Enyimba 2-1 Al Merreikh (2-4 on agg): People's Elephant crash out of Caf Champions League

Despite their victory in the return leg, Fatai Osho’s men have failed to progress to the competition’s group phase

Enyimba have bowed out of the 2020-21 Caf Champions League despite their 2-1 victory over Al Merreikh on Wednesday.

Having bowed 3-0 in the first round, first leg clash in Omdurman thanks to Saif Terry’s hat-trick, the People’s Elephant needed to defeat the Sudanese giants convincingly in Aba.

However, that was not the case and the two-time African kings kissed the competition goodbye.

In the keenly contested affair at the Enyimba International Stadium, it was Didier Gomes Da Rosa’s men who took the lead through Terry in the eighth minute.

However, the lead only lasted for six minutes as Victor Mbaoma slotted past impressive Munjid Al-Neel in the 14th minute.

That equaliser was a morale booster for the hosts, albeit, they fluffed several scoring opportunities.

Chances were few for the visitors but they looked dangerous on the counter-attack while forcing some smart saves from goalkeeper Olufemi Kayode, who was the captain of the Nigerian side.

Needing four goals to qualify at the expense of the Leaders, Enyimba surged forward at the commencement of the last 45 minutes.

They were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute following a reckless challenge on Samad Kadiri from an Al Merreikh defender. Mbaoma converted the ensuing kick to complete his double on the day.

The Nigerians attacked in their numbers but were poor in the final third with Mbaoma and Kadiri the main culprits.

Even with the introduction of Gabriel Orok and Anthony Omaka for Sadiq Abubakar and Dare Olatunji, Osho’s side were unable to break down the stubborn visitors.

After 90 minutes, it was the 21-time Sudan Premier League champions who progressed to the group stage in a 4-2 aggregate win.

Enyimba now join the likes of Morocco’s Raja Casablanca, Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien, Ghana’s Asante Kotoko, Kenya’s Gor Mahia and South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in the play-off round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Despite enjoying success on the continent by winning consecutive African titles in 2003 and 2004, the eight-time Nigeria Professional Football League kings have failed to make an impression on the continent recently while changing coaches regularly.

Former Ghana star Agyemang-Badu calls for patience with Akonnor

The former Udinese midfielder believes the Black Stars coach is capable of leading the team to continental glory

Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu believes national team coach CK Akonnor should not be pressured to win the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars are desperately in the search for a first title since winning the last of their four championships in Libya in 1982.

Akonnor was appointed head coach of the West Africans in January last year, taking over from James Kwasi Appiah and tasked to win the Afcon tournament in 2022, as well as secure Ghana qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

"There is a possibility Ghana can win the Afcon but we shouldn’t put pressure on the team and the coach because he is trying to rebuild a new team," Badu, who recently announced retirement from international duty, told 3 Sports.

"Rebuilding a team like the Black Stars is not an easy job for the coach because the national team is not like club level where you will get the players throughout the year to train with them to get cohesion and to know each other.

“For national team, every three months, you have a game; today you might have great form, the next day, the star player might be injured and you will have to replace that kind of player, so it's always difficult, they have quality, but I think they need time."

Akonnor's reign began on a bad note as the Black Stars suffered a 3-0 loss to Mali in a friendly fixture in October. Days later, the team made amends with a 5-1 thrashing of Asian champions and 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar in a second friendly.

A month later, Ghana beat Sudan 2-0 in a 2022 Afcon home qualifier but lost 1-0 in the reverse fixture on the road.

“It’s not about me. It’s about us," Akonnor told TV3 in May last year.

"Over 30 years we’ve not won Afcon. I don’t want to be just another coach who comes in to manage Ghana and goes and then it’s the same story.

"I want us to work and make an impact, be relevant.”

At the last Afcon tournament, Ghana, under Appiah, were eliminated by Tunisia in the Round of 16.

It was the first time the team failed to reach the quarter-final of the competition since 2006.

Eriksen's future in the hands of the club, says Inter boss Conte

The midfielder looks set to leave this month having struggled to truly get settled in Italy

Inter manager Antonio Conte says that Christian Eriksen's future is in the hands of the club as the Danish midfielder seems destined for an exit.

Eriksen joined Inter last January, making the move from Tottenham in a deal worth a reported €20 million (£17m/$22m).

The former Spurs midfielder signed a four-year contract with the Italian side but, in recent weeks, it has become clear that he is unlikely to see out that four-year deal.

Eriksen has made just 12 appearances this season and has scored zero goals after scoring four times in 26 outings last campaign.

Having fallen out of Conte's plans, Eriksen appears set for an exit, with CEO Giuseppe Marotta confirming in December that the playmaker will be transfer listed in January.

"He has struggled to settle into the squad, he is not functional to the squad. That’s just an objective fact," Marotta told Sky Italy.

Eriksen played the final 20 minutes of Wednesday's clash with Sampdoria as Inter fell 2-1.

And, after the match, Conte was asked about Eriksen's situation and whether or not anything has changed since Marotta's statement.

“I try to make the most of the options available based on the situation," he said. "I am at the complete disposal of the club and any decision they make on the transfer market, so there’s nothing else I can do.

“The club knows perfectly well if there need to be players going out or coming in. I just work, the way I have done since the moment I arrived at Inter. Any decision that is made will always be shared by me.”

One potential landing spot for Eriksen is Paris Saint-Germain, now managed by Mauricio Pochettino, who worked with the playmaker for five seasons at Spurs.

When asked about Eriksen, Pochettino said he is "looking at all the possibilities", playing coy when it comes to potential transfers.

Inter currently sit second in Serie A, sitting one point behind rivals AC Milan who have a game in hand.

Conte and co. will face a short turnaround following Wednesday's loss as Inter travel to Rome to take on Roma on Sunday.

LIVE: Athletic Club vs Barcelona

It may be Marcelino's first game in charge of Athletic but the former Valencia boss faces an unwanted record if Athletic lose here. None of Athletic's last five managers have lost on their debut for the club since Mane in 2006. What more can the Basque side offer here to test Barca further?

Barca have cruised here despite facing the setback of Williams' early goal. Athletic started the game at a frightening pace until Pedri levelled for Barca 15 minutes in. Since then the hosts have been quiet, allowing Messi to give Barca the lead. More to come!

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-2 BARCELONA

45' There'll be two added minutes at the end of this half.

44' Athletic have done precious little in an attacking sense since conceding an equaliser. Marcelino needs more from his team in the second half.

42' Barca look comfortable as we approach half-time but they'd like another goal. Messi gets a cute pass from Griezmann and fires wide of the right-hand post.

40' Barca go looking for a quick third goal. Griezmann unleashes a venomous shot from the left of the box that Simon pushes away. Dembele stretches but can't quite reach it to place into the net.

39' Messi has been directly involved in 24 goals against Athletic in 26 La Liga games now. He'd gone three games without scoring against them prior to his goal here.

37' Griezmann wins a free-kick down the left as he's brought down by Williams. Barca can't create very much from the free-kick.

35' Dest positions himself well to get rid of Capa's pacy low cross from the right. Muniain was lurking at the far post.

34' Barca have overtaken Athletic in shots now - it's five to the visitors and four to the hosts. Athletic haven't had a shot since Barca equalised.

33' Barca knock the ball around patiently outside Athletic's box, trying to craft a decent opening. Dembele cuts inside from the right and curls an effort towards Simon. The Athletic keeper can't hold it at first but soon controls it at the second attempt.

30' Berchiche pulls up with a thigh strain after beating Dembele near the touchline. The left-back looks in some discomfort. He'll have to be replaced.

28' Simon rushes out of his goal to prevent Messi from latching onto Dembele's throughball. It's a good game, this.

26' Berchiche's low cross from the left isn't convincingly cleared by Barca's defenders. Athletic's pace in forward areas is continuing to worry the visitors.

24' Messi gets caught offside from Busquet's pass and Athletic have the chance to go upfield for the first time in a while. Garcia is frustrated as he challenges for a high ball with Busquets and gives away a free-kick.

22' Barca are starting to dominate proceedings now. Alba has a low effort saved from the left of the box. It's another Barca corner which Athletic see off.

20' Athletic are having to defend for the moment. Garcia tugs on de Jong's shirt and gives away a foul in the centre of the pitch.

18' We've had seven shots in the opening 15 minutes of this game - four for Athletic and three for Barca. It bodes well for the rest of the match.

16' Barca are starting to settle after that frantic start. The visitors win a corner down their left off Capa. Athletic clear. Dembele is caught offside from Messi's throughball.

13' Dembele receives a pass from Messi and lets rip from the right edge of the box, inspiring Simon to tip it away. Athletic survive the resulting Barca corner.

12' Barca are just asking for trouble if they continue to play this high up the pitch. Williams gets in behind the visitors' defence again, firing straight at ter Stegen. It's a warning that more is to come from Athletic.

11' Athletic's captain Munain, playing on the left flank, has a pop from a tight angle. It's blocked by a Barca defender.

9' There's a brief chance for the players to take a breath as Pedri is fouled by Garcia. There's no way the game can stay at this speed for 90 minutes.

7' What a pace this game has started at. Dest gets on the end of Griezmann's pass and fires towards goal, forcing a save from Athletic's goalkeeper Simon. Barca take the corner and Lenglet is caught offside when Dembele eventually sends the ball in.

5' Athletic have really raced out of the traps here. Their left-back Berchiche races into the box on the counter-attack after a Barca attack breaks down and lashes a shot into the side netting. It could be 2-0 already.

1' We're underway here in Bilbao!

The two sides are out on the San Mames pitch. Athletic are wearing their usual red and white striped shirts and black shorts. Barca are in their yellow away strip.

Athletic have lost just one of their last four La Liga games against Barcelona and are unbeaten in the sides' last two meetings here at San Mames. However, Athletic haven't gone three games in a row without losing against Barca since 2013. Barcelona have lost just one of their last 17 visits to Basque sides though. Will Barca make it three away wins in a row?

There's just the one change to Athletic from their 1-0 win over Elche as Capa starts at right-back. Berenguer drops to the bench. Barca make a single change too from their away win over Huesca as Griezmann starts ahead of Braithwaite.

SUBS: Riqui Puig, Junior Firpo, Miralem Pjanic, Samuel Umtiti, Konrad De la Fuente, Trincao, Inaki Pena, Neto, Martin Braithwaite, Oscar Mingueza.

BARCELONA (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Sergino Dest, Ronald Araujo, Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba; Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri; Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi (c), Ousmane Dembele.

SUBS: Inigo Vicente, Ibai Gomez, Dani Garcia, Mikel Balenziaga, Asier Villalibre, Kenan Kodro, Oihan Sancet, Jon Morcillo, Inigo Cordoba, Inigo Lekue, Jokin Ezkieta, Alex Berenguer.

ATHLETIC BILBAO (4-4-2): Unai Simon; Ander Capa, Unai Nunez, Inigo Martinez, Yuri; Oscar De Marcos, Mikel Vesga, Unai Vencedor, Iker Muniain (c); Inaki Williams, Raul Garcia.

Athletic, meanwhile, are under new management after a weekend win against Elche was not enough to save Gaizka Garitano's job. It's Marcelino's first job since leaving Valencia in September 2019. No doubt a victory for the hosts here would be a great start to their new era.

Barcelona arrive in Bilbao looking to lift themselves to third in La Liga. Ronald Koeman's side sit fifth currently and are way off the pace in the title race behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. A win here would mark a tentative return to more familiar territory.

Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of this La Liga match between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona at San Mames Stadium.

LIVE: Saint-Etienne vs PSG

Both Navas and Moulin have made vital saves to keep the scoreline at 1-1, and there is every chance we get more goals in the second 45 minutes. PSG need to try and control the game better if they can, but in fairness to Saint-Etienne, they are making life very difficult for the league champions.

The referee brings an entertaining first half to a close and Saint-Etienne have given an excellent account of themselves. Pochettino has not had it all his own way during his first match in charge, with Hamouma's strike opening the scoring for the home side. Thankfully for PSG, Kean equalised within one minute.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME - SAINT-ETIENNE 1-1 PSG.

45' PSG have weathered the storm for now, and there will be one minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

43' Big end to the half from Saint-Etienne, they have won three corners in a row, with PSG struggling to keep them at bay.

42' NAVAS!! The PSG goalkeeper makes his second big save of the night, this time to deny Debuchy. The former Arsenal right-back found space on the edge of the box before unleashing a volley towards the bottom corner. Navas has reacted brilliantly to turn his effort away from goal, that could have been some goal!

40' Five minutes to go before half-time, can either of these two find a goal before the break?

38' Play is back underway, and after having his shoulder checked over, Debuchy is back and fit to carry on.

37' Debuchy goes down in a heap after being sandwiched by Mbappe and Gueye. Mbappe gave him a little nudge, while Gueye has smashed into him and conceded a free-kick. He remains on the turf, and the Saint-Etienne medical team are making their way onto the pitch.

34' Di Maria cuts inside and makes his way into the box, readying himself to attack Dagba's cross. He manages to latch onto the end of the pass, but he puts too much power behind his volley and fires the ball over the crossbar.

32' If Saint-Etienne are to get anything from this match, Moukoudi is likely to play a big part. He nearly scored in the first few minutes, while he has made several important clearances at the opposite end of the pitch.

30' While he already has an assist, Verratti needs to work with Herrera and Gueye a little more to try and dominate the midfield battle. The Italy international is doing what he can to push forward, but his side needs him to connect the play a little more if possible.

27' Pochettino's men have enjoyed over 70 per cent possession so far, but they need to gain a little more control to make it count.

25' Before today's match, PSG had kept a clean sheet on ten occasions in Ligue 1 this season. No other team from the top five European leagues has more, but Saint-Etienne have already tarnished that record this evening.

21' This is a big test for Pochettino now as he tries to get his players back on the front foot.

16' As expected, PSG are starting to dictate the tempo of the game and dominate possession.

14' Three significant opportunities in just four minutes, this game could be a cracker if it carries on in the same vein.

12' WHAT A SAVE!!! Moulin keeps the game goalless thanks to a sublime one-handed stop, this time from a Marquinhos header. The visitors won a corner, which was met by Marquinhos but he is denied thanks to Moulin's heroic efforts.

10' KEAN! Just seconds after seeing Moukoudi go close, Kean tries his luck at the other end. Herrera's lofted throughball released the on-loan striker, but Moulin saved his effort.

9' SAVE!! Saint-Etienne win another corner and Moukoudi sees a powerful header saved by Navas at his near post. The centre-back towered over several defenders before heading for goal, but Navas was on hand to keep him at bay.

6' We are still just a few minutes into the game, but the pace is solid, with both sides keen to get the ball down and play quickly.

4' Kean is currently playing through the middle for PSG, with Mbappe on the left and Di Maria on the right. That may change throughout the night, but Pochettino has gone for pace down the flanks for the time being.

2' The home side have made a lively start here, winning a corner, while Debuchy has also seen a header flash wide of the post.

1' We are underway, Saint-Etienne in their green and white home strip, PSG will wear their purple away kit this evening.

The two teams are now on the field of play and kick-off is moments away.

Saint-Etienne will need to be at their best if they want to improve their record against PSG. They have won none of their last 14 league games against PSG, failing to score in nine of their previous 12 meetings.

After the 2-2 draw with Monaco before Christmas, Saint-Etienne boss Claude Puel makes five changes to his starting XI. Makoudi, Retsos, Youssouf, Nordin and Hamouma get the chance to impress, while Sow, Trauco, Camara, Noupa and Aouchiche drop out. In his first game in charge, Pochettino makes just two alterations to the team that beat Strasbourg 4-0. Gueye and Kean come in for Pembele and Rafinha.

SUBS: Alexandre Letellier, Timothee Pembele, Sergio Rico, Bandiougou Fadiga, Pablo Sarabia, Kays Ruiz-Atil, Julian Draxler, Abdou Diallo, Xavi Simons.

PSG (4-3-3): Keylor Navas; Colin Dagba, Thilo Kehrer, Marquinhos, Mitchel Bakker; Idrissa Gueye, Marco Verratti, Ander Herrera; Angel Di Maria, Moise Kean, Kylian Mbappe.

SUBS: Charles Abi, Maxence Rivera, Baptiste Gabard, Stefan Bajic, Adil Aouchiche, Miguel Trauco, Ryad Boudebouz, Alpha Sissoko, Aïmen Moueffek.

SAINT-ETIENNE (4-2-3-1): Jessy Moulin; Mathieu Debuchy, Harold Moukoudi, Timothee Kolodziejczak, Panagiotis Retsos; Zaydou Youssouf, Arnaud Nordin; Kevin Monnet-Paquet, Lucas Gourna Douath, Romain Hamouma; Denis Bouanga.

Despite their impressive results of late, Saint-Etienne are 14th in the league table and just six points above the relegation zone. On the other hand, PSG can return to the top of the Ligue 1 table if results go their way. Lyon and Lille are joint-top on 36 points, with PSG one point worse off in third.

Fourteen months after his Tottenham exit, Pochettino returns to the dugout with a point to prove. The Argentinean was linked with several high-profile jobs, but he joined PSG earlier this month, and he has had little time to prepare for the clash with Saint-Etienne. PSG are unbeaten in their last three matches, while the home side have not lost in six games.

Hello and welcome to today's live coverage of the Ligue 1 meeting between Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain. This evening's game is a massive occasion for Mauricio Pochettino, who takes charge of PSG for the first time since replacing Thomas Tuchel.

Soweto Derby: 'They’ll come out guns blazing' Swallows FC coach Truter wary of Orlando Pirates

The Cape Town-born tactician made it clear that his troops will be prepared for the Buccaneers

Swallows FC head coach Brandon Trutter is wary of a wounded Orlando Pirates side ahead of the original Soweto Derby clash.

The two teams are set to meet in an eagerly-anticipated Premier Soccer League (PSL) encounter at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Pirates suffered their maiden defeat of the season last weekend when they succumbed to a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in a league game in Tshwane.

They will be up against a Swallows side which remains undefeated this term and they are coming off a 3-2 win over Cape Town City in Soweto on Tuesday.

Truter lauded Pirates as a very offensive-minded team, but he explained that his side will be prepared for Bucs and they will have to keep it tight at the back.

“Pirates are a very different kettle of fish. I think they’re a very dynamic‚ very offensive-minded team. I think it’s going to be very different to what we’ve faced‚” Truter was quoted as saying on The Sowetan

“I think the Sunday game will be a very good test of our character and strength in this league. We’ll prepare as best as we can because it’s their home game."

Pirates are inactive in midweek after their Caf Confederation Cup match against Angolan side Sagrada Esperanca was cancelled after the latter withdrew from the competition

Truter, who was named PSL Coach of the Month for October/November, expects the Buccaneers to come out guns blazing as they are well-rested team

“And so‚ yeah‚ with their previous result as well [Pirates lost 1-0 to Sundowns]‚ I think they’re a bit under pressure to get the result and also I think they’ll be playing their first match this week," he added.

“So, they’ll be the fresher team and they have their backs to the wall – they’ll come out [all] guns blazing. It’s a about us‚ keeping it very tight at the back."

It will be the first meeting between Swallows and Pirates since December 2014 and that league encounter ended in a 1-1 draw at Dobsonville Stadium.

Siyabonga Nomvethe opened the scoring for Beautiful Birds, but his first-half strike was cancelled out by Lehlohonolo Majoro's 77th-minute goal.

LIVE: AC Milan vs Juventus

56' CLOSE! Milan don't clear their lines following the free-kick and Bentancur swings another cross into the box. He picks out Ramsey, who is unmarked at the far post, but he sends his effort into the side netting.

54' Ronaldo is quickly being closed down by the Milan defenders again, so he tries to poke the ball into Bentancur, who is making a run to the edge of the box. Kjaer reads it well though and gets across to intercept it.

52' Milan are enjoying the third-longest scoring streak in consecutive matches in Serie A, netting in their last 36. In the history of the competition, there have only been two longer streaks, both by Juventus (43 in 2014 and 44 in 2017).

50' Rabiot breaks following a Milan attack and he slots it into Ronaldo. He's quickly closed down by three Milan defenders but manages to squeeze the ball towards Dybala. There's too much on it though and Donnarumma comes out to clear it.

48' SAVE! Milan have made a bright start to the second half and Dalot tests Szczesny with the first chance of the half. He drills his shot low on goal from the edge of the box and the keeper gets down to push it away.

46' Milan get us back underway for the second half!

Both managers will be fairly pleased with the performances so far, but Juventus were sloppy in their own half which let Milan in on goal so Pirlo will want that to change in the second half. As for Milan, they've created more chances, but Pioli will want them to be more clinical after the break.

It's level at the break between Milan and Juventus. The visitors came close when Chiesa rattled the post with his shot following a corner before the midfielder gave them the lead just minutes later when he latched onto Dybala's brilliant flick and found the bottom corner. Calabria equalised by picking out the top corner to finish a quick break by Milan.

45' + 1' HALF-TIME: MILAN 1-1 JUVENTUS.

45' Chiesa is being given a lot of space to run into down the right and he loops a deep cross into the box. He's looking to pick out Ronaldo at the far post, but it's too high and sails straight out of play.

43' Juventus are looking to put themselves quickly back in the lead and a pocket of space opens up for Ramsey on the edge of the box. There's no power on the shot though and it's a comfortable save for Donnarumma.

39' It's patient play from Juventus at the moment as they play out from the back and try to find a way in behind Milan. Frabotta makes a good run down the left, but there's no one up with him and he's forced to go backwards.

37' Chiesa has been involved in five goals against Milan in Serie A (two goals, three assists) - against no side has he had a hand in more goals in the competition.

35' GOOD SAVE! Hauge touches the ball onto Calhanoglu on the edge of the box, but it's just out of his reach and as Ramsey steps across to block him, he ends up sending the ball flying back towards his own goal. Szczesny dives across and manages to push it away.

33' Hauge squares the ball to Calabria on the edge of the box and he has time to take a touch and set himself before hitting the shot. He's looking for the top-right corner, but his shot is always rising and flies over the bar.

31' There are shouts from the Milan players for a penalty as they feel that it struck Bonucci's hand when he blocked Calhanoglu's shot. His arm was tight to his body though and the referee waves the claims away.

29' Juventus break quickly from a corner with Frabotta driving down the left. His cross is overhit but it comes out to Chiesa on the opposite side. He takes it around Hernandez before swinging the ball into the box, but this one is blocked by Kjaer.

27' GOOD SAVE! Ramsey gives the ball away cheaply and Calhanoglu intercepts it for Milan before playing in Leao. He's at a tight angle on the left of the box when he drills his shot on goal and Szczesny pushes it away at his near post.

26' Milan are keeping possession well at the moment as they try to open up some space to get in behind Juventus. Dalot cuts inside from the right to swing a cross into the box, but it's cleared by Bonucci.

24' SAVE! It's a great run through the middle by Chiesa who rides the challenge from Calabria to get to the edge of the box. He drills his shot on target and Donnarumma is there to parry it away.

22' CLOSE! Calhanoglu plays a good throughball into Leao and he turns away from Bonucci to open up a pocket of space just outside the box. He curls his effort towards the far top corner, but it's just wide of the post.

20' Juventus are on the attack again now and Milan just can't get close to them. They're asking for an offside against Ramsey, but it doesn't come, and he's running in on goal. He's waiting for support though which forces him wide and gives the hosts time to get back.

17' Juventus are starting to push forward quicker now and are getting in behind Milan more. Ramsey turns away from Kessie and tries to curl a pass into Dybala between the two defenders, but it's intercepted by Romagnoli.

15' OFF THE POST! Milan just can't clear the corner that was swung into the box and Juventus keep it alive to pick out Chiesa on the edge of the box. It's a great strike from him, and Donnarumma is beaten, but it rebounds back of the far post.

13' Having won 4-2 back in July 2020, Milan are looking to win back-to-back games against Juventus in Serie A for the first time since 2010, under Leonardo.

11' Milan are closing down Juventus high up the field and forcing them into mistakes. This time, Kessie nicks it off Rabiot in midfield, but his pass into Hauge is cut out by Danilo.

9' Dybala makes a driving run through midfield, getting away from three Milan defenders before going to ground, but the referee waves his claims for a free-kick away. The ball falls to Frabotta though and he fires his shot just over the bar.

7' SAVE! Bentancur's touch is poor and he has it nicked off him by Castillejo in his own box. He turns away from him before hitting a low shot to the near post, but Szczesny gets down to push it away.

6' Calhanoglu takes a corner short to Hauge and he drills a low shot across goal from the left of the box. De Ligt is in a good position though and blocks the shot ahead of Szczesny.

4' Leao is wide on the left when he's picked out by Romagnoli and he isn't closed down by the Juventus defenders. He steps away from Danilo to get to the edge of the box and tries to curl an effort to the far bottom corner, but it's just wide.

2' Frabotta does well to get away from Dalot on the left and cuts inside before squaring the ball back to Dybala. He hits the shot first time, but a deflection off Kjaer takes the power off it and it's a comfortable save for Donnarumma.

1' Dybala gets the game underway for Juventus!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Milan have scored in each of their last 17 home games in the top-flight, a record for them since 2010 - the last time they failed to net in a home Serie A match came exactly one year ago today (0-0 v Sampdoria).

Andrea Pirlo makes just two changes to the team that beat Udinese, with Frabotta and Rabiot coming into the starting line-up. McKennie starts on the bench, while Alex Sandro is also unavailable after a positive coronavirus test.

Stefano Pioli makes three changes to his side after their win over Benevento at the weekend as he brings in Hernandez, Castillejo and Hauge. Diaz drops to the bench, Sandro Tonali misses out through suspension and Ante Rebic is unavailable after testing positive for coronavirus.

JUVENTUS SUBS: Cosimo Marco Da Graca, Giorgio Chiellini, Dejan Kulusevski, Arthur, Federico Bernardeschi, Nicolo Fagioli, Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro Di Pardo, Weston McKennie, Radu Dragusin, Merih Demiral, Manolo Portanova.

JUVENTUS STARTING XI (4-4-2): Wojciech Szczesny; Danilo, Leonardo Bonucci, Matthijs de Ligt, Gianluca Frabotta; Federico Chiesa, Adrien Rabiot, Rodrigo Bentancur, Aaron Ramsey; Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala.

MILAN SUBS: Pierre Kalulu Kyatengwa, Brahim Diaz, Andrea Conti, Mateo Musacchio, Leo Duarte, Lorenzo Colombo, Antonio Donnarumma, Cirprian Tatarusanu, Daniel Maldini, Marco Frigerio.

MILAN STARTING XI (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Diogo Dalot, Simon Kjaer, Alessio Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Davide Calabria, Franck Kessie; Samu Castillejo, Hakan Calhanoglu, Jens Hauge; Rafael Leao.

Milan are the only unbeaten team left in the league so far this season, winning 11 and drawing three of their four games so far, and have the chance to go four points clear at the top of the table after Inter's loss earlier today. Juventus are yet to lose away from home in Serie A this campaign but come into this match 10 points behind their opponents.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Serie A meeting between Milan and Juventus at San Siro!

LIVE: Manchester United vs Manchester City

56' Stones has scored his first goal for City in 1162 days, with his previous one coming against Napoli in November 2017 in the Champions League.

55' This is an important period for Solskjaer's side right now with the visitors looking to press on for the second goal, which would effectively finish this game off. Guardiola's men appear content at the minute, however, to manipulate possession from side to side as they remain patient in their search for a second goal.

53' OVER THE BAR! That opener has given City some real impetus, this time Cancelo progresses towards the edge of the area before smashing a right-footed effort just over the bar. Henderson was left motionless after the Portuguese wing-back's effort but fortunately for the hosts it travelled over the target.

52' The away team won both the EFL Cup semi-final legs between United and City last season (3-1 City first leg, 1-0 United second leg), with the Citizens going through 3-2 on aggregate. At this rate, Stones' goal could see the away side claim the bragging rights in Manchester once more.

49' Sterling beats McTominay not once but twice and on the second occasion the Scot fouls City's forward to give away a free-kick in a dangerous area on the left.

47' Shaw sends an outswinging cross into the near post, where Pogba flicks a header towards the back post. Dias does well to make a crucial intervention as he sticks a leg out and hooks it clear, before the likes of Rashford and Martial can pounce behind the Portuguese centre-back.

46' Pogba instantly wins a free-kick on the left-hand side from kick-off after being fouled in the air by Sterling, which provides the hosts an early chance to whip a set-piece in.

46' Both sets of players have made their way back out at Old Trafford and referee Atkinson gets this EFL Cup semi-final back underway!

Both managers will be content with the starts from their respective sides, however, Guardiola did cut a frustrated figure as he marched down the touchline upon Atkinson's half-time whistle. The visitors may look to Aguero or Jesus off the bench if the scores remain level, while Solskjaer could call upon the likes of Greenwood or Mata for some added attacking impetus.

In what was a fairly hectic start, Fernandes forced Steffen into a great save early doors before De Bruyne cannoned a long-range effort into Henderson's left-hand post moments later. Despite the ball being in the back of the net three times in the opening 45 minutes, the sides go in level at 0-0 at half-time, with neither goalkeeper having to make a save, barring Fernandes' early opportunity.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY

45' + 1' There will be one minute of added time as Fernandes fails to capitalise on a counter-attacking opportunity down the left-hand side, when looking for Rashford.

45' Sterling and De Bruyne make identical runs down the right-hand side but Mahrez's passing intentions are clear to see and Fred easily intercepts.

43' Rashford drills a right-footed cross from deep looking for Pogba at the back post. Stones seems to panic slightly as he controls the ball with his shoulder before clearing long. The hosts appeal for handball but Atkinson is having none of it as he waves for play to carry on.

42' De Bruyne has acres of space on the right-hand side as the Belgian is played in behind Shaw. Despite having Foden and Mahrez to choose from in the box, De Bruyne manages to chip a cross into the feet of Wan-Bissaka, who comfortably clears from near the penalty spot.

40' Cancelo does the hard part as he dispossesses Pogba near the left-hand touchline and then, with just Shaw to beat, plays a careless pass out of play with De Bruyne racing around him on the overlap. That was an opening for City but the Portuguese full-back wasted the opportunity.

39' Foden strokes a left-footed pass across the face of goal but Maguire takes up a good position inside the six-yard area, where he intervenes and clears before Mahrez can pounce.

38' Foden spins in circles before sensibly opting to play backwards to Stones. Guardiola's men are then methodical in their play but cannot break down United's compact defensive shape as they pass from side to side looking for an opening.

36' Sterling cuts back inside instead of shooting and throws himself to the floor inside the area. Referee Atkinson shakes his head as he suggests Shaw has just stood his ground and insists play goes on as opposed to awarding a penalty to the visitors.

35' Fernandes' wayward pass gets deflected into the path of Martial, who from 30 yards out fires a left-footed effort into the chest of Stones.

34' Zinchenko aimlessly plays direct and unsurprisingly Mahrez is no match for United's centre-backs in the air. The Red Devils then work it down the other end before McTominay wildly fires over from 25 yards out on his right foot.

32' De Bruyne dances around both Fred and Fernandes before looking long for Sterling over the halfway line but Maguire and Shaw combine to intervene. Shaw then looks for Rashford over the top but, with just the goalkeeper to beat, Rashford's touch lets him down and Steffen gratefully collects the loose ball.

30' Sterling and De Bruyne exchange a one-two but Shaw does well to slide in and win possession back before the City forward can progress. Rashford then breaks down the other end before Martial's deft touch does not fool Cancelo, who intercepts on the edge of the area.

28' Maguire confidently brings the ball out from the back and fires into the feet of Martial, who carelessly gives away possession near the centre circle. Zinchenko then attempts to cross towards De Bruyne but Pogba is there to intercept and clear down the left-hand side.

26' The hosts crowd around Steffen from their corner again and Maguire gets his head to Shaw's left-footed inswinging corner. Despite making good contact, the English centre-back's header travels just wide of the far post, where Martial was inches away from applying the finishing touch.

25' BLOCK! Rashford eases past Zinchenko inside the area and blasts a right-footed effort towards the far post. The United forward's drilled attempt looks destined for the bottom corner until Dias produces an excellent block to deflect it away for a corner to the hosts.

24' For the third time in 24 minutes the ball is in the back of the net. This time, Foden is played in by Zinchenko before the English youngster slides a left-footed finish through the legs of Henderson. However, as with both the occasions before, the assistant rules out the goal for offside.

23' De Bruyne is released down the right-hand side by Fernandinho and with Gundogan in the Belgian's sights at the near post, Lindelof does well to get across and concede the visitors' first corner of the game.

22' United are unbeaten in their last three games against City in all competitions (W2 D1) without conceding a goal. They have not gone four without defeat against their rivals since February 2011.

20' Maguire is happy to hook a clearance long as Foden and Mahrez closed in inside United's area. Fred then fires a pass into the feet of Martial, who needlessly strays into an offside position between Dias and Stones, meaning the assistant has his flag up on the near side.

19' Shaw takes an age to get the ball back in play from a throw-in, as the game settles down after a hectic opening 15 minutes or so. Fernandes then uncharacteristically gives it away, which allows the visitors a chance to break through Foden on the left-hand side.

17' Wan-Bissaka gets caught in possession now and then clumsily fouls Foden. City then unsurprisingly opt to play backwards and retain possession as opposed to launching a cross into the box.

16' Fernandes looks to slide in Rashford over the halfway line but Zinchenko recovers well to slide in and intercept. Dias then takes no chances as he launches a clearance high into the stands at Old Trafford.

15' In what has been a fairly frantic opening 15 minutes, there has perhaps already been more action here than there was in the most recent Premier League match between these two sides. The visitors have dominated possession thus far, but Solskjaer's side look a threat on the counter-attack as always.

13' OFF THE POST! The hosts drop off and invite De Bruyne onto them, the Belgian obliges and steers a right-footed effort towards the top left corner from 20 yards out. Unfortunately for the Citizens, his effort beats Henderson but cannons into the left-hand post and back away from danger.

12' There is a bit of miscommunication between Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka in the area, which nearly allows Gundogan the chance to shoot before the Swedish centre-back steps in. Fernandes is then brought down from behind by Fernandinho, much to the Portuguese midfielder's frustrations, as he felt he had broken away from the City captain.

11' Guardiola’s men have progressed from each of their last five EFL Cup semi-final ties, going on to win the trophy each time. The Citizens are looking to become just the second side to reach four consecutive League Cup finals, after Liverpool who did so between 1981 and 1984.

10' Steffen is called upon from the corner, as United crowd the area for Shaw's set-piece. The American goalkeeper punches the initial delivery, before punching a second clearance moments later to avert the danger.

9' GREAT SAVE! McTominay shapes to shoot but instead feeds Fernandes, who from 20 yards out aims to curl one into the far corner. Steffen does well to move quickly, diving acrobatically to his left and tipping it over the bar to concede the first corner of the game.

7' Cancelo is far too casual in possession and loses out to Pogba., who steers a left-footed cross towards the back post looking for Rashford, but the ball races out of play.

6' Foden smashes a low left-footed cross across the face of goal, where Gundogan taps past Henderson from inside the six-yard area. However, just like moments ago down the other end, the assistant has his flag up for offside to deny Gundogan an opener. Once again, VAR has a quick check and confirms the German was in fact offside.

5' Despite impressing through the middle against Chelsea, it seems Mahrez has been tasked with leading the line in this Manchester derby instead of De Bruyne, who occupies a deeper role in midfield so far.

3' Martial releases Rashford, who unleashes a driven left-footed shot across goal, which Steffen saves. Dias then heads back towards his goalkeeper but the centre-back's header ends up in his own net. Thankfully for Guardiola's side, the assistant has his flag up for offside, before VAR confirms Rashford was indeed initially offside.

2' The visitors, as expected, enjoy some early possession before Fernandinho's pass towards De Bruyne is overhit and races out for a goal-kick.

1' Referee Martin Atkinson blows his whistle to get this EFL Cup semi-final underway!

Both sets of players are wandering out the tunnel at Old Trafford and shortly kick-off will be upon us.

City have lost just two of their 23 EFL Cup matches under Guardiola (W17 D4), though both defeats have come versus the hosts (in 2016 and 2020). Guardiola has lost three of his six matches against Solskjaer (50%), his worst loss percentage against any manager he has faced at least five times.

Guardiola opts for two changes from last time out, with Mahrez and captain Fernandinho replacing Rodri and Silva. Ederson and Scott Carson remain out with Covid-19, so Steffen continues in goal, while 18-year-old goalkeeper Trafford fills in on the bench.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes two changes to his starting eleven that defeated Villa. De Gea is rotated out for cup goalkeeper Henderson and Lindelof comes in for Bailly to partner Maguire at the back.

SUBS: Kyle Walker, Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero, Rodri, Benjamin Mendy, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Felix Nmecha, James Trafford, Luke Mbete.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-2-3-1): Zack Steffen; Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Oleksandr Zinchenko; Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan; Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden; Raheem Sterling.

SUBS: David de Gea, Alex Telles, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Daniel James, Juan Mata, Donny van de Beek, Mason Greenwood, Nemanja Matic.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4–3-1-2): Dean Henderson; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw; Scott McTominay, Fred, Paul Pogba; Bruno Fernandes; Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial.

The two Manchester sides meet in the EFL Cup semi-final for the second year in a row, however, this time it will only be a one-legged affair. To reach the semi-finals, the hosts overcame Everton, while Pep Guardiola’s men coasted past Arsenal. In the league, victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively, have only increased the anticipation of a mouth-watering derby here.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the EFL Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Manchester City.

What has happened to Boca and Santos so far in the 2020 Copa Libertadores?

Boca have made steady if unspectacular progress through the Libertadores, buoyed by six goals from Argentina striker Eduardo Salvio and the ever-inspirational presence of Carlos Tevez.

The Xeneize came out top in Group H without losing a single game and conceding just one goal, and they looked set to continue in the same vein when Tevez's strike gave them a 1-0 victory away to Internacional in the last 16 first leg.

Inter, however, struck back with their own win in the return, and the game was forced into a tense penalty shoot-out which was eventually won 5-4 by the relieved Argentines.

In the quarter-finals against Racing, a tense first leg at El Cilindro went in La Academia's favour thanks to Paraguay international Lorenzo Melgarejo, who headed past Esteban Andrada to gives the hosts a 1-0 victory. In the return, though, Boca fought back and prevailed on aggregate thanks to goals from Salvio and Sebastian Villa.

Santos finished top of Group G with a near-perfect 16 points from 18, although they then faced a potential banana skin in the last 16 in the shape of Ecuador Liga de Quito.

The Brazilians pulled off a major coup in prevailing 2-1 in the altitude of Quito, a result that meant they could afford to lose a bad-tempered return and still progress on away goals.

The Peixe were then unlucky to see Gremio level at 1-1 deep into injury time of the all-Brazilian quarter final, first leg, but they proved too strong in the return as a superlative performance from young sensation Kaio Jorge led them to a 4-1 thrashing at Vila Belmiro and easy passage into the last four.

Boca and Santos team news and preview

The Xeneize welcome back midfielder Diego Gonzalez from a muscular injury, and the ex-Racing and Lanus man is likely to start following two weeks' absence from the first XI.

Gonzalez's return means Boca will make just one change from the side that beat Racing in the quarter final second leg, with Nicolas Capaldo entering for the injured Jordan Campuzano.

Venezuela international Yeferson Soteldo missed the quarter-final clashes due to a positive Covid-19 test, but has now been cleared to return and will line up in attack at the Bombonera.

Santos will also field Lucas Verissimo, who has been sold to Benfica but will remain with the Brazilians until the end of their Libertadores campaign.

Probable Boca XI:  Andrada; Jara, Izquierdoz, Lisandro Lopez, Fabra; Salvio, Gonzalez, Capaldo, Villa; Soldano, Tevez.

Probable Santos XI: John; Para, Lucas Veríssimo, Luan Peres, Felipe Jonatan; Alison, Sandry, Diego Pituca; Marinho, Kaio Jorge, Soteldo.

When does the 2020 Copa Libertadores finish?

The 2020 Copa Libertadores was originally scheduled to conclude with a single final in a neutral ground, the system which replaced the old format of home and away legs last year, at the end of November.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the tournament suffered almost six months of interruption, meaning that the final phases had to be pushed back into the South American summer months of late December and January.

The last quarter-final tie between Boca and Racing concluded on December 23. The first leg of the Xeneize's semi clash with Santos takes place just under 24 hours after River and Palmeiras locked horns for the first time on Tuesday, while both return matches take place next week.

The final proper is scheduled to be held at Rio de Janeiro's landmark Maracana Stadium on January 30.

Cornella 1-0 Atletico Madrid: LaLiga leaders suffer Copa del Rey upset

A toothless Atletico Madrid side were dumped out of the Copa del Rey in the second round, with minnows Cornella claiming a 1-0 win.

Atletico Madrid were the victims of a Copa del Rey giant-killing for a second successive season as Diego Simeone's side went down 1-0 to Cornella.

LaLiga leaders Atleti lost 2-1 to Cultural Leonesa in the round of 32 last season, and slumped out to Segunda B opposition on Wednesday.

The 10-time Copa winners fell behind to Adrian Jimenez's sensational flick seven minutes into the second-round tie in Catalonia.

Saul Niguez hit the woodwork and Lucas Torreira went close with a free-kick, but Ricard Sanchez's second booking compounded Atleti's issues as minnows Cornella claimed a famous triumph.

Sanchez was fortunate not to concede a penalty for handball in the opening minutes, before Jose Gimenez, making his 200th Atleti appearance, scythed down Raul Prieto.

With Gimenez, who was booked for his troubles, off the pitch receiving treatment, Cornella added insult to injury, with Agus Medina's cross flicked home expertly by Jimenez.

Atleti seemed set to restore parity shortly after the 20-minute mark, yet Angel Correa saw two efforts blocked either side of Saul hitting the crossbar.

Though Atleti were seeing over 60 per cent possession, they would have been 2-0 down heading into the break if not for Miguel San Roman's save from Pablo Fernandez.

Vitolo got in behind Cornella's backline early in the second half, only for an errant offside flag to deny him a chance to equalise.

Torreira's curling free-kick was inches away from levelling proceedings, though Atleti were then fortunate that Eloy Gila flicked over from close range at the other end.

Sanchez's frustrating night was made worse when he was deemed to have kicked out at Cornella goalkeeper Ramon Juan – the full-back seeing red just 11 minutes after receiving his first booking as Atleti's comeback efforts proved futile.

SuperSport United 2-2 Chippa United: Red-hot Grobler edges closer to Matsatsantsa record

SuperSport United 2-2 Chippa United: Red-hot Grobler edges closer to Matsatsantsa record

Malesela started his fourth stint at the Eastern Cape-based side with a draw as his charges showed character to hold the Tshwane giants

SuperSport United failed to maintain their winning run in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as they drew 2-2 with Chippa United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Andile Mbenyane and Maloisane Mokhele netted for the Chilli Boys, while Matsatsantsa scored through Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bradley Grobler, who made it six goals from four league matches.

Matsatsantsa were targeting their fourth successive victory in the league having ended 2020 with a 3-1 win over Baroka FC in an action-packed encounter which was played in Polokwane.

Grobler, Gabuza and Ghampani Lungu were deployed as the front three by coach Kaitano Tembo, while Luke Fleurs, who netted an own against Baroka, kept his place in the team.

Meanwhile, the Chilli Boys were desperate to end their five-match winless run in the league which saw the club dismiss coach Lehlohonolo Seema, who has since been replaced by Dan Malesela.

Malesela, who is back at Chippa for his fourth stint‚ handed club's stalwart Mbenyane his second appearance of the season, while Isaac Nhlapo marshalled the visitors' defence.

SuperSport applied some pressure on the Chippa defence from the first whistle and they came close to breaking the deadlock through Lungu.

The Zambia international's superb acrobatic attempt at goal was fantastically denied by Ayanda Mtshali as the Chippa goalkeeper pulled off a reflex save and the visitors cleared their lines.

Mtshali was the busier of the two keepers as he parried away an effort from his teammate Nhlapo, who nearly netted an own-goal, before coming off his goal-line to deny Kudakwashe Mahachi.

However, Chippa grew in confidence as the match progressed and they broke the deadlock seven minutes before half-time following a brilliant team move which was started and finished off by Mbenyane.

The 32-year-old forward pounced and scored from close range to make it 1-0 to Chippa after SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams had failed to parry Mokhele's low shot away from danger.

Chippa were then able to contain SuperSport and the score was 1-0 to the visitors at the interval.

Grobler, who was just three goals away from becoming SuperSport's all-time leading goalscorer, looked lively after the restart as the home side pushed for the equalizing goal.

The Bafana Bafana international's goal-bound effort was deflected wide, before he netted with a looping header from Sipho Mbule's cross - making it 1-1 in the 49th minute.

It was his 56th goal for the Tshwane giants and he also became the league's top scorer this season with eight goals from eight matches.

Malesela then made a triple substitution as he produced the attacking trio of Thabiso Lebitso, Bienvenu Eva Nga and Kurt Lentjies as visitors looked to restore their lead.

However, it was the Tembo's substitute Jamie Webber, who made an immediate impact as he grabbed an assist in the 87th minute when his corner-kick was headed home by Gabuza to make it 2-1 to SuperSport.

The goal did not deter the Chilli Boys as they railed and they snatched a late equalizing goal through Mokhele's well-taken shot to make it 2-2 with three minutes left on the clock.

Mokhele's goal ensured that the match ended in a 1-1 draw as SuperSport and Chippa shared the spoils on the day.

The draw saw SuperSport remain third on the league standings - five points behind joint leaders Swallows FC and Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chippa also remained 14th on the log.

SuperSport are set to travel to Mpumalanga where they will face TS Galaxy in a league clash on Saturday, while Chippa are scheduled to face Lamontville Golden Arrows in Durban on the same day.

Simba SC 4-0 FC Platinum (4-1 agg): Wekundu wa Msimbazi through to Caf Champions League group stage

The Mainland league champions have made it to the group stage of the continental competition after a resounding win in the return leg

Simba SC cruised into the group stage of the Caf Champions League after a 4-0 win against FC Platinum in the return leg played at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday.

The Platinum Miners came into the fixture with a slim 1-0 advantage secured from the first leg meeting played at National Sports Stadium in Harare on December 23.

Erasto Nyoni put Simba ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute before Shomari Kapombe added the second in the 61st minute, John Bocco grabbed the third in added time and Clatous Chama made it 4-0 with seconds left to the final whistle.

Simba coach Sven Vandenbroeck made two changes to the side that played the first leg, with striker Chris Mugalu coming in for Meddie Kagere, who dropped to the bench while Rally Bwalya came in for Hassan Dilunga.

Despite recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the first leg, striker Bocco was benched with keeper Aishi Manula starting, just as Kenyan defender Joash Onyango and midfielder of the year Chama, who was given the captain's armband in place of Bocco.

The Wekundu wa Msimbazi showed their intent of going for an early lead as striker Mugalu missed a sitter in the eighth minute after his feeble shot from a Chama cross went inches wide.

Simba continued to press their visitors and it was defender Pascal Wawa who should have given them the lead in the 12th minute, when, after a well-taken corner kick from Luis Miquissone, the Ivorian rose the highest but directed his header off the target.

Simba finally took the lead leading up to half-time when Nyoni scored from the penalty spot after Miquissone was brought down inside the box and they went into the break enjoying a 1-0 lead on the day, with the tie on level terms.

On resumption, Simba, who were cheered on by a mammoth crowd then scored the second on the hour mark, this time Kapombe finishing off a cross from Chama.

It was Kapombe who set up the third goal for Bocco, who had just come on as a late substitute, to beat the Platinum keeper with a low shot.

With the referee checking his watch, Simba were not done yet as Chama drilled home the fourth goal after a defensive lapse inside the Platinum defence to ensure they booked their place in the group stage of the competition for the third time in history.

A few hours before the game, Platinum suffered a huge blow when five of their key players were withdrawn from the squad after testing positive for Covid-19.

A source within the team confirmed to Goal the five players were already set to start in the fixture until they received their results two hours before kick-off.

“It is unfortunate some of the players who tested positive were already in coach Norman Mapeza’s plans for the match,” the source, who did not want to be named, told Goal.

“We have to use the players we have anyway.”

Simba will now shift their focus to the Mapinduzi Cup which is currently taking place in Zanzibar.

Caf Champions League: Coronavirus strikes Asante Kotoko in Omdurman as Al-Hilal clash is cancelled

The first round, second-leg fixture has been called off over the Ghanaians' inability to raise a team

Asante Kotoko's Caf Champions League first round, second-leg away fixture against Sudanese side Al-Hilal, which was scheduled for Wednesday, has been cancelled over a Covid-19-related issue.

With a group stage ticket to fight for, the two teams were set for a showdown in Omdurman, the first leg in Ghana having ended in a 1-0 win for visiting Hilal.

The game was, however, called off after kick-off was delayed for over 30 minutes, owing to Kotoko's inability to raise enough men for the match after seven players of the Porcupine Warriors tested positive for Covid-19.

"Al Hilal vs Asante Kotoko Game called off as we await CAF decision," Kotoko have announced on Twitter.

"Asante Kotoko has officially petitioned Caf on the overwhelming anomalies Association with our covid 19 results."

With all Kotoko players testing negative for coronavirus before the team's departure from Ghana, Kotoko are accusing Hilal of foul play.

"Four officials and seven players are alleged to have tested positive for Covid after the results of the tests came in," Kotoko posted in an earlier update on Twitter.

"The Covid results were delivered by known officials of Al Hilal but suspiciously enough, the positive results clearly look different from the negative results.

"The team [Kotoko] has made an official complaint to the match commissioner as the Covid results have been tampered with.

"The team is, however, at the stadium to present a team.

"Game on temporary hold as we await the delivery of 'the missing Covid result' of one Asante Kotoko player.

"Kindly note that without the result of the outstanding player, Asante Kotoko cannot raise a team of the required players needed to play the [Caf Champions League]."

It is the second time Kotoko are involved in a Covid-19-related match cancellation.

In the preliminary round of the competition, the Porcupine Warriors saw their second leg home fixture against Nouadhibou of Mauritania cancelled after some players of the visiting team tested positive for coronavirus.

While Nouadhibou were unable to raise a team for the game, Kotoko was awarded a 2-0 win by Caf and handed qualification to the current round.

Rapinoe and Lloyd return for USWNT as Andonovski names roster for January camp

The two veterans joined Mallory Pugh as World Cup winners who are back with the national team for the first time since March

Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd have been named in the 27-player U.S. women's national team training camp roster for January.

Both players have been away from the USWNT since March of last year, missing both the October training camp and November's friendly against the Netherlands

USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski will trim down his roster to 18-player gameday squads for two friendlies against Colombia at the conclusion of January camp, which will be held in Orlando.

Alex Morgan was not included on the roster after the forward announced on Tuesday that she and her family had tested positive for Covid-19 over the holidays.

Also missing out was Manchester United duo Christen Press and Tobin Heath. Press is currently recovering from a non-Covid illness while Heath has opted to remain in Manchester to compete in her team's Women’s Super League fixtures.

“A big credit goes to our players, team staff and overall medical staff for the tremendous work to make sure we have secure and healthy environments for our camps and games,” Andonovski said in a federation release.

“And a special thanks also goes to our game operations staff for enabling us to host two matches against a talented opponent. It’s extremely valuable to play a team we don’t see that often and it’s important for our Olympic preparation.”

Barcelona would be less valuable without Messi, says presidential candidate Fernandez

The Argentine seems set to leave Camp Nou at the end of 2020-21, with his future a hot topic for all of the club's presidential hopefuls

Lionel Messi is the only player who can ensure Barcelona's value, according to presidential candidate Lluis Fernandez.

Messi wanted to leave Barca last year, due to frustration with the club's board and then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner ultimately elected to stay and see out his contract, which runs out at the end of the season, before Bartomeu and the entire Barca board resigned in October.

There has been talk that Messi may choose to remain at the club he has been at since 2001, having helped them to 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues.

However, Messi, who marked his 500th LaLiga appearance by teeing up Frenkie de Jong's winner against Huesca last time out, will not make a decision until towards the end of the season – something Barca coach Ronald Koeman insists is not a problem.

With the presidential elections coming up on January 24, each candidate is outlining their vision for the future of the club, and Fernandez has vowed to do all he can to keep Messi at Camp Nou, outlining the financial benefits of retaining the 33-year-old.

"We can't forget that Barcelona have a greater income because of Messi," he told Radio Marca . "Barcelona would have less value without Messi.

"He is the only player in the squad who, by his mere presence, ensures Barcelona have more value and more income.

"We need income, but we also need to manage the club's structure. There's a need to negotiate the debt.

"But, there's no danger of Barcelona being forced to become a limited company. The members can rest assured about that."

Fernandez also wants the club to return to its roots and promote more players from its famed La Masia academy.

Ansu Fati is the most recent prodigy off Barca's production line and, should he win the election, Fernandez will speak to Koeman about the importance of giving youth a chance.

"We agree that Ronald Koeman should be given a chance," Fernandez added. "We need to speak with him because there's a need to give opportunities to the players from the academy.

"No starter has come out of La Masia since 2011, when Sergi Roberto did so. So, there's a need to speak to Koeman about this and about giving opportunities.

"From next year, we need to promote young players, as we won't be able to sign as much and we'll need to reduce the wage bill."

Sampdoria 2-1 Inter: Wasteful Nerazzurri's winning run ended by old boys Candreva and Keita

Sampdoria 2-1 Inter: Wasteful Nerazzurri's winning run ended by old boys Candreva and Keita

Inter missed a glut of chances at the Luigi Ferraris as Sampdoria ended the Nerazzurri's eight-match winning Serie A streak.

Antonio Candreva and Keita Balde were on target against their former club as Inter's eight-match winning run in Serie A ground to a halt in a 2-1 defeat at Sampdoria.

The Nerazzurri were aiming to go top, at least temporarily, and Alexis Sanchez saw an early penalty saved at the Luigi Ferraris.

Another VAR check led to Candreva opening the scoring from the spot and Keita – on loan at Sampdoria from Monaco – doubled the hosts' lead in an enthralling first half.

Stefan de Vrij finally headed wasteful Inter onto the scoreboard after 65 minutes, but Antonio Conte's side failed to find and a leveller and remain second, one point adrift of Milan.

In a breathless opening, Emil Audero foiled Ashley Young's whipped shot and Milan Skriniar skewed wide from the same corner that saw Morten Thorsby pinged for handball after VAR's intervention.

Audero kept out Sanchez's penalty and Young smashed the rebound against the post, while Lorenzo Tonelli's looping header for Sampdoria hit the crossbar soon after.

Candreva succeeded where Sanchez failed after 23 minutes, firing into the left of the goal after VAR spotted Nicolo Barella had handled a Tonelli header.

Things worsened for Inter when Keita swept home Mikkel Damsgaard's low right-wing centre seven minutes before the break.

Sanchez was denied by Audero again and Lautaro Martinez wastefully headed wide, before the former followed suit in similar style after the break.

Inter finally responded when De Vrij headed home Marcelo Brozovic's corner with 25 minutes left and substitute Romelu Lukaku saw a powerful downward header brilliantly stopped by Audero.

Ivan Perisic was twice off target with headers either side of Martinez testing Audero at his near post but Inter were frustrated in their endeavours.

What does it mean? Conte's men pass up great opportunity

With unbeaten league leaders Milan scheduled to face Juve later on Wednesday, Inter had the chance to leapfrog their neighbours - at least temporarily.

But Conte's side were wasteful when chasing a ninth straight league win, with only seven of their 25 shots finding the target. On another day this could have been a cake walk for the visitors, but the reality is their 11-match unbeaten run comes to an end.

Ghosts of Inter's past haunt Nerazzurri

It is a little late to be making gags about the ghosts of Christmas past but a couple of Inter old boys haunted their former employees here.

As well as his penalty, Candreva had four key passes and completed 21 of 27 passes (77.8 per cent). Keita stretched Inter's defence and completed each of his 10 passes.

Martinez and Sanchez misfire

Martinez was the catalyst for the 6-2 battering of Crotone on Sunday, scoring a hat-trick on that occasion. But here, in a game where Lukaku (thigh) was only fit enough to play the final half an hour, the Argentine striker was uncharacteristically wasteful.

Only one of his seven efforts were on target while his passing accuracy was just 44 per cent in an underwhelming showing.

Sanchez had two shots on target – albeit one was his missed penalty – but he too was guilty of misfiring, especially with a poor header early in the second half.

Key Opta facts

- Sampdoria have won a game against Inter in Serie A for the first time since April 2017 - six defeats in a row conceding an average of 2.7 goals per game since then.
- Inter have lost an away game in Serie A for the first time since the defeat against Juventus in March 2020, in their last match before the lockdown.
- Sampdoria have scored in 16 consecutive home games in Serie A for the first time since October 1994 (16).
- Keita has found the net for consecutive games in Serie A for the first time since December 2018, doing so with Inter.

What's next?

Inter face a tricky trip to Roma on Sunday, a day before Sampdoria visit lowly Spezia.

KCCA FC 3-1 AS Kigali: Aheebwa’s hat-trick not enough for spirited Kassasiro Boys

A 2-0 walkover from the first leg was enough to propel the Rwandan side into the next phase of the tournament

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA FC) have bowed out of the Caf Confederation Cup despite a spirited 3-1 win over AS Kigali at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Wednesday.

A 2-0 walkover from the first leg ensured AS Kigali proceeded to the next round at the expense of KCCA, who were the strongest side in the second leg contest.

Brian Aheebwa was the man of the match after he notched a hat-trick as he continues to establish himself as Uganda’s upcoming striker. Muhadjiri Hakizimana's goal is all the visitors wanted to advance on away goals, even though they were clearly outrun in the second leg.

Aheebwa, who has scored seven Uganda Premier League (UPL) goals, opened the scoring early as neither team had settled into the game. The December UPL player of the month found the back of the net in the first minute and gave KCCA the needed spirit against the Rwandan side.

Joseph Bukenya, who was given his debut by coach Mike Mutebi, showed brilliance along with the right-wing and his deliveries caused trouble to the visitors who struggled to clear.

He, in one clear instance, outwitted his marker in the 26th minute but his cross for a well-positioned Aheebwa was quickly cleared by Bendata Janvier.

Aheebwa, who proved to be a thorn in AS Kigali’s flesh all through, doubled the Kasasiro Boys’ lead in the 36th minute. The goal brought the score level since the Rwandan outfit were awarded a 2-0 win in the first leg.

Hakizimana reduced the deficit as he pulled one back for the visitors from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.

Aheebwa, who toyed with AS Kigali’s backline on a number of occasions, added the third goal for the former Ugandan champions in the 75th minute, to level matters on aggregate, but still trailing in the tie due to Hakizimana's away goal.

In the final 15 minutes, the hosts were unable to get the winner they needed, and the Rwandan side advanced to the next round.

The Kampala side booked the AS Kigali date after Caf had given them a bye from the preliminary round. The game was their first in more than a year as they last played against AC Paradou in November 2019 in Algeria.

Mutebi’s side came into the game buoyed by a good record in the continental games since 2005. They have engaged in 24 games since then at home in both the Confederation Cup and in the Champions League and have won 15 games, lost four and six ended up producing draws.

KCCA FC XI: Charles Lukwago, Herbert Achai, Denis Iguma, Joseph Bukenya, Ashraf Mugume, Joseph Kafumbe, Keziron Kizito, Bright Anukani, Samuel Ssenyonjo, Brian Aheebwa.

AS Kigali XI: Bate Shamiru, Christian Ishimwe, Hassan Karera, Janvier Benedata, Hassan Rugirayabo, Rachid Kalisa, Tumaine Ntamuhanga, Eric Nsabimana Muhadjili Hakizimana, Shaban Hussein, Aboubakar Lawal.

FIFA The Best: Messi, Salah, Putellas nominated

The 24-year-old is reportedly looking to force his exit from the Bosuilstadion after two-and-a-half years

Cameroon forward Didier Lamkel Ze has tendered an apology to Royal Antwerp after he turned up to Tuesday’s training session in their rivals Anderlecht's shirt.

Lamkel Ze is reportedly trying to force a January move to Greek Super League club Panathinaikos after playing just five matches in the Belgian First Division A this season.

The 24-year-old was denied access to the Royal Antwerp training centre after wearing an Anderlecht shirt with Yannick Bolasie written on the back.

His encounter with the security operatives appeared to be a scuffle as he resisted their efforts at the door and tried to force his way in.

Royal Antwerp and Anderlecht are league rivals with the former placed fifth on the Belgian top-flight table, a point behind Vincent Kompany’s side, who are fourth.

After the incident, the Cameroon-born star felt sorry for his actions and he still hopes to be available for new manager Franky Vercauteren, who was appointed as Ivan Leko’s successor on Tuesday.

“I want to apologise to the club and to the Antwerp supporters, because they are magnificent and wonderful supporters, they have always supported me,” Lamekl Ze said in a social media video.

“If I reacted like this it is because my head was somewhere else (the transfer...), it was not easy for me.

“I really, really want to apologise for this gesture. I do not forget neither my team-mates in the locker room or the technical staff who have supported me since my arrival here.

“I am available for the club if the new coach needs me. I hope to find the supporters very soon on the pitch.”

Lamkel Ze moved to Belgium from French outfit Chamois Niortais in July 2018 and he scored 10 goals so far in 57 First Division A appearances.

He also helped Royal Antwerp win the 2019-20 Belgian Cup.

LA Galaxy sign Raheem Edwards to three-year contract

The federation boss says they did not receive any letter from the African sanctioning the live coverage by K’Ogalo

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has insisted no letter from Caf sanctioning Gor Mahia to stream live their Caf Champions League match against CR Belouizdad on Wednesday was received.

According to Gor Mahia, Caf gave them the green light to stream the return leg clash played at Nyayo Stadium, but the FKF maintained they had not been cleared to do so and thus the game was not screened live.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa has told Goal they did not receive any letter from Caf indicating they had allowed Gor Mayia to screen the match on their social media platforms, and further wondered why the African body would be dealing directly with clubs and not the federation.

“We don’t have any letter from Caf stating Gor Mahia should stream live the match,” Mwendwa told Goal.

"In fact, Gor Mahia should give us a copy of the letter, I don’t understand since when did Caf start dealing with clubs directly without involving the federation?”

Mwendwa further maintained they had acted within the law to deny Gor Mahia access to stream the game which later ended 2-1 in favour of the North African giants.

“When did Caf start talking to Gor Mahia directly?" he asked.

"We have not received any letter from Caf, and if Caf wants them to stream the game live, they will write to us but if they communicated to them directly, then we are not aware.”

Gor Mahia were forced to write directly to Caf through chairman Ambrose Rachier after the FKF denied them access, with their letter to the African body and obtained by Goal stating: “We write to request the authority to live stream the said match strictly online and not on national TV station.

“We had presented the request through the match commissioner at the pre-match technical meeting held in Nairobi on Tuesday and we are yet to officially obtain the direct go ahead, our technical team is already at the match venue waiting for the authority to proceed to layout the equipment ahead of the 3 pm kick-off time.

“We are looking forward to your favourable consideration so that our fans, who are barred from attendance due to the Covid-19 conditions can have a chance to view the match.”

Caf then responded through commercial director Ali Aissaoui, who stated: “Kindly note the rights for the said game are not centralised and belongs to the club hosting the game.

“Therefore, we do not have any objection to your request, and should such a game be indeed broadcasted, would you be kind enough to communicate the live streaming link?”

In their letter to Gor Mahia denying them access to the live coverage signed by CEO Barry Otieno, the FKF said: “Reference is made to your letter dated January 5, 2021, informing the federation of Gor Mahia’s intention to live stream the Caf Champions League match no. 76 Gor Mahia vs CR Belouizdad, scheduled for January 6, 2021.

“In this regard, and further to Caf guidelines on the broadcast of Caf competitions, the federation has regrettably been unable to obtain a clearance from Caf for the match to be broadcasted, as the request by Gor Mahia was made outside of the provided Caf timelines.

“In light of the aforementioned, please be advised that live streaming of the said match will not be possible, unless with prior written consent from Caf.”

The game was, however, not streamed live as K’Ogalo went on to lose 2-1 and exit the Champions League on an 8-1 aggregate scoreline.

Hayley Ladd: Manchester United's all-action midfield star

The 22-year-old striker has attracted plenty of attention since joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2017 and is aiming to emulate Premier League stars

Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka has backed himself for big things in the future, saying he could go on to emulate fellow African stars Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The 22-year-old has been tipped to join the trio in the Premier League, having been linked with moves to Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal during the last transfer window.

Daka has started the current season in red-hot form, scoring 15 goals in 17 matches in all competitions for the Austrian side.

The Zambian has looked to the Premier League for inspiration, believing he could follow in the footsteps of some of Africa's best.

"To see our big brothers like Aubameyang, Salah, Mane, it's something that gives me the dream that I can also make it," Daka told BBC Sport. "I can be like them. They are my inspiration, knowing that they also come from Africa.

"I think when people are making those kinds of comparisons, it's great, looking at the status of Sadio Mane, the kind of football he plays and the kind of person that he is."

Daka's national team coach Milutin Sredejovic agreed with his star forward's assessment that big things lie ahead.

"I would say he's on the road to replace what Samuel Eto'o once was in representing Africa and African football," Sredejovic said. "He could be compared to Sadio Mane or Samuel Eto'o, with the level of skill and speed that he has. With the sense for space, sense of positioning, in the right place at the right time."

Salzburg has become a jumping-off point for top talent in recent years, with Erling Haaland, Dominik Szoboszlai and Mane himself among those who have moved to a bigger club from the Austrian side. Daka is careful not to speculate too much about his future, but he believes that his next club must view him as a long-term investment.

Speaking about a potential next club, Daka said: "The most vital thing that I've noticed is that the club [doesn't] focus much about receiving big money for players. They're more concerned about the development of the player."
