The missed second-half spotkick proved a turning poing as the U.S. booked a spot in the Gold Cup final
U.S. men's national team goalkeeper Matt Turner revealed what happened in the moments leading up to Qatar's game-changing missed penalty in Thursday's Gold Cup semi-final.
After a foul was called on James Sands, the U.S. faced a second-half penalty from Hassan Al-Haydos, who had scored a panenka from the spot earlier in the tournament.
But, after embracing the dark arts a bit by delaying the penalty, the U.S. was lifted by a miss from the Qatar star, helping kickstart an eventual 1-0 win that booked a spot in the Gold Cup final.
What did Turner say?
"I don't think that the words that were said will be good for a press conference," Turner said with a laugh, "but it's just normal back and forth. It was a big moment, obviously, and, in an international tournament, tensions were high and emotions were running high.
"For me, I just tried to let the guy know that I knew, that I've been watching his penalties. I think even beforehand I kind of mimicked his run-up as I was heading back to my goal to try to just mess with him a little bit. I waited as long as possible in the middle because I knew that he chipped down the middle earlier in this tournament, and then you just see what happens from there.
"Even though I sort of went the wrong way, I'd like to think that a combination of all things, my team delaying the shot, me holding my ground, all sort of led to that moment and it was a big moment for us."
Turner dazzles yet again
The New England Revolution goalkeeper put in another Man of the Match-worthy performance on Thursday, helping lead the U.S. to the 1-0 win.
Turner made two miraculous saves early on with the U.S. struggling to get into the game, the second of which was a near-impossible stop on a deflected shot.
With World Cup qualifiers looming, Turner's heroics certainly have him in the conversation to be the USMNT's No. 1 as he looks set to compete with Manchester City goalkeeper Zack Steffen.
Berhalter: It shows how much they wanted to win
In the moments after the penalty was called, Kellyn Acosta was one of several U.S. players displaying a bit of gamesmanship by delaying the kick.
As some mini-scuffles broke out and as Turner did his part in putting off Al-Haydos, the U.S. did just enough to unsettle the taker and, ultimately, change the game.
After the match, U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter said he didn't get a close enough look at what was going on from his spot on the sidelines, although he said he felt the penalty was soft on first glance.
"I didn't get a good look at it to comment fairly on it," Berhalter began, "but I think the guys were disappointed. To me, it was a potentially soft penalty kick. There was movement to go down but before there was very light contact.
"I'm going to watch it over again, and I think it shows how much they wanted to win. I got to see if we went overboard but, the guys wanted to win."

The midfielder is wanted by both the Old Lady and an unnamed Premier League side following his exploits at Euro 2020
Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has revealed that his club will soon enter talks with Juventus over the sale of Manuel Locatelli, while admitting the Italy midfielder is keen on a move to Turin.
Locatelli was one of the stars of Euro 2020 as the Azzurri took the title over England on penalties after an impressive tournament.
And he is now set to join the Serie A powerhouses after three years with Sassuolo.
What was said?
“Tomorrow we’ll have a direct contact with Juventus for Locatelli," Carnevali explained to Sky Sport on Thursday.
"He wants to join Juve. We’d be happy to sell Manuel to Juve... but they need to pay the right fee."
Despite Locatelli's preference, the Sassuolo chief affirmed that Juve were not the only team interested in his services.
"Arsenal made a bid to sign him and also a new English club is now in the race," he added.
Berardi to Leicester?
Locatelli is not the only Sassuolo player to have found himself the subject of transfer speculation this summer.
Team-mate Domenico Berardi, a fellow Euro 2020 winner, has attracted attention from Premier League side Leicester, but Carnevali is reluctant to dispense with two of his stars in a single window.
“We want to keep Berardi, he’s our top player," he stated.
"If we receive an important bid, we will discuss it and take a decision together with the player. But we’re not selling our stars later in August”.

The flamboyant Argentine jumped on the opportunity to remind the Rayados of a painful defeat on their own home turf
Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman took aim at the club's arch-rivals Monterrey, suggesting that their home ground should also be considered property of his club.
The former Argentina No. 1 is a firm favourite at Tigres thanks to his eccentric behaviour and often spectacular shot-stopping ability between the posts.
And he did not miss the opportunity to make fun of the Rayados, their neighbours and sworn enemies in the Nuevo Leon city.
What was said?
During an interview with TUDN, Guzman was put through his paces as journalist Aldo Farias grilled him on his knowledge of Monterrey and its surrounding areas.
One landmark that tripped up the Rosario native was in identifying from blurred images the Pastora Zoo, located next to Monterrey's Estadio BBVA home.
After some help from the presenters el Paton finally answered correctly that the attraction was indeed Pastora, prompting Farias to opine: "Since that December, La Pastora also belongs to Tigres and and amusement park as well."
Guzman fired back: "And that thing next door too, next to La Pastora," in reference to the Estadio BBVA.
An historic victory
The December in question refers to a famous Tigres victory over their rivals in 2017.
Both sides battled through to the Liga MX Apertura final, with Monterrey enjoying home advantage for the second, decisive leg.
After drawing 1-1 in the opener in Tigres' Estadio Universitario, the Felinos prevailed 2-1 away from home to take the title, with Chile international Eduardo Vargas and Francisco Meza sealing victory after Dorlan Pabon had fired the hosts into an early lead.
That Apertura crown is one of nine major titles that Guzman has lifted since joining Tigres in 2014 from boyhood club Newell's, the most recent of which came last year in the CONCACAF Champions League.
The goalkeeper has now made 329 career appearances in Liga MX - more than any other foreign-born player in league history.

'The work doesn’t stop now' - Van Dijk sends emotional message to Liverpool fans after injury return
The Netherlands international and team-mate Joe Gomez made their long-awaited comebacks after a nine-month injury lay-off
Virgil van Dijk says “the work doesn’t stop now” in an emotional message to Liverpool fans and his team-mates after making his long-awaited return from injury.
The Netherlands international has been sidelined for nine months with a serious knee injury but finally pulled the red shirt on again as a late substitute in the Reds’ friendly clash with Hertha Berlin.
Team-mate Joe Gomez also made his comeback after a similarly long lay-off, providing a double boost to manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the new season.
What did Van Dijk say?
Writing on Twitter after the game, Van Dijk said: “285 days ago, I started on a journey back towards playing. It’s hard to express how I am feeling, but it’s important to me that I say I feel blessed to have had the support of so many incredible people.
“The surgeon, my physios, coaches and staff who have been with me in my corner since day one. My team-mates for giving me energy and keeping my head up. The fans for their love, support and encouragement. And most of all, my family because without them, I’d be nothing. Thank you.
“The work doesn’t stop now. It’s only just starting. We keep going!”
Speaking about the duo's return, manager Jurgen Klopp said: "It was a nice feeling. Started immediately well and usually we all know that the fourth goal is a clear situation which saw and defend well. But that's it.
"I'm not sure, 260-something days for Virg and not much less for Joe they didn't play football, so it's nice to have them back. It was the first step, really important."
What happened against Hertha?
Santiago Ascacibar and Suat Serdar's strikes put Hertha 2-0 ahead early on at the Tivoli Stadion, only for Sadio Mane and Takumi Minamino to bring the Premier League side level before the break.
Substitute Stevan Jovetic restored Hertha’s lead shortly before Van Dijk and Gomez came onto the field in the 68th minute. The former Manchester City striker then scored his second and Hertha’s fourth with ten minutes remaining, turning sharply away from Van Dijk and Andy Robertson to leave both players on the floor before calmly finishing beyond goalkeeper Adrian.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled a goal back late on but could not prevent the defeat, though the return of Van Dijk and Gomez is likely to be the main takeaway from the game for Reds fans.
The bigger picture
Liverpool’s hopes of defending their Premier League title suffered a double blow in the space of just a few weeks last autumn, with Van Dijk suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Merseyside rivals Everton in October, before Gomez picked up a knee tendon injury on international duty with England just a few weeks later.
That left a huge hole at the heart of the Reds defence for the remainder of the campaign and likely played a role in their failure to keep their grip on the Premier League trophy.
It has been a long nine months, but to see both players back on the pitch will be a timely boost for Jurgen Klopp as he prepares his side for another title shot this term.

The 22-year-old will continue his career in Scotland after bringing an end to his 14-year stay in the Merseyside
Scottish Premiership club have announced the signing of Everton midfielder Beni Baningime on a three-year deal.
He joins the Jambos ahead of their opening league fixture against Celtic on Saturday.
Baningime sought a new challenge outside the Goodison Park after finding it difficult to secure regular playing time since he made his professional debut at the club in October 2017.
He spent the second-half of last season on loan in the Championship with Derby County where he made two league appearances. Prior to the loan move, the DR Congo-born midfielder did not play for Everton in the Premier League across three seasons (2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21).
The 22-year-old only played 12 games in total for Everton’s first-team, which include eight appearances in his debut Premier League campaign in the 2017-18.
Hearts’ sporting director Joe Savage believes Baningime’s addition will boost Robbie Neilson’s team as they aim to maintain their top-flight status this season.
“Both sides were really keen to get the deal done which is always a positive,” Savage told the club’s website.
“Beni has had a great schooling at Everton. He’s won the Premier League 2 twice with David Unsworth’s team and I know there is a really high standard down there, but he’s now ready to play first team football and we can give him that platform.
“We’ve stressed that we want to sign quality over quantity and in Beni I think we’ve got ourselves a quality player with the potential to do really well for Hearts.”
Hearts were promoted to the Premiership last season after they won the Championship title.
Baningime joined Everton at the age of nine and he rose through the club's youth ranks before making his professional debut in a League Cup match against Chelsea in 2017.
He is in line to make his Hearts debut against Celtic on Saturday but Neilson is undecided on whether to put him on the bench or in his starting XI.
“We still have a few things to iron out but he brings energy to the midfield, he is obviously of good stock, he has played six Premier League games and 12 games as a whole for a top team,” Neilson said per Edinburgh News.
“He brings energy, work ethic, moves the ball quickly. It’s an area we wanted to try and build on this season and hopefully he can do that for us.
“He has trained with us and he has played some games down there, was involved with the first team training before they went to Florida, so he is in a good place fitness wise.
“We will assess him ahead of the weekend. He will definitely be in the squad, it’s just whether he starts or not.”

Gerardo Martino's side has scored seven goals and conceded none on their way to the semi-finals and the team is a fairly settled one, so few, if any chances are expected.
Rogelio Funes Mori has three goals in this tournament - including one in the quarter-finals against Honduras - while Orbelin Pineda has shone in the absence of the injured Hirving Lozano.

With a total haul of 21 goals across their three Group F games - at an eye-watering average of seven per match - the Oranje look to be the form side to beat at Tokyo 2020.
Having swapped a selection of players off at the interval against China, they will likely revert to a similar lineup for the far sturdier test of the Stars and Stripes, with captain Sari van Veenendaal looking to make amends for the events at Parc Olympique Lyonnais two years ago.
Predicted Netherlands starting XI: Van Veenendaal; Wilms, Janssen, Nouwen, Van Dongen; Roord, Groenen, Van de Donk; Van de Sanden, Beerensteyn, Martens.

With just the one win from their Group G campaign, Vlatko Andonovski's pursuit of an Olympic gold to match the USWNT's World Cup crown has been a less-than-eye-catching journey by the team's usual standards.
Against another heavyweight contender, however, they will need to step up to the plate - and with talents like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan at the front of their attack, they will hope to hit a rich vein of form when they most need it.
Predicted USWNT starting XI: Naeher, O'Hara, Dahlkemper, Sauerbrunn, Dunn, Lavelle, Ertz, Horan, Press, Morgan, Rapinoe.

The Scottish manager was famed for his dressing room tirades - but on one occasion he picked the wrong Brazilian
Former Manchester United defender Fabio has revealed he was once inadvertently on the end of one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary ‘hairdryer’ treatments - after the Scot mistook him for his twin brother Rafael.
The 31-year-old admits he and Rafael have grown used to people getting them mixed up and often used to play tricks on United staff during training to confuse them further.
However, things took an unexpected turn when Ferguson launched into one of his dressing room diatribes, only to aim his anger at the wrong player.
What did Fabio say?
Fabio and Rafael joined United from Fluminense in February 2007, though they were unable to play for the club until they turned 18 the following summer.
They would go on to make 226 appearances for the club between them, the majority coming under the management of Ferguson, who retired in 2013.
People would regularly confuse one twin for the other, including a referee on one occasion, while Rafael would sometimes wear Fabio’s wedding ring to further bamboozle team-mates and members of staff.
“When we arrived from Brazil, there was no one who could tell us apart,” Fabio told the Athletic.
“You would arrive for training and, in the space of a few minutes, people would say ‘good morning’ twice. You had already said ‘good morning’ to that same person just a few minutes earlier and now they were saying it again.”
"Then came the misdirected hairdryer.
“I’d plead my innocence and he would get angrier for a second before he realised the entire dressing room was quiet because I was telling the truth,” added Fabio.
“‘Oh, f*cking hell’, he would say, and then everyone would just burst out laughing. Him, too.”
‘Steven Gerrard hated us’
Rafael also revealed that he and his twin brother attracted the ire of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, though he suspects it was mainly down to the intense rivalry between United and the Merseysiders rather than anything personal.
“Wayne Rooney told us that Steven Gerrard hated us,” said the defender, who now plays for Istanbul Basaksehir.
“He said that Gerrard told him on international duty, ‘Those twins, they are pri*ks!’.
"We never did anything to him but wear a different shade of red. I guess that’s all it takes. And to be honest, I understood what he meant. The feeling was mutual.”
Twins back United title challenge
Though it is several years since they left Old Trafford Fabio and Rafael both still hold the club in high regard.
“Manchester changed our lives,” said Fabio. “We were such young boys when we arrived. They really helped us. That’s why we are so grateful for everything they did for us.”
“The one thing about United is you have that feeling,” added Rafael. “It’s special, they treat you like family: ‘OK, you are one of us now, we are going to do everything to help you’. Even in bad moments, they always trusted us.”
Fabio left United in 2014 to sign for Cardiff, then managed by current Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was also the Brazilian’s reserve team manager at United.
The 31-year-old believes Solskjaer is building something special at Old Trafford and a first Premier League title since Ferguson's retirement could be on the cards.
“It’s hard for me even to find the right words to describe Ole,” said Fabio. “Honestly, I love the guy. He was the reason I went to Cardiff. He came to my house. ‘You’re going to help us stay up’, he said. I had so much confidence in him.
"It didn’t work out [Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League] but I don’t think they had the team to stay up and it doesn’t change the way I think about him.
“He learned a lot. You can see now that United are starting to be a family again. He’s the right man, he brings everyone together. And next season… champions! Champions! I really believe it. I’m telling you, something fantastic is happening. I can see the team growing these last two years. I’m very confident they can win the title now.”

An injury to Stina Blackstenius means that Rebecka Blomqvist may well keep her spot from the final group-stage win over New Zealand, along with a return for Fridolina Rolfo.

The gold medal gymnast opted out of competition in Tokyo in order to focus on her mental well-being
U.S. women's national team forward Christen Press has offered her support for Simone Biles after the star American gymnast opted out of competition at the Olympics to focus on her mental health.
Biles pulled out of the team competition after some early struggles and later announced she would not be participating in the individual competition.
Press has said that athletes must prioritise their own well-being, saying she uses meditation to improve her mental health.
What was said?
"I think it's been important for everybody to learn during this time, that we do have to choose ourselves and we do have to take care of ourselves, and that is how we take care of our society and represent our country in a beautiful way," Press told the media on Wednesday.
"I've spent a lot of time trying to develop a self love and self care that can power me through stressful times, and everybody manages that a little bit different.
"I have a twice-daily meditation practice that I rely on to decompress and to process things, and that's something that I do inside of a major tournament but outside of a major tournament, and it's really something that I do to balance myself day in, day out.
"Because, of course, people look at elite athletes and they say like, 'That's so stressful' or, 'That's so hard,' but all of our lives are stressful and we all have history and baggage, and I think as people knowing that it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves and to love ourselves first, [that] can really help us take care of each other in a more beautiful way."
What's next for the USWNT?
Press was speaking ahead of the USWNT's Olympic quarter-final on Friday against the Netherlands, which will be a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final.
The USWNT entered the Olympics as gold medal favourites but struggled through the group stage, earning just four points from three games.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, won two and drew one of their matches, scoring 21 goals in the process while conceding eight.

South Sudan have finished third in the Cecafa U23 Cup after defeating Kenya by a solitary goal.
Kariobangi Sharks attacker Dani Lual Gumanok scored the only goal to send the 10-man Emerging Stars home without a medal. The Stanley Okumbi-led charges had been reduced to a man less later into the game after Frank Odhiambo was sent off.
It was sweet revenge for the Sudanese who had lost 2-0 to Kenya in the group stage.
'I am glad for the exposure to young players'
The Kenya tactician went on to explain why his team was punished but stated they had gained experience after taking part in the annual competition.
"We created some scoring chances but failed to take them. But I am glad the young players have got some good exposure in this tournament," Okumbi told Cecafa official portal.
His opposite number Simon James Yor was delighted with his charges for giving their best to finish third. "The players represented the country well because they played their hearts out to finish in third position."
Journey to the play-offs
Kenya defeated Djibouti 3-0 in their opening group game before again claiming a win over South Sudan to advance to the last four. However, they fell to finalists Burundi 4-2 in post-match penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.
On the other hand, South Sudan beat Djibouti 2-0 to finish as the best runners-up to make it to the semis. They were defeated by Tanzania by a solitary goal. The Kim Poulsen-led charges came into the match as favourites, but it was their opponents who dominated the proceedings. Though, they failed to capitalise on the chances they created.
They were eventually punished in the 64th minute. South Sudan conceded a foul in the danger zone and Naftal Kevin Nashon stepped up. His effort was deflected into the net and it happened to be the winning goal.
On Friday, Burundi and Tanzania will be meeting in the final.

With two wins and a draw in Group E, Team GB have emerged among the favourites to challenge for medals in Tokyo, but face their toughest challenge yet under Hege Riise's watch.
Spearheaded by Ellen White up front however, with Caroline Weir in the frame to start in midfield, there will be no shortage of skilled matchwinners among a side looking to write their own piece of history in Japan.
Predicted Great Britain starting XI: Roebuck; Bronze, Williamson, Bright, Stokes; Scott, Ingle; Daily, Weir, Stanway; White.

Forwards | Kerr, Foord, Fowler, Gielnik, Raso, Simon |
Qualifying as one of the two best third-place sides from the group stage, the Matildas arrive in the last eight on the back of a cagey goalless draw with world champions the USWNT - and they'll be out to break a long-standing Olympic hoodoo.
They have never progressed further than the quarter-finals at the games - but with dynamite options like Sam Kerr up front, they clearly have the talent to deliver a big result against their marginally more fancied opponents.
Predicted Australia starting XI: Micah; Carpenter, Polkinghorne, Kennedy; Simon, Van Egmond, Yallop, Catley; Fowler, Kerr, Foord.

The Soweto heavyweights reached the final in the concluded season but failed to win
Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has advised Kaizer Chiefs to be patient if they are to win the Caf Champions League.
Amakhosi reached the final this season but did not get past the Red Devils, who were keen to defend their crown. The Egyptians needed three second-half goals to emerge 3-0 victors and win their tenth crown in the process.
It was the first time Chiefs were in the final, while the South African tactician has now won three continental titles with two different teams.
Kaizer Chiefs need serious introspection to win Caf Champions League
"To make a team, it takes a long time. It took Al Ahly seven years to win the Champions League," Mosimane told SAFM as quoted by iDiskiTimes.
"It took Mamelodi Sundowns, I don’t know how many years, maybe 43 or 45 to win the Champions League. It took Orlando Pirates I don’t know how many years to win the Champions League.
"So for Kaizer Chiefs to win the Champions League, there needs to be a serious, serious introspection in personal, in how the team should be directed."
It is about who you are
The tactician went on to advise the Soweto heavyweights that they have to have an identity and culture that they should stick to in order to stand a chance of winning.
"And also, you must have a coach that you want, you must have your coach. I don’t like this thing of people sending their CVs or applying for jobs, you must know who is your coach. Your coach must play the way you want. And sometimes you might lose games or whatever, but that is your coach," Mosimane continued.
"You can’t go and look for anybody because he just won a cup somewhere. There are so many people who have won cups in South Africa but they are no longer coaching now."
Chiefs finished eighth in the PSL last season and they are strengthening to ensure they challenge for the title next season.

It will be the first ever senior meeting between the two teams and the USMNT will be wary of the threat posed by CONCACAF's special guests as they attempt to book a place in the final.
The host team overcame Jamaica in the quarter-final, edging the Reggae Boyz in a 1-0 win, while Qatar won a five-goal thriller against El Salvador, winning 3-2.

Forwards | Arriola, Gioacchini, Zardes, Dike, Hoppe, Lewis, Cowell |
Walker Zimmerman withdrew from the squad with an injury ahead of the quarter-finals, with Henry Kessler called up as his replacement, while Cade Cowell joined too.
Gregg Berhalter is not expected to deviate too much, if at all, from the team that defeated Jamaica, but he may have a decision to make over whether to start Cristian Roldan and Gyasi Zardes, who had a positive impact from the bench.
Predicted USMNT starting XI: Turner, Vines, Robinson, Sands, Moore, Acosta, Lletget, Roldan, Arriola, Hoppe, Zardes.

Goalkeepers | Al Sheeb, Y. Hassan, Barsham |

Midfielders | Hatem, Waad, Boudiaf, Al-Ahrak, Madibo |
Forwards | Afif, Alaaeldin, Muntari, Al-Haydos, Mohammed, Abdurisag, Ali |
Almoez Ali is the tournament's leading scorer with four goals and struck twice in the quarter-final win over El Salvador, so the U.S. will have to keep a close eye on him.
Felix Sanchez will also look to the experience of Hassan Al-Haydos, while Abdulaziz has chipped in with three goals in the tournament.
Predicted Qatar starting XI: Barsham, Al-Rawi, Khoukhi, A. Hassan, Ro-Ro, Ahmed, Al-Haydos, Boudiaf, Hatem, Afif, Ali.

The USMNT and Qatar have never played each other in a senior international, so this is the first meeting between the teams at this level.
The Selecao have never won at the games, despite a fixed presence in the last four - and they'll hope to reach it again against Les Rouges
Brazil will aim to take a further step towards correcting their Olympic shortfall when they meet Canada for the third time this year in a quarter-final clash of the women's tournament at Tokyo 2020.

The Selecao arrive in the last eight having made the semi-finals in all but one of their prior appearances at the games, but are yet to taste gold - and they'll have to get past Les Rouges if they are to have any chance of a medal this time around too.

Midfielders | Quinn, Grosso, Scott, Fleming, Schmidt |
Forwards | Rose, Leon, Sinclair, Viens, Prince, Beckie, Huitema |
Having missed the draw with Great Britain that saw them pegged back by a late own goal, Les Rouges are almost certain to bring captain Christine Sinclair back into the lineup for their do-or-die clash.
Stephanie Labbe too looks set to keep her spot after missing part of the group stage through injury, while Jessie Fleming and Jordyn Huitema could both pick up starts after entering the fray at half-time against Team GB.
Predicted Canada starting XI: Labbe; Riviere, Buchanan, Gilles, Lawrence; Schmidt, Quinn; Huitema, Fleming, Leon, Sinclair.

Forwards | Debinha, Ludmila, Beatriz, Giovana, Andressa |
At 35, it may be the last chance that Selecao captain and legend Marta has to secure top prize at one of the biggest tournaments on the planet - and she is almost certain to start as Brazil go hunting another spot in the last four.
Giovana may well start after replacing Beatriz early on in the final group-stage victory over Zambia, and there could be a spot for July in the lineup too.
Predicted Brazil starting XI: Barbara; Santos, Poliana, Rafaelle, Jucinara; Andressinha, Julia, Angelina, Marta; Giovana, Ludmila.
