Thiago feels Liverpool need 'small miracle' to grab Champions League place

The Spain midfielder netted his first goal for Liverpool in their win over Southampton, a result which keeps their European hopes alive

Thiago Alcantara feels Liverpool require a “small miracle” to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Following draws with Leeds and Newcastle, Liverpool revived their hopes with a 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

The Reds require other sides, Leicester and West Ham the most notable, to slip up if they are to snatch a place in the top four.

What has been said?

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp feels victories in their final four games will be enough, but Thiago is not quite as confident.

“We have to keep fighting until the end with this small chance,” Thiago, who scored his first goal for the club against Southampton, told Sky Sports. “It is an amazing feeling [to score] but the most important thing is the three points.

“We keep fighting for a small miracle.

"I think we had chances in the past that didn't always go for us but the window is open so we try to go through the window."

Liverpool’s run-in

The Reds sit on 57 points from 34 games, six adrift of Leicester who have played a game more.

West Ham are sandwiched between the two with 58 points from 34 games, while Chelsea are on 64 points from 35 games and look well set after beating Manchester City on Saturday but they have an FA Cup final and Champions League final to distract them.

Liverpool face road trips in three of their final four games, before concluding the season at home to Crystal Palace with fans in attendance at Anfield.

The Reds travel to Manchester United on Thursday, face West Brom on May 16, Burnley on May 19 and Crystal Palace on May 23.
