Akintola on target as Gabon's Boupendza scores four in Hatayspor win over Antalyaspor

The African stars helped Murat Sonmez's side bag a comfortable away win at Antalya with their contributions in front of goal

Gabon forward Aaron Boupendza scored four goals while Nigeria's David Akintola grabbed a goal in Hatayspor's 6-0 victory over Antalyaspor in a Turkish Super Lig match on Tuesday.

The encounter, initially scheduled for Monday, was postponed to this evening due to heavy rainfall which flooded the pitch and restricted the players from warming up.

Despite the incident, Boupendza got the visitors off to a flying start at the Antalya Stadium with his opening goal in the eighth minute and he doubled their lead in the 17th minute.

Four minutes later, the Gabon international grabbed his first career hat-trick and Akintola made it 4-0 in the 35th minute after benefitting an assist from Senegal's Mame Diouf.

Towards the end of the first-half, Boupendza linked up with his Nigerian teammate and made it 5-0 for Hatayspor while Mirkan Aydin completed the emphatic win for the visitors on the stroke of full-time.

Tuesday's heroics took Boupendza's tally to seven goals after 12 league appearances which made the 24-year-old the second-highest African goal scorer in the Turkish Super Lig after Cameroon's Vincent Aboubakar who has eight goals to his name at Besiktas.

He was replaced in the 83rd minute while Akintola was substituted in the 89th minute after taking his tally to three goals and an assist in 11 league outings in his debut Super Lig campaign.

The result brought Hatayspor back to winning ways after their 1-0 loss to Trabzonspor last Tuesday and it ensured they ended 2020 in grand style.

Murat Sonmez's side have moved up to sixth in the Turkish top-flight standings with 24 points from 14 games. They will be aiming to maintain their fine goalscoring form when they host Konyaspor for their next league outing on January 2.

Arteta: Arsenal's picture looks much better after 'massively important' Brighton win

Alexandre Lacazette scored just 29 seconds after coming off the bench to give the Gunners back-to-back wins for only the second time this season

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal’s narrow win over Brighton on Tuesday was “massively important”, with the Gunners’ season taking on a different complexion after another three points.

Following the 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day, Arsenal have now won back-to-back games for the first time since the opening two games of the season.

Alexandre Lacazette’s excellent finish after Bukayo Saka’s surging run down the right proved the only goal as Arteta’s side came out on the right side of a tight game.

The win took Arsenal up to 13th in the Premier League, nine points clear of the relegation zone and with the top half within touching distance.

"We know we've been struggling with results,” Arteta told Amazon Prime. “The fact we won against Chelsea was a big boost. To come here and get another win was massively important.

"I'm proud for the boys and happy for the result. Lacazette is in a good moment. He's full of confidence. We wanted to change the team in the second half and give it some freshness.

"We weren't threatening in certain areas. In the second half we looked much more confident and we were playing more forward.

"The best medicine is wins. It's a different world and a different story. The picture looks much better."

With 2020 drawing to a close, Arteta is reflecting on a tumultuous first full calendar year in charge at the Emirates Stadium.

His early successes and FA Cup win are distant memories now but, going into the new year, the Spaniard is hopeful of more positive times ahead.

"For any manager it's [been] hard enough considering the context - it's been quite a challenge. I've suffered in some moments but I have great people around me."

While Arsenal moved away from the bottom three, Brighton’s defeat left the Seagulls just two points clear of the drop zone.

"If you don't score and they do, then that's how it is,” manager Graham Potter said.

"Our work-rate was really, really good. We fell short and didn't come away with anything. We're suffering at the moment. The level we're playing at, the opposition have qualities themselves and can score from one chance.

"We feel like we've consistently performed well. We've been in the games. In this league you do suffer, but you have to stick together.

"There are no easy games in this league. Nothing changes from our perspective. Every game is a fight."

Coutinho injury adds to Barca's woes as Catalans record worst La Liga start since 2003

The Brazilian left his side reduced to 10 men in the dying minutes of Tuesday's draw when he suffered an apparent knee problem

Barcelona's tribulations in La Liga continued in their final game of 2020 as Philippe Coutinho limped off injured and Eibar ensured the Catalans recorded their worst start to a league campaign for 17 years.

Lionel Messi was left out of Ronald Koeman's squad on Tuesday and watched from the stands at Camp Nou as the hosts looked to make up lost ground on pace-setters Real and Atletico Madrid

But the misfiring Blaugrana found no way past Eibar and were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw that leaves them marooned in sixth place

Martin Braithwaite missed from the penalty spot before Kike Garcia fired the visitors ahead, although Ousmane Dembele was able to level the scores and earn Koeman's charges a share of the points.

And deep into injury time there was further consternation in the Barca ranks as Coutinho was forced off.

The Brazilian went down holding his knee after attempting a pass and, despite receiving treatment, played no further part in the match.

As Barca had already made all five substitutions, including Coutinho, they played the final minutes with 10 men, while serious injury to Coutinho could scupper any chances of finding the playmaker a new club during the January transfer window.

Barcelona thus ended 2020 on a low note, as once more they failed to click under Koeman.

A series of adverse results additionally means that the Blaugrana, who have won just seven of their opening 15 La Liga games, are en route to suffer their worst start for almost two decades.

Not since 2003, under the stewardship of Koeman's old Netherlands team-mate Frank Rijkaard, have Barca failed to win more than half of their opening 15 league fixtures.

While Messi has been far from his mercurial best in 2020-21, the Argentine's absence continues to be felt.

Since his debut in 2004 Barca have won 73.7 per cent of their Liga games when Leo has featured; compared to just 55.9% when he has played no part in the match.

Barcelona 1-1 Eibar: Koeman's men struggle without Messi

Ousmane Dembele cancelled out Kike Garcia's opener as Barcelona, who missed a penalty through Martin Braithwaite, were held by Eibar.

Lionel Messi's absence was sorely felt by Barcelona on Tuesday as Ronald Koeman's side were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Eibar at Camp Nou.

Barca had given Messi – who was watching from the stands – a break to nurse an ankle injury, but the six-time Ballon d'Or winner's creativity and goal threat was badly missed as the hosts dropped points for the eighth time in 15 LaLiga games this season.

Martin Braithwaite was duly punished for an early penalty miss – a LaLiga-high third of the campaign for the Catalan giants – when Kike Garcia took full advantage of a Ronald Araujo error in the 57th minute.

Substitute Ousmane Dembele salvaged a draw for Barca 10 minutes later, although they are seven points behind leaders Atletico Madrid despite having played two games more.

Barca squandered a golden opportunity to take an eighth-minute lead, Braithwaite dragging his spot-kick wide after referee Javier Alberola Rojas had used the pitchside monitor to penalise Pedro Bigas for a foul on Araujo.

The Denmark international thought he had made amends shortly after the midway point of the first half, but his cool strike from Junior Firpo's cross was ruled out by VAR for offside.

Antoine Griezmann then pulled an effort wide from outside the penalty area as Barca went in at the interval having had just a solitary shot on target.

Dembele and Miralem Pjanic flashed strikes wide in the early stages of the second half before the former was denied by Marko Dmitrovic after being played clean through.

The Frenchman was made to pay for that miss when Kike picked Araujo's pocket inside the Barca half and coolly slotted past Marc-Andre ter Stegen for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Dembele belatedly got the better of Dmitrovic in the 67th minute, firing home at the back post after Junior's cross flashed across the face of goal.

Francisco Trincao clipped narrowly wide of Dmitrovic's right-hand post in stoppage time as Barca missed the opportunity to make up ground on Atleti ahead of the leaders' clash with Getafe on Wednesday.

What does it mean? Another defensive lapse costs hosts

The result extended Barca's unbeaten streak in LaLiga to five games – their longest run in the competition under Koeman – but there was little to celebrate after taking just a point against a side they had won 11 of their previous 12 previous top-flight games against.

Messi's return will give them more firepower but the Argentine superstar will not be able to do anything about their woeful defending. Kike's strike was the fourth time this season a Barca error has led to a goal – more than any other team in the league.

Dembele a rare bright spot

Dembele was the only Barca player who could be pleased with his contribution. His goal came from one of three shots – the most of any Barca player – while he made a game-high four key passes, despite only playing 45 minutes.

Griezmann fails to fill Messi void

The France international endured a game to forget, having just one shot on target and failing to create a chance for a team-mate before he was hauled off in the 66th minute. Messi cannot return soon enough.

What's next?

Barca travel to rock-bottom Huesca on Sunday, the same day Eibar host Granada.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-1 Arsenal: Super-sub Lacazette lifts Gunners to second straight win

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-1 Arsenal: Super-sub Lacazette lifts Gunners to second straight win

Mikel Arteta dropped Alexandre Lacazette at Brighton but was grateful to the Arsenal substitute for a vital second-half goal.

Alexandre Lacazette rode to Arsenal's rescue with the winner from the bench at Brighton and Hove Albion as a 1-0 success made it back-to-back Premier League victories since Christmas.

A seven-game winless run in the league was ended on Boxing Day as the Gunners beat Chelsea, although Mikel Arteta's men remained in 15th place after a dismal start to the season.

Rather than build on that triumph, a further setback appeared likely for a time at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday against Brighton, whose only prior home league win in 2020 had come on Arsenal's previous visit back in June.

But Lacazette, who lost his place in the XI to fit-again captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, scored 29 seconds after his introduction as a substitute to settle a key clash in the bottom half in Arsenal's favour.

There was little in the first half to suggest Arsenal had brought forward any momentum from the Chelsea game, with Brighton well on top but themselves missing a cutting edge.

Bernd Leno watched Alireza Jahanbakhsh lash the best early chance over with the outside of his right boot, before the goalkeeper was belatedly called into action by the same man with the first shot on target eight minutes before the break.

Arsenal survived a goalmouth scramble within a minute of the restart, but they finally provided a threat on the counter soon after and Robert Sanchez blocked from Aubameyang at point-blank range.

An improved spell saw Gabriel Martinelli drive just over and the arrival of Lacazette on 66 minutes prompted the breakthrough.

A storming run down the right from Bukayo Saka created space for Lacazette, who was able to control in the centre with his first touch and fire decisively beyond Sanchez.

Only an apparent injury to Saka in the closing stages could put a dampener on a much better Arsenal second half.

What does it mean? Rollercoaster 2020 ends on a high

Arsenal have had quite the ride in the past 12 months. They were similarly struggling in the Premier League a year ago but recovered to achieve a respectable eighth-placed finish while crucially winning the FA Cup.

The 2020-21 campaign has been more testing still for Arteta, yet their first league win against Brighton since 1981 took the Gunners up to 13th, now nine points clear of danger.

Brighton remain very much in peril, meanwhile, having become the first team ever to complete a calendar year in the Premier League while winning just once at home.

Lacazette looks the part

It figured that Arsenal should only find the net after calling for Lacazette. No player in the Premier League has scored the opening goal in a game as often as the Gunners striker this season (five times).

His swift strike was also the fastest league goal by an Arsenal substitute since Opta records began in 2006-07.

Aubameyang problems persist

Skipper Aubameyang had missed the biggest chance of the match prior to Lacazette's appearance, but an anonymous first half was more concerning as he failed to justify his selection.

The Gabon forward had just 12 touches before the interval, of which as many were in Arsenal's box as Brighton's (one apiece), as the visitors failed to register a first-half shot on target for the fourth time this season.

Key Opta Facts

- Lacazette has scored in each of his past three games for Arsenal in all competitions, after netting just once in his previous 12.
- Since the start of last season, Saka has registered 15 assists in all competitions for Arsenal, more than any other player for the club.
- Brighton have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games, drawing seven and losing six.
- Arsenal kept their fourth away clean sheet this season in the Premier League, a figure only Aston Villa can better in 2020-21 (five).

What's next?

Arsenal are on the road against a side below them in the table again on Saturday as they visit West Brom. Brighton host Wolves earlier the same day.

LIVE: Manchester United vs Wolves

Manchester United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to nine games with a 1-0 victory over Wolves.

Marcus Rashford scored in second-half stoppage time to earn Manchester United a 1-0 win over Wolves and send the Red Devils up to second in the Premier League.

In the 93rd minute of a turgid game with few clear chances for either side, the two stars of United's season combined to produce a goal that took their tally to 10 points from their past four games at Old Trafford and ended 2020 on a high.

Wolves failed to capitalise on United's flat display, prioritising their own low block to stifle the threat of fast breaks that brought Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men six goals against Leeds United in their previous home game, and defender Romain Saiss was the visitors' most potent attacking force.

But they slipped up late on when they failed to track Rashford's run onto a brilliant Bruno Fernandes pass and the England international's deflected goal extended his side's unbeaten run to nine league matches.

Saiss looped a header onto the top of the crossbar as Wolves threatened from a 22nd-minute free-kick, and United went close to opening the scoring when Fernandes' close-range volley was saved by the legs of Rui Patricio after 34 minutes.

David de Gea kept the scores level at the end of a difficult first half for the hosts, the United goalkeeper making a crucial save with his fists to block Saiss' near-post flick.

Edinson Cavani had the ball in the net after 68 minutes when he swept home Eric Bailly's knock-down following a corner but the effort was ruled out for offside.

A rare glimmer of brilliance from Paul Pogba forced Rui Patricio into a diving save from a raking 25-yard drive, before De Gea superbly staved off the threat of a Wolves winner by getting down quickly to parry Rayan Ait-Nouri's low angled shot away.

Just as it looked as though Wolves would run down the clock, Fernandes released Rashford with a 40-yard pass that was dispatched into the bottom-right corner – a touch off Saiss wrongfooting Rui Patricio.

What does it mean? Second place flatters tepid United

The win extends United's excellent run of results, but at the end of a year in which football's entertainment value has never been more important, this was a game to forget.

It took the Red Devils until the 34th minute to force a save from Patricio through Fernandes and they ended the game with just three shots on target. Such displays make it hard to see them as genuine title contenders, but their form suggests otherwise. They are now two points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Fernandes always fires

Even when United are flat, Fernandes remains in form and he provided three key passes, including the assist, and attempted three shots – the joint-most alongside Rashford.

Greenwood ineffective

Mason Greenwood created two chances before being substituted in the 64th minute, but the United forward was largely anonymous and failed to provide his side with an effective option on the right wing.

Key Opta Facts

- Rashford's winner (92:51) was United's latest winning goal in a Premier League game at Old Trafford since September 2009, when Michael Owen scored at 95:27 against Manchester City.
- Wolves have now conceded in each of their past nine games in the Premier League; their joint-longest run without a clean sheet in the competition under Nuno Espirito Santo (also nine games between December 2019 and January 2020.
- Since his Premier League debut in February, Fernandes has been directly involved in more goals in the competition than any other player (32 – 18 goals, 14 assists).

What's next?

United are at home again on New Year's Day when Aston Villa are the visitors to Old Trafford, and Wolves' first game of 2021 comes a day later at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Chicago Red Stars acquire USWNT winger Pugh from Sky Blue FC

The 22-year-old spent less than one year with the New Jersey-based club and will now look to find a run of form and fitness in the Midwest

The Chicago Red Stars have acquired U.S. national team forward/winger Mallory Pugh and midfielder Sarah Killion Woldmoe in a trade from Sky Blue FC.

In exchange, Sky Blue will receive the fourth and eighth overall selections in the 2021 NWSL Draft, a conditional first round pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft and an international slot for 2021 and 2022.

For Pugh, it is her second trade within the space of a year after joining Sky Blue from the Washington Spirit in January. Due to injury and a reduced schedule amid the coronavirus pandemic, the World Cup winner made just one appearance for Sky Blue.

In Chicago, Pugh will be reunited with fellow 2019 World Cup champions Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, Morgan Gautrat, and Tierna Davidson.

“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to play for the Chicago Red Stars,” Pugh said in a club release. “The team has so many great players, including some of my USWNT teammates, and I can’t wait to join them and work hard to help the club bring home a championship.

"A huge thanks to the ownership and coach Rory Dames for making this happen. I’ll see you all in the Windy City soon.”

At 22, Pugh has already amassed 63 caps with the USWNT, tallying 18 goals.

She has, however, seen her stock fall of late as she was left off the USWNT Olympic qualifying roster earlier this year. After axing Pugh from his roster, USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski said he was looking for more consistency from the attacker.

"I want to be clear that she's a very talented player, she performed well and she has a big future in front of her so I'm pretty sure if she keeps on developing, going forward she will be on this roster," Andonovski said.

"For Mal, consistency is crucial for being on this roster. She needs to be more consistent in the day to day, which is extremely hard."

Woldmoe, meanwhile, spent six years with Sky Blue after she was selected second overall in the 2015 NWSL Draft. She has made 116 NWSL appearances and has 11 goals and nine assists in her career.

Ten Hag on Ronaldo: 'He's gone, it's the past'

The Celtic legend ruled out the possibility of being in the coaching hot seat at a PSL club

Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Thabo Nthethe insists that he has no regrets over his failed managerial career at TS Galaxy.

The retired central defender was announced as Galaxy's new team manager by club chairman Tim Sukazi prior to the start of the current season.

However, Nthethe quit the job at the Mpumalanga-based side after a month and he refused to disclose reasons why he left the club.

The former Bafana Bafana international had joined the club as a player at the beginning of the 2019/20 National First Division (NFD) season, but he retired in January 2020.

“I don’t have any regrets that my career as team manager has yet to materialise," Nthethe told Daily Sun

“I enjoyed myself as a player at Galaxy. Being a manager is one of the things I’d love to do to benefit any team. I was looking forward to the job that Sukazi offered me.

“But things never worked out the way I had planned and I decided to move on with my life. I still believe that it will eventually happen when the timing is right.”

The 36-year-old, who turned out for Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United in the PSL, is not interested in becoming a coach.

“I don’t see myself on the bench as a coach in the PSL. If it happens it will be with development structures," he added.

"I can only advice the first-team coach while being in the role of manager, but not become the man at the helm.”

Nthethe helped Celtic clinch the 2012 Telkom Knockout triumph as the club captain, before moving to Sundowns in the following year.

The Bloemfontein-born player said winning the Caf Champions League trophy with Downs in 2016 was his biggest achievement at club level.

“I have won a lot of trophies, but winning the Champions League was definitely the icing on the cake in my career," he said.

"It was a great moment, not only for me and Sundowns fans, but for the football fraternity in South Africa.”

Nthethe also helped Sundowns clinch three PSL titles, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout under coach Pitso Mosimane.

'Sadly most of them died' - Orlando Pirates' Lepasa saddened by Covid-19 experience

The Bucs star is very concerned following his visit to the health centre as he continues to nurse his injury

Orlando Pirates centre forward Zakhele Lepasa has opened up about what he recently experienced at a hospital amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

The 23-year-old player is currently out nursing a leg injury which he picked up during the Buccaneers' 1-0 win over Chippa United in a PSL match two weeks ago.

Lepasa then missed Pirates' 1-0 win over former Angolan champions Sagrada Esperanca in the Caf Confederation Cup first-round first-leg game on December 22.

The South Africa under-23 international took to his official Twitter page to express his sadness after seeing pictures of Covid-19 patients.

"Last week in hospital I saw some horrible pictures of people who had Covid-19 and were admitted there," Lepasa wrote on Twitter

"And sadly most of them died. And I don’t wish that on anyone. It’s so sad that a person can be okay today and become bedridden tomorrow.

"Nothing saddens me like to hear that there are people who followed the safety rules and still got Covid-19.

"It has come to a point where we all have to think about the next person and not ourselves. Your mom, granny or aunt at home. Think about them then not you."

Lepasa's Pirates teammate Ben Motshwari was the first PSL player to be tested positive with Covid-19 in May 2020.

However, the central midfielder recovered in the following month and he has been one of Bucs' top performers this season.

Lepaza has been a regular for Josef Zinnbauer's side this term having played 11 matches across all competitions and found the back of the net twice in the process.

The lanky player, who shot to prominence after helping TS Galaxy clinch the 2018 Nedbank Cup, is expected to miss the Buccaneers' upcoming blockbuster clash with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Sundowns are set to play host to Pirates in an eagerly anticipated PSL match at the 2010 Fifa World Cup Round of 16 venue, Loftus Versfeld Stadium, in Tshwane on Saturday.

Pirates are placed fifth on the league standings - five points behind leaders, Sundowns, but they have a game in hand.

Express FC’s Walusimbi ready for position change, Etrude lauds Bbosa

The defender had to face SC Villa in a different position after Charles Musiige was ruled out due to an injury

After playing against SC Villa at right-back, Express FC captain Enock Walusimbi has revealed a readiness to play in whichever position coach Wasswa Bbosa deploys him.

Walusimbi, after missing the games against Bright Stars and Mbarara City, was deployed at the full-back position against the Jogoos after Charles Musiige was injured.

Bbosa made the change as he also did not want to undo the Isa Lumu and Murushid Juuko partnership at centre-back.

“Firstly it wasn’t my first time to play right-back in that game though it had been a while since I’d last played there,” Walusimbi told the club’s portal.

“Just like I play at centre back, I was as comfortable as they came and I believe I put in a good shift, therefore, for whichever defensive role the head coach [Bbossa] deploys me in, I’ll always be ready.

The defender missed two games after he had been sent off during an encounter against Onduparaka FC at Arua, and stated his satisfaction in how the teammates did their duties while he was away.

“At Express, we have quite a good number of leaders so I am always sure even in my absence the boys will pull through,” he concluded. “They did a good job although we’re not done yet because we have a long way to go.”

Meanwhile, Abel Etrude has thanked Bbosa for trusting him with playtime despite being out of action for more than one year before he signed for the Red Eagles.

The former Onduparaka star signed a two-year deal at Express and has played in all the games this season.

“After a full season without active football, all I can say now is that I am back, having played all the four games,” the midfielder told the club’s portal.

“So far it is clear the coach has trusted me which has helped build my confidence and grown gradually in the game. I am grateful that I am playing in this competitive environment and hoping to improve more and more to help my team achieve its goals.”

Etrude said he and his teammates at Wankulukuku are determined to win a title in the end.

“As for the team, we’re all ambitious, we all feel it’s the time to make a positive mark on this great club,” he concluded. “There’s competition in the team, we keep getting better by the day working on things like our endurance and fitness levels.

“So, it’s only a matter of time and just like my mates, the target is to win silverware because everyone has done their part at the club.”

From a possible 12 points, Express have collected eight so far.

Transfer Talk: Bayern Munich keen on Chelsea's Kovacic for midfield revamp

The former Tottenham defender was found guilty of breaching betting violations by a Football Association panel

Diego Simeone has slammed the 10-week ban given to Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier for betting violations, saying the club have been unfairly punished for something they had nothing to do with.

The 30-year-old was fined £70,000 and banned for 10 weeks, effective immediately, from all football-related activity worldwide.

A Football Association panel found he broke betting rules at the time of his move from Tottenham to Atletico in the summer of 2019.

He is now set to miss 12 games for Simeone’s side, including the Champions League last-16 first leg against Chelsea on February 23 and 12 league fixtures.

Trippier will return in time for the Madrid derby on March 7 and his ban will be over before England’s next scheduled international against San Marino on March 25.

He has been a vital part of Atletico’s side this season, playing every minute in La Liga and the Champions League.

Ahead of their final fixture of 2020 against Getafe on Wednesday Atletico are joint-top of La Liga, level on points with Real Madrid with two games in hand. Third-placed Real Sociedad are six points behind, having played three more games than Simeone’s men.

Now, however, the Argentine will be forced into a tactical rethink – and he believes those in charge at the FA should rethink their response too.

“We think it’s unfair and we hope it can be revised because of the damage done to Atletico,” Simeone told a press conference.

“Atletico obviously have absolutely nothing to do with this situation so we hope it can be re-assessed in some way, because while the FA benefits from this, Atletico is harmed by it and has nothing to do with it.

“But the circumstances are what they are and we’ll have to live with it.”

It has been a busy few days to end the year for Atletico, with the club having terminated the contract of forward Diego Costa ahead of the January transfer window.

The former Chelsea striker, now 32, had made only seven appearances this season and requested the club end his contract early. His deal had been set to expire at the end of the season.

'I like to see great things' - Real Madrid boss Zidane gives verdict on Mbappe & Haaland

23' Soares returns to the pitch after two minutes of treatment and immediately slots back in on the left-hand side of defence. The visitors then attempt to press high up the pitch but Koeman's men appear unphased as they knock the ball about with relative ease from one side of the pitch to the other.

22' SAVE! Play gets back underway with Pjanic's corner towards the near post, which is met by the head of Araujo. The centre-back makes good connection with the header but Dmitrovic saves well to his left to stop the hosts from opening the scoring.

21' Griezmann finds Dest to the right of the area and the right wing-back then spurns a great crossing opportunity, as he fires straight into the stomach of Soares. That looked like a sore one for Eibar's left-back and, in fact, the visitors medical team are going to have to come on to treat him.

19' Koeman cuts a frustrated figure on the touchline so far, which comes as no surprise, given the visitors' relative dominance in the last ten minutes or so. Things do start to look more promising for his team, however, as Pjanic and De Jong have started to get their foot on the ball in the middle of the park in the last minute or so.

18' Dest is far too casual in possession as he attempts to spin past Soares. Fortunately for the hosts, despite dispossessing the right wing-back, Soares' cross into the area then gets headed away by Firpo, with Exposito ready to pounce behind him.

17' There is a bit of a scramble inside the area before Barcelona eventually regroup and clear the ball as far as the halfway line. Mendibilar's men then go down the left through Kadzior and look to have created an opening until Ter Stegen collects a high ball to calm things down.

15' Soares has acres of space to roam on the left and duly obliges before finding Kadzior, whose cross towards the near post gets turned away for another corner by Dest.

14' At home, Barcelona have won their six LaLiga games against Eibar, scoring at least three goals in each of these games and keeping three clean sheets, including their last two. Koeman and his men will be hoping to produce a similar result this game.

13' SInce the penalty, the away side have grown into the game. This time, Inui spins around Mingueza before winning his side's first corner of the game on the left.

12' Eibar's free-kick comes to nothing as Garcia collects the loose ball before drilling a left-footed effort well wide of Ter Stegen's goal to the left.

11' Firpo's first touch lets him down before the left wing-back catches Kadzior with a raised boot, offering the visitors a set-piece in a decent position to the right of the pitch.

10' The visitors will feel like the penalty miss is justice for a dubious VAR decision in the first place. Down the other end, Mendilibar's side have their first shot on target as Ter Stegen saves Inui's tame effort.

8' PENALTY MISS! Braithwaite stutters up to the penalty before driving a right-footed effort wide to the left of the goal! Dmitrovic dived the right way too but that does not matter as the hosts' striker puts the penalty wide of the target.

7' PENALTY TO BARCELONA! Referee Rojas consults the monitor on the touchline before deeming that Araujo did in fact beat Bigas to the loose ball in the area and that the centre-back was then caught by Bigas' trailing leg.

6' Koeman's side feel they should have a penalty after Araujo is caught late in the area by a combination of Bigas and Exposito from the corner. Referee Rojas disagrees but VAR is going to have a look at this while there is a break in play.

4' The first corner of the game comes as De Jong and Firpo link-up on the left-hand side, with the latter reaching the byline before his attempted cross gets turned behind.

3' Dest gets the chance to run at Soares and beats him near the right-hand touchline, however, the hosts' right wing-back then cuts the ball back to no one on the edge of the area, which allows the visitors to regain possession.

2' Pjanic sends a long ball for Braithwaite to chase but, after Burgos fails to intercept, Bigas clears up the danger and hooks a clearance to the left-hand side.

1' Referee Javier Alberola Rojas blows his whistle to get this LaLiga fixture underway!

The players are making their way out of the tunnel and shortly kick-off will be upon us.

The visitors have suffered their two biggest of margin defeats in LaLiga against Barcelona, both at Camp Nou, 1-6 in September 2017 and 0-5 in February 2020. Mendilibar’s men will be hopeful they can avoid another crushing loss here.

Jose Luis Mendilibar opts for three changes from Eibar’s defeat at Alaves. Diop joins Alvarez in midfield, while Kadzior, who was expected to miss out through illness, and Soares are the other two brought in by the visitors.

Ronald Koeman is forced into making two changes to his last starting eleven. Lionel Messi, who is nursing an ankle problem, drops out entirely and is replaced by Griezmann. At left wing-back, Jordi Alba misses out through suspension, meaning Firpo starts in the Spaniard’s place.

SUBS: Quique Gonzalez, Recio, Pedro Leon, Unai Dufur, Yoel Rodriguez, Paulo Oliveira, Sergi Enrich, Sergio Cubero, Roberto Olabe, Unai Arietaleanizbeaskoa, Yoshinori Muto.

SUBS: Sergio Busquets, Riqui Puig, Ousmane Dembele, Carles Alena, Neto, Samuel Umtiti, Phillipe Coutinho, Matheus Fernandes, Inaki Pena, Trincao.

BARCELONA (3-4-2-1): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Clement Lenglet, Ronald Araujo, Oscar Mingueza; Sergino Dest, Miralem Pjanic, Frenkie de Jong, Junior Firpo; Pedri, Antoine Griezmann; Martin Braithwaite.

After an underwhelming start to the campaign, the hosts have picked up in recent weeks, winning three of their last four to elevate them to fifth in the Spanish top-flight. In contrast, Eibar currently occupy 17th and have only collected 15 points from 15 matches thus far.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the LaLiga fixture between Barcelona and Eibar.

LIVE: Brighton vs Arsenal

39' The game has definitely picked up a little now. This time it's Arsenal coming forward and they win a corner after Bellerin's cross is diverted behind.

38' Brighton come again and force Leno into action. The ball is whipped in from the right and it's agonisingly out of reach for Bernardo. However, the ball is reecovered and Jahanbakhsh fires a low shot from the left-hand side of the box that draws a smart save from the Arsenal keeper.

36' Moments later, Elneny gifts the Seagulls an opportunity. The Egyptian's pass is picked up by Mac Allister who has one thing on his mind. He has options but takes the shot on and it flashes over the bar.

35' From a throw-in, Gross is afforded acres of space to get a ball into the box. It's loose and almost falls for Jahanbakhsh before Smith Rowe times his recovery challenge to perfection.

33' Some scrappy play is tidied up by Bissouma who feeds Veltman. The Dutchman whips the ball into the Arsenal area but there's nobody up in support.

32' Jahanbakhsh brings down a long ball well and lays it off for Mac Allister. The hosts win a throw-in before the Gunners force them all the way back to the goalkeeper.

30' Saka is fouled again, this time by Burn, and Arsenal have the opportunity to float a ball into the box. Smith Rowe does just that but Sanchez is out confidently to gather.

28' Smith Rowe steps over it and Xhaka attempts to find the near post. It's a good strike but a few yards too high to trouble Sanchez.

27' Smith Rowe lines up a shot before tumbling to the ground under a challenge from Veltman. The referee waves the game on before Arsenal recover possession and win a dangerous free-kick after Gross is adjudged to have fouled Saka.

26' Bissouma does brilliantly to dispossess Saka who attempts a one-two with Bellerin.

25' Arsenal look rather toothless going forward currently. They made a decent start but have been second best in the last 10 minutes.

23' What is Leno doing? From a backpass he is caught in possession and Brighton win a corner. The ball in is a good one and Bernardo rises highest but his header is blocked.

22' Smith Rowe brings down Veltman and Brighton have a chance to get the ball into the box. Gross is over it but his delivery from the right barely reaches the first man and the chance is gone.

20' The majority of the play is in the middle of the park as both sides continue to break the other down.

18' Bissouma does well to intercept a ball forward from Bellerin. The Malian has provided excellent defensive cover in these opening exchanges.

16' That's the best chance of the game so far. Brighton work the corner short before Bissouma whips a cross in. It's right on the head of Dan Burn but the full-back can't guide his free header on target.

16' It opens up for Mac Allister as Tierney is caught out of position. He has options but opts to take the shot on himself. It's well blocked but the hosts have a corner.

14' Arsenal attack with purpose for the first time. Tierney ghosts past Veltman before firing a ball into the middle. Dunk defends well to concede a corner.

13' Bernardo covers well as Bellerin and Saka attempt a one-two on the right flank. It's all very tentative so far.

11' The hosts enjoy a spell of possession but it's all in front of the Gunners. Eventually they work a chance when Bernardo fires a low cross in from the left wing and Jahanbakhsh gets on the end of it but blasts the ball over the bar.

9' Brighton are pressing Arsenal as they pass it around at the back but it's clear they have more than an eye on ensuring they don't leave too much space in behind them.

7' Xhaka picks out Martinelli with a long ball and the midfielder's header very nearly sets Aubameyang up, but Dunk does well to intercept and avert the danger.

6' Leno is way out of his box to deal with a ball over the top that was almost gathered by Bernardo. That was good goalkeeping by the German.

5' Martinelli finds Saka with a brilliant first-time flick. The youngster has space and attempts to pick out Aubameyang but Sanchez is out alertly to gather.

3' It's been a quiet start so far with Arsenal dictating most of the early running.

1' Referee Martin Atkinson blows his whistle and Brighton get the game underway.

Brighton won home and away league games against Arsenal last season. They’ve never won three in a row against the Gunners in league competition before; how they'd love to change that today. Kick-off is moments away!

While it’s all change for Burnley, Arteta has opted to field an almost identical side to the one that started against Chelsea. Aubameyang returns to full fitness and is preferred ahead of Lacazette up front. Elsewhere, Gabriel Magalhaes is still self-isolating after coming into contact with someone with Covid-19, while David Luiz and Willian are out through illness but have tested negative for coronavirus.

Potter has decided to make a massive six changes for this one. Only Bissouma keeps his place in midfield with Veltman, Propper and Bernardo joining the Malian in place of White, March and the injured Adam Lallana. Up top, Gross and Mac Allister will support Jahanbakhsh who starts through the middle with Potter perhaps taking the opportunity to rest Trossard, Welbeck and Maupay who line up as substitutes.

ARSENAL SUBS: Runar Alex Runarsson, Cedric Soares, Shkodran Mustafi, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Nicolas Pepe, Joseph Willock, Dani Ceballos, Eddie Nketiah, Alexandre Lacazette.

ARSENAL (4-2-3-1): Bernd Leno; Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding, Pablo Mori, Kieran Tierney; Mohamed Elneny, Granit Xhaka; Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Martinelli; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION SUBS: Ben White, Jason Steele, Solly March, Jayson Molumby, Aaron Connolly, Neal Maupay, Leandro Trossard, Danny Welbeck, Andi Zeqiri.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION (3-4-3): Robert Sanchez; Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk, Dan Burn; Joel Veltman, Yves Bissouma, Davy Propper, Bernardo; Pascal Gross, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Alexis Mac Allister.

But there’s no time to feel sorry for themselves as they welcome an Arsenal side fresh off an impressive 3-1 victory over Chelsea. The Gunners hadn’t won in seven going into the London derby, a run that had them perilously close to the relegation zone. However, with a little breathing room, Mikel Arteta will be hoping to make it back-to-back Premier League wins with a first victory at the Amex Stadium.

With both teams firmly in the bottom half of the table, there are a big three points up for grabs here. Brighton almost ended their five-game winless run in their last outing but had to settle for a point away to West Ham after the home side pegged them back twice. Sitting 16th isn’t a fair reflection of Graham Potter’s side who have performed far better than their 13-point tally suggests.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Premier League meeting between Brighton and Hove Albion and Arsenal from the Amex Stadium.

Man City to have three rounds of COVID-19 testing after outbreak in the squad

A number of first-team players are self-isolating after positive results led to Everton clash being postponed at short notice

Manchester City are set to carry out three rounds of COVID-19 tests ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea to try to keep control of the outbreak at the club.

City’s Premier League clash with Everton on December 28 was called off just four hours before kick-off after more members of the squad - believed to be three players - tested positive for the virus.

Kyle Walker, Gabriel Jesus and two staff members were already in quarantine, in accordance with government guidelines, after positive test results ahead of the victory over Newcastle on December 26.

City have shut down their first-team training ground at the City Football Academy for “an indeterminate period” following the outbreak.

Players and staff, who are not self-isolating, were pictured driving into the Etihad Campus on Tuesday morning for tests in their cars with results expected on Wednesday.

There are set to be a further two rounds of tests before Sunday with no decision yet over the possible postponement of the game at Chelsea or the Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United three days later.

Subsequent postponements would cause a logistical nightmare with City already trying to squeeze into two extra Premier League matches into a tight schedule as well as competing in domestic competitions and the Champions League.

The clash between Everton and City is the second Premier League fixture to be postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak, with Newcastle United's game against Aston Villa also called off earlier in December.

The Toffees have asked for full disclosure from the Premier League over why they decided to postpone the match at such short notice with Everton already starting their pre-match preparations.

A club source told Goal that City's sudden outbreak may have been contracted while in London on December 22 for the Carabao Cup quarter-final with Arsenal and are concerned it may be the highly-infectious variant of the disease.

Pep Guardiola’s team travelled to and from the capital, which is now under the government’s most stringent Tier-4 restrictions, on the day of the game to minimise risk. But they spent the afternoon at a hotel to prepare for the match.

Meanwhile, the Premier League has announced the highest number of positive cases since weekly testing began.

"The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 21 December and Sunday 27 December, 1,479 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19," a statement released by the organisation reads.

"Of these, there were 18 new positive tests. Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.”

Several fixtures in the English Football League have also been postponed over the festive period, with a total of seven games cancelled on Monday.

'Unfair footbal!' - Antonio Habas unhappy with Mumbai City's goal following defeat

The ATK Mohun Bagan boss was happy that the team ended the year on top of the ISL table...

ATK Mohun Bagan ended 2020 with a goalless draw against Chennaiyin on Tuesday and climbed to the top of the Indian Super League (ISL) table.

For the first time this season, Antonio Habas' side failed to score a goal in a match but the Spanish coach was not disappointed with the result as he felt that it was better to get one point than to lose all three.

"I am not disappointed. When you cannot win it is better not to lose. The team did not perform well but it is a draw. But at present, ATK Mohun Bagan are at the top of the table and we end the year 2020 being at the top," said the Spaniard.

Wing-back Prabir Das has not started in the last three matches and Habas explained that due to a change in formation, Manvir is being preferred over Das.

"We have been playing Manvir and the team is playing in a different system and formation. Prabir is a very important player for us and he will have his moment. We cannot play everyone in the first eleven. There will be injuries and other problems, you just have to choose the right player at the right moment."

Chennaiyin had quite a few open chances to break the deadlock and had tested the ATK Mohun Bagan defence on several occasions but the coach felt that too many fouls against the Mariners did not allow them to play well.

"We were losing too many balls. I think there were too many fouls against us and it was not possible to progress in the match. It was impossible to play after so many fouls," the Mariners boss signed off.

MLS, players agree to extend CBA talks 1 week

The goalkeeper has been an outstanding member of Timu ya Wananchi who are on top of the league table and are yet to lose a match

Young Africans' (Yanga SC) first-choice goalkeeper Metacha Mnata has been overlooked by Tanzania head coach Etienne Ndayiragijje in his African Nations Championship (Chan) squad.

Mnata has been one of the key players for Yanga in the current campaign, where they remain the only side yet to lose a game.

For the goalkeeping duties, the Burundian coach has picked Aishi Manula of Simba SC, Biashara United’s Dan Mgore and their Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC FC’s) counterpart Juma Kaseja.

Kaseja has maintained his position in the squad despite the rivalry posed by his younger compatriots over the years.

Bakari Mwanyeto, who was signed by Yanga from Coastal Union and has seamlessly stamped his authority on the first team, has been included.

Timu ya Wananchi signed the centre-back to replace Kevin Yondani and he has gone on to fill the position that the 35-year-old defender had at national level as well.

Mwamnyeto is likely to be partnered with Simba’s Erasto Nyoni at the tournament that will be held in Cameroon in January 2021.

In the striking department, John Bocco is the most familiar face and will likely be the man to lead the Taifa Stars' goal-hunting expedition.

Farid Mussa, another key figure at the Jangwani Street giants, has been named as well as Adam Adam of JKT Tanzania, who scored the first hat-trick in the ongoing Mainland Premier League season.

The selected players will join the camp from January 1 and will be involved in two friendly games against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tanzania Full Squad:

Aishi Manula (Simba SC), Juma Kaseja (KMC FC), Dan Mgore (Biashara United, Abdutwalib Mshery (Mtiwa Sugar), Shomari Kapombe (Simba SC), Israel Mwenda (KMC FC), Edward Manyama (Namungo FC), Yassin Mustapha (Young Africans),

Bakari Mwamnyeto (Young Africans), Erasto Nyoni (Simba SC), Aggrey Moris (Azam FC), Carlos Protas (Namungo FC), Said Ndemla (Simba SC), Baraka Majogoro (Mtibwa Sugar), Yussuf Mhilu (Kagera Sugar),

'Chennaiyin will score goals' - Csaba Laszlo unperturbed by scoring woes

The Chennaiyin boss revealed that Rafael Crivellaro has twisted his ankle...

Chennaiyin managed only a draw as against ATK Mohun Bagan in the 2020-21 Indian Super League (ISL) clash on Tuesday.

Scoring goals has been a major problem for the Marina Machans this season but coach Csaba Laszlo isn't too worried as his team is creating chances in front of goal.

"We again had chances to score two or three goals but this is fantastic if you have so many chances. I am confident that we will continue playing this kind of football we are playing and I am also confident that we will score goals.

"It is actually more difficult to create goal-scoring chances. It was generally a very good match, it was tactically good from my side. I am proud of the boys because playing this game just after two days is not easy."

Instead of focusing on the missed chances, Laszlo decided to pinpoint the positives from the game against ATK Mohun Bagan as he suggested that his team did a commendable job while defending against setpieces.

"Yes, we lost a chance to win but it is not just in this game. Unfortunately, even in the previous game, we had the same scenario. Otherwise, we have taken a step forward in terms of defending setpieces. We completely changed the shape and this worked very well today. The goals will come definitely," said the Chennaiyin manager.

Youngster Deepak Tangri was dropped from the lineup and Laszlo explained why he had to make such a harsh decision. He also heaped praise on Tangri and attacker Rahim Ali.

"It was hard to drop Deepak (Tangri). This was a tactical decision and not because he played badly. He has played in every single game this season and sometimes you need to give the players some rest. Also tactically Memo is a player who can pass the ball better. But for me, Deepak (Tangri) and (Rahim) Ali among the Indian players have developed the most and it is so nice to talk about it."

Skipper Rafael Crivellaro had to leave the pitch in the second-half following a rough challenge from Pronay Halder and the Romanian coach informed that the Brazilian has twisted his ankle.

"We have to see it (injury). He (Rafael Crivellaro) has twisted his angle and now we have to check how bad it is. We hope that it is nothing serious and he comes back soon. With the games coming up in every two or three days, I have to talk to Rafael and the doctors as well. It is always worrying if a player gets injured but I hope it will be alright."

Hazard to return from injury for Real Madrid against Elche, Zidane confirms

The Belgium star hasn't played since the end of November but will look to put another disappointing year behind him in his side's final game of 2020

Eden Hazard will make his comeback from injury as Real Madrid face Elche on Wednesday, Zinedine Zidane has confirmed.

Hazard hasn’t played since suffering a thigh strain in Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Alaves at the end of November.

The Belgian has only made six appearances in all competitions so far this season, and is yet to complete 90 minutes in 2020-21.

A combination of injuries and a positive coronavirus test have kept him out of action as his time at the Santiago Bernabeu continues to frustrate.

Hazard only managed 22 appearances last season and, while there have been flashes of brilliance, the 29-year-old has failed to replicate the form which earned him his €100 million (£88m/$112m) move from Chelsea in 2019.

But, with Madrid chasing down top spot in La Liga, Zidane says the Belgian will be back on the pitch – for a short while at least.

“Eden will be available tomorrow and we'd like him to just play a little bit,” Zidane said in his pre-match press conference.

“The other day (against Granada) we decided against it but we want him to play tomorrow because he's been back with the team for a while and we want to take advantage of Eden's ability.”

Zidane also says he feels the pain of out-of-favour pair Isco and Marcelo. Both have struggled for playing time this season and have been linked with moves away in the January transfer window.

“I feel their pain when they don't play because they are footballers, and they want to play just like everyone else,” Zidane said.

“They've both done so much here and it's a tough situation but it's the worst part of being a coach. It's my responsibility and that won't change until my final day. It's a difficult spell.”

With the Elche game coming as Madrid’s final match of 2020, Zidane took a moment to reflect on a tumultuous year.

"We're happy and feel grateful to be able to play football because there are people who are having a terrible time with the virus. I think about them a lot and let's hope this becomes just a bad memory and everything starts getting better soon.

“On a sporting level, we'll try and keep doing the best we can. We've got another long, tough year ahead.”

Madrid are level on points with city rivals Atletico at the top of La Liga, but Diego Simeone’s side have two games in hand.
