Brazil and Argentina's World Cup qualifier was thrown into chaos on Sunday when health authorities attempted to detain several members of the visiting team, causing the game to be suspended.

Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were cleared to play the World Cup qualifier despite being accused of falsifying travel information upon their entry to Brazil, with mandatory quarantine and deportation advised by the Brazilian government for the trio and reserve Emiliano Buendia. 

The match had barely passed five minutes when scores of officers stormed the pitch, to the incredulity of both teams. 

What happened? 

The game in Sao Paulo's Arena Corinthians kicked off as scheduled on Sunday, with Brazil out for revenge after July's Copa America final reverse. 

Argentina's Premier League trio had travelled with the rest of the squad to the stadium earlier in the day in spite of Brazilian health authority Anvisa's statement forbidding them from partaking in any activities and ordering immediate isolation before leaving the country. 

With five minutes gone, a number of plain-clothed police and health officers suddenly entered the playing surface to apprehend Martinez, Romero, Buendia and Lo Celso. 

"It was necessary to keep our sanitary protocol," said Antonio Barra Torres, the head of the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (via Rede Globo). "We called the federal police, that went to the hotel and we found out that they had already left for the Stadium. The rest is what you're watching live."

They were prevented from doing so by the players' Argentina team-mates, causing an unseemly scuffle as the game was halted. 

Argentina captain Lionel Messi promptly led his side back down the tunnel to the dressing rooms, and CONMEBOL confirmed the action would not re-commence. 

Messi did emerge a few minutes later to consult with his Brazil counterparts, most of whom remained on the Arena Corinthians turf.

Health officials say they are still after the trio.

Why were the players pursued? 

The wanted trio and Buendia came from the United Kingdom, which is one of the countries on Brazil's own red list. 

Under national law, foreign travellers from the country must complete 14 days' quarantine once they have landed. 

The Argentine Premier League contingent, however, only declared that they had been to Caracas, the site of the Albiceleste's last World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, and did not reveal to immigration and health authorities that they had been in the UK. 

While Martinez, Romero, Buendia and Lo Celso had received dispensation from their clubs to leave England other CONMEBOL nations were not so lucky, with Brazil losing nine of their squad for these qualifiers as a result of the division's refusal to release players to red list countries. 

Victory over the Central African Republic will resuscitate their bid to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup, according to Liberia Football Association chief Gologo Ben Garkpah.

The Lone Star made a losing start en route Qatar 2022 after bowing 2-0 to Nigeria at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, on Friday.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half double powered the Super Eagles past Peter Butler’s side who put up a decent performance in the second 45 minutes.

As Liberia step up preparations for Monday’s fixture against the visiting Wild Beasts, handled by coach Raoul Savoy, the LFA official claims Butler’s men have moved on from their setback against the three-time African kings.

He is also bullish about his country’s World Cup dreams, stating victory CAR will kindle that mission.

“We've already lost the game and the lads know that it's over and they have to move on with life,” Garkpah told Goal.

“The 2-0 defeat to the Super Eagles is not the end of the road for us as well as not the end of the world.

“We have the Central African Republic to play tomorrow [Monday] and we are concentrating on picking all the maximum points.

“We want to win and to achieve this have regrouped and forgotten about the sad memories at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.”

“We know Nigeria will have a difficult trip on the Island to Cape Verde, so all we need to do is try to win CAR and blow the groupwide open,” he continued.

“We have the qualities to do so. It's an away game on paper because CAR and Liberia agreed to play in Cameroon. Our opponents are also away because Cameroon isn't their home.

“The mood in the camp is very high and a win of any margin will ignite our spark of qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

“Coach Butler might make one or two changes especially the goalkeeping area and try to adopt a little positive mindset against CAR.”

Liberia’s closest attempt at qualifying for the quadrennial football fiesta was in 2001, when they lost out on a ticket for South Korea and Japan 2002 to Nigeria by just one point in the qualification tournament. 

England youngster Bukayo Saka was over the moon with his birthday goal at Wembley on Sunday, as the Three Lions made short work of Andorra to continue their perfect start to World Cup qualifying. 

Gareth Southgate's men ran out 4-0 winners in a one-sided match, with Jesse Lingard netting twice and Harry Kane scoring from the penalty spot before Saka notched the final goal of the afternoon. 

It made for a happy day for the Arsenal star, whose last experience of Wembley turned into a nightmare. 

What was said?

Saka was one of three England players who missed penalties in July's shoot-out as Italy beat the hosts to the Euro 2020 title. 

The Arsenal man was given a rousing reception on his return to Wembley, which left him feeling good after the abuse he received following the final. 

"The perfect birthday present for me. I am really happy we got the win and I can celebrate my birthday with this," he told ITV.

"I am really happy with the reception everyone gave me, it shows how proud they are of me and that meant a lot. It means a lot, it really made a difference for me. Even now I can hear fans chanting my name. It means everything to me that I know they support me.

"This is what I dream about, playing at Wembley in front of my family and this crowd and scoring on my 20th birthday."

Southgate's view

England boast a perfect 15 points from 15 so far in Group I of the UEFA qualifying competition, nine points clear of closest rivals Albania. 

Speaking after the match, England boss Southgate admitted he was also thrilled with the treatment afforded to Saka from the stands. 

"He got a fabulous reception before the game and during the game. It is lovely, you can see how popular he is with the team as well," Southgate told ITV. "I hope closure if it was needed but I don't think there is a player in that dressing room who thinks anything but positively about what he did all summer."

Harambee Stars coach Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee has maintained they are still in the race to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup despite picking up their second successive draw against Rwanda in the qualifiers on Sunday.

Kenya went into the game against Amavubi after drawing 0-0 against Uganda in their Group E opener and they took the lead courtesy of captain Michael Olunga in the 10th minute, but the hosts fought back and managed to equalise courtesy of Abdul Rwatubyaye in the 20th minute.

Despite starting their campaign with two draws, Mulee, who in an interview before Kenya took on Uganda vowed to help the team grace the competition in Qatar, has maintained they are still in the race to snatch the slot.

What did Mulee say?

“It is our second game and Rwanda is a good side and we have seen the way they played in the second half, they enjoyed the pace and possession but I think we scored the first goal then we lost concentration and conceded from a corner to allow them into the game,” Mulee told Goal after the game.

“But we also looking into the game created a lot of chances mostly from our captain, yes he scored a goal but he also had other opportunities to score a second goal and we can blame this draw on lack of utilising our chances in this game.

“Otherwise it is not fair because looking at both sides not having won their first games and coming back to Rwanda and we pick up a point, it is tight but we are still in the race for the World Cup, it is just not done yet, so we are still on, two games played and we go to Morocco for the Mali game and that will determine which way it will go.”

What next for Harambee Stars?

The 53-year-old tactician continued: “We will also wait for the game tomorrow [Monday] when Mali play against Uganda, we will also wait for that result to see what happens because with two games and two points it is not a bad start.

“We would have loved to win the games but we did our best and now we have to plan on how to face Mali back-to-back, we go to Morocco and then they come back to Nairobi.

“We are ready to face them in Nairobi but let us wait and see what happens in the first meeting in Morocco first.”

The Cranes will face Mali, who beat Rwanda 1-0 in their opener, at St Mary’s Kitende Stadium in Kampala.

Four Argentina players have been ordered to go into quarantine and then leave Brazil just hours before the two nations clash in Sunday's World Cup qualifier. 

Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso travelled with their nation for the September international round despite the Premier League's restrictions on travel. 

Now they face missing out on the upcoming repeat of July's Copa America final triumph due to irregularities. 

What was said? 

"Following the report that four Argentine players entered Brazil in defiance of the country's sanitary regulations, allegedly giving false information to the Brazilian health authority, Anvisa met with representatives of the Health Ministry and Disease Control Coordination of Sao Paulo's State Health Department," a statement explained on Sunday. 

"After meeting with health authorities it was confirmed, following revision of the passports of the four players involved, that the athletes broke the rules for the entry of travellers on Brazilian soil, which decrees that foreign travellers who have been in the United Kingdom, South Africa, Northern Ireland and India in the last 14 days are banned from entering Brazil. 

"The players in question declared they had not been in any of those four restricted countries in the last 14 days. They arrived in Brazil on a flight from Caracas which landed in Guarulhos (Sao Paulo). Then, unofficial reports came to Anvisa over alleged false declarations from the travellers. 

 "Anvisa considers the situation a severe health risk, and has therefore instructed local health authorities to impose immediate quarantine measures on the players, who are banned from engaging in any activity and will be unable to remain in Brazilian territory." 

The bigger picture

Argentina's quartet were among the few Premier League players able to arrive in South America, with Brazil losing no fewer than nine players as a result of the Premier League's decision not to release travellers bound for countries on the UK's red list. 

Martinez and Lo Celso both started in Thursday's 3-1 victory over Venezuela in Caracas, with Buendia on the bench and Romero hoping to return on Sunday after serving a one-match suspension. 

Reports of the quartet's infraction emerged following their arrival in Brazil, although CONMEBOL maintained on Saturday that their presence was permissable as they formed part of the national team's bubble. 

"Our tournaments are played inside a sanitary bubble which excuses delegation from going into quarantine for 72 hours," CONMEBOL general secretary Gonzalo Belloso told Clarin. 

"The World Cup qualifiers are played with the same model. We have told the Brazilian authorities and the CBF [Brazilian Football Confederation] who are the hosts and must guarantee the game is played." 

Following Anvisa's statement, police were seen outside the Argentina team hotel in Sao Paulo as negotiations continued at a furious pace just two hours before the game was scheduled to kick off at Arena Corinthians.

A first-half double from Kelechi Iheanacho propelled the three-time African champions past the Lone Star at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Coach Gernot Rohr had made it clear that his team will do all it takes to avoid a tortuous route to Qatar 2022. Having this in mind, they would be aiming to pick up all three points against the Blue Sharks.

Uganda midfielder Khalid Aucho is optimistic the team will bounce back from the 0-0 draw against Kenya to get a victory at home against Group E leaders Mali.

The East Africa nation will be hosting the West Africans in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Monday. This is after the Eagles collected maximum points in Wednesday's home encounter against Rwanda, and will definitely be aiming at making it two wins in a row.

'Coach will give us more tactics against Mali'

"The game we played against Kenya was not bad because we were away, so we made sure that if we do not win at least we should get a draw so that we can fight for three points at home against Mali on Monday," Aucho told reporters as quoted by Sports Nation.

"Now we are back, the coach [Sredojevic] will give us more tactics that we shall use against Mali. All the players are okay, no one was seriously injured, but there were some minor injuries but I think by Monday everyone will be fine.

Monday's match will be played at the St Mary's Stadium in Kitende.

What to work on ahead of Monday game 

Meanwhile, coach Sredojevic, who is commonly referred to as Micho, pointed out on where he will be focusing on after the draw away to Kenya.

"I was not impressed with the way we were holding the ball and our numbers when facing the ball. It is something that we need to go and work on," Micho told Goal. 

"There are positives we need to pick up and upgrade, and there are negatives that we need to correct because we are playing against probable favourites [Mali]. I also regret the fact that a few of our players could not report due to various reasons.

Jesse Lingard paid tribute to new Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring England's opening goal against Andorra.

Following his strike, the winger performed Ronaldo's trademark celebration to mark the event - although with his own "JLingz" hand signals included.

Lingard had opened the scoring for the Three Lions against the minnows with a shot converted from the penalty spot after good work initially from Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka.

Ronaldo's Man Utd return

Ronaldo moved back to Man Utd shortly before the transfer window, with the Red Devils completing a dramatic swoop for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to deny Manchester City his signature.

Lingard was one of several players to celebrate the event, posting on his Instagram timeline with a simple: "Welcome home."
