Pep Guardiola provides update on Ruben Dias injury

The Portuguese star has played 16 matches against Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and Bayern Munich...

After a gap of 12 years, Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Manchester United leaving Serie A giants Juventus. The Red Devils made a bid to bring the 36-year-old back to Old Trafford, where he played between 2003 and 2009, for an initial £13 million (€15m/$18m) with add-ons of up to £7m (€8m/$9m).

During his last stint at Man United, Ronaldo won three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, two League Cups and a Champions League title. He also won a host of individual awards namely the Ballon D'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Now with Ronaldo in their ranks, Manchester United will hope to end their city rivals Manchester City's dominance in the Premier League in recent times. Since former FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola joined them, the Cityzens have won three Premier League titles in the last five seasons, four League Cups and one FA Cup.

Being a Real Madrid player from 2009 to 2017, Ronaldo has a long history of facing Pep Guardiola who used to coach Madrid's fierce rivals FC Barcelona from 2008 to 2012. The Portuguese talisman faced the Spanish mastermind on several occasions in Spain and also met him twice in the Champions League when Guardiola managed Bayern Munich.

In fact, the very first time Ronaldo and Guardiola came face-to-face was in Ronaldo's last match in his first stint at Manchester United. The English giants had faced Guardiola's Barcelona in the final of the 2008/09 Champions League and lost 0-2.

One of the best players in the world, Ronaldo has an incredible record against almost any opposition he has faced in his long career, but when it comes to facing Guardiola, the star player does not enjoy a great record. So far in his career, Ronaldo has faced a Guardiola on 16 occasions and has managed to win just four times and has lost on eight occasions. In those 16 matches, he has managed to score seven times.

The two Manchester rivals are set to meet each other for the first time in the ongoing 2021/22 season on November 6 at the Old Trafford and Ronaldo will look to better his record against Pep Guardiola.

Peter Muduhwa: Simba SC sign Zimbabwe defender from Highlanders FC

Ronaldo was first signed by Manchester United as a young winger in 2003 and left the club to ply his trade for Real Madrid in 2009....

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo made a sensational return to Manchester United from Italian giants Juventus -- where he spent three years -- on Friday.

He returns to the Premier League giants after leaving for Real Madrid in 2009. He made his bones at United, after he was signed by the club in 2003 as a young winger. He evolved as one of the finest footballers in the world under Sir Alex Ferguson's guidance before leaving the club. Ronaldo had raked up 118 goals from 292 appearances across competitions during his first stint with the Red Devils.

The Portuguese talisman also helped the club win several trophies during his initial stint.

Having made his way back to United, the 36-year-old will boost the club's attack which already has some firepower, featuring the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Daniel James besides the experienced Edison Cavani.

Before that, let's take a look at all the trophies he won in his initial stint at United

Which trophies have Cristiano Ronaldo won at Manchester United?

Ronaldo helped the club win nine trophies in his first stint. The star forward was a crucial part of the squad which won the Premier League titles in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. He also won the Champions League with United in 2007-08.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping Ronaldo's second coming at United will help the club end their league title drought that stretches back to 2013.

Carvajal: Hopefully Mbappe can join Real Madrid before the transfer window closes

Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal is hopeful that he will be able to welcome Kylian Mbappe to the club before the summer transfer window closes.

Los Blancos squeezed past Betis on Saturday with the help of a Carvajal volley to bounce back from their 3-3 draw against Levante last weekend.

And their chances of regaining the Primera Division might improve further should they succeed in landing the Paris Saint-Germain forward in the coming days.

What was said?

"Hopefully Mbappe can join us before the window closes, he's a great player and would be some reinforcement," the right-back explained after the final whistle.

As well as Carvajal, Madrid director Emilio Butragueno and coach Carlo Ancelotti also spoke out on the Mbappe situation, although both men preferred not to directly address the pursuit.

"We understand that the fans are expectant, all the media are talking about it, but we have nothing to say," Butragueno stated.

Ancelotti added: "Let's talk about the game, the rest is an issue for the club."

The bigger picture

While Mbappe is a long-term transfer target for Madrid, the Spanish giants have stepped up their pursuit since Lionel Messi completed his blockbuster move to PSG.

Goal understands that the club have tabled a €170 million (£146m/$200m) bid for the forward, a tempting figure for his current employers given that he is out of contract next June.

The departure of Alvaro Odriozola on loan to Fiorentina has freed up squad space for his potential arrival, while Eden Hazard has also been put up for sale in order to fund the hefty transfer fee.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, though, continues to harbour hope that his star striker will stay and form a scintillating partnership with Neymar and Messi

"He hasn't told me anything about wanting to leave PSG," the Argentine told reporters when quizzed on Mbappe's future, while assuring that he was in line to play in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash with Reims.

Borussia Dortmund interested in Callum Hudson-Odoi loan despite Chelsea reluctance

The winger has struggled to nail down a starting spot under Thomas Tuchel since the head coach's arrival

Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi on loan - but the Blues are currently refusing to let the England international head through the exit door, Goal understands.

The winger, a thrice-capped Three Lions starlet, has struggled to nail down a starting spot under Thomas Tuchel, having previously impressed under predecessor Frank Lampard.

It had appeared that the 20-year-old was set to remain at Stamford Bridge across the 2021-22 campaign, but now a spate of new suitors have emerged for his signature as the transfer window deadline looms.

What has happened?

Though no formal approach has been made, Bundesliga heavyweights Dortmund are the latest major European side to show an overt interest in bringing Hudson-Odoi into their ranks.

Marco Rose's side are thought to be at the top of a list of potential suitors vying to turn the winger's head as the final few days of the summer window tick down.

But any bid is likely to be met with fierce resistance, with Tuchel of the opinion that he should stay in west London with the Blues.

Hudson-Odoi snubs Young Lions call

Tuchel has been left further bemused by - though respectful of - the decision by the 20-year-old to refuse the call to represent England's under-21 side during the international break.

Having won his last cap for the senior side in 2019, Hudson-Odoi has been passed over again by Gareth Southgate for September's Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Just how the choice to pull out of Lee Carsley's plans will alter his relationship with the Three Lions set-up remains to be seen, though there are fears that it could strain his future.

The bigger picture

Chelsea's determination to keep Hudson-Odoi suggests their belief that he has a key part to play as they go in search of further silverware under Tuchel this term.

Having already claimed the Super Cup in a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Villarreal, the Blues will be focused on domestic and European concerns - plus the Club World Cup - over the 2021-22 campaign.

They have made few purchases across the summer, with Romelu Lukaku the headline new recruit, with the lack of activity volume speaking to their satisfaction with players such as Hudson-Odoi already in their ranks.

Musa and Benatia’s Fatih Karagumruk bow to 10-man Besiktas

The Super Eagles captain played from start to finish but could not prevent the Black Red from suffering their first defeat of the 2021-22 campaign

Fatih Karagumruk’s impressive start in the 2021-22 Turkish Super Lig season came to an end following a 1-0 defeat to Besiktas on Saturday night.

Parading Nigeria’s Ahmed Musa and Morocco’s Medhi Benatia, the Black Red were unable to overcome Sergen Yalcin’s men - who played with ten men for majority of the second half.

Both teams came into the game having settled for 0-0 draws their last time out. For Karagumruk, they travelled to Istanbul’s Vodafone Park – hoping to extend their unbeaten run.

However, it was the hosts who imposed their authority from the blast of referee Cuneyt Cakir’s whistle.

Their tenacity paid off on the half hour mark courtesy of new signing Alex Teixeira. The 31-year-old Brazilian fired an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano from outside the goal area.

Fuelled by their lead, Besiktas probed further in search of their second goal but they bungled several scoring opportunities despite creating numerous chances.

Three minutes into the second half, their lead suffered a massive setback as Salih Ucan was given the marching orders for a second cautionable offence.

Playing with just ten men, manager Yalcin had to change tactics and opted for a more defensive play.

Even at that, the visiting side failed to get the equaliser in the remaining minutes of the match as the Black Eagles ran out will all three points at stake.

Super Eagles captain Musa and Morocco international Benatia were on parade from start to finish for Francesco Farioli’s team.

For Besiktas, Algeria international Rachid Ghezzal saw every minute of action while Congolese defender Fabrice Nsakala – who collapsed against Gaziantep FK – was not dressed for action by manager Yalcin.

With this defeat, Karagumruk dropped to tenth in the Turkish elite division log after accruing just four points in three games, while Besiktas occupy the summit with seven points from the same number games.

Musa is expected to join the rest of Gernot Rohr’s squad for September’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers as Nigeria try Liberia and Cape Verde for size.

Fatih Karagumruk would be aiming to bounce back to winning ways when they square up against Adana Demirspor on September 11.

Highlands Park's Manyathela keen to achieve ex-Orlando Pirates striker Lesley's dream

New Tusker FC signing Charles Momanyi has appreciated the influence Gor Mahia had on him when it comes to coping with pressure and playing fearlessly.

The experienced defender joined the newly crowned Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions recently, signing a two-year deal. He believes the bond between the new players and the existing ones will be stronger as he aims at winning a league title with the Ruaraka-based side.

'It is all about teamwork'

"I feel good to join this great team, Tusker is a big team in Kenya which have won numerous trophies just like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards," Momanyi told the club's media department.

"First I would like to thank Gor Mahia because they gave me a chance to play for a big team [from Kakamega Homeboyz]. Tusker are also a big team which is an advantage to me because I don't have any pressure nor fear.

"I know how to absorb any pressure that might come my way."

What is Momanyi's target in the Caf Champions League?

After securing the right to represent Kenya in the continental assignment, the Brewers' first assignment will be to get past AS Arta of Djibouti. What does the former K'Ogalo player want to achieve?

"Football is all about teamwork. Tusker have good players; those who have been there have won the league, and there are others who have just joined like me," Momanyi continued.

"So we will be joining hands, sharing the experience, and helping the team achieve the set targets. My main target is to win the league with Tusker.

"Coming to the continental level we want to give our best although it will not be easy. Working together as a unit will help us go far in the competition."

Tusker have so far confirmed the signing of Patrick Matasi, Kalos Protus Kirenge, and Ibrahim Joshua. More signings are expected in the next couple of days.

'Mumbai City deserved to win the League Winners Shield' - Sergio Lobera elated with maiden title win

That's all from a stunned Allianz Stadium today, so thanks for joining us and goodbye!

A short burst of enthusiasm at the outset seemed to display Juve's intent to move on from the Ronaldo era as soon as possible - however, a hangover has ensued and last season's woes have not been resolved yet. They may be glad to depart for the international break.

Empoli's small following erupt with delight, as they conquer Juve in their own back yard! The visitors actually faced little real threat from a toothless home side in Turin. Meanwhile, Max Allegri and company are poised for a reaction from both their fans and the media - starting the season with just one point from two apparently straightforward fixtures.

90' + 5' FULL-TIME: JUVENTUS 0-1 EMPOLI

90' + 3' JUVE'S LAST CHANCE? Finally, Juventus force a presentable opportunity, but Locatelli's left-footed effort from just inside the area is scuffed just wide of Vicario's right post. Surely there's no time to equalise now?

90' + 1' After a brief spell of time-wasting by their opponents, Juventus break forward through Bernardeschi, but the Italy winger loses the ball too easily.

88' Bonucci heads well over from a whipped corner kick, as the whistles start to cascade down from the terraces. The Old Lady's supporters are not happy!

86' Neat interplay around the box nearly gets Juve in on goal, but Empoli have eleven men behind the ball now and are showing admirable resolve.

84' There are glum faces all around on the Juventus bench, as they anticipate a miserable defeat to add to last week's draw. Time is slipping through their fingers, as Empoli stand firm.

77' Locatelli is increasingly involved, but Juventus do not seem to be banging down the Empoli door at this stage. The Bianconeri need inspiration from somewhere.

75' Allegri's promptings from the technical area are taking on an increasingly manic tone. He is aware of the criticism he will endure if this situation isn't rectified in the final 15 minutes.

70' SO CLOSE! Kulusevski wriggles free in the area, but his driven cut-back is forced just wide of the left post by Locatelli. The substitutes have breathed fresh life into an ailing attack.

68' Bernardeschi has a shot blocked, then Cuadrado is denied by the safe hands of Vicario. Maybe Juventus can finally find the final-third composure they have been sorely lacking?

65' Locatelli looks to be warming up for another cameo appearance.

64' Cutrone has played 25 consecutive matches without scoring - for Empoli, Valencia, Fiorentina and Wolves - equalling his worst career streak. An overdue goal today would certainly welcomed by the Empoli tifosi!

61' Szczesny punches clear another Empoli corner, but the Azzurri still exert a brief period of pressure which concludes with a wild strike over and into the stands.

59' Cuadrado is hacked down on the right flank, but only a free-kick is awarded. Dybala attempts to shoot from a difficult angle, and the ball cannot dip enough in time to dive below Vicario's bar, curling just over.

58' Dybala creates a little space on the edge of the box, but Stojanovic's close attentions cause him to lean back and lift his attempt over the crossbar.

55' Alex Sandro narrowly misses the corner flag with a wayward cross from the left - summing up his delivery so far today.

53' Bajrami does well to win a corner, which is punched decisively clear by Szczesny. Empoli show no signs of retreating so far.

51' Cuadrado's cross from deep on the right is headed well over the bar by Rabiot - not even a half-chance really.

49' Szczesny is forced to tip over a speculative effort from Bajrami, conceding a corner which Empoli waste.

47' Haas and Dybala trade shots at goal, as the action is immediately end to end to start the second half!

46' We are back under way at an anxious Allianz Stadium, with a change up front for Juventus perhaps helping to switch the momentum of this game.

Following Ronaldo's hasty exit, returning Bianconeri boss Allegri really needs a dramatic turnaround after the break, as his curious team selection has left certain areas light today. Will he make changes to the team for the second period?

Though they started out in a blaze of thrusting attacks through their flying wide men, Juventus leave the field to jeers and whistles from their own fans at the break. The Serie B champions are proving more than a match for their more illustrious counterparts, as Empoli pick holes in a shaky Juve rearguard - particularly targeting Cuadrado's defensive deficiencies on the right. The Azzurri are good value for their half-time lead.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: JUVENTUS 0-1 EMPOLI

42' Chiesa gets up another head of steam, but lacking an attacking focal point, he cuts inside and has to lay off to Dybala outside the box - an increasingly familiar theme.

40' Bonucci mops up, as Empoli lose control in a good attacking position. The action is now breathlessly end to end.

38' Stojanovic - now on a booking - is being kept busy by Chiesa and Alex Sandro on Juve's left, but slides in accurately to thwart an attack and concede a throw-in, which ultimately comes to nothing.

36' Alex Sandro again gets into a good position on the left flank, but balloons his cross and the attack peters out.

34' Bentancur gives the ball away on the edge of his area, but chases back frantically to make sure his error isn't seriously punished. Juventus remain edgy in possession and lack some clarity in their decision making.

31' Alex Sandro is tripped as he races to the left touchline, giving Juventus a free-kick in a dangerous area just outside the box. Cuadrado lines it up, but fires well wide.

29' Making his 300th Serie A appearance today, Juan Cuadrado scored last week from a more advanced wide position, following several years as a flying full-back. He returns to the Juve back line again today, but has his hands full at the moment.

27' Bandinelli and McKennie clash heads, but after a brief pause in the action, play gets back under way.

25' Almost a second for Empoli - the Azzurri's confidence is rising! Cutrone finds himself in space and unleashes a rocket which just flies wide of the left-hand post. Bajrami is running the show and the hosts are on the ropes.

23' Chiesa has a right-footed shot from outside the box saved in the bottom right corner, having been played in deftly by Cuadrado.

18' Rabiot has a left-wing cross charged down to earn a corner. However, the Frenchman's foot is raised too high for the referee's liking from the subsequent set-piece and he concedes a free-kick in the Empoli area.

16' Looking a little dazed, Bonucci goes to ground after an apparently innocent collision with Mancuso. After some medical attention, the Italian international is fit to continue.

14' Bonucci concedes a corner, but Empoli can't make anything of a rare opportunity and possession is turned over.

12' SO CLOSE! Unplayable so far, Chiesa bursts through the centre, leaving Empoli defenders retreating frantically. A brilliant diving save to the right sees his powerful strike denied by Vicario's second fine save of the game.

10' On Empoli's first incursion into the Juve area, Cutrone has his shot blocked by Bonucci at close range.

8' Cuadrado shimmies inside and fires a low cross along the six-yard box, only to see it run through to safety. Interestingly, Max Allegri has opted to start without a traditional centre-forward today.

6' Empoli are struggling to get out of their own defensive third, with attempts to pass out from the back being harried by the hungry home forwards.

5' De Ligt heads well wide of the Empoli goal from a whipped Cuadrado corner.

4' GREAT SAVE! Chiesa looks in the mood today, as he sweeps down the left flank, cuts inside and then sees a powerful strike blocked by the chest of Vicario in the Empoli goal.

2' Juventus immediately apply pressure, as Chiesa whips a dangerous ball across the penalty area, but no-one can make contact. A bright start from the Bianconeri,

1' We are under way at the Allianz Stadium, which eagerly awaits the first game of the post-Ronaldo era! Can Empoli upset the odds and cause the ultimate Serie A shock?

SUBS: Alberto Brignoli, Jacopo Furlan; Leo Stulac, Simone Romagnoli, Liam Henderson, Andrea La Mantia, Riccardo Fiamozzi, Lorenzo Tonelli, Szymon Zurkowski, Mattia Viti, Fabiano Parisi, Andrea Pinamonti.

EMPOLI (4-2-3-1): Guglielmo Vicario; Petar Stojanovic, Ardian Ismajli, Sebastiano Luperto, Riccardo Marchizza; Nicolas Haas, Samuele Ricci; Filippo Bandinelli, Nedim Bajrami, Leonardo Mancuso; Patrick Cutrone.

SUBS: Giorgio Chiellini, Alvaro Morata, Federico Bernardeschi, Carlo Pinsoglio, Manuel Locatelli, Dejan Kulusevski, Mattia Di Sciglio, Nicolo Fagiolo.

JUVENTUS (4-3-3): Wojciech Szczesny; Juan Cuadrado, Leonardo Bonucci, Matthijs De Ligt, Alex Sandro; Rodrigo Bentancur, Danilo, Adrien Rabiot; Federico Chiesa, Paulo Dybala, Weston McKennie.

Despite returning to training last week, Empoli defender Fabiano Parisi will not feature in the back four today, but is edging closer to his return from a broken leg. Newly arrived Andrea Pinamonti bolsters the visitors' attacking options after signing a loan deal from Inter, but must make do with a place on the bench, as Patrick Cutrone is joined by last term's top scorer Leonardo Mancuso up front.

Though Ronaldo is, of course, now departed, Juventus have Adrien Rabiot available after injury and Weston McKennie is back from suspension - and both will start today. Brazilian midfielder Arthur remains sidelined - alongside Aaron Ramsey, who picked up another injury last week - while new signing Manuel Locatelli must wait for a first start after his brief cameo in Udine.

As a measure of the visitors' task today, Juventus have a 79% win percentage against Empoli - emerging victorious from 19 of their last 24 encounters and winning 11 of their 12 home games against the Tuscan side. In fact, the Bianconeri didn't concede a single goal on nine of those occasions!

Serie B champions Empoli, meanwhile, went down to a 3-1 defeat at home to Lazio on the opening day - handing new coach Aurelio Andreazzoli his first competitive defeat after a Coppa Italia win started his reign earlier this month.

A frenetic finale to their first fixture of the 2021-22 campaign saw Juventus leave Udine with only a point last weekend, as they threw away a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2. An 83rd-minute equaliser brought Udinese level before Cristiano Ronaldo appeared from the bench to seemingly head in a trademark winner, only to be denied by the VAR - his final act in a Juve shirt.

After stumbling to a draw on the opening day - and then losing their star striker during a whirlwind week - Juventus are under pressure to pick up their first Serie A victory today, against promoted Empoli.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Serie A fixture between Juventus and Empoli from the Allianz Stadium in Turin!

Ex-Ghana star Manso runs the rule over Akonnor after Mali defeat

The former Dortmund man needed just 333 matches to bring up his triple century and has now scored in 13 consecutive Bundesliga matches

Robert Lewandowski brought up his triple century of goals for Bayern Munich on Saturday as the Poland star's hat-trick helped the Bundesliga champions breeze past Hertha Berlin 5-0 in a one-sided encounter.

Lewandowski picked up right where he left off at the end of the last Bundesliga season and went into the weekend clash with two goals in as many games.

And he is now right back on top of the league scoring charts, which he has topped for six of the last eight years.

The goals keep flowing

The Bayern star might have turned 33 last Saturday, but if anything he is only becoming more deadly as the years go by.

In 2020-21 he set a new personal season best, netting an incredible 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games to mark his biggest league return since arriving in the German top flight with Borussia Dortmund back in 2010.

If anything, he looks more than capable of passing that mark again if the evidence of these first three games is anything to go by.

Lewandowski scored three times for Bayern to thrash Hertha 5-0, with Thomas Muller and Jamal Musiala completing the rout.

Having gone into the game with 298 goals to his name at Bayern, the Poland international also passed the 300 mark with his second of the afternoon, a milestone he has reached - and, with his hat-trick goal, already passed - in just 333 matches.

This was also the 13th consecutive Bundesliga game in which Lewandowski has found the net, a run only bettered by the late, great Gerd Muller.

Saturday's win leaves Bayern tied for first place with Leverkusen and Freiburg with seven points from their first three games; while in what will almost certainly be a gripping race to watch, Lewandowski's hat-trick took him past Dortmund's Erling Haaland, who has three so far, as the league's top scorer with five strikes.

Muller admits to Messi and Ronaldo dream following shock summer moves

Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Muller has admitted that he would have loved to have seen Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo play together across the final years of their career.

The Argentine and Portuguese have both made sport-shaking moves in recent weeks, with long-term Barcelona favourite Messi making the switch to Paris Saint-Germain, while Juventus star Ronaldo has sealed an already famous homecoming to Manchester United.

The prospect of the two playing alongside each other however did appear credible at one point following the former's move to Paris and amid talk the latter wished to leave Turin - and now Germany star Muller has stated that it would have only been a boon for the sport.

What has been said?

"If Kylian Mbappe is still going [from PSG], then I would have liked to see Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi play toegether," the 31-year-old told Sky Sports following his side's 5-0 win over Hertha BSC on Saturday.

"That would have been a very interesting combination, especially for me as a fan of the sport. You need players who are good on the ball and who are well off the ball.

"Cristiano has become a very strong final player. He doesn't need the ball that deep anymore. Messi and Neymar could have walked through midfield. That would have been interesting."

The bigger picture

Muller will avoid an immediate encounter with either Messi or Ronaldo when he returns from international duty with Germany, having been named to Hansi Flick's first squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Bayern have been drawn in Group E of this season's Champions League, alongside Barcelona, Benfica and Dynamo Kyiv, while Messi and PSG will face Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge.

Ronaldo and United meanwhile will face trips to Europa League holders Villarreal - who beat the Red Devils in last year's final - alongside Atalanta and Young Boys.

UAE Arabian Gulf Cup: Shabab Al-Alhli trounce Al-Wasl; To play Al-Nasr in the final

The 21-year-old’s dismissal saw him become the youngest Blues player after the Nigerian to be given the marching orders in a Premier League fixture

Reece James has become the youngest Chelsea player after John Obi Mikel to see red in a Premier League encounter.

The England international was given the marching orders as the Blues settled for a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield Stadium.

A goalmouth scramble resulted in the right-back using his arm to keep out Sadio Mane’s effort.

Although referee Anthony Taylor missed the incident, he was instructed by the VAR to have a look at his pitchside monitor and review.

He did and showed James the way out while awarding a penalty to Jurgen Klopp’s men which was converted by Mohamed Salah after sending Edouard Mendy the wrong direction.

Not only did the Englishman (21y 263d) become the first Chelsea player to be sent off at Anfield in the EPL since Frank Lampard in 2009, he became the second youngest Blues player to be sent off.

Obi Mikel (20y 154d) is the club’s youngest player to see red against Manchester United in 2007.

Notwithstanding their numerical disadvantage, the Stamford Bridge giants picked up an away point to continue their unbeaten run in the 2021-22 campaign.

In his post-match reaction, manager Thomas Tuchel claimed that the combination of the conceding a goal and going down to 10 men was a tough pill to swallow.

“Double punishment is always super hard and it was a bit of a spoiler, but I think it’s the rule now if the referee says he denies a clear goal with his hand,” he told the club website.

“I don’t like these early red cards in general, not just when it’s us but when I’m watching on TV, because for me it spoils the game.

“Nobody wants to see that for 45 minutes; they want to see a high-level game.

“The situation itself, I can understand the decision and I’m not saying it’s a wrong decision, but I did not like the way the referee checked it.

“He checked only the image which showed the contact and then it was a clear decision.

“On the bench we saw also the whole movement and you saw it was a deflection at short distance, it comes off his hip to his arm, the arm is not in a super unnatural arm position.”

Junior Gonzalez named Chicago Fire assistant coach

The Blues were reduced to 10 men after their right-back was sent off for a deliberate handball, leaving his coach perplexed by the decision

Thomas Tuchel says that he does not know the rules surrounding red cards anymore after Reece James' first-half dismissal saw Chelsea hold on for a 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Saturday.

The Blues were reduced to 10 men when the England international was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor following a VAR check for a deliberate handball on the stroke of half-time, with the full-back having made contact with his upper arm after the ball deflected off his leg.

Tuchel's visitors managed to cling on for a point at Anfield, however, after Mohamed Salah's subsequent penalty cancelled out Kai Havertz' opener - but the manager says he remains perplexed as to the finer points of his defender's exit.

What has been said?

"The red card - I'm not even sure anymore if it's the rules or not the rules," the German told BBC Sport. "You have to accept the decision. He maybe would have changed his mind with moving pictures.

"In the end it maybe would have stayed the same. I don't like early red cards in general because it spoils the game. In the end it was a tough and hard fight. We showed great resilience and deserved the point.

"We decided to stay in a back five. We wanted to stay active and make it hard to create chances. The first 10 minutes seemed endless. The last five minutes I was actually praying we take what we deserved. It was a hard and a tough one, but a very strong second half defensively."

Azpilicueta: Chelsea 'doubly punished'

Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta concurred with his coach that the call against James was a tough one, and added that he felt his side were hard done by, though he was quick to credit their resolve after they steadied their emotions in the second half.

"Harsh. I feel sorry for Reece. The referee got advice from VAR to give it. He went to the screen to watch one replay.

"We got the double punishment, red card and a penalty - and two yellow cards in the same action. We were angry. But you have to calm down and find a way to fight together as a team. I think the team fought and maybe we had the best two chances in the second half."

The bigger picture

With the spoils shared at Anfield, both Chelsea and Liverpool remain jointly sat atop the table in the Premier League, as they head into the September international break.

James, called up once more to Gareth Southgate's England squad following his Euro 2020 form, will look to put the difficulties of his trip to Merseyside behind him when he joins up with the Three Lions.

Tuchel meanwhile will be left to mull over the two-week break how he will cover for the right-back's likely absence amid a ban, with games against Aston Villa and Zenit on the agenda.

LIVE: Real Betis vs Real Madrid

58' Vinicius takes on two Betis defenders inside the penalty area, getting past both of them with a lovely turn but his centring pass is intercepted and hammered away by Gonzalez at the edge of the 18-yard box.

57' Both sets of supporters come together to have a laugh at the referee, who gets in the way of a Casemiro slide tackle and is promptly sent to the deck. It’s all smiles from Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez, who looks to have avoided injury.

56' Real Madrid have started the second half in fantastic fashion, putting Betis under serious pressure. The fourth official is the only thing standing between Los Blancos and a breakthrough, with Benzema unable to hold his run on three key occasions so far this evening.

54' REAL MADRID SCORE BUT IT’S OFFSIDE! Casemiro’s chipped cross from the left-hand side of the penalty area finds the head of Benzema, who beats Silva easily - but again the visitors are left disappointed as the striker was unable to hold his run!

52' WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SAVE! Bale is allowed time and space to shape for a trademark left-footed cross, which finds a charging Benzema just outside the six-yard box. The France international powers a close-range header at goal forcing a beautiful reaction save by Silva, though again it won't count for offisde.

50' It’s taken short as it looks to be a routine from the training ground, but the set-piece fails as Madrid are able to get the ball away from their 18-yard box without allowing a shot.

49' Vinicius catches Montoya’s head with a raised boot during an attempt to break on the counter, giving Betis a free-kick just outside Madrid’s penalty area.

48' Benzema gets into the penalty are and swivels to turn his defender before curling a shot with his right foot which sails high over the crossbar.

46' Real Betis get the match restarted from the kick-off!

Having scored six of their seven goals after the half-time restart, Real Madrid will no doubt proceed with confidence. Despite injuries to a number of key players, Ancelotti still has a wealth of talent at his disposal from the substitute’s bench, with Asensio, Hazard and Rodrygo all capable of making an impact. Three of Betis’ four forward players have been booked, which could cause Pellegrini trouble late into the match. Club legend Joaquin or former Barcelona winger Tello could make an impact, providing fresh legs and a direct mentality.

An entertaining but goalless first half at Benito Villamarin comes to a close as neither side is able to do enough to trouble the opposition’s goalkeeper. Both Silva and Courtois have been left relatively untroubled as both Real Betis and Real Madrid look smooth in possession without much of an end-product. Both Benzema and Montoya had chances to open the scoring, but neither were able to hit the target under pressure. A flurry of yellow cards late in the half saw a rise in intensity as Manuel Pellegrini became animated on the touchline, which should set us up for an intriguing second frame.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: REAL BETIS 0-0 REAL MADRID.

45' + 2' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added at the end of the half for stoppages.

42' Juanmi chests down a long pass well and breaks into the penalty area before whacking a right-footed shot towards goal, forcing a great diving parry out of Courtois.

40' After drawing his first two home games against Real Madrid in LaLiga, both as Villarreal coach, Real Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini has alternated between a win and a defeat in his last six home games against Los Blancos in the competition.

38' Isco’s corner finds a wide-open Miltao, who heads it forward to Benzema. The striker springs forward and uses his head to put an effort towards goal but Silva is quick off his line to make an unlikely save. It wouldn’t have counted in the end though, as the linesman raises his flag for offside in the build-up.

36' Montoya cuts inside with intent and fires towards Courtois with his weaker left foot and sends the ball just wide of the near post!

35' Isco’s corner finds the backheel of Casemiro, but the flick-on fails to get through the crowd of bodies as Betis come away with possession following the water break.

33' The referee sends both teams to the touchline as he indicates for a water break, allowing both sides to hydrate in the Seville heat.

31' Fekir takes a speculative shot at goal from 25 yards out but the effort never looked likely to hit the target as Courtois can gather for a goal-kick.

29' An early mishit cross from the left by Canales gives Courtois a bit of a scare as the delivery certainly looked on-target for the near post, but it misses the mark and goes behind for a goal-kick.

27' With seven goals in their first two matches, this Real Madrid attack will be difficult to stop, however, they are a side that come to life in the second half of matches, scoring six goals after the restart.

25' A hopeful pass is hit over the top for Juanmi from midfield, but Alaba beats the forward for pace and allows Courtois to come off his line to pick up the ball at the front of the penalty area.

22' Miranda’s overzealous press down the left gets him in trouble as he sends Carvajal to the ground twice in quick succession, giving Madrid a free-kick and denying a potential counter-attack.

20' Ruibal is sent to the ground during a one-on-one duel with Gutierrez which wins his side a free-kick. It’s a welcome sight for Betis, who have found it very difficult to win back possession in the last five minutes.

18' Real Madrid's Benzema has been involved in six goals in his last seven visits to Benito Villamarín in LaLiga (five goals and one assist) - only at Mestalla and Ipurúa (six each) has he scored more away goals in the competition.

16' Alaba takes a Real Madrid corner looking for Casemiro, but the delivery is sent above the head of the leaping Brazil international - allowing the Betis defence to scramble it away.

14' Canales finds Fekir in midfield, but the forward fails to control the simple pass and allows Vinicius to step in ahead and win possession, before fouling the Real Madrid winger and giving away a free-kick.

12' The corner is taken short but played back to Fekir, who launches a cross to the far post looking for a team-mate, but Militao is able to clear up the danger and take possession back for his side.

11' Fekir uses his left foot and goes for goal looking to catch the goalkeeper napping, but Courtois dives across with ease and turns the shot behind for a corner.

11' Fekir is brought down by Alaba outside Madrid’s penalty area on the left, giving Betis their first real opportunity to test Courtois.

10' Betis are moving it from right to left in midfield as they look for an opening to expose Madrid as Canales looks to dictate play, but Ancelotti’s side are giving their opponents nothing - holding their shape well to keep the hosts at bay.

8' Isco takes a free-kick from deep in midfield after Valverde was taken down by Fekir and manages to find Militao after a deflection on the delivery, but the centre-back’s shot is an easy one for Silva to save.

6' GREAT CHANCE GOES BEGGING FOR MADRID! Vinicius plays a one-two with Benzema and gets by Rodriguez easily with a turn of pace. The ball is centred back to Benzema on the penalty spot, but the captain’s first-time strike misses the target narrowly!

4' The corner comes into the area but Guardado at the near post manages to scramble it away at the first time of asking.

3' Carvajal plays an incisive pass into the penalty area for Valverde, who manages to stay onside and win a corner-kick after his cross is turned behind by Ruiz.

1' Real Madrid get the match underway from the kick-off!

Real Madrid keep the same shape but make three alterations from their 3-3 draw with Levante last weekend. Vazquez is dropped at right-back for Carvajal, while the introduction of left-back Gutierrez for Nacho allows Alaba to play at centre-back alongside Militao. In attack, there’s no room for Hazard as Ancelotti rewards Vinicius with a start for his goal against Levante.

Betis make three changes from their 1-1 draw with Cadiz last time out. Pezzella replaces Gonzalez in defence, while Rodriguez is preferred to Rodri in midfield. The final switch comes in attack, where Ruibal gets a start on the wing, pushing Juanmi forward as the lone striker which drops Iglesias to the bench.

REAL MADRID SUBS: Eden Hazard, Luis Lopez, Antonio Blanco, Toni Fuidias, Luka Jovic, Marco Asensio, Rodrygo, Jesus Vallejo, Lucas Vazquez.

REAL MADRID XI (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Dani Carvajal, Eder Miltao, David Alaba, Miguel Gutierrez; Federico Valverde, Casemiro, Isco; Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior.

REAL BETIS SUBS: Borja Iglesias, Joaquin, Paul Akouokou, Edgar Gonzalez, William Carvalho, Victor Camarasa, Jose Manuel Calderon, Rodrigo Sanchez, Claudio Bravo, Marc Bartra, Cristian Tello, Yassin Fekir.

REAL BETIS XI (4-2-3-1): Rui Silva; Juan Miranda, Victor Ruiz, German Pezzella, Martin Montoya; Andres Guardado, Guido Rodriguez; Nabil Fekir, Sergio Canales, Aitor Ruibal; Juanmi.

With 20 minutes to go before kick-off let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!

A confident 4-1 win for Real Madrid over Deportivo Alaves to start the season was met by a 3-3 draw with Levante last weekend, with Vinicius Junior’s late equaliser stealing a point for Los Blancos. Carlo Ancelotti’s side will look to make it three matches on the spin without defeat and jump into a tie for top spot in Spain ahead of Atletico Madrid’s match tomorrow.

Two 1-1 draws to start the season have Betis in 10th position as they welcome Real Madrid to the Estadio Benito Villamarin. The hosts have gone nine matches unbeaten at home in the league since a loss to Barcelona in February, though they were bested by today’s opponents last time they met in Seville, going down 3-2 thanks to a late Sergio Ramos penalty.

Chelsea provide Kante injury update after star forced off in Liverpool draw

The France midfielder started against the Reds but was replaced at the break following a challenge by Sadio Mane

Thomas Tuchel has revealed that N'Golo Kante's early exit against Liverpool on Saturday came due to the same ankle injury that kept him out of the Blues' previous Premier League clash with Arsenal.

The France midfielder started against the Reds but was replaced at half-time, following a chaotic first-half that saw the 10-men Blues hold on for a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

A challenge from Sadio Mane felled Kante, forcing an early exit, and now Tuchel has confirmed that he was removed after aggravating an existing knock.

What has been said?

"He is injured, he had to go out," the Tuchel explained in his post-match press conference. "He missed the Arsenal game because of pain in his ankle and a little bit of inflammation

"[It's] nothing serious because he was back in training and, as you could see, he started today. In winning the ball in this situation, the opponent fell on his ankle, [and] twisted it again.

"He immediately had the same pain as before the Arsenal game when he missed it. He was lacking the force to accelerate and we had to take him off.

"Can there be any harder challenges than going one man down, taking off N'Golo Kante at half time, and having Liverpool play towards the Kop? But we did excellently and we are super happy with what we did. We deserved the point."

The bigger picture

A standout for both club and country ever since he helped Les Bleus to the World Cup at Russia 2018, Kante has been a cornerstone of Chelsea's success in recent years, culminating in last term's Champions League triumph.

His injury threatens his inclusion in France's Qatar 2022 qualifiers next month, but it could also have longer-reaching consequences for the Blues as they prepare to defend their European crown.

Chelsea will face Aston Villa in the Premier League in a fortnight, before their continental campaign gets underway against Zenit.

Klopp fears muscle injury for Firmino after Liverpool star's early withdrawal against Chelsea

The Brazilian managed just over 40 minutes in his first start of the season before coming off for Diego Jota

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that Roberto Firmino is not in good shape after becoming an early casualty in his side's 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.

Firmino completed just over 40 minutes of the Premier League clash before coming off for Diego Jota with the Reds trailing at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah later restored parity from the penalty spot as Reece James saw red for handling on the line , but the hosts failed to press home their advantage and had to settle for a point as the 10-man Blues dug in after the break.

What was said?

"Is Firmino okay? Not really. Probably a muscle. I hope it is not too big," the German explained to  Sky Sports  after the final whistle.

The Brazilian had only recently returned to the starting line-up after coming off the bench in Liverpool's opening two Premier League clashes, having felt the effects of a busy summer of international football with the Selecao.

In his absence Diego Jota proved an admirable replacement, scoring in back-to-back wins over Norwich City and Burnley; while the upcoming international break will afford Firmino a fortnight's recovery before Klopp's men return to league action.

'Obviously deserved'

The manner of Liverpool's equaliser caused some discussion, with doubt remaining over whether James intended to handle on the line.

Klopp, though, is convinced that the right decision was made.

"The goal we got was obviously very deserved. I think it is a clear penalty. We forced it in that situation," he added.

"Second half everyone thinks 'come on'. There is a definite advantage in possession, you have to outnumber them and defend them really high, but the defensive structure changes in that case that they are only defending slightly deeper but they have eight players defending that area around the box so we couldn’t use that.

"We had our shots from distance, I would have loved to have been a bit closer for the rebound but it was a good game."

'Mamelodi Sundowns' build-ups compromised by wind against Golden Arrows' - Mokwena

The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach pointed out that it was very important for his side not to lose against the KwaZulu-Natal outfit

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rhulani Mokwena bemoaned the bad weather for his side from being able to play their usual passing game against Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon.

The Brazilians grabbed an important away goal through Pavol Safranko in their MTN8 semi-final first-leg encounter against Abafana Bes'thende which ended in a 1-1 draw at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban.

The rain-soaked match was played on a wet pitch and Arrows opened the scoring through Nqobeko Dlamini's sixth-minute goal as Abafana Bes'thende looked to return to winning ways having lost 3-1 to SuperSport United in a PSL game on Wednesday.

Mokwena praised the Tshwane giants for showing good resilience and character, while also lauding the team's tactical change which led to the fightback as their goalscorer Safranko was a substitute.

"Difficult game against a very good side," Mokwena told SuperSport TV.

"A wounded side that lost against SuperSport. Good resilience from our team. Very good fight. Very good character and very important not to lose because it allows us to keep going and prepare for the second leg.

"We changed things a little bit. We went with [Thabiso] Kutumela and Pavol. We tried to change the structure slightly. It allowed us to keep them."

Sundowns resorted to playing crosses after finding it difficult to penetrate the Arrows defence with their passing game and Safranko scored after the hosts had failed to deal with Thapelo Morena's low cross.

Mokwena insisted that he was not using the bad weather as an excuse and stressed the importance of their away goal with Sundowns scheduled to host Arrows in the second-leg match in Pretoria on September 28.

"Also, the conditions didn't help much. We don't want to make excuses. We are a passing team. When you play against the wind, especially in the first half, your build-ups are a little bit compromised," he added.

"We got the equaliser and the away goal, which is very important and extremely crucial."

Sundowns are hoping to go all the way and win the MTN8 title for the first time since 2007 when the competition was still known as the SAA Supa 8 Cup.

Man Utd fixtures: How Sevilla Europa League tie fits into 2022/23 schedule

The Senegal international was in splendid form on Saturday as the Blues were held by Jurgen Klopp’s men

Edouard Mendy recorded a personal best as Chelsea settled for a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

The goalkeeper was called upon to make six saves against Jurgen Klopp’s men, the most in a single appearance since teaming up with the Blues in any competition.

Kai Havertz put his team ahead in the 22nd minute having been assisted by Reece James, nevertheless, the hosts restored parity through Mohamed Salah before the half-time break.

The dismissal of James gave the Reds a numerical advantage, albeit, they were denied the opportunity to score the winner thanks to the former Rennes goalkeeper’s heroics.

Before his move to the Premier League giants, the 29-year-old was relatively unknown as he starred for Ligue 1 side, Rennes.

However, he shot into the limelight having joined Chelsea in a £22m ($31m) deal as Tuchel’s men sought to find greater solidity between the sticks as costly errors had sneaked into Kepa Arrizabalaga’s game.

He has since proven to be one of the bargain signings, making crucial saves for the Londoners who finished fourth in the 2020-21 league campaign.

The Senegal international also played a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League success – featuring in 12 games and not conceding a goal on nine occasions – a feat that earned him Europe's Goalkeeper of the Year Award.

In a recent interview, former Sunshine Stars player Olumide Akinroyeje believes Mendy will remain Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper despite Arrizabalaga’s superb display against Villarreal in the Uefa Super Cup.

“Kepa [Arrizabalaga] was brave to have saved two Villarreal penalties and that is not a pointer that he would stroll back as Chelsea’s first-choice,” Akinroyeje told Goal.

“As it stands [Edouard] Mendy remains the first choice at Stamford Bridge and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

“Since his arrival from Rennes, he has brought consistency to the Chelsea backline line and played a key role in the team’s Champions League win. So, it would be irrational to have him not sit on the bench because someone saved two kicks.

“What this means is that Mendy should work harder in training so that he can be counted on when it comes to penalty situations.”
