The Major League Soccer regular season is in its final month and Week 32 saw more teams book their playoff berths, others eliminated from postseason contention and Atlanta United and the New York Red Bulls still neck and neck down the stretch for the Supporters’ Shield.
The Montreal Impact jumped three spots after an impressive 3-0 win over Columbus Crew SC, while Real Salt Lake dropped three spots following a 4-1 loss at home to the Portland Timbers.
The Major League Soccer Power Rankings are created by averaging the rankings submitted by a committee of Pro Soccer USA’s editor and writers.
(1) New York Red Bulls (20-7-5, 65 points): Bradley Wright-Phillips became the first player in league history to score 20 or more goals in three different seasons in a 3-0 victory over the Earthquakes, the Red Bulls first win in San Jose since 2003. (2) Atlanta United (20-6-6, 66 points): Atlanta maintained a one-point lead in the Supporters’ Shield race, but lost influential Miguel Almiron to a hamstring injury in a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution. (3) FC Dallas (16-6-9, 57 points): FC Dallas extended their lead atop the Western Conference to four points after a 2-0 win over Orlando City SC. Maxi Urruti set up goals by Santiago Mosquera and Victor Ulloa. (4) Sporting Kansas City (15-8-8, 53 points): Johnny Russell scored the late equalizer in a contentious 1-1 home draw with the LA Galaxy. (6) Seattle Sounders FC (15-11-5, 50 points): The Sounders inched closer to clinching a playoff berth with a comprehensive 4-0 home win over the Houston Dynamo Monday night. (5) Los Angeles Football Club (15-8-8, 53 points): Adama Diomande struck for a brace to pace LAFC to a 3-0 win over Colorado that clinched a playoff berth. (8) Philadelphia Union (15-12-5, 50 points): The Union clinched a playoff berth in an emphatic 5-1 home win over Minnesota United FC. Fafa Picault led the way with two goals and an assist. (7) D.C. United (11-11-8, 41 points): Wayne Rooney struck for a brace to lift D.C. United to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. The Black-and-Red can move above the playoff line when they host FC Dallas Saturday. (11) LA Galaxy (12-11-9, 45 points): It’s now three straight games without a defeat for the Galaxy, who are one point below the playoff line in the West with two games remaining. (13) Montreal Impact (13-15-4, 43 points): Saphir Taider had a hand in all three goals in a 3-0 win over the Columbus Crew that kept the Impact above the playoff line in the West. (12) Portland Timbers (14-9-9, 51 points): Sebastian Blanco had two goals and one assist in a 4-1 thumping of Real Salt Lake Saturday night. (9) Columbus Crew SC (13-10-9, 48 points): Only the Colorado Rapids have scored fewer goals this season than the Crew, who dropped to fifth in the East after a 3-0 loss in Montreal. (10) Real Salt Lake (13-12-7, 46 points): RSL’s lead above the playoff line is a precious one point after a 4-1 home loss to the Portland Timbers. (14) New York City FC (15-9-8, 53 points): NYCFC’s lead in third place is just three points over the Philadelphia Union heading into the final two games of the regular season. The teams meet on Decision Day at Yankee Stadium. (17) Vancouver Whitecaps FC (12-12-7, 43 points): Russell Teibert and Kei Kamara scored for the Whitecaps in a win at Toronto that moved them to within three points of the playoff line. (15) Toronto FC (9-16-6, 33 points): It became official Saturday at BMO Field as the defending MLS Cup champions were eliminated from playoff contention after losing to the ‘Caps. (18) Houston Dynamo (9-14-8, 35 points): The Dynamo were also knocked out of playoff contention with a 4-1 defeat at Seattle on Monday night. (16) Minnesota United FC (11-17-3, 36 points): After back-to-back wins over Portland and NYCFC, the Loons weren’t competitive in a 5-1 loss in Philadelphia on Saturday. (19) Chicago Fire (8-17-7, 31 points): The Fire made D.C. United earn the three points, jumping in front on a goal by Raheem Edwards before a Rooney brace led the hosts to a 2-1 win. (20) New England Revolution (8-12-11, 35 points): The Revs are still alive —technically — but they’ve lost consecutive games and have won just once in their last 14 games. (21) Colorado Rapids (6-19-6, 24 points): The Rapids have lost seven straight games, and have been outscored 22-1 during that stretch. (22) Orlando City SC (7-19-4, 25 points): The Lions winless streak stretched to 11 games — their longest of the season — following a 2-0 loss to FC Dallas. (23) San Jose Earthquakes (4-20-8, 20 points): The Quakes lost to the Red Bulls, 3-1, to drop their sixth straight game. But there’s a light at the end of the 2018 tunnel with the appointment of former Chivas Guadalajara boss Matias Almeyda as the new head coach on Monday.Pro Soccer USA’s writer Dylan Butler contributed to this report
