Lukaku confirmed as Chelsea's new No.9 following Abraham's move to Roma

The Belgian frontman has also revealed that he is ready to feature when the Blues take on Arsenal at Emirates Stadium this weekend

Romelu Lukaku has confirmed that he will be Chelsea's new No.9 following Tammy Abraham's move to Roma.

Lukaku was initially given the No.18 jersey upon his return to Stamford Bridge from Inter last week, but has now inherited Abraham's number following his permanent move to Stadio Olimpico.

The 28-year-old could take in his first outing in the new shirt when Chelsea take in the short trip to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Saturday, having started full training with Thomas Tuchel's squad at the start of the week.

What's been said?

"Can I say it? Yes, I have the no9. I am happy and fortunate to be in this situation," Lukaku told a pre-match press conference.

The Belgian added on the challenge of facing Arsenal in his first game back at Chelsea: "They are rebuilding and, at the end of the day, I just look at my team and focus on what we have.

"It's going to be a tough game but we will prepare ourselves for a battle."

More to follow.

Aymeric Laporte leaves Man City to join Al Nassr

The Belgian frontman will undertake a new challenge in the Turkish Super Lig after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge once again

Michy Batshuayi has joined Besiktas on a season-long loan after extending his contract at Chelsea by an extra year.

Batshuayi will spend the 2021-22 campaign with the Turkish club after passing a medical at their training ground on Wednesday.

The Belgian extended his contract with Chelsea until 2023 before departing, but it has been reported Besiktas will have the option to buy him outright for between £5 million and £11m next summer.

What's been said?

Batshuayi has taken to social media to confirm the move, writing on Twitter: "Very very happy to join Besiktas, an incredible opportunity for me and I'm already looking to play.

"Thank you to all the fans for the crazy welcome at Istanbul. See you at the stadium very soon. #batsman"

Meanwhile, Chelsea have released an official statement revealing that the forward could make his debut for Besiktas as early as this weekend.

"Michy Batshuayi has today extended his contract at Chelsea until 2023 and joined Besiktas on loan for the season," the statement reads.

"The Belgian forward heads to Vodafone Park – the venue of our 2019 Super Cup clash with Liverpool - for the remainder of this season, after passing a medical in Istanbul and signing the relevant paperwork. He could make his debut for Besiktas on Saturday."

Batshuayi heads on loan again

Batshuayi's latest move marks the fifth time he has been sent out on loan since joining Chelsea from Marseille in 2016.

The 27-year-old had spells at Borussia Dortmund and Valencia before being snapped up on a six-month deal by Crystal Palace in January 2019.

Chelsea brought him back for the 2019-20 campaign, but sent him to Palace again the following season as he continued to struggle for regular minutes.

Batshuayi scored twice in 18 games for the Eagles last term before reporting for pre-season at Stamford Bridge in July, and was heavily linked with a permanent move to Selhurst Park at one stage.

However, the Blues have opted to send the Belgium international to Turkey this time around, with competition for places in Thomas Tuchel's squad at an all-time high following Romelu Lukaku's arrival from Inter.

Will Chelsea do any more business?

Batshuayi is unlikely to be the last man to walk through the Stamford Bridge exits this summer, with it reported that Chelsea are also looking to offload Kurt Kouma, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko on either loan or permanent deals.

Meanwhile, Sevilla defender Jules Kounde continues to be strongly linked with the Blues, and Goal has reported that talks between the two clubs have taken place, but the recent emergence of Trevoh Chalobah could see the European champions cool their interest in the Frenchman.

Ronaldo charged by FA over fan phone incident

The chair - who feels the video referee will improve the game - stated they are still in deep talks with the relevant bodies

The Premier Soccer League chairman, Irvin Khoza, has revealed what is delaying their plans to introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the competition.

Khoza said they are still discussing the technological and cost aspects as they hope to have VAR in PSL. The discussion over the introduction of the video referee is still ongoing between the league organisers, the South African Football Association (Safa) and the referee employer's body.

"There’s an issue of phasing it in, which comes first. There’s also an issue with goal-line [technology], which we need to address, as well as offside, but as I said, there’s the issue of cost," Khoza told the media on Thursday.

"If this VAR is going to be centrally controlled or decentralised… there was a discussion about it. It should be discussed in the next joint liaison committee [between PSL and Safa] because the issue of referees resides with Safa."

Although Khoza acknowledges the VAR decisions could irritate people, he largely believes it is going to improve the state of the league.

"It’s a good thing to have to enhance the product," he added.

"It could ensure that technically we’re sound, in making sure that people are satisfied. Although they’re not satisfied sometimes in Europe because when you say there’s an offside with the millimetre judgment, it’s something some of us can’t see. It makes people irritated.

"But it’s a reality and it eradicates dissatisfaction. Even rugby does that - they show you all the different angles before a call is made, which is also good for the supporters to be satisfied with the decision. That’s why there are no fights in the stands.

"So for us, we’re welcoming it but we’re trying to do the mitigation in terms of costs and implementation to make sure that it becomes a reality and we’re in line with the rest of the world."

The call for the introduction of the video referee was heightened over the weekend after a penalty drama in the Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns MTN8 encounter on Sunday.

Chiefs' goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune looked to have cleared Lyle Lakay's penalty after the ball had crossed the line, and Sundowns' Kennedy Mweene was the first to protest the decision not to award his teammate the goal.

'Kjaer was totally out of it' - Eriksen collapse should force UEFA protocol changes says Finland keeper Hradecky

The Finnish No 1 has questioned the governing body's handling of the incident, which saw the Inter midfielder stop breathing on the pitch

Christian Eriksen's collapse at Euro 2020 should force UEFA protocol change, according to Finland goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, who says that "everyone saw" Denmark captain Simon Kjaer "was totally out of it" after tending to his fallen team-mate.

The opening Group B game of this summer's European Championship on June 12 was marred by a major health scare for Eriksen as Denmark's medical staff were forced to resuscitate the midfielder after he stopped breathing on the pitch.

Eriksen eventually regained consciousness and made a full recovery in hospital while Denmark and Finland agreed to resume play hours after the incident, but Hradecky believes both sets of players should have been given more time to process such a harrowing event.

What's been said?

The Finland No 1 has pointed out that Kjaer, who gave Eriksen CPR before Denmark's medical team intervened, was left visibly shaken by the whole ordeal along with the rest of his team-mates, while expressing his belief that the decision to play on should have been taken out of their hands.

"Everyone saw, for example, that Simon Kjaer was totally out of it and still completely shocked," Hradecky told Goal and SPOX. "There must be a clearly defined protocol on what to do in such incidents.

"That would be very helpful to everyone involved. It must not be the case that traumatised players have to think about what should happen. Football is about people, as this case has once again clearly shown. They are the most important. So we need a clear rule that puts the human and not the commercial perspective in the foreground."

The Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper added on his reaction to Eriksen's sudden collapse:  "It was just terrible. The scene itself looked very strange. Despite my distance from what was happening, I quickly realised that it was something serious.

"Christian was completely gone. You are simply not prepared for it and don't know what to do in such a situation.

"So I say hats off to Simon Kjaer and Kasper Schmeichel in particular, but also to all the other Danish players, for what they did in those moments."

The swift restart

Hradecky's comments echo those of Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand, who said his players were given the option to either carry on with the game on the same night or at noon the following day.

"I think it was the wrong decision to make between the two scenarios," he said in a press conference later in the tournament. "It was very tough for the players. They didn't even know if they could probably lose their best friend. I have the feeling that we shouldn't have played and wrong that the players had to decide."

How is Eriksen now?

Doctors confirmed that Eriksen had suffered cardiac arrest after conducting a number of tests in hospital, and he was fitted with an ICD heart-starting device before being discharged.

The 29-year-old then reunited with his family and Denmark teammates, and gave his colleagues his support from afar as they made it all the way through to the Euros semi-finals, only to lose against England 2-1 after extra time.

Eriksen returned to Italy to visit his current club Inter at the start of August, and is now in the middle of an extensive rehabilitation programme, but it is not known whether he will be cleared to resume his playing career in the near future.

Arsenal close to sealing Odegaard move as they step up talks with Real Madrid

The Gunners are hopeful of finalising a permanent deal for the Norwegian, who impressed on loan at Emirates Stadium last term

Arsenal are close to sealing a move for Martin Odegaard move after stepping up talks with Real Madrid, Goal can confirm.

Odegaard spent six months on loan at Emirates Stadium in 2020-21, and endeared himself to Arsenal fans with his infectious energy in the middle of the pitch and eye for defence-splitting passes.

The 22-year-old returned to Real for their latest pre-season campaign in June, but Goal has reported the Spanish giants are now open to his departure on a permanent basis, with the Gunners eager to bring him back to north London.

Arsenal breakthrough

Arsenal are hopeful of reaching an agreement to buy Odegaard outright after accelerating negotiations with Real, who could let him leave Santiago Bernabeu for around £30 million ($41m).

Goal understands the Gunners would like to finalise the transfer before their next Premier League game against Chelsea this weekend, but he would have to be registered before midday on Friday to be eligible to take part at the Emirates.

It has been reported that Odegaard will commit to a five-year deal with Arsenal, having been left out of Real's 4-1 opening La Liga victory against Alaves on Saturday.

Odegaard's career so far

Odegaard began his career with Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset in 2015, where he spent one year before being snapped up by Madrid at the age of 16.

The Blancos integrated him into their Castilla squad, but eventually took the decision to send him out on loan to gain more first-team experience.

The talented playmaker had spells at Heerenveen and Vitesse before joining Real Sociedad, where he started to realise his potential by helping the club finish sixth in La Liga and reach the Copa del Rey final.

Odegaard reported back to Santiago Bernabeu last summer with a view to breaking into the Blancos' starting XI, but opportunities were still few and far between and Arsenal offered him a way out in January.

The Norway international scored two goals and set up another two in 20 games across all competitions for Mikel Arteta's side, and now looks set to continue his career at Emirates Stadium.

Kaizer Chiefs' Blom opens up about unfamiliar right-back role under Baxter

The hard-working player foresees a good season for the Soweto giants despite their elimination from the Top 8 competition

Kaizer Chiefs central midfielder Njabulo Blom says he will give his all and cement his place in the side this season after being played in an unfamiliar right-back position by coach Stuart Baxter.

The 21-year-old player started as a right-back for the Soweto giants in their MTN8 quarter-final match against Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend and Chiefs suffered a 2-1 loss on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

This came as a surprise as Blom was Amakhosi's best midfielder last season and he picked up the Man of the Match award after Chiefs' win over Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup clash earlier this month.

Blom, who was nurtured in the Chiefs academy before being promoted to the club's first team in 2019, stated that he will take it as a learning experience.

“I always appreciate the game time that I get because I know it is important for me as I’m still growing and have a lot to learn. So I take it as a learning experience,” Blom told the club's media department.

Blom struggled defensively as the Soweto-born player was targeted by Sundowns duo of Themba Zwane and Lyle Lakay in a game which was played at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

However, the Bafana Bafana international was impressed with his overlapping runs which saw him grab an assist when his delightful cross was headed home by Bernard Parker for Chiefs' first goal.

“Whether they play me as a midfielder or right-back, for me it is like giving my best every game that I get. For me, as a young player, it gives me confidence and it helps me to even work harder," he continued.

Blom feels that the team is heading in the right direction this season and he is determined to help the team win some trophies with the new PSL season set to start this weekend.

“I think as a team we did well in both games. We know where we are going and we are willing to go far. We are working hard at training, listening to the coach’s instructions," he added.

“We are willing to work hard this season to get good results and win some trophies.”

Chiefs are scheduled to start their PSL campaign with a clash against Mpumalanga-based side TS Galaxy at 2010 Fifa World Cup venue Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

Gor Mahia’s Harrison recommended Mali keeper Keita's signing, not ‘cartels’ – Aduda

The K’Ogalo official refutes claims the signing of the 31-year-old Malian custodian was done behind the back of other officials

Gor Mahia official Omondi Aduda has dismissed claims their first signing of the transfer window, Mali goalkeeper Adama Keita, was brought on board by “cartels” at the club.

The 31-year-old custodian was unveiled on Saturday after arriving from Cl Kamsar of Guinea and his transfer caused an uproar, with the club’s treasurer Dolphina Adhiambo coming out to state she was not involved in the acquisition of the player.

Aduda, who is the club’s sporting director, has told Goal the new keeper was signed as a recommendation by new coach Mark Harrison and that Adhiambo was among the officials who attended the meeting to discuss the new signings for the club.

What did Aduda say?

“All those players Gor Mahia will sign this season are as a recommendation from the coach, he has given the technical committee the list of the players he wants, and that will be done,” Aduda told Goal on Wednesday.

“The coach has given us the list and the Mali keeper was among those players he wants, he has also said he is putting his neck on the chopping board, if the players he has recommended will not be up to the task, he will take the responsibility, he will carry the cross.

“The coach wants a total of 26 players, manageable, and new players he wants an experienced goalkeeper, two strikers, two offensive players, and two wing-backs.”

On cartels being involved in signing players, Aduda said: “Who are these cartels? The technical committee comprises the vice-chairman of the club, is he among the cartels?

“It is important to get this and also throw back this question to her [Dophina Adhiambo], instead, of writing things which are not verified, it is not true, there was a technical committee cum executive meeting that took place last week.

“Francis [Wasuna] was present, chairman Ambrose [Rachier] was present, Sam [Ochola] the Secretary was present, Ray Oruo the CEO was present, Dolphina [Adhiambo] was present, the head coach was present, the assistant coach was present, team manager was present, goalkeeper trainer was present, the coach read what he wants.

“So how does Adhiambo claim she doesn’t know who signed the keeper? She was present during the meeting and it is better you go back to her to explain [what she said], and who are these cartels she is referring to.”

McCarthy highlights AmaZulu's major concern ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns clash

Usuthu, last season's runners up, will start the new campaign against the champions after a "disruptive" pre-season according to their star coach

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed the fitness worries he has ahead of their Premier Soccer League encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

McCarthy missed as many as 11 players for the MTN8 quarter-final game which Usuthu lost 2-1 against Cape Town City in Durban on Sunday, but the tactician is hopeful he would have all of them available for the season opener.

"It is not an easy game away from home against Sundowns, but we can prepare ourselves very well," McCarthy said as was quoted by The Times

"I think this week, for me, it is going to be just to see if we will be able to get our players registered on time and ready for the Sundowns game, because it was crucial players who I was not able to make use of [against City].

"We had 11 players who tested positive for Covid-19 [ahead of the match against City] so they were self-isolating.

"They will be back at training and we will have everyone available, but these guys have lost 10 days after having to isolate. From Monday to Thursday, they had to get themselves to a decent level so we could compete against the league champions.

"That would be a challenge, but at least it will just be nice to have everyone back and a full squad to choose from."

The former Bafana Bafana star is further worried that the pre-season disruption could affect his game plan when they take on the defending champions, as well as throughout the season.

"When you play a high press, you have to have a fit team for it. You have to have a team that understands how the press works and where to set the traps," he added.

"You have to have that and at the moment we are a little bit off the pace because we have had such a disruptive pre-season.

"We did not have the best of pre-seasons but we will work ourselves towards there and see where we are at."

The coach also opened up about why his side was not keen on going into extra time against Eric Tinkler’s side on Sunday.

"We wanted to avoid extra time because we played in the Premier Cup, which I think was quite hectic for the guys, and we did not have the best week leading up to this game with all the injuries and stuff we had picked up," he concluded.

"We wanted to avoid extra time and penalties and we wanted to just go for the game."

As Usuthu bowed out of the MTN8 contest, their season-opening rivals Sundowns advanced into the semis after a tough fight against Kaizer Chiefs.

Afcon 2021: Nigeria & Sudan 'not easy’ for Egypt - El Badry after draw

Nevertheless, the Pharaohs boss claimed his team have what it takes to progress to the knockout phase of Cameroon 2021

Coach Hossam El Badry stated that Egypt’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations group "was not easy", following Tuesday night's draw in Cameroon.

The seven-time African champions were paired in Group D with Nigeria, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in the 33rd edition of the continental showpiece.

The Pharaohs will begin their quest for glory against Gernot Rohr’s Super Eagles at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua on January 11.

Reacting to the draw, the 61-year-old admitted that his team have handed a quite balanced draw but expects tough fights from each of their opponents.

Nonetheless, he is upbeat that the North Africans will advance to the knock-out stage judging by the quality of players in his team.

“Our group was quite balanced and not easy due to the improvement of all these teams, who also have great players,” El-Badry told the media per Kingfut.

“I have great confidence in God and in the capabilities of the players to overcome this group and perform well to satisfy the aspirations of the Egyptian fans.

“The coaching staff and I are thinking about each stage separately.”

Unbeaten in their last eight international matches, Egypt will begin their race to qualify for the 2022 World Cup Qatar against Angola in September.

According to El Badry, that is his immediate concern at the moment.

“Currently, we are only focusing on the team’s journey in the World Cup qualifiers to achieve our target to qualify for the finals,” he continued.

“As we already reached our first target, which was to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

“All the parties involved in the national team, starting with the president of the federation, Ahmed Megahed and members of its normalization committee, passing through the players and members of the technical, administrative and medical staff, bear a great responsibility in satisfying the fans and fulfilling their aspirations to be present in the World Cup.

“This would be a great honour for everyone who contributes to this great achievement. I ask everyone to continue to support the national team in this difficult and exceptional period that Egyptian football is going through.”

Despite hosting the 2019 edition of the biennial African football showpiece, Egypt crashed out in the Round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to South Africa, with Thembinkosi Lorch’s effort sending Bafana Bafana through to the quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual bronze medal winners Nigeria.

Oluoch: Long-serving FKF Premier League star to leave Gor Mahia

The 34-year-old goalkeeper has not been prominently involved this season for the local giants, and have decided to leave for greener pastures

Long-serving Football Kenya Federation Premier League player Boniface Oluoch is to leave Gor Mahia once the 2020/21 season ends.

Oluoch has not been a prominent member of the Gor Mahia team in the ongoing campaign especially since Gad Mathews and Samuel Njau were signed to bolster the goalkeeping area.

The experienced and multiple league title winner joined K'Ogalo in December 2014 from Tusker and stamped his authority as the undisputable number one choice, only to fall down the pecking order in the current campaign where the club has coincidentally struggled under different managers.

"Oluoch has decided to leave," a source close to the player told Goal. "He feels that he has served the club wholeheartedly, he has helped them win what was winnable and has equally shared their struggle and challenges.

"He is very much happy with the success registered although the continental campaign over the seasons was not achieved. He will be leaving Gor Mahia with his head held high because his contributions are there for everyone to see.

"Although he might have not enjoyed how he was treated in the current season, that is not a reason to overlook what has been achieved and collectively shared since he arrived more than seven years ago."

When Njau and Mathews were signed, there were reports Oluoch objected to the decision but the source has refuted those claims: "Oluoch was a player and thus could not have influenced who was to be signed," he added.

"What he could do was just to give a suggestion but the club was not bound to go by what he suggested."

Oluoch made his Premier League debut in 2000 while he was at KCB and was part of the Kenya national team from 2010 and made 29 appearances.

The imminent exit of the 34-year-old comes after the local giants signed Adama Keita from Mali. Keita, 31, will be the fourth goalkeeper at Gor Mahia as Caleb Omondi has also been operating for the club in addition to Mathews and Njau.

A number of local and foreign players have been linked with K'Ogalo although some of their high-profile stars like Tito Okello and Clifton Miheso are pushing for exit due to financial challenges.

Kroos drops Mbappe to Real Madrid transfer hint & discusses Messi exit weakening Barcelona

The Germany midfielder believes Paris Saint-Germain's signing of the six-time Ballon d'Or winner could end up working in the Blancos' favour

Toni Kroos has dropped a Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid transfer hint while discussing Lionel Messi's Barcelona exit potentially weakening his club's main rivals.

Messi's 21-year career at Camp Nou officially came to an end at the start of the month when Barca announced that they were unable to re-sign the 34-year-old due to their ongoing struggle to get below La Liga's current wage limit.

PSG subsequently swooped in to sign Messi on a free transfer, but it has been suggested that they could lose another star name in the form of Mbappe, who has yet to reach an agreement with the club over a contract extension.

What's been said?

Kroos can now see Mbappe making his way to Real Madrid, with it his belief that Messi's move to Parc des Princes could end up working in the Blancos' favour in a number of different ways.

"We'll see how it all works out (Messi to PSG). Maybe the move is good for us because our biggest competitor has lost their best player," the Germany international said while talking to his brother on their joint podcast Einfach mal luppen.

"And maybe even more good things will come out of it as a result. Maybe [a player] from Paris joins us… If that (Mbappe joining Madrid) should actually happen - I don't know - this whole Messi deal would certainly not be a disadvantage for us."

PSG's stance on Mbappe

Mbappe has just entered the final year of his contract at PSG, and Goal has reported that Real will wait until next summer before swooping for his signature if a deal cannot be arranged before the end of the current transfer window.

However, Parc des Princes president Nasser Al-Khelaifi made it clear that he expects the World Cup winner to stay put after Messi's unveiling in Paris last week.

"The future of Mbappe? I think everyone knows. His future is clear. He said it himself, he wanted us to have a competitive team," he said. "Well, we have the most competitive in the world right now. So there is no excuse for him now. He can't do anything else but stay."

Kroos picks between Messi & Ronaldo

Kroos went on to weigh in on the eternal debate over who is the greatest player of all time, choosing his former Real team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, who now plays for Juventus, over Barcelona's all-time record goalscorer Messi.

"From my playing days, it's Cristiano Ronaldo (best player of all time)," said the Blancos star. "Of course I'm biased because he made a decisive contribution to us winning a lot of titles. It was exciting and impressive (to play alongside Ronaldo).

"We were not only team-mates, but also neighbours in the dressing room and neighbours in private. He lived right next to me. Seeing what a perfectionist he is was impressive.

"That is why it is forbidden for me to name Messi (as the best player of all time)."

Bundesliga, NFL eye growth with new partnership

The erstwhile Bursaspor man opens up on what he believes should be the Black Stars’ biggest immediate ambition

Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu would prefer Ghana won the Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon than qualify for the next World Cup tournament in Qatar.

The Black Stars have been on a long search for a fifth continental title since beating hosts Libya on penalties to win the 1982 championship.

Their World Cup story, on the other hand, currently finds itself in a sad tale after they missed out on qualification for Russia 2018, having earlier endured a disastrous campaign at the 2014 gathering in Brazil.

“For me, I will prefer winning the Afcon even more than qualifying to the World Cup, that is my opinion,” 30-year-old Badu, who retired from international football last year, told Starr FM.

“I have gone to five Afcons, I won the U20 World Cup, I know what I have gained when I won it.

“So just imagine after 40 years, if these my brothers there can win the Afcon, it will be a huge impact on their career and for the nation, so I will prefer that.”

To win the next Afcon, which is scheduled to start on January 9 and end on February 6 next year, Ghana must first make its way out of a group which also has Morocco, Gabon and the Comoro Islands.

It will be the Black Stars 23rd appearance at the continental showpiece.

“I think it’s a tricky group,” legendary Ghana striker Gyan said of the Black Stars first-round opponents for the upcoming event.

“Morocco are up there, I think they conceded just one goal in the qualification, which statistically are one of the strongest in the group.

“Ghana are also up there. That’s my country, I will be rooting for my country. But everybody who has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations is coming to win. So statistically, we’re up there but we don’t know what is going to happen.

“We just have to stay focused and do what we can do to just qualify from this group and then we see what happens because without [qualifying from] the group, you cannot be thinking of winning the cup.

"So we have to make sure we qualify from the group stage, and then think about winning the cup.”

Before Afcon comes around early next year, the Black Stars will have to face Ethiopia, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers which commences in September.

Women's World Cup Daily: A day of history for Philippines, South Korea

The Argentine left Serie A for Sevilla last January but has only now revealed his motivation

Alejandro 'Papu' Gomez has claimed he left Atalanta in January because head coach Gian Piero Gasperini tried to "physically attack" him in the dressing room at half-time of a Champions League match against Midtjylland.

The allegation, which had not been made previously, helps explain why the Argentine forward abruptly exited an organisation he captained and had come to openly love.

Gomez said he asked club president Antonio Percassi for a transfer when Gasperini refused to apologise to him, but he claimed Percassi would not allow him to join any other Serie A clubs despite his desire to remain in Italy.

What has been said?

"I disobeyed him in a tactical indication," Gomez told newspaper newspaper La Nacion of how the controversy began. "There were 10 minutes left until the first half was over and he asked me to play on the right, while I was playing very well on the left. And I said no.

"Having done that in the middle of the game, with the cameras ... it was perfectly [fine] that he got angry. I already knew that at half-time he was going to take me out, and so [he did].

"But in the halftime locker room he exceeded the limits and tried to physically attack me."

Gomez continued: "When there is physical aggression, it is already intolerable. So I asked for a meeting with the president of the club, Antonio Percassi, and I told him that I had no problem continuing, accepting that I had been wrong: as a captain I had not behaved well, I had been a bad example disobeying the coach.

"But I told the president that I needed an apology from Gasperini."

That apology never arrived, however, which essentially ended the relationship between Gomez and the organisation.

"The next day there was a meeting of the entire team," the player said. "I apologised to the coach and my teammates for what had happened. And I did not receive any apology from the coach.

"After a few days I communicated to the president that I did not want to be at Atalanta working with Gasperini. The president told me that he was not going to let me out, that he was not going to release me. The tug of war began and the costs were for me that they separated me from the squad and I ended up training only with the reserves.

"It was ugly because after seven years they left me lying there, after everything I gave the club. They behaved badly. The president did not have the balls to ask the coach to simply apologise to me. That was the end of everything."

Gomez addresses Atalanta fans

"People don't know what happened, so I'm just now telling it," he said. "People are going to know the truth now, and they deserve it and I deserve it.

"From one day to the next, I disappeared. The journalists stopped asking about me in Atalanta, nor do they ask my ex-teammates. It's like I stopped existing for Atalanta.

I think their intention was to place all the blame on me. And the truth is not that. "And people, perhaps, are angry with me because it is thought that I did not want to continue in Atalanta, or it is believed that I preferred to go to Seville for more money. None of that. It was time for the fans to know the truth."

Man Utd in Contact With Bayern Munich's Thiago - But Wage Demands an Issue

The qualification round of the 2022 AFC U23 Championship will be held in October and the final tournament will be hosted by Uzbekistan...

India are all set to take part in the qualification round of the 2022 AFC U23 Championship which will be held between October 27 to October 31 and the final competition is expected to be held in Uzbekistan in 2022.

The tournament was started in January 2014 and so far four editions of the competition have been held. India, unfortunately, have never managed to make it past the qualifying group stages. India's best-ever performance in the qualifying round of the AFC U23 Championship was in the inaugural edition of the competition where they secured seven points in the five games and had scored 11 goals in the tournament.

In the 2016 and 2020 qualification rounds, India failed to secure any points. And in 2016, the Blue Tigers did not score a single goal in the group matches. Here's how the Blue Tigers have performed in the AFC U23 Championship.

India have appeared in the qualification rounds of all four previous editions of the AFC U23 Championships but never managed to go past the qualifying group stage and make it to the final tournament.

2013 AFC U23 Championship qualification

India were placed in Group A of the qualification round West Zone alongside Iraq, UAE, Oman, Lebanon and Turkmenistan. The Blue Tigers managed to pick up seven points from five games and finished fourth in the group thereby getting ousted from the competition.

India won only two matches during the campaign - 5-2 against Lebanon and 4-1 against Turkmenistan. They drew 1-1 with UAE and lost to UAE and Oman. Former Dempo and Bengaluru FC attacker Alwyn George was the top scorer for India with four goals, followed Jeje Lalpekhlua who scored three.

2016 AFC U23 Championship qualification

India were clubbed in Group E in the qualification round along with Syria, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh. The India colts lost their opening two matches against Uzbekistan and Syria 2-0 and 4-0 respectively and managed to hold Bangladesh to a goalless draw in their last group game.

The Indians returned from the competition without scoring a single goal in the qualification round.

2018 AFC U23 Championship qualification

In the 2018 AFC U23 Championship qualification round, India were placed in Group C alongside Qatar, Syria and Turkmenistan. India began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Syria followed by a 1-0 defeat to Qatar. In their last match, they thrashed Turkmenistan 3-1. Manvir Singh, Alen Deory and Jerry Lalrinzuala were on target for India.

The Blue colts finished third in the group and were ousted from the competition. They managed to score three goals and conceded four.

2020 AFC U23 Championship qualification

In the qualification round of the last edition of the AFC U23 Championship, India were placed in Group FC alongside hosts Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan. But before the qualifying round began, Pakistan withdrew their team from the competition.

India lost both their ties in the group stage 3-0 to Uzbekistan and 2-0 to Tajikistan and returned home without scoring a single goal or registering any point.

Champions League group stage: Messi's PSG face Man City, holders Chelsea paired with Juventus and draw in full

As the balls came out and the fates of the teams at next year's Cup of Nations were revealed, it was impossible not to be underwhelmed

In the days and hours leading up to the draw for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (which will take place in 2022, mind), it was possible to synthesize a frisson of expectation.

Delay, after all, only whets the appetite.

With the Covid-19 pandemic, concerns over the preparedness of Cameroon and a late change in timing putting the kibosh on any notion of the tournament staying on schedule, fans all over the continent were reduced to twiddling their thumbs and earning their bragging rights on the internet.

The draw, therefore, represented a clear chink of sunlight peeping through the grey.

Then the balls came out of the bowls, and reality hit with a dull, uncaring thud.

The 2021 edition will be only the second time 24 teams have ever graced the Afcon. As a format, it is still somewhat novel, and as such retains its sense of inherent wonkiness. Simply put, it is a nightmare logistically – there is the possibility that, days after playing their final group matches, a number of teams will be unaware whether they are staying or leaving – and mathematically.

Sporting integrity suffers as well.

Four from six third-place teams will progress on the basis of goal difference, but in employing this means of elimination, important context is lost.

In 2019, Kenya and DR Congo both finished with three points, but the East Africans were eliminated despite the fact they faced a tougher group (they finished behind the two teams that would go on to contest the Final) was responsible for their weaker goal difference; by contrast, the Leopards had much more manageable opposition in Uganda and Egypt to contend with.

Also, tacking on 20 matches just to eliminate eight teams does little for the spectacle, and more egregiously robs the Group Stage of any real jeopardy.

The very idea of a “Group of Death” is moot—it would take far too much for any of the top sides, further insulated by rankings-based pot allocations, to fail to emerge from their respective groups.

In 2019, Benin emerged from Group F (and then proceeded to reach the Quarter-finals) despite failing to win a single match. The bar really is that low.

And so it is that we are saddled with six groups that, while rich in narrative, are short on intrigue.

Beyond the meeting of the teams from Pots 1 and 2, there is not a lot to look forward to in terms of on-field competition.

Algeria and Ivory Coast is probably the tie of the Group Stage, as they rematch their quarter-final classic from two years ago.

Baghdad Bounedjah’s haunting dolour was the key image of a tense match, but since then Les Fennecs have come on in absolute bounds, taking a second title and putting together an unbeaten run that now stands at 27 matches.

They are once again the team to beat, bidding to retain the Afcon – a feat last achieved by fierce rivals Egypt in 2010.

The Pharaohs of course trounced Algeria in an ill-tempered semi-final en route; those were headier times for the seven-time champions under Hassan Shehata.

These days, they are a more modest outfit both in terms of their talent and results, as indicated by their presence in Pot 2. Nigeria’s Super Eagles will fancy their chances of emerging with their plumage intact in Group D, and may even find that exorcising their recent poor record against Egypt in competitive fixtures may be precisely the sort of statement that marks them out as contenders, having fallen at the semi-final stage in 2019.

That really is the function of much of the Group Stage: suggesting strength for the knockouts.

The only group where this may not hold is Group C, where Ghana’s recent crisis of confidence and identity may very well see them fall victim to the Comoros fairytale and the Gabon Bouanga-Aubameyang double act.

Coach CK Akonnor is a man under fire back home, and is trying to midwife a shift in generations while at it. There is a sense his only options are to surrender to either uncertainty or banality, and so his best bet given the format may well be to start cautiously and slowly introduce the more exciting elements as progress is secured.

Host Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco and Tunisia should all come through top of their respective logs, as should the aforementioned Algeria and Nigeria.

As far as dark horses go, Gabon will fancy their chances on debut: there is a crop attacking talent, flavoured in Italy, that is conducive to overwhelming a staid Mauritania and surprising a talented Mali side that is nevertheless constrained by coach Mohamed Magassouba.

Cape Verde have proved they have the beating of Cameroon already this year, and on their day are about as pleasant to experience as a kidney stone.

They are, however, a different proposition away from their stronghold in Praia, less impressive and not as inclined to seek to impose themselves.

If they can though, they could find Group A quite forgiving: Burkina Faso are not the force they were between 2013 and 2017, and Ethiopia are really only here because Niger picked the final matchday of qualifying to keep their first away clean sheet since 2015 at Madagascar.

At the end of the day though, for all that there are some arguments to be made for the format and the effects it can have on the growth of some of the continent’s smaller teams, Cape Verde against Ethiopia will not capture the imagination of very many viewers.

Neither, for that matter, will Sudan vs Guinea Bissau. It instead just feels like we are getting another round of qualifying, but this time without the usual home and away format. It may well do wonders for African football in the long run – and that is itself a dubious claim still – but it will do little for attention spans.
