Players Who Have Scored in Both the Champions League and Europa League Final

Amakhosi finally won to end a four-match winless run in the PSL as pressure had mounted on the Soweto giants

Kaizer Chiefs emphatically responded to criticism after a difficult patch in the Premier Soccer League by thrashing Chippa United 4-0 at FNB Stadium.

A Keagan Dolly brace as well as strikes from Khama Billiat and Lazarous Kambole handed the Soweto giants victory against their former coach Gavin Hunt.

It was a huge victory which eased pressure on Chiefs, as seen by how their fans celebrated on social media and the result came on a day club chairman Kaizer Motaung turned 77.

But some hard-to-please supporters felt they could have done more despite the heavy win.

The Hammers slipped to a first loss in four but will be out to recover immediately against a Toffees side with their own hopes of breaking into the European race this term.

Ahead of the game, Goal has the details of how to watch on TV, stream online, team news and more.

TV channel, live stream & how to watch

In the United States (US), Premier League matches can be watched live and on-demand with fuboTV (watch with a 7-day free trial).

New users can sign up for a free seven-day trial of the live sports streaming service, which can be accessed via iOS, Android, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV as well as on a web browser.

Team news & rosters

Position Everton roster
Goalkeepers Pickford, Begovic, Lonergan
Defenders Kenny, Holgate, Keane, Digne, Mina, Godfrey, Coleman, Branthwaite
Midfielders Allan, Delph, Townsend, Doucoure, Gomes, Gbamin, Davies, Whitaker
Forwards Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin, Gray, Iwobi, Tosun, Gordon, Rondon, Simms, Dobbin

Rafa Benitez might have not been a popular choice at Goodison Park upon his arrival - but the former Liverpool boss has not done much to suggest that he is the wrong man for the job so far.

His draw with Manchester United has kept the Toffees in touching distance of the top four, but the likely absences of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will hurt his firepower this time out.

Predicted Everton starting XI:  Pickford; Godfrey, Mina, Keane, Digne; Townsend, Doucoure, Allan, Gordon; Gray, Rondon.

Position West Ham roster
Goalkeepers Fabianski, Areola, Martin, Randolph

Midfielders Fornals, Lanzini, Vlasic, Noble, Soucek, Rice
Forwards Yarmolenko, Antono, Bowen, Benrahma

Having edged their way to a surprise European finish last term, David Moyes saw his side hit a snag with a late loss to Brentford just before the international break rolled around.

Before that, the Hammers had won three on the bounce, including against their manager's old club Manchester United, plus Rapid Vienna in the Europa League - and with Michail Antonio expected to lead the line, they will favour their prospects.

Predicted West Ham starting XI:  Fabianski; Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma; Antonio.

‘Dele-Bashiru's effort was onside’ – Reading’s Paunovic slams offside decision vs Barnsley

The 44-year-old Serbian tactician feels the effort by the Super Eagle deserved to count for the Royals at Madejski Stadium

Reading manager Veljko Paunovic believes the effort by Tom Dele-Bashiru was onside and should have been allowed to stand against Barnsley in their EFL Championship fixture on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international had the ball in the back of the net in the 27th minute, after breaking through the Barnsley line to latch onto an Ovie Ejaria cross before toeing the ball past custodian Bradley Collins from close range – but the offside flag was raised.

However, Reading went on to score in the 77th minute courtesy of John Swift as they claimed their sixth win of the campaign from 12 matches.

However, Paunovic revisited the decision by the referee to flag Dele-Bashiru, insisting the goal looked like it was onside.

“The goal that Tom Dele-Bashiru scored looked like it was onside and had that stood it would have changed the second half. That was the goal we were chasing in the first half, but it didn’t happen,” Paunovic told the club’s official website.

On the team picking up another win and keeping a clean sheet, Paunovic said: “It was a very important win for us. Another clean sheet. And I’m happy that we knew how to manage the game.

“In the first half we played very well, had some quick, creative build-up play…but we got stuck with finishing, we missed the end product in the final third.

“We knew that Barnsley, having struggled with results recently, would have gained much more confidence from going into the break at 0-0 and we knew they would come out and make it very difficult for us in the second half.”

Ahead of the game against Barnsley, Dele-Bashiru, who is on a season-long loan from Watford, called on his teammates to make sure they keep improving in every aspect of their game.

“It’s been good to get some rest in, recover and recuperate, but now I’m just eager to get going and start playing again,” the Super Eagle midfielder said.

“I think we’re just slowly upping our levels; we ended the last block of games really well with a win over Cardiff, and we just need to keep improving.

“Defensively we can still do better, equally we need to attack more. We’re still gelling as a team, and we’ll keep working.

“The mood has been great, the confidence is coming back amongst the boys, the players who’ve come in, they’ve really helped, and confidence is high.

“I’m loving my time here so far, everyone has been very welcoming, we have a good group, people are always free to talk and I’m really enjoying it.”

During the game against Barnsley, other African players who featured for Reading included the Ghanaian duo of Andy Yiadom and Abdul Rahman Baba.

Reading will next host struggling Blackpool at Madejski Stadium on Wednesday.

U.S. still lack grit, resolve needed for World Cup qualification fight

India won the SAFF Championship for the first time in 1993 and have won eight titles in total...

With eight titles to their name, India have been the dominant side in the history of the SAFF Championship. They won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1993 under coach Jiri Pesek, with defender VP Sathyan as the skipper. India's last win came under the tutelage of Stephen Constantine back in 2015. However, barring those two occasions, all the triumphs have come under an Indian head coach.

On October 16, Sunil Chhetri and co. won the eighth title after defeating Nepal 3-0 in the final. Head coach Igor Stimac had named a 23-man squad for the competition, but the Croatian had to manage without the services of centre back Sandesh Jhingan and goalkeeper Amrinder Singh.

Chhetri emerged as the top-scorer of the tournament with five goals to his name. Let us take a look at the managers who have won the SAFF Championship with India.

The reins of administration were taken over by Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah. FIFA warned PFF of consequences if the status quo was not restored. However, the situation remained unchanged which forced the FIFA Council to suspend Pakistan FA. Hence, no footballing activity can be undertaken by the national team.

Whereas, Bhutan decided to refrain from participating in the tournament after the Bhutanese government did not grant necessary permission to send the national team abroad due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chelsea's uncertain future: How sanctions, confusion are impacting their squad for next season

Igor Stimac's men outclassed Nepal to clinch their eighth SAFF Championship title...

India clinched their eighth SAFF Championship title with a convincing 3-0 win over Nepal on Saturday at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives.

The Blue Tigers remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. After a tough start to their campaign where they drew 1-1 and 0-0 against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Igor Stimac's side won their next two matches against Nepal and Maldives to reach the final where outclassed their opposition.

Former India international goalkeeper Henry Menezes expressed his happiness over India's triumph in Maldives and praised the Blue Tigers for the comeback.

"India is a strong team (amongst the SAFF nations), there's no doubt about that. It was about entertainment versus strategy. The fans want entertainment and simultaneously results. It is not possible every time. As it is, the team is coming out on the back of a pandemic that has disrupted the football calendar.

"Fortunately, we have experienced players that eased the tension after the first two matches (in SAFF). We peaked at the right time and we were never afraid of losing, so we dominated in all matches. From drawing against Sri Lanka to being the champions we have shown that we can turn things around," said the former India international goalkeeper.

Menezes hailed captain Sunil Chhetri's leadership as he suggested that the forward made the difference for India in the tournament.

He said, "Sunil Chhetri once again made the difference in the tournament. In the final also his opening goal was crucial. So, in the end, there is no doubt which is the strongest nation. The results did not come in the beginning but with that, the tactics changed and we played better in the next matches. Apart from India, Nepal was the strongest and we beat them formidably. Collectively India were fantastic.

"I was a bit concerned about the defence that it can collapse at any point, but they showed character and came up strong. The two goals in quick succession also helped them to get more confidence. The path was shown by Chhetri once again and the youngsters also complemented him very well. India will only grow stronger from here."

Menezes expressed his concern over the lack of game time of Indian players and wants the national team to play as many games as possible.

"The lack of matches is a concern for the national team. Also the pandemic complicated things. We don't know what is going to happen next. But ISL is coming and the players will get match practice. That is the most important thing. If we get to play more friendlies, nothing like it. Even if we play against SAFF nations, it will be a great thing," said Menezes.

The qualifiers for the Asian Cup is slated to get underway in 2022.

Santos striker Marcos Leonardo scouted by Europe's elite at Under-20 World Cup

After India's lacklustre display in the first two games of the SAFF Championship, coach Igor Stimac had to face criticism from several quarters. However, after India clinched their eighth title on Saturday night beating Nepal 3-0 in the final, the Croatian would be breathing a lot easier.

AIFF's (All India Football Federation) Technical Committee chairman Shyam Thapa has backed Stimac and appreciated his efforts to help the Indian team turn around their fortunes.

What did Shyam Thapa say?

"I had full faith in the team. I asked everyone to be patient. The first two matches were not the final, and in the final, they showed what they are. They kept the reputation of our country. We are still number one in the SAFF region. They played really well against Nepal. I am happy with the performance. We must appreciate the coach as well. His job is not easy. When India were playing badly, he was criticised and now he must be appreciated. Match by match they have improved and they kept their best for the final. But there is still a lot of scope to improve," stated the former India international to Goal.

Manvir Singh needs to improve

Thapa, who used to be a forward himself, believes that striker Manvir Singh must take his game a couple of notches higher in the national shirt. He also expressed his concerns about India's defence.

"I am not impressed with Manvir Singh. He is tall and he should harass the defenders more so that there is more space for Sunil (Chhetri). But I hardly saw him do that. He should jump more and win headers. He looked better in ISL but ordinary in SAFF. Sunil once again scored but we cannot depend on him all the time. Also in defence, they must improve. Gurpreet will not save you every time. Also, there is a dependence on Sandesh Jhingan. We have not found his replacement. We have a young midfield that is playing well. But they need to be more creative. They play in different teams in ISL and the national team does not meet often. So it takes a bit of time to gel and understand each other," he opined.

Covid-19 affected India's preparations

The Indian team did not play a single match in 2020 due to Covid-19. After playing in September 2019, they once again returned to the pitch on March 25, 2021 in a friendly against Oman. However, there was the Indian Super League (ISL) in between.

"The Indian team do not train together for a long period of time. It is a major problem for the coach. In between ISL, Covid he hardly gets time to conduct camps. Indian players do not have the quality of their European counterparts that they will camp for three-four days in an international break and still play beautiful football. We need time to understand each other and achieve that cohesion. Like the SAFF tournament, we need to play more matches like this. Otherwise, it is difficult to improve," Thapa expressed.

La Liga boss Tebas slams 'clandestine' Super League plans

Bobby Burns found himself in his colleague's bad books after erring in the build-up to Coleraine's decisive equaliser

Glentoran goalkeeper Aaron McCarey was left to regret a moment of madness in the Northern Ireland top-flight, as he was shown a red card for striking his own team-mate on Saturday after conceding a late equaliser.

The hosts looked set to take all three points against Coleraine as they led 2-1 with just 10 minutes to go.

But the away side hit back near the end to take a point - sparking a bizarre fight within the Glentoran ranks!

What happened?

With 79 minutes on the clock, Cathair Friel converted past McCarey to bring Coleraine back to 2-2.

Instead of looking to galvanise his team, though, the former Republic of Ireland U21 international turned his attentions to colleague Bobby Burns, who had made a mistake during the build-up to the equaliser.

The unlucky Glentoran man was flattened by his team-mate and dragged by his shirt before the rest of the side could intervene and separate the pair.

It was no surprise to see McCarey sent to the dressing room for his actions, leaving the hosts to see out the final minutes with 10 men.

Watch McCarey's incredible attack

Not the first incident this season

The football world has now seen two top-flight team-mate attacks in three months, with McCarey following the lead of Galatasaray player Marcao, who was dismissed from a match in August for punching and head-butting a team-mate.

Werder Bremen confirm talks with Man Utd over Chong deal

The Ivorian midfielder opened his Serie A goal campaign for the 2021-22 campaign as the Red and Blacks downed the Mastiffs

Franck Kessie scored his first Serie A goal of the 2021-22 campaign as AC Milan bounced back from two goals down to defeat Verona 3-2 on Saturday evening.

The Cote d’Ivoire international’s second-half effort from the penalty spot helped the hosts restore parity before Koray Gunter’s own goal gifted Stefano Pioli’s men all maximum points.

AC Milan came into the game following their 3-2 away at Atalanta, while the Mastiffs travelled to San Siro undefeated in their last four matches in all competitions.

Verona got off to a flying start in the seventh minute after Gianluca Caprari benefitted from a pass from captain Miguel Veloso to beat goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.

While the home team were still trying to launch a comeback, Igor Tudor’s side doubled their advantage in the 24 minute courtesy of Czech Republic international Antonin Barak who home from the penalty mark following Alessio Romagnoli’s challenge on Alessandro Prontera.

Things got worse for Pioli’s team as Ante Rebic was forced off injured in the 35th minute. He was subsequently replaced by Rafael Leao – who brought the needed pace to AC Milan’s attack.

A minute before the hour mark, the hosts reduced the deficit through Olivier Giroud who was set up by Leao.

The comeback was complete in the 76th minute as Kessie converted a penalty won by Samu Castillejo.

Victory was sealed for the 18-time Serie A kings two minutes later as Gunter turned the ball into his own net to send the home fans into raptures.

Despite a late rally by the visitors, Pioli’s men were able to hang on for their seventh win of the ongoing campaign.

Kessie as well as Senegal’s Fode Ballo-Toure were in action for the Red and Blacks. Whereas, Algeria’s Ismael Bennacer – who was named in the starting XI – was subbed off for Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 77th minute.

For Verona, Cameroonian midfielder Adrien Tameze was brought in for Miguel Veloso on the hour mark, but Ghana's Philip Yeboah and Cameroon's Martin Hongla played no role in the five-goal thriller.

AC Milan are guests of Bologna on October 23 in their next league outing. Before then, they travel to Portugal for a date with FC Porto on Tuesday.

Son backs 'strong' Alli, vows to overcome his own Spurs issues

The Ivorian and the Ghanaian starred for The Lancers in their league victory in the Dutch Eredivisie

Cote d’Ivoire striker Sebastien Haller was one of two scorers as Ajax registered a 2-0 away triumph over Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.

The former West Ham forward struck in the first half before Brazil winger David Neres added a second goal to seal three points in the matchday nine fixture at Abe Lenstra Stadion.

The win has taken Ajax, who also featured Ghana sensation Mohammed Kudus, four points clear at the top of the league table but the lead could be reduced by the outcome of the game between second-placed PSV Eindhoven and PEZ Zwolle in a late kick-off tie on Saturday.

Heerenveen, on the other hand, are seventh on the standings.

Saturday’s striker has put Haller on six goals in nine league appearances for The Lancers this season, having also recorded two assists.

The 24-year-old opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a tap-in after captain Dusan Tadic sent a low cross into the box on a quick break.

Heerenveen fought back and had chances to restore parity but after multiple failed attempts, Ajax doubled their lead in the second half when Neres, who had come on to replace Steven Berghuis in the 63rd minutes, directed a glancing header into the net after another beautiful delivery from Tadic.

Haller played the entire duration of the game but Ghana playmaker Kudus, who was making his first league start and his third Eredivisie outing of the season, was withdrawn shortly after the hour mark.

The 20-year-old made Erik ten Hag’s first XI on the back of a fine time with Ghana on international duty in 2022 World Cup qualifying where he starred in back-to-back games against Zimbabwe.

With a first league start of the season in the bag, the attacker will be hoping to clinch another starting berth when Ajax host Borussia Dortmund in Champions League football in midweek.

Morocco right-back Noussair Mazraoui, meanwhile, saw 75 minutes of action for Ajax in the game against Heerenveen.

Spezia 1-4 Juventus: Player Ratings as Cristiano Ronaldo Makes an Instant Impact on Return

The African football great's managerial career got off to a positive start as the People’s Elephant silenced the Senegalese side

Finidi George began his coaching career on a winning note as Enyimba picked up a 1-0 away win over Diambars FC in Saturday’s Caf Confederation fixture.

The 50-year-old was named as handler of the People’s Elephant in September after the Nigeria Professional Football League club parted ways with coach Fatai Osho following the expiration of his contract.

His first official assignment was the competition’s second round first leg fixture against the Senegalese side at the Stade Lat-Dior, Thies.

Nevertheless, the former Ajax star did not disappoint as he led the two-time African kings to a crucial away triumph.

Both teams put up a commanding display, but they were unable to get the much-needed goals in the keenly contested first half.

In the last 45 minutes, Diambars came out stronger but could not get past the strong-willed Nigerian backline, while goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo put up a good shift in goal.

Nonetheless, it was Enyimba who had the last laugh after winning a penalty three minutes from full time as Gabriel Orok was brought down in the box.

Super-sub Cyril Olisema Djiba stepped up to take the ensuing kick which he smartly fired past goalkeeper Francois Djiba.

Although the home team tried all they could to restore parity, albeit, they were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

Speaking to Goal after the game, goalkeeper Olorunleke claims the result is a morale booster for the Aba Elephants ahead of the return leg billed for October 24 at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

“It was a good result, and we are proud to emerge victorious away from home,” said Olorunleke.

“Diambars are a very solid side and they really gave us a good fight. This result is a morale booster for us and we hope to finish the work in Aba.

“We are keen to make Nigerians proud by not only reaching the group stage but by winning the competitions for the first time in our history.”

Winners on aggregate will progress to the play-off round where they must negotiate their way past one of the 16 losers of the Caf Champions League’s second round to reach the group stage.

Chelsea’s Rudiger questions Mendy’s omission from Ballon d'Or shortlist

The Germany international is clearly unimpressed by the judgment shown regarding the Senegal star's omission

Antonio Rudiger is baffled by Edouard Mendy’s exclusion from the Ballon d'Or shortlist.

The Germany international made this admission following the 29-year-old’s awe-inspiring display in Chelsea’s 1-0 triumph over Brentford on Saturday.

Mendy made several crucial saves to deny Thomas Frank’s men a chance to restore parity after Chelsea took the lead through Ben Chilwell on the stroke of half-time.

Buoyed by that performance, Rudiger took to social media to question why the African goalie did not make the cut of the best footballers in the world.

“Someone explain why he’s not nominated for the Ballon d'Or? What a performance…Edouard Mendy,” the former AS Roma and VfB Stuttgart star tweeted.

The 30-man list of the most illustrious individual prize in football was revealed on Friday by France Football, with the Senegal international conspicuously missing.

Mendy has been a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s squad following his arrival at Stamford Bridge from Ligue 1 side Rennes.

In the 2020-21 campaign, he helped the Londoners win the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Super Cup, while keeping Spain international Kepa Arrizabalaga glued to the substitutes bench.

Manager Tuchel also raved about his goalkeeper’s performance.

“They were always dangerous on set pieces, they put a lot of free-kicks, corners, free-kicks into your box so it’s a constant threat and he was very strong and very concentrated also in our build-up play, a very good performance,” he told the club website.

Meanwhile, ex-England star Gary Neville hailed the Senegalese as the key difference as the Blues stay in contention for the league diadem.

“He was absolutely brilliant,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“If you’re going to win the title you will have games in a season where you maybe don’t deserve to win, but your goalkeeper makes two or three world-class saves.

“He has made that difference. Kepa in goal last season for Chelsea was a big problem, goals were going in far too easily.

“It’s a lot more difficult to score against Chelsea, not just because of changing to the back-five with Thomas Tuchel brought in - but also the goalkeeper.”

Mendy is expected to be in goal when Chelsea take on Swedish top-flight side Malmo FF in Wednesday’s Champions League encounter.

Samuel Kalu vs Moses Simon: Nigeria’s misunderstood widemen clash in Bordeaux

The wide attackers divide opinion among fans of the Super Eagles, but is the perceived indifference to the pair justified?

You’d be hard-pressed to find Nigerians lining up to watch Sunday’s Ligue 1 encounter between Bordeaux and Nantes, despite the potential presence of Samuel Kalu and Moses Simon.

Both players may have represented the Super Eagles a combined 56 times, with the Nantes star nearing a half-century of appearances, but neither have won over the West African faithful.

Simon’s erratic nature in possession often defeats all the industry and intent, while there’s a nagging feeling that Kalu really can’t be relied on due to concerns over his health, intermittent injuries, unexplained absences and a lack of application.

For the more experienced wide attacker, the disparate performances for club and country still beggar belief.

When Simon features for Antoine Kombouare’s Canaries, there’s a different player, a difference maker and the team’s principal source of creativity. In Nigeria’s colours, however, the 26-year-old’s end product exasperates fans and neutrals alike.

Even though the ex-Gent man fashioned the African giants’ biggest chance in the 1-0 defeat by the Central African Republic last Friday, hardly anything else he attempted came off. His deliveries from set-pieces were either under or over-hit, mostly failing to get beyond the man at the near post or drifting beyond anyone on the rare occasions he cleared the first man.

Juxtapose this with life in Ligue 1 where he currently carries the Canaries’ creative burden from open play or set-pieces, and questions emerge over the contrasting nature of his end product for club and country.

Simon’s fashioned five chances termed big chances in nine appearances in 2021/22—only Kylian Mbappe and Andy Delort have created higher.

With 2.7 key passes per game at this stage of the season, the Nigerian ranks higher than every player in the division except Olympique de Marseille’s Dimitri Payet and his volume of key passes in total (24) betters all but Stade Rennes’ Benjamin Bourigeaud.

For a player who’s had an almost storming start to the season with Nantes, Moses Simon’s inability to replicate those performances under Gernot Rohr has, at times, been beyond one’s grasp.

Indeed, Kombouare will count on the in-form attacker to come up trumps on Sunday when Les Canaries visit Bordeaux, looking to end an extended run without a positive result at the Matmut Atlantic.

The Girondins have dominated proceedings in this encounter in the last seven years, remaining unbeaten in that time. With five wins and two draws on their travels to Bordeaux in recent years, it’s no surprise the Nantes boss called on his team to be brave in Sunday’s Atlantic Derby.

“We will have to be strong; we also have to be able to do whatever it takes to cause them problems,” Kombouare remarked on Friday. “We must be vigilant at the back, but we must be brave offensively. I do not want to see a repeat of Reims (they lost 3-1), in which we were timid, especially in attack.

“Boys like Ludo (Blas), Randal (Kolo Muani), Moses (Simon) can carry this team.”

Simon has probably been the club’s go-to in the final third in 2021/22, evidenced by the raw numbers and underlying statistics.

The 26-year-old’s 4.64 shot-creating actions place him ninth in Ligue 1 and 0.88 goal-creating actions puts him fifth in the French top flight. No other Nantes player features in the top 20 for average SCAs or GCAs, further emphasising his importance to the team in open play and from dead-ball situations.

On Sunday, the oft-criticised Simon faces his countryman who isn’t far from censure either. Kalu’s development has stalled in the last 18 to 24 months owing to inconsistent game time but he remains a threat in possession with his ball-carrying and inclination to force the issue—he currently outranks every colleague for progressive carries per 90.

Despite his paucity of minutes in the opening weeks, the Bordeaux man still ranks sixth for passes into the final third and completed passes into the 18-yard box, while he sits seventh for progressive passes per 90.

While Simon is an important facet of Nantes’ attack, Kalu has so far been a peripheral component under Vladimir Petkovic who took charge after a successful Euro 2020 with Switzerland in the summer.

Both men are likely to play varying parts on Sunday evening as their sides look to secure positive results in the Atlantic Derby.

Regardless of their showings, though, you sense it wouldn’t move the needle with Nigerians, whose opinions of Simon and Kalu appear to be set in stone.

'We deserved to lose' - Man Utd need more 'experience & arrogance', says Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges dropped out of the top four as they fell to defeat to Leicester

Paul Pogba could not hide his disappointment after seeing Manchester United go down to Leicester City on Saturday, admitting that his side deserved to lose the Premier League clash.

The Red Devils are now winless in their last three league outings, after making a brilliant start to the 2021-22 season.

They will now finish the weekend outside the top four as they come to terms with a convincing 4-2 defeat at the King Power Stadium.

What was said?

“To be honest, we have been having these kind of games for a long time," Pogba fired to the BBC after the final whistle on Saturday.

"We have not found the problem, conceding easy goals, stupid goals. We need to be more mature, play with more experience and arrogance in a good way.

"We need to find something, we need to change."

The bigger picture

Saturday's reverse ended an impressive run for United away from Old Trafford.

The club had previously gone 30 games unbeaten on the road, stretching back to January 2020's 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Additionally, not since 2019's 4-0 drubbing against Everton had United conceded four goals away from home in a single game.

They will now hope for better fortunes in the Champions League, with Atalanta visiting Old Trafford on Wednesday.

LIVE: Everton vs Manchester United

The Brazilians last won Africa’s elite club competition in 2016 and have been trying to replicate that without success

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rhulani Mokwena has boldly declared that winning this season’s Caf Champions League title is their prime objective.

The South Africans begin their Champions League campaign in a first-round, first leg match away at Maniema Union in DR Congo at Stade Joseph Kabila Kabange on Sunday.

While most coaches are usually diplomatic about their Champions League intentions, Mokwena has talked straight about their objectives as he also declared readiness for Maniema.

“We try to win every match and the players know this. We understand winning the Champions League is a culmination of winning every single game and that is our objective for this season,” Mokwena told the media.

“We have done our homework. The first part is sending a delegation to try to find out a little more about the conditions. So we had an advance team that arrived a couple of days prior to us coming here.

“We are as ready as we can be. We shouldn’t be here if we were not ready. We had to come prepared to win the match

“We believe we have the best possibilities with the preparations we have had. We are here to win a football match. For us, preparation eliminates fear and that’s what we want. We want to try and dominate the game and play the best game we possibly can.”

It is the first time ever for Sundowns to clash against Maniema and Mokwena says they have attained as much information as possible on their opponents who are not well known in South Africa.

They are currently third in the DR Congo domestic league, having played four games so far.

“We know a lot about them [Maniema], we have done a lot behind the scenes to analyse," added Mokwena.

“We checked not only the last two matches they played in these qualifiers, we also watched their last two domestic league games against Renaissance and AS Vita.

“We know the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition. We know their reliance on a player like [Taboria] Simete from the back with balls being delivered to the strikers on top. They present different problems but the most consistent is the number 8 [Likwela] Yelemaya.

“We have to be very careful and treat them with a lot of respect and humility but approach the game with the desire to win.”

To reach this stage of the Champions League, Maniema went past Gabonese side Bouenguidi.
