men.

Kouyate and Zaha joined Schlupp on the treatment table as the Ghana international continues his recovery from a hamstring injury while Anglo-Nigerian Eberechi Eze and Ghana striker Jordan Ayew played from start to finish at Manchester.

“Wilf, unfortunately, picked up a knock in the game against Arsenal,” Hodgson was quoted by the club website. “The turnaround has been quite quick, and we haven’t been able to turn him around in time.”

“Every time Wilf doesn’t play it’s a miss, that’s been well documented. We’d have loved to have him here – and we’d have loved to have had Cheikhou [Kouyate] here – but these things happen in a game of football and we’re fortunate that with a couple of days between the games we haven’t picked up more injuries than the one Wilf picked up.”

Zaha is Crystal Palace's leading top scorer with eight goals and two assists after 16 Premier League appearances this season.

Kouyate, meanwhile, has been an ever-present in Hodgson’s team since the start of the 2020-21 season. He has featured in all but one of their league matches so far.

They will be expected to be available when Crystal Palace host West Ham United at Selhurst Park for their next Premier League fixture on January 26.

Van Dijk absence is having a 'psychological' effect on Liverpool and Thiago is slowing their game down, says Barnes

The former Anfield favourite doesn't think the Reds have been themselves since losing such a key player to long-term injury

Virgil van Dijk's absence is having a "psychological" effect on Liverpool and summer signing Thiago Alcantara is slowing their game down, according to John Barnes.

Liverpool have made a stuttering start to the defence of their first league title in three decades, recording nine wins, seven draws and two losses in their opening 18 games.

Jurgen Klopp's men have already dropped more points than they did in the entire 2019-20 campaign, with their latest setback coming against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Red Devils maintained top spot in the table after holding the champions to a 0-0 draw at Anfield, and might have even escaped with all three points had Alisson not been at his best to deny Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the latter stages of the game.

Liverpool have now gone three successive games without finding the back of the net for the first time in 16 years, while they continue to deal with a defensive injury crisis which has seen several key players sidelined.

Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have also been unavailable for the Reds, leaving Klopp with no choice but to deploy midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the heart of the defence in recent matches.

Van Dijk has left the most gaping hole in the starting XI, with the talismanic centre-back having been out of action since October with a cruciate knee ligament injury, and Barnes doesn't think his old club are the same formidable force without the 29-year-old.

“When you’re so used to playing a particular style with a particular way with three hard-working midfield players, you’ve got Van Dijk at the back who gives you that assurance, which allows the full-backs to go forward with conviction and be creative," the Liverpool legend told talkSPORT. “All of a sudden, the psychological effects of Van Dijk not being there affects the whole team.

“So it doesn’t necessarily physically affect the team in terms of what they do, but if you look at Trent Alexander-Arnold, for example, or even Andy Robertson, when Van Dijk is there they know they can go forward with conviction knowing that they’re safe at the back.

“I don’t think they’re being as creative.”

Barnes also believes the presence of Thiago, who moved to Anfield from Bayern Munich in September, has disrupted the Reds' usual system with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino now struggling to find space in the final third because the Spaniard holds onto the ball for too long.

“Thiago, who was running the game and was the best player in the first-half, I don’t think that necessarily helped the front three," he added. “With Henderson and Fabinho in midfield, they just get the ball forward and are much more direct for the three strong-running strikers to get on the ball and go on attack, Thiago slows the game down.

“When he slowed the game down in tight areas, that is not Mane’s game, that is not Salah’s game. So we’re getting used to a new system, but at the moment it’s not working.

“In my opinion, along with Man City, we’re still favourites [for the title].”

Omoto among three Kariobangi Sharks players who will miss AFC Leopards date in FKF Premier League

The Slum Boys suffered their first defeat in the league outing against Tusker last weekend

Kariobangi Sharks will be without up to three players against AFC Leopards in their next FKF Premier League game.

The 2017/18 FKF Shield Champions lost their first match in their current campaign last weekend against Tusker FC, while Ingwe dented KCB's unbeaten start to the season. The Slum Boys would have wished to have all their key players available for their next assignment but that would not be the case.

"Patillah Omoto suffered an abductor sprain," Kariobangi Sharks confirmed on Monday through their social media outlets.

"The midfield general is expected to resume training in a week's time."

Sudanese defender Kuol Chuol and his compatriot Fredrick Alushula have also been ruled out of the crucial game.

"Kuol Chol suffered an ankle sprain against Tusker FC. More assessment to be done from the specialists.

"Fredrick Alushula suffered a medial collateral ligament strain and will be sidelined for three weeks."

The William Muluya-led team dropped from the second position on the table to third after a 4-2 loss to the Brewers on Saturday.

Henry Meja and Brian Marita scored a brace each for the Brewers while Erick Kapaito replied with a brace as well for the Slum Boys.

"We were punished for the mistakes we committed in dangerous positions," Muluya told Goal.

"Out of the four goals scored, two were from the set-pieces owing to the fouls we committed. It was individual mistakes and it is like we gifted them the lead; so we had to work even harder for a comeback."

The 11-time league champions had to play with 10 men for the better part of the second half after a red card to Rogers Aloro. However, Muluya insists it was not an advantage for his team, as others may have felt.

"I always prefer playing 11 vs 11 because when your opponent is a man less, it is not easy as others may perceive," he continued.

"When Tusker were reduced to 10 players, they knew they had to double their efforts. It was like a psychological boost for them. They even went ahead to score and finished on a high and eventually, they won the game.

"The loss is a wake-up call for us, we have to go back to the drawing board, work harder and amend the mistakes we made with the hope of bouncing back to winning ways in our next game."

Maguire lauds Manchester United ‘depth’ after star showing from Lindelof justifies Bailly rotation

The Red Devils captain was delighted with the defensive showing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as they held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield

Harry Maguire has lauded the “depth” in Manchester United’s squad, with Victor Lindelof slotting seamlessly into their defensive unit after Eric Bailly was rotated for the trip to Liverpool.

The Ivory Coast international centre-half has been the go-to option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer alongside his club captain in most recent fixtures.

A big selection call to bring in Lindelof was rewarded with an impressive clean sheet on Merseyside, with United rarely troubled by one of the most fearsome attacking units in world football.

There have been plenty of calls for Solskjaer to bolster his back line, but Maguire believes those already at Old Trafford are showing that they are up to the task.

He told MUTV after helping to shut out Liverpool: “It was a big defensive display. Not just from the defenders and the goalkeeper, it was the midfielders, the forwards. They covered us and we looked solid. We didn't give them a big chance. It was a great defensive display.

“Victor has come back to the team in a big game with huge pressure and performed excellently. Credit to Vic, it shows the depth we've got at centre-half now with Eric, who has been playing and doing really well.

“It's important, whoever plays, in the back four, knows the team, knows their responsibilities and keep keeping clean sheets as that gives us the best chance of going on to win the games.”

The stalemate on Merseyside has stretched United’s unbeaten run away from home to 16 matches, with that sequence stretching back over a year.

Maguire is encouraged by the progress being made under Solskjaer’s guidance and is hoping for more joy on the road when the Red Devils head to Fulham on Wednesday.

The England international added: “We wanted to win the game today but we didn’t, but we keep the momentum going of not losing, especially away from home.

“It's going to be a tough game [on Wednesday]. I've watched their recent games, Fulham, and they've got some great attacking players and they play nice football, so we know it's going to be tough.

“Every game in the Premier League is tough but we need to go there with the right mentality to go and win the game. We need to make sure we prepare, recover, get back on the training pitch and make sure we improve. As a group of players, we need to improve to be where we want to be.”

At Ejisu Community Park, Kumasi Sports Academy forced Ampem Darkoa Ladies to a 1-1 draw in a Northern region fixture.

In Tamale, Pearlpia Ladies played out a 1-1 draw with Fabulous Ladies in the Northern region encounter at the Utrecht Academy Park.

Agnes Aduako's effort gave the visitors the shock lead in their opening day fixture but Bassira Alhassan's strike helped Pearlpia avoid suffering a losing start in their new campaign at home.

Konlan Fiindib Cynthia won the Player of the Match award thanks to her impressive showing in Pearlpia Ladies' rescue from defeat.

Meanwhile, two other fixtures - Police Ladies and Thunder Queens and Soccer Intellectual and Sea Lions Ladies FC were postponed to Wednesday, according to the Ghana Football Association.

In a statement on its website, the GFA attributed the unfortunate developments to the delayed receipt of Covid-19 results from the participating clubs.

‘Pogba key to Man Utd’s slim title chances’ – Neville calls for three-month ‘cameo’ from £89m star

The Red Devils legend admits that a World Cup winner is going to need to become a talisman at Old Trafford in order for a crown to be claimed

A two or three-month “cameo” from Paul Pogba is now integral to Manchester United’s title chances, says Gary Neville, with the former Red Devils defender claiming there is a “slim” chance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side claiming the crown.

The men from Old Trafford continue to sit at the top of the Premier League table.

A 0-0 draw with defending champions Liverpool has allowed a standing at the summit to be maintained, but an uninspiring showing at Anfield has raised as many questions as it delivered answers.

With the playing field levelling out in 2020-21, there are now just five points separating the top six.

Manchester City, who have moved into second, appear to be the team with momentum behind them, as others struggle to find a spark, and Neville admits supposed superstars – including an £89 million ($121m) World Cup winner – need to step up for United.

The Red Devils legend told Sky Sports after witnessing a goalless stalemate on Merseyside: “I think Manchester United's chances of winning this league are slim - Liverpool and Man City are still the best two teams in this league.

“But the slim chance they have to win this league will depend on something like Paul Pogba delivering a cameo of two or three months of brilliance, which he is capable of.

“He's got confidence, he's got arrogance - good arrogance, in a sense that he believes in himself. He thinks he should be playing in the biggest games in the world, and winning titles, and thinking positive thoughts, thinking you're the best is a big thing when you're looking to win.

“Just in that last 20 minutes, I felt United just had that little bit of missing belief. It's not a long way away, but that's the bit that will stop them winning the title.

“I thought it was tough for him on Sunday. I've seen it over the years, where Sir Alex Ferguson had to put Wayne Rooney or Danny Welbeck out on that right-hand side, and it's not easy when you don't play there, to play there. It's easier to come off the left onto your right and slip inside, but it's not natural for them on that right wing, so I thought he was given a tough gig on Sunday in terms of his natural position.

“If you asked Paul Pogba: you can play any position in midfield or any up front, that's the one he wouldn't pick, right of midfield. I didn't criticise his performance at Anfield because I thought it was a tough gig - the same with Marcus Rashford, who prefers to play on the left - but I do think he can have a big influence on United.”

Pogba could have made a decisive impact against Liverpool, allowing United to edge clear of the chasing pack, but he squandered the Red Devils’ best opportunity and the points were shared between two arch-rivals.

'Champions League qualification is most important' - Klopp plays down back-to-back titles at Liverpool after Man Utd draw

The Reds head coach says he is putting a European place ahead of a successful defence of the Premier League trophy

Champions League qualification is "the most important thing" for Liverpool, insists Jurgen Klopp, who claims he is not obsessed with delivering back-to-back titles.

Liverpool stormed to their first domestic crown in 30 years last season, finishing 18 points clear of second-placed Manchester City after securing the trophy with a record-breaking seven games to spare.

Unfortunately, Klopp's side have not been able to match those levels of consistency in the first half of the 2020-21 campaign, slipping to fourth in the Premier League standings after 18 fixtures.

The Reds were setting the pace again until surprise draws against West Brom and Newcastle halted their momentum, and a 1-0 loss at Southampton raised even more question marks over their ability to successfully defend the title.

The champions extended their recent winless run to four games after playing out a 0-0 stalemate with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, with a lack of cutting edge in the final third once again undermining their build-up play.

Klopp must now prepare his players for another crucial home fixture against Burnley on Thursday, which they can ill-afford to lose with United, Manchester City and Leicester City enjoying superior spells of form above them.

However, the German head coach is adamant that Liverpool's main goal is to finish in the Champions League places, as he told reporters following the draw against the Red Devils: "For me, it's not important where we are in the moment - it's important that we have points and we are around this group [top four].

"For that you need points. We are in the middle of a bunch of teams which fight for this spot and that's what we have to do. It's not about if we don't become champions, it's not fun anymore. We just fight for everything and I saw that tonight again.

"The most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League and I know how difficult it is. This season it will be a tough race for the top four."

During an interview with Sky Sports, Klopp added on the Reds' struggles for goals: "There is no easy explanation [for their recent lack of goals]. You always miss chances. You have to keep going and try to ignore the talk around it. Everyone wants to see goals. You cannot force it.

“These moments happen. You have moments where you can't explain why you score from all angles. Against Crystal Palace everything ended up in the net. It's a bit annoying in between these moments."

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Bartlett underlines expectations at TS Galaxy

The 48-year-old, Bafana Bafana's second highest goalscorer, has a wealth of football experience both in South Africa and in Europe

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Shaun Bartlett is looking forward to a new challenge after being given the job of Owen da Gama’s right-hand man at Premier Soccer League newcomers TS Galaxy.

Da Gama himself has only been with the club since last week - he took over from interim coach Zipho Dlangalala, following the departure of Dan Malesela last month.

Da Gama’s first match in charge resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Dan Malesela’s Chippa United side on Saturday, a result which has left the Rockets at the foot of the PSL table.

Bartlett is however upbeat about joining Galaxy, who won the Nedbank Cup in 2019 by beating Kaizer Chiefs, while still playing in the second-tier of South African soccer.

“I’m delighted and excited about the opportunity given to me by owner Tim Sukazi and TS Galaxy football club," he said.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge – even though it's a new club in the PSL I know there is great expectation and there is a lot of goals to achieve and I want to be part of that process.

“And along with the technical team and head coach Owen da Gama, we are hoping to achieve that in the very near future.

“I’m very excited about working with coach Owen again and hopefully we will start getting the results and make the fans proud of the club that it is, and even the brand of football that we will be playing – ensuring getting results and competing for silverware.”

Former Bafana Bafana, Cape Town Spurs, FC Zurich (Switzerland), Charlton Athletic (England), Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs marksman Bartlett worked alongside Ernst Middendorp as Amakhosi’s assistant coach. He also had a stint in charge of AmaTuks, and earned promotion with Golden Arrows from the First Division to the top-flight in 2015.

Da Gama is looking forward to reuniting with Bartlett, having worked together previously.

"I recommended Shaun because I've worked with him in the past,” Da Gama said, as per a statement from the club.

“I coached him at Bloemfontein Celtic when he came back from overseas. I also worked with him as an assistant in the Under-23s.

“I know his talent and his commitment to the game. Most importantly I admire his work ethic. I know almost all his characteristics. We have to work very hard now. He understands the South African game very well.”

Inter have proved Scudetto credentials by beating Juventus, claims Vidal

Antonio Conte believes the champions still have an edge on the rest of Serie A, but his midfielder thinks the Milan club are true contenders

Inter proved they have what it takes to maintain a serious title challenge this season by defeating reigning champions Juventus 2-0, according to Arturo Vidal.

Vidal opened the scoring against his former club at San Siro on Sunday, heading home a cross from Nicolo Barella to find the net in Serie A for the first time since his goal clinched the Scudetto for Juve in May 2015.

He became the first ex-Juve player to score for Inter in the Derby d'Italia since Christian Vieri in 2004 and the eighth player to score for both sides in the fixture.

Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku missed opportunities to add to Inter's tally but Barella made no mistake with an emphatic finish in the 52nd minute.

The Nerazzurri consequently claimed their first league win against Juve since September 2016 and their first with a clean sheet since April 2010.

Antonio Conte's side moved level with Serie A leaders Milan on 40 points and opened up a seven-point advantage over the reigning champions.

Milan can restore their three-point cushion by beating Cagliari in their game in hand on Inter on Monday, but Vidal does not think Conte's men are going to fall away.

"It's important for me and for the team. It was a very difficult game against the best team in Italy," Vidal told Sky Sport Italia.  "I am glad to have scored my first goal for Inter, very happy. I think we proved that we are up to the task of fighting for the Scudetto.

"This gives us the confidence to keep pushing, to believe we can win the Scudetto, as we beat the strongest team over the past nine years. We believe that we can go all the way."

Ahead of kick-off, Vidal was seen kissing the Juve badge on Giorgio Chiellini's training top while the pair shared a hug. He then celebrated his goal in a muted fashion.

Conte led Juve to three straight Serie A titles to start their ongoing period of dominance and finally got his first league victory over them at the fourth attempt.

Despite Inter coming out on top and Juve being seven points adrift, Conte still believes the Bianconeri are the team to beat in the race for the title.

"In order to beat a team like Juventus, which for all the Italian clubs are the reference point, we have to put in a great performance. We did that," said Conte.

"We prepared well and it's satisfying to see that we were right about the things we thought could hurt Juventus. The lads followed the plan perfectly and I am very happy for them because these are games that must give you self-belief, let you understand you are on the right path.

"We already saw the fruits of this process last season and we are continuing to see them this term. Juventus were an important reference point, a side that dominated Serie A for nine years, having done exceptional work both on the field and as a club.

"I still maintain Juve have a gap not just from Inter, but all the other clubs, but we are working to close the gap."

In what appeared to be a dig at his club, Conte added: "If people think we are the favourites now, imagine if we'd been able to work in the transfer market in August. We'd be massive favourites!"

Barcelona boss Koeman 'can understand what Messi did' after star's red card in Supercopa loss to Athletic Club

The Blaugrana manager reflected on the forward's dismissal and his club's defeat in Sunday's final

Ronald Koeman empathised with Lionel Messi's frustration after the superstar captain was sent off in Barcelona's Supercopa de Espana final loss against Athletic Club.

Messi saw red for the first time in his illustrious club career as embattled La Liga giants Barca were upstaged 3-2 by Athletic after extra time in Seville on Sunday.

After Athletic star Inaki Williams struck in the third minute of extra time, Messi swung at Asier Villalibre in an off-the-ball incident that was spotted by VAR and referee Jesus Gil Manzano brandished a red card.

Messi – who has been tipped to leave Camp Nou amid links with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain – is facing a lengthy suspension, but Barca head coach Koeman defended the 33-year-old.

"I can understand what Messi did," Koeman said afterwards. "I don't know how many times they fouled him, and it's normal to react when they keep trying to foul you as a player who is looking to dribble with the ball, but I need to see it again properly."

Messi, who was fouled eight times against Athletic, recovered from a minor injury to return to Barcelona's line-up in his 753rd appearance for the Catalan club.

"Leo, after so many years in the elite of football, knows perfectly if he is in condition or not," Koeman said. "We spoke before, he said he was in condition to play the game, he has given his maximum and nothing else."

Antoine Griezmann scored twice for Barca, including the 40th-minute opener, but his goals were cancelled out on both occasions at Estadio de La Cartuja.

Athletic's Oscar de Marcos equalised in the 42nd minute before substitute team-mate Villalibre forced extra time at the death, after Griezmann had restored Barca's lead with 13 minutes remaining.

Williams stepped up with a sublime goal as Barca – third in La Liga and seven points adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid – missed out on their first title under Koeman, who replaced Quique Setien ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

"We are sad, disappointed by the result," Koeman added. "We played the final to win and not to lose that, yes, but there is no time to get off. We'll be playing soon, there's a cup and a league, there's no time for regrets.

"We have done positive things, we have improved. We have failed in the goals received. We have to be more forceful in defence. We must defend better in the area and not let the opponents think, they cannot control, turn and shoot easily. We can improve.

"My work, I give the maximum I can. My work is not very good if we had won, nor very bad for losing. We are on the way, there are positive things, although losing today is very hard."

Who is Bruno Saltor? Things to know about the Chelsea interim manager

Kedah's star striker Tchetche Kipre has admitted that he needs to catch up to his teammates' current fitness level, following his late arrival.

Kedah Darul Aman star striker Tchetche Kipre has admitted that he needs to catch up to his teammates' current fitness level, following his late arrival to the club's 2021 pre-season training.

The Ivorian had only arrived back in Malaysia late last week, when the team had already undergone weeks of pre-season.

"Although I had undertaken light training back in my hometown, it definitely wasn't enough for me to keep fit. The team had gone through three weeks of intensive training while I'm still behind.

"I need to figure this out in order to train twice as hard so I will be at the right fitness level by the the time of the Sumbangsih Cup (Kedah vs Johor Darul Ta'zim) on February 26," said the 33-year old forward in an interview produced by the club.

At the start of last season's Malaysia Super League, Kipre had experienced a slow, unconvincing start and only managed to score one goal in four appearances. But when the league resumed five months later following the Covid-19 lockdown, he banged in six more goals in seven appearances.

Despite this, he still looks forward to playing and entertaining the fans in the cup match, which will pit last season's league champions against the runners up, and also doubles up as this season's first league match.

"The first match of the season is crucial for confidence. I want to prepare well because it will be a tough match against a formidable JDT side.

"We are also a good side and I believe everyone will be waiting for the clash, and they will be entertained by it," noted the former Terengganu FC man.

Although the the current situation concerning Malaysia's domestic football is uncertain due to the ever-rising number of new Covid-19 cases in the country, the league organiser last week stated that they are still retaining the January 26 season kick-off date.

'Leipzig will not be the last step for Nagelsmann' - Kampl backs boss for 'great career'

The former Taifa Stars defender explains that they know the Chipolopolo coach well and will tame his style of play

Tanzania have claimed they know how to handle Zambia coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic's style of play when the two sides clash in the African Nations Championship on Tuesday.

The Taifa Stars are in Group D of the competition being held in Cameroon and will play Chipolopolo in their opening fixture at Limbe Omnisport Stadium.

The team’s manager Nadir Haroub, who was nicknamed ‘Cannavaro’, during his playing time for the national team, has now said they have studied videos of Zambia playing and understand the best way to deal with coach ‘Micho’, whom he described as a master of East African football.

“I know coach ‘Micho’ very well, he coached me already and he is one kind of a coach who likes to pack his midfield, he uses the midfield to possess play, he is a good coach and he has experience mostly in East Africa where he has coached a lot, he understands everything around,” Haroub told Azam TV in Limbe.

“He is a coach who uses the midfield to get results, but I know we also have a good coach, he has been studying videos of how Zambia play and we will try our best to contain him, we will try as much as we can to stop his style, we know it will be possible.”

On how Tanzania are prepared for the opener, Haroub said: “We have planned ourselves well, we have prepared well, we are ready, and it is now upon our coach to pick his best starting 11 for the opener.

“Our coach watched Zambia against Cameroon [during the friendly] and we are also checking videos on Zambia to see how we can get ready; I know the video will help us very well.

“We want to know their mistakes so that we can be able to handle them, Zambia are a big team, they have great players, and even in my last appearance in this tournament in 2009, we were knocked out by Zambia after a 1-1 draw.

“What I know is it is a huge task, it will not be easy against them, but we are prepared to get a good start in the competition.”

Haroub who featured for Tanzania during the same competition in 2009, has also revealed how he has been inspiring the players heading into the tournament.

“I have told the players these is business, they are in business when playing football, the players need to know they have to perform well because all the scouts are here, it is easy to be spotted and end up to play in Europe and I have told the players to seize the chance and play good football,” Haroub continued.

“In 2009, most players I played with in this tournament are currently turning out for big clubs in Europe, so it is a great opportunity for our players to strive to do their best, I have told them what is at stake, I have told them it can change their careers for good and I hope it will inspire them to do well.”

The other fixture in Group D will see Guinea face Namibia on Tuesday.

Status Report: African stars in the Spanish Reto Iberdrola

The Northern Irish coach is aiming to end the East Africans’ miserable record at the tournament

Johnny McKinstry has revealed to Goal that Uganda are aiming for a deep run in the 2021 African Nations Championship as the Cranes prepare for their tournament opener against Rwanda on Monday.

Speaking on the eve of their Group C East African derby, McKinstry has outlined his desire to end Uganda’s miserable track record of underperformance at the tournament for home-based players and go the distance in Cameroon.

“In terms of our ambitions for the tournament, this is Uganda’s fifth time in a row at the Chan,” he told Goal, “but to date, the national team has not progressed past the group stages.

“Now we consider this something of an anomaly. Why is that?

“There have been various reasons for that down the years, but this year, looking at ourselves and the group of players we have, there’s a confidence within the group that we can really go and do something.”

Uganda qualified after dispatching Somalia 7-2 on aggregate and then ousting Burundi 6-0 to advance via the Central Eastern Zone qualifiers, which took place between July and October 2019.

“The mantra we’ve adopted within the group is ‘why not us?’” McKinstry continued. “Why can it not be us that go deep into this tournament?”

The former Sierra Leone coach has, however, acknowledged the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on his side’s tournament planning.

“We’ve had solid preparations, [although] obviously the Covid-19 pandemic has made things difficult for all teams around the world,” he continued. “Usually, you’re preparing for these tournaments and you take in a whole range of activities in terms of the team-building activities etc.

“For this, it really has been hotel, dining, training, team meetings. We’ve had to limit ourselves because movement and interaction with people outside the group has been off-limits, so we’ve done what we feel has been best for the group in terms of preparing them in line with those regulations.

“We’ve had a good camaraderie within the group, there’s really good energy, the majority of our key players are fully fit and we go in confident that we can do something.”

Uganda have impressed during their tournament warm-up games, but must be wary of a group that contains reigning champions Morocco, debutants Togo, and East African rivals Rwanda.

“We’ve had some good warm-up games,” the coach added. “We’ve played three since we arrived; a draw with the hosts Cameroon, having played 77 minutes with 10 men, then victories over both Zambia and Niger.

“The players are in a good space both mentally and physically, and we’re looking forward to the kick-off against Rwanda.”

Uganda and Rwanda meet in Douala on Monday, before the Cranes meet Togo and Morocco in their second and third fixtures respectively.

“We believe we have the talent and energy to go deep into the tournament,” he concluded, “and now it’s just about putting that belief and all of those preparations into practice, and getting the performances we require when we walk out onto the field.”

Real Madrid open to selling Odegaard for €40m with Arsenal poised to swoop after Willock's move to Newcastle is confirmed

The 23-year-old once seemed set to take Europe by storm, but has struggled for minutes at Monaco, and is now set for a third loan to Turkey

Unsurprisingly, given the nation’s pedigree in Fifa youth competition, Nigeria has had more than its fair share of promising young talents seemingly with the world at their feet.

From those who never quite hit the heights – Etim Esin, Macauley Chrisantus, Femi Opabunmi – to those who did – Nwankwo Kanu, John Obi Mikel – an attempt at a comprehensive listing would fill up a moderately-sized fantasy tome.

However, even by those standards, watching Henry Onyekuru break out at KAS Eupen between 2015 and 2017 was a deeply enlivening experience. As he weighed in when it mattered to lift the club from the second tier into the Belgian top flight, it quickly became apparent this was a kid who seemed capable of doing it all, and who actually wanted to—he relished the responsibility of carrying a team.

His ability to turn his dial up as the level and stakes demanded bore this out: in the Jupiler League, he accounted for 30 percent of Eupen’s goal total in 2016/17, and when the Europa League play-offs came around at the end of that season, he positively exploded, scoring 10 goals (exactly half the club’s total) in 10 matches.

It was unsurprising, then, that he began to attract interest from around Europe.

It was not just his eye for goal that was so enticing, of course.

Starting from a nominal wide position, Onyekuru possessed a sharp burst of acceleration, was an outstanding finisher and excelled at skipping past challenges on either side, most often zipping toward goal immediately but also capable to rinsing the full-back on the outside.

Utilized as an attacking outlet, he had the tools to be truly devastating.

In the summer of 2017, Everton paid a £7 million fee to sign him, despite the improbability of securing a work permit, before sending him out on loan to Champions League campaigners Anderlecht.

Despite an encouraging start to life with the Belgian giants, for whom he scored 10 times in his first 28 matches in all competitions, it was here that things began to sour for Onyekuru. Midway through the season, he suffered a serious knee ligament injury – ironically in a game against former employers Eupen – which required surgery and kept him out for eight months, effectively ending his loan.

While he would go on to make a full recovery, it can be argued that he has yet to fully rebound from that juddering halt to his momentum. There have been two loans to Turkish giants Galatasaray since (one of which saw him contribute to a league title), as well as a transfer to French Ligue 1 side Monaco. However, a lot of that early promise seems to have dissipated, and as the goals have dried up, his flaws have come more sharply into focus.

It appeared last summer that he was set to finally put down roots in the Principality. Former Bayern Munich boss Robert Kovac took the reins at Stade Louis II, and immediately nailed his mast to the Onyekuru boat.

Back in August, he referred to the 23-year-old as “one of the best wingers in Ligue 1”, and started him in the opening two matches of the season against Reims and Metz.

However, it quickly became clear there was not an obvious way to fit him into a coherent tactical set-up.

As it turns out, the relative freedom from defensive and positional responsibility he was afforded early in his development at Eupen had stunted him somewhat, birthing an attacker who was not only unwilling to help the rest of the team maintain compactness, but simply did not know how to involve himself during non-transitional attacks. As such, he often existed on the periphery – sometimes literally – and would simply stand in space on the left flank, spectating as the team laboured to break down opponents in those early matches.

Since the trip to Metz on August 30, Onyekuru has only made two further appearances for Les Monegasques in all competitions this season. Both have come from the substitutes bench, and while he managed a match-winning assist against Nantes, reports indicate he is very much out of favour at Monaco.

A return to Galatasaray, where he spent the latter half of the 2019/20 season, beckons.

It is an offer the player is apparently partial toward: back in October 2019, it was revealed Onyekuru was wont to fly 11 hours, from Monaco to Istanbul, for haircuts with a Nigerian barber based in Turkey. An egregious extravagance, no doubt, but also an indication Onyekuru feels eminently at home on the Bosporus.

However, it would be difficult not to see such a decision, were both parties to follow through, as the meekest of surrenders by Onyekuru. In terms of competitive level, the Turkish Super Lig is hardly a hot destination; indeed, it is something of a retirement league, where senior players go for one last cheque. The pay is good when you can get it, and the standard is hardly sufficient to get the blood pumping. Easy street.

A third spell there at the age of 23 tells its own story, and that not a very flattering one: it would cast the Nigeria international as an individual who would rather have it cushy than fight. It would also make it impossible to argue against the notion that he has failed at the top level, a perception that would all but rule out any kind of return to Europe’s top leagues, even if he did utterly dominate the Super Lig...and even that is not guaranteed, considering his last spell saw him manage only one goal in 10 appearances for Gala.

It is a decision that, though easy, should not be taken lightly. The alternatives – stay and learn, or find a club within mainland Europe with a more suitable playing style – clearly require greater effort, and offer less immediate gratification, but they offer far greater upside.

Your move, Henry.

Liverpool vs Manchester City preview: How to watch on TV, live stream, team news & prediction

The Democratic Republic of Congo opened their campaign in Chan with a slim 1-0 win over their rivals Congo at the Stade Omnisport de Douala on Sunday night.

Chico Ushindi wa Kubanza was the hero as his second-half strike handed his team maximum points in Group B.

The Leopards have had a good run in the second-tier competition and remain the most successful having won it a record two times in 2009 and 2016 in Ivory Coast and Rwanda respectively.

They were playing the Red Devils whose last win against them was way back on July 28, 2013. After that meeting, the Leopards had managed to get two wins and three draws in the five games played in all competitions.

It is Congo Kinshasa who started the game well but failed to capitalise on the chances created.

Two minutes after the break, they got their breakthrough. A good ball from the left was not cleared and it fell to Ushindi who curled it past the goalkeeper to ensure his team go top of the group with maximum points from the one game played.

The scorer was later substituted in the 61st minute with Kadima Kabangu taking his place.

In an earlier match at the same venue, Libya and Niger played to a goalless draw.

The North Africans came into the match as favourites owing to their recent run against the West African outfit. The Mediterranean Knights had defeated the Ménas twice in their last four friendly games, with the remaining two meetings ending in draws.

The latest game between the two teams was in a friendly game played on September 7, 2019, where Libya claimed a 2-0 win.

On Sunday, the two countries were meeting in the Chan competition for the first time. But after 90 minutes, the spoils were shared.

On January 21, Libya will be tackling group leaders Congo DR while Niger will be up against Congo.

On Monday, matches in Group C will be played. The first game will be between the defending champions Morocco who will be entertaining Togo.

The second game will be a derby between East African outfits Uganda and Rwanda.

Chan 2021: Rwanda have what it takes to beat Uganda – Sugira

The APR striker is ready to lead by example when they open their Group C campaign with a clash against the Cranes

Rwanda striker Ernest Sugira is confident they have what it takes to beat their East African rivals Uganda in their opening match of the African Nations Championship on Monday.

The two neighbours will come face to face at Stade de la Reunification in Douala after Morocco takes on Togo in the group's opener.

However, Sugira is confident they have matured enough and ready to handle their opponents, who have always enjoyed winning matches against them.

“We are going to face a tough team which plays with physicality, and is so aggressive in attack,” Sugira told New Times. “We need to avoid conceding a goal so early and instead play our own game as planned. I am confident we can get three points from them.

“We are both in a tough group but we are not underdogs. We have a 75 percent chance to progress but only if we win our first game against Uganda. We took time to watch their videos and we know what a tough opponent they are but we aren’t easy to beat either.”

Despite Rwanda being pooled in Group C alongside defending champions Morocco, Uganda, and debutants Togo, Sugira has maintained they will progress from the group stage and also called upon Rwandan fans to rally behind the team.

“We have been reading what is written or said about the national team, but this is the time Rwandans should start believing in us. It’s their national team and their support will do a lot of good for us,” continued the APR striker but who is currently on loan at rivals Rayon Sports.

“We have to share the good and the bad but it’s time for us to change and do better on the pitch and improve and bring back a smile on their faces, we are doing our best to adjust our performances and this is a good opportunity to do it.”

During the 2016 Chan, Sugira was the darling of Rwanda fans as he scored three goals in the group stage to help the team reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Sugira is now hoping to replicate the same form by stating: “I had good moments at Chan 2016, but a lot has changed between now and then. This is an opportunity for me to prove what I am capable of on the pitch but what is important is to help my team get good results.”

The last encounter between the two nations was in 2017 in Kigali during the Chan qualification campaign, where Rwanda won 2-0, but they were eliminated because the Cranes had won 3-0 in Kampala.

Black Leopards coach Kerr reveals how he plotted Orlando Pirates' downfall at training

The victory was just the second of the season for Lidoda Duvha while it was the second league defeat this term for the Buccaneers

Black Leopards coach Dylan Kerr was pleased with how his men carried out his instructions in Sunday's 2-0 league victory over Orlando Pirates at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

The result, thanks to an Innocent Maela own goal and a Roderick Kabwe goal, lifted Leopards off the bottom of the table and up to 14th spot and should give the Limpopo side a major shot of confidence going forward.

For Pirates, who will surely have ambitions of challenging for the league title, it was a big setback and leaves them in fifth position and eight points adrift of the top two sides, Mamelodi Sundowns and Swallows FC.

For Kerr, there were several aspects to his team's play that made him happy.

"I've always said from day one that if we keep the ball moving, and keep possession and rotate the ball, with my players, nobody can touch us,” he said after the game.

"When we did (give possession away), we defended like a unit as we practised on Thursday. They did everything which was asked of them which was pleasing.

"I'm just pleased to keep a clean sheet, I don't think King [Ndlovu] had a save to make in 90 minutes, and that's Orlando Pirates you're playing against."

Kerr also played down the fact that his side had enjoyed more time to prepare for the game - Leopards did not have a midweek match, while Bucs beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 3-0 on Wednesday, also at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

"I'm not going to make an excuse that they played on Wednesday and we didn't play, because we still trained as hard as they played and they've had lots of rest and recovery,” the Englishman said.

"On Thursday we did an hour on finishing, we did one v one, three v three, four v threes, overloads. And it showed, they actually did it for the first time in a long time, they did exactly what I asked them to do. Get into areas, get it wide, don't panic, don't rush things."

Lack of consistency remains Orlando Pirates' biggest challenge - Banyana Banyana legend Dlamini

The 2012 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCN) silver medalist on what the Buccaneers need to do to turn their current form around

Banyana Banyana legend Amanda Dlamini says Orlando Pirates' biggest problem is lack of consistency following their defeat to Black Leopards on Sunday.

The Buccaneers succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Lidoda Duvha in a PSL match which took place at Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo.

It was Pirates' second defeat in their last four league games having won one match in the process and Dlamini, who played for South Africa at the 2016 Olympic Games, discussed Bucs' recent struggles.

"I think that has always been Orlando Pirates' biggest problem or biggest challenge. It is that lack of consistency," Dlamini told SuperSport TV after the match.

"They do well in one game or two games and the third one on the road probably they lose it. So I think for them, it has been about consistency.

"But of course, there are a lot of factors which attributed to their loss today. They will go back and try to rectify."

The retired midfielder believes that Pirates remain a good team and that they will be able to get their league title charge back on track.

"It doesn't make them a bad team overnight, but of course you need that quality from them. They are seasoned campaigners," she continued.

"They should be able to deal with these kinds of situations. For them I think, it is just back to the drawing board for them as usual."

Pirates will now take on an unbeaten Lamontville Golden Arrows side in a league game at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Leopards ended their five-match winless run when they defeated Pirates and the win took them out of the relegation zone as they are now placed 14th on the PSL log.

Dlamini revealed that the Lidoda Duvha players feel that their inability to hold onto a lead has been their main problem this season.

"Well, I had a brief opportunity to chat to some of the players, who said 'we take the lead, but we cannot identify moments when we have to apply game management whereby we say in the 70th minute maybe let us consolidate and make sure that we get that one extra goal'. That is the experience that they need," she said.

Dlamini also believes that Leopards will not be involved in a relegation battle if they win their next game which is against Cape Town City at Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday.

"But of course, this is a starting area for them. It can only get better for them. If they get at least another win, I think they will be out of this relegation fight," she concluded.

10 years since Heung-Min Son scored his first international goal against India

The Tottenham star could have scored a hat-trick against the Blue Tigers but for the heroics of a certain Subrata Paul…

18th January 2011 might be a date that is special for star Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min. For it was on this day, exactly 10 years ago, that he scored his first international goal for his country.

The occasion and the opponents? None other than India in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Doha.

It might not have been a memorable outing for the Indian national team but the game also marked the final competitive appearance of one of India's greatest footballers in Bhaichung Bhutia. The Blue Tigers went down 4-1 to South Korea, with Ji Dong-won scoring a brace while Koo Ja-Cheol and Son completing the scoring for the South Koreans. India's consolation was a penalty by Sunil Chhetri.

Son, considered an absolute icon in South Korea, has been tearing it up in the Premier League with Tottenham. In fact, he is the first Asian player to score 50 goals in the Premier League and is also the highest-ranked Asian to have featured in the Ballon d'Or lists.

He has 89 caps for South Korea and has scored 26 goals for them. He helped the Taeguk Warriors reach the final of the 2015 Asian Cup and also excelled in South Korea's brief campaign in the 2018 World Cup. Son scored in South Korea's famous 2-0 win over Germany in the group stages though the team could not progress from the group.

But it all started for the 28-year-old back in 2011. All of 18 back then, Son was playing for Bundesliga side Hamburger SV and was earmarked for success.

He made his debut for the national team in a pre-tournament friendly against Syria on 30 December 2010 as the team prepared for the 2011 Asian Cup. He would get his second appearance against India in the final group game and he made his mark.

Photo: Son Heung-Min (11) celebrates with teammate Koo Ja-Cheol after scoring the fourth goal against India at the Al-Gharafa stadium in Doha

This was a game where the Koreans completely dominated the proceedings with 15 shots on target, 15 shots off target and as many as eight being blocked.

While the focus was on Manchester United star Ji-Sung Park and Swansea City’s Ki-Sung Yeung, it was an 18-year-old Son who made an instant impact after coming on in the second half. It was a sublime left-footed finish from a tight angle in the 81st minute that beat Subrata Paul all ends up and helped Korea register a thumping 4-1 victory.

Son was at his best against the Indians as he not only scored a goal but also carved open the Indian defence on quite a few occasions.

After scoring the goal, he celebrated by making a heart with his hands as a tribute for his brother (Heung-yun Son) whose birthday fell on the same day. It was special for Son because he and his brother were trained by their father Son Woong-jung, a former professional footballer who aimed to take his sons to the top with a strict and disciplined regimen.

While Heung-yun made it only till the fifth tier of German professional football system, Heung-min Son has certainly did his brother, father and his country proud by reaching the pinnacle.

As FAM changes tune to placate Zamsaham, Kelantan tell MFL to show them the money

FAM deputy president Yusoff Mahadi has urged that new Kelantan owner Norizam Tukiman be welcome warmly into the local football fraternity.

After Kelantan FC owner Norizam Tukiman hit back at last week's news that his club may face Malaysian FA's (FAM) sanctions for failing to settle unpaid wages that had been incurred before his ownership, the association has now attempted to calm things down.

Over the last weekend, businessman Norizam who is also more-popularly known as Zamsaham, went on social media tirades against FAM and Malaysian competitions organiser Malaysian Football League (MFL). Feeling unjustly targeted by recent developments concerning the club he spent RM6.8 million purchasing, he questioned FAM's success and accused MFL of failing to pay his club's share of the profits. Both entities are led by the same person; Datuk Hamidin Amin.

On Sunday evening, Malaysia's football governing body provided an interview with its deputy president Datuk Wira Yusoff Mahadi to the press, in which he stresses the need to work together with those who have invested in club football in the country, such as Norizam.

"There are not many people who want to invest huge sums of their own money like Zamsaham. The Malaysian footballing fraternity must welcome figures like him in order to help the country's football industry.

"We must discuss this matter cordially, and I have been mandated with the task of welcoming Norizam to the discussion table with Stuart (FAM secretary-general Stuart Ramalingam) and Dato’ Ghani (MFL CEO Dato’ Ab Ghani Hassan) soon.

"I want FAM and MFL to hash the issue out so that everyone comes out of the discussion satisfied," said Yusoff.

But just hours later, the Malaysia Premier League club posted on its Facebook account demand letters they have sent through lawyers to MFL, for payments Norizam had earlier claimed are owed by the organisation to the Red Warriors. The most recent letter is dated 15 January 2021

The payments are purportedly for referee fees of three league matches, as well as for the broadcast of Kelantan matches on the Mycujoo website, although the exact figures have been blurred before the letters were posted.
