Transfer rumours: Pogba's PSG offer, Liverpool's Nunez interest

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – In the opening rounds of the MLS SuperDraft, the Colorado Rapids focused on bolstering its defense, consistent with the club’s earlier moves this offseason.

Colorado’s highest pick was 11th overall, which it traded to expansion franchise Nashville SC for $75,000 in General Allocation Money, and Colorado later traded that same amount to the Montreal Impact in exchange for right back Jeremy Kelly from the University of North Carolina. Montreal had originally selected Kelly with the ninth overall pick.

“I didn’t expect anything else to happen once I was picked by Montreal, but then my agent told me I had been traded to the Rapids,” Kelly told the Rapids website. “I’m excited to be with the Rapids.”

Kelly is expected to be a depth piece at right back behind Keegan Rosenberry. In Rosenberry’s first season with Colorado last year, he started all 34 games, logging 3060 minutes.

“(Kelly) is a tenacious defender,” executive vice president and GM Pádraig Smith said. “He is very smart and intelligent, plays with a lot of urgency and looks to play out of the back. That is very important to us. He also played in the midfield as well, so that showed his versatility.”

Later in the draft, Colorado selected defender Robin Afamefuna in the second round with the 37th overall pick. A product of Borussia Monchengladbach’s youth acadamey, Afamefuna was one of two UVA players to start all 17 regular season games for the Cavliers, who finished NCAA runners-up in 2019.

The MLS SuperDraft concludes with the final two rounds Monday, where Colorado holds the 63rd and 87th overall picks.

Anthony Hudson has been named the head coach of the U.S. Under-20 national team, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday.

It is Hudson’s first coaching job since being fired after a dismal spell with the Colorado Rapids, in which he was 8-26-9, including an 0-7-2 start to the 2019 season. He replaces Tab Ramos, who stepped down in late October to become the new Houston Dynamo coach.

“We’re excited to bring Anthony on-board to lead our U-20 men’s national team as it prepares for this summer’s Concacaf Championship,” U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said in a statement. “We’ve enjoyed great success with the U-20s over the last few cycles and the team has been instrumental in advancing players to our senior men’s national team. We believe that Anthony’s experience in the international game and at the club level make him a great choice to continue that success.”

Hudson has a wealth of international experience in a 12-year managerial career, having coached the Bahrain U-23 national team before leading the New Zealand senior national team that reached the inter-confederation playoffs for the 2018 FIFA World Cup before falling to Peru.

The 38-year old Seattle, Wash. native holds a UEFA Pro License.

“I’m very proud to be joining U.S. Soccer,” Hudson said. “It’s a really exciting time with the game’s rapid growth in this country and especially with so many talented young players coming through the ranks. I can’t wait to work with them and help develop these players into contributors at the highest level.”

Hudson, who will oversee all aspects of the U-20 program while managing the programming of the U-18 and U-19 teams, will hold his first training camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. this week.

The U-20 team will begin preparations for this summer’s Concacaf U-20 Championship, where it will face Costa Rica, Jamaica and St. Kitts and Nevis in the group stage.
