Football must 'reboot' and accept change amid Super League talk, says Real Madrid supremo Perez

The Bernabeu boss claims fans are suffering from the game being played to saturation levels and wants to see fewer, more high-quality matches

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez believes that football must embrace the prospect of a European Super League.

With many of the continent’s leading divisions dominated by one or a handful teams, there are serious concerns about the long-term viability of domestic football, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic which has ravaged finances for many sides.

Perez says that a Super League, in which all of the game’s biggest sides would compete, is the natural solution and one that should be given serious consideration.

“Nothing will be like it was before. The pandemic obliges us to make football more competitive. We must innovate and look for formulas to ensure football remains attractive,” he told Real Madrid’s general assembly.

“Real Madrid played a part in the foundation of FIFA and the European Cup and the current model needs a reboot, as the impact of Covid-19 has demonstrated. Football needs new momentum and Real Madrid will be right there at the heart of it.”

Perez wants to see fewer matches on the calendar, which should allow a higher quality of football on display.

“Everyone is advocating reform in world football. There is over saturation and fans, who are the most important ones, are suffering,” Perez said. “There's also consequences for footballers with injuries. Football's reform cannot wait. The biggest clubs in Europe have millions of fans and they cannot turn their back on them.”

Madrid are the most successful side ever on the European stage, having won the continental cup on a record 13 occasions, including three times under Zidane from 2016 to 2018.

However, they presently find themselves third in La Liga, three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, albeit having played one game more.

On Sunday, Zinedine Zidane’s side will face Eibar as they attempt to close the gap.

After a slow start to the season, Madrid have won their last three matches, including a derby success over Atletico. Meanwhile, they made progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, doing so on the final matchday with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. They will face Serie A side Atalanta in the round of 16.

'Willian has done absolutely nothing for Arsenal!' - Hartson singles out 'poor' Gunners midfielder

A man who enjoyed cult hero status during his time with the north London outfit thinks the Brazilian has fallen well short of expectations

John Hartson has singled out Willian for criticism, claiming the midfielder "has done nothing" for Arsenal since joining the club in August.

Arsenal snapped Willian up on a free transfer at the end of the 2019-20 campaign, which proved to be the Brazilian's last at Chelsea.

The 32-year-old was initially seen as a major coup for the Gunners given his impressive record at Stamford Bridge, where he scored 63 goals in 339 games while getting his hands on two Premier League titles, one Europa League crown and the FA Cup.

Unfortunately, the former Blues star has been unable to live up to the same high standards during his first few months at Emirates Stadium, drawing blanks in his opening 16 appearances for Mikel Arteta's side while only contributing three assists.

Willian's performances have been called into question amid Arsenal's slide towards the relegation zone, which continued with a 2-1 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Gunners are now only four points above 18th placed Burnley having played two games more, with their pre-season target of a top-four finish now seemingly well out of reach.

Hartson thinks several members of Arteta's squad have been guilty of resting on their laurels in recent months, including Willian, who he has slammed for failing to hit the ground running at the start of his career in north London.

“Arsenal got him on a free from Chelsea. It was reported that there were several clubs in the hunt for Willian," the former Arsenal striker told talkSPORT. “He decided to come across London and again he has just not done it.

“These players are living off their past, you know. Willian was outstanding at Chelsea at times, winning trophies, but he’s done absolutely nothing at Arsenal. He’s been poor.”

Willian will likely return to Arteta's starting XI when the Gunners play host to Manchester City in a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash on Tuesday, before focus switches back to the Premier League. Arsenal are set to welcome title-chasing Chelsea to Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day, where they will be aiming to halt a seven-match winless run in the top-flight.

LIVE: Tottenham vs Leicester

23' The pace of the game has dropped slightly in the last few minutes, with Tottenham not showing much urgency to get after Leicester, letting them keep the ball in midfield.

21' Kane has scored 14 goals in just 10 Premier League appearances against Leicester, more than he’s netted versus any other opponent in the competition. Only Sergio Aguero (15 vs Newcastle for Man City) has scored more goals for a single club against a specific opponent in the competition’s history.

19' Good move! Tielemans lays the ball off to Maddison, who quickly turns and passes to Barnes, but his effort is blocked. The pressure continues, but Spurs clear.

17' Decent effort! Maddison tries to curl the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net. However, he gets too much on it and it flies over the Tottenham goal.

15' ALMOST! Kane breaks through on goal, he tries to work space for a shot at goal himself, but Leicester get players back and block off his route. The ball ends up coming to Son on the left and instead of shooting, he tries to cross to Ndombele at the far post, but the midfielder wasn't on his wavelength and the chance goes away.

14' CHANCE! Another Leicester free-kick, with Spurs fail to deal with, as Barnes meets it at the far post, he heads it back into the six-yard box, it bounces around dangerously, before falling to Vardy, who swings at it. However, his effort is blocked and Lloris then manages to gather.

12' Tottenham have everyone penned back inside their own half defending at the moment, including Son. Tielemans plays a quick lofted ball over the top of the Spurs defence, for Maddison to run onto, but Dier manages to clear.

10' Leicester have won just one of their last nine Premier League away games against Spurs (D2 L6), winning 1-0 at White Hart Lane in their 2015-16 title-winning season.

8' Leicester with the early possession in midfield, with Spurs dropping deep and soaking up the pressure early on, but no chances for either side just yet.

6' Free-kick to the visitors now, as Hojbjerg dives into the back of Maddison and gives away the needless set piece. First chance of the game for the Foxes to create something. However, the header by Fofana flies well over the bar.

4' Free-kick to Spurs in a good position after Castagne dives in and fouls Kane, giving the hosts a good opportunity to get the ball into the box. However, the delivery from Son is poor and Leicester clear the danger.

2' Early problem here for Tottenham, as Ndombele seems to be struggling a little bit after a challenge with Ndidi and Tielemans. However, the midfielder doesn't require any treatment and it looks like he will be fine to continue.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick off is almost upon us, stay tuned for all the match action!

Meanwhile Brendan Rodgers have made three changes to his side, with Evans, Castagne and Albrighton all coming into the team, replacing Fuchs, Mendy and Under who have dropped to the bench.

Jose Mourinho has made just two changes to his starting line-up, with Davies and Bergwijn dropping to the bench and they have been replaced by Reguilon and Ndombele.

LEICESTER SUBS: Nampalys Mendy, Kelechi Iheanacho, Luke Thomas, Christian Fuchs, Ayoze Perez, Cengiz Under, Dennis Praet, Danny Ward, Daniel Amartey.

LEICESTER (4-4-2): Kasper Schmeichel; James Justin, Wesley Fofana, Jonny Evans, Timothy Castagne; Wilfred Ndidi, Marc Albrighton, Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Jamie Vardy.

TOTTENHAM SUBS: Gareth Bale, Harry Winks, Carlos Vinicius, Steven Bergwijn, Joe Rodon, Matt Doherty, Ben Davies, Joe Hart, Lucas Moura.

TOTTENHAM (4-4-2): Hugo Lloris; Serge Aurier, Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Sergio Reguilon; Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane.

Tottenham suffered a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool last time out, which saw Spurs drop down the table, ending an 11-game unbeaten streak in the league. Leicester also suffered a loss in their last game, as they were beaten 2-0 by Everton.

Both teams can move up to second in the Premier League table with a victory today as Spurs are third and Leicester fourth, so they would leapfrog Everton who currently occupy that position.

Caf Champions League: Broke Gor Mahia risk Caf sanctions as Algeria trip hangs in balance

K'Ogalo had previously sealed progression after defeating APR Rwanda 4-3 on aggregate

Gor Mahia players have threatened to boycott their Caf Champions League game away to Chabab Riadhi de Belouizdad if they are not paid their dues.

K'Ogalo players have been on a go-slow and Goal understands they held a meeting with some officials on Saturday and made it clear they will not travel to Algeria for the game if they are not paid.

"We have not been paid our November monies as well as this [December] month," a senior player in the team told Goal on Sunday.

"Yes, we had a meeting on Saturday and our stand was made clear. The office should pay us our allowances and salaries before we talk about the Algeria trip."

"As it stands, nobody has communicated to us regarding the logistics of the game. We are in the dark over everything, but again, they cannot tell us because our stand has been made clear."

Rumours emanating from the club indicate it is struggling to get the means of transport to Algeria. However, Goal understands the team is struggling to get the money to facilitate the trip.

When reached for comment over the Gor Mahia saga, FKF CEO Barry Otieno revealed the club had already been given the flight route to use and it will be surprising if they don't make it to Algeria.

"Gor Mahia have been given all the alternative routes to Algeria and if they don't travel then it will not be because of airspace issues but maybe their own problems which we don't know and have not been told."

The Kenyan champions qualified for the next phase of the competition after they managed to secure a 4-3 aggregate win against APR of Rwanda in a two-legged affair.

The Rwandan champions came into the return leg with a 2-1 advantage from their first leg meeting in Kigali, but could not sustain the pressure as Gor Mahia scored two quick goals in added time to win 3-1 and advance.

On the other hand, CR Belouizdad of Algeria reached the next round after a 4-0 aggregate win against Al Nasr of Libya. The Algerian champions won the first leg away in Tripoli 2-0 and returned home to complete the job with another 2-0 win to set a date with K'Ogalo.

According to the Confederation of African Football (Caf), the first leg will be played on December 22 or 23 in Algeria, with the return leg planned for January 5 or 6, 2021 in Nairobi.

Lwandamina: Azam FC must reinforce squad to challenge for title

The Zambian gaffer now says he will have to beef up the squad for the team to have a competitive edge in the second round

Azam FC tactician George Lwandamina has openly claimed he will have to sign a few players in the mini-transfer window if the team is to remain among the title contenders.

The Chamazi-based giants started the season on a flying start managing to win seven straight matches from the opening fixture and were leading the log for most of the early stages before they lost to Mwadui FC.

After the defeat, they moved to fire Romanian coach Aristica Cioaba and went for the services of the much-travelled Lwandamina, who has so far overseen two matches, both ending in 2-2 draws against Namungo FC and Ruvu Shooting.

The Zambian coach has now said in order for the team to challenge for the title, he will have to beef up a few areas in the squad in the on-going transfer window.

“There is nothing I will promise at the moment about the signing of new players but I will sit down with the directors of the club to find out what I will do during this transfer period,” Lwandamina said as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“Every day there is a lot of competition which also contributes to the league being tough and good, and the Tanzanian league is now getting bigger as people are being reached with information wherever they are unlike in the past.

“So we must be actively involved to make sure we beef up the areas I feel need improvement; it will all depend with the club bosses but we need to improve a few areas if we are to remain in title contention.”

Against Ruvu Shooting at the Chamazi complex, the ‘Ice-cream Makers’ took a deserved lead in the 34th minute when striker Ayoub Lwanga headed home from a corner kick but Emmanuel Martin levelled matters for Ruvu in the 53rd minute.

Azam regained the lead in the 60th minute when Mudathir Yahya powered home from close range but the goal was not enough to end their bad run as Fully Zullu Maganga ensured Ruvu got a point from the tie in the 70th minute.

The draw left them in third spot on 28 points while Yanga SC, who beat Dodoma Jiji 3-1 on Sunday, are top with 37 points from 16 matches and champions Simba SC, who edged out KMC 1-0 on Thursday, are second with 32 points from 14 matches.

Video: Koeman feels the heat as Barca held by Cadiz

37' Spezia don't clear their lines when Martinez's cross comes into the box from the right and Provedel is put under pressure by Lukaku. Both jump to try and get to the ball and it's the forward that reaches it, but his header hits the side netting.

35' Mora pulls away from Skriniar on the right and curls his cross into the box. It's too far ahead of Nzola in the middle though and De Vrij gets across to the near post to intercept it.

33' Young does well to wrongfoot Vignali and create some space to get a cross into the box from the left. There's no one at the far post for Inter though and Mora heads it clear.

31' Hakimi intercepts Bastoni's pass and plays a first-time throughball forward for Martinez to chase. He slips when the ball reaches him on the edge of the box though and Vignali clears his lines.

29' It's a good run by Bastoni down the left and he drills a low cross into the box. It's just behind Nzola at the near post and Handanovic rushes off his line to collect it before Acampora can get there.

27' Ricci goes long looking for Nzola through the middle with his throughball again, but he's asking too much of the forward. He has De Vrij with him the whole way and he can't get ahead of the defender.

25' Spezia are sitting back in their own half as they try to close down the space ahead of Inter. Barella is forced to switch play out to Young on the right, but he puts it straight out for a throw-in.

23' De Vrij sends his clearance high up the field and Lukaku is chasing it down for Inter. Mora reaches it first and plays it back to Provedel and it's almost cut out by the forward, but there's just enough on it.

21' Spezia are closing Inter down much higher up the field now, but the home side do really well to play themselves out of trouble. Skriniar tries to switch play out to Young, but it's a poor pass from him that's cut out.

19' Acampora steps up to take the free-kick that he won, and he goes for goal despite the distance. He lifts his effort over the wall, but it's always swerving well wide of the near post.

16' Inter break quickly on the counter after De Vrij intercepts Ricci's pass and he sets Lukaku on a driving run down the left. He puts an early cross into the box, but it's short and Bastoni clears his lines.

14' Spezia are starting to push forward with a bit more intent now and Mora plays a good throughball into Nzola. De Vrij gets very tight to him and ends up bringing him down from behind in his attempts to win it.

12' GOOD CHANCE! Inter have a free-kick on the right and it's whipped into the box by Brozovic. Nobody spots Martinez's run to the far post and he gets his head on it. He can't keep it down though and it sails over the bar.

10' Inter take the corner short to Brozovic and he pulls away from the challenge from Isajli before curling an effort towards the far post. It's always heading wide and there's no one there to get a touch on it for the hosts.

9' SAVE! Young does brilliantly to weave between two Spezia defenders and get into the box from the left. He fizzes a cross into the six-yard box and Provedel gets fingertips to it to send it wide of the far post.

7' Spezia are trying to move upfield after winning the ball back, but they can't get out of their own half at the moment. Mora switches play out to Deiola on the right, but he loses out to Young.

5' Ismajli was rushing back to try and close down Lukaku's run as well and he collided with the keeper when he slid in. He gets some treatment on his leg and it looks like he'll be able to carry on.

4' Lukaku times his run perfectly to stay onside and latch onto the throughball from Martinez. He tries to chip his shot over Provedel who comes rushing off his line but a deflection takes it out for a corner.

2' Inter are seeing more of the ball in the opening couple of minutes and it's patient play from the home side. De Vrij goes long looking for Hakimi down the right and he brings it down well before being closed down by Bastoni.

1' Lukaku gets the game underway for Inter!

The teams are getting ready to come out onto the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Inter have won 15 of their last 19 Serie A matches against newly-promoted teams (D3 L1).

Vincenzo Italiano makes eight changes to his team after their draw with Bologna. Only Provedel, Gyasi and Nzola, who scored both goals in that game, retain their places. Spezia are also without Julian Chabot due to suspension.

Antonio Conte makes just one change to the side that beat Napoli last time out as he brings in Hakimi for Darmian, who drops to the bench.

SPEZIA SUBS: Kevin Agudelo, Roberto Piccoli, Martin Erlic, Riccardo Marchizza, Giuseppe Mastinu, Paolo Bartolomei, Titas Krapokas, Nahuel Estevez, Salvador Ferrer, Diego Farias, Giulio Maggiore, Lucien Agoume.

SPEZIA STARTING XI (4-3-3): Ivan Provedel; Luca Vignali, Claudio Terzi, Ardian Ismajli, Simone Bastoni; A;essandro Deiola, Matteo Ricci, Luca Mora; Gennaro Acampora, M'Bala Nzola, Emmanuel Gyasi.

INTER SUBS: Matteo Darmian, Ivan Perisic, Christian Eriksen, Ionut Radu, Aleksandar Kolarov, Arturo Vidal, Andrea Ranocchia, DAniele Padelli, Danilo D'Ambrosio, Stefano Sensi.

INTER STARTING XI (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij, Alessandro Bastoni; Achraf Hakimi, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Roberto Gagliardini, Ashley Young; Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez.

Inter come into this game having gone unbeaten in their last eight matches in Serie A since losing the Milan derby (W6 D2) and have won their last five on the bounce. They face a Spezia side that are winless in their last five league games (D3 L2) since a 3-0 victory against Benevento in early November.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Serie A meeting between Inter and Spezia at San Siro!

LIVE: Sassuolo vs AC Milan

36' Berardi pushes over Kessie to hand Milan a free-kick in midfield. It's close enough for Calhanoglu to have a pop as he fires under the wall but it's nothing Consigli can't handle.

35' The corner comes out to Tonali whose thunderous shot from the edge of the box is blocked. So is Hernandez's effort. Now it's Sassolo's time to counter but Berardi has very few options.

34' Kessie intercepts Bourabia's pass and Milan go on the counter-attack. It doesn't work out first time so Milan keep possession and try again. Saelemaekers wins a corner for the visitors.

32' Hernandez shows intimidating pace to power towards Sassuolo's goal. Toljan does just enough to dispossess the Frenchman.

30' Chance for Sassuolo! Berardi fires a crossfield pass to Djuricic who reaches the box and finds Traore on the overlap. Traore cuts back to Berardi whose shot clatters off Romagnoli and out for a corner. Milan see the corner away as Calhanoglu is fouled by Berabia.

28' Sassuolo come back on the attack but they're not moving the ball around fast enough. Calabria's fluffed clearance almost puts him in trouble until Saelemaekers comes across to bail him out.

25' Sassuolo are building in confidence after their slow start. Berardi has another try from range, firing over this time, before the hosts win another corner off Calabria.

23' Berardi finds himself with some time on the edge of Milan's box and has a crack at goal. Donnarumma gets down low to his right to save it. It's a routine stop.

21' Sassuolo's German right-back Toljan gets up the other end and knocks the ball off Kessie for a corner to the hosts. Milan see it out fairly comfortably.

19' Hernandez's cross from the left is cleared by Toljan and Milan get their first corner of the game. Saelemakers blazes high and wide from outside the box from it.

17' Milan get a free-kick near the halfway line as Traore fouls Saelemaekers. It's floated towards Leao but Sassuolo get a free-kick as Berardi is blocked by Kessie.

15' Ferrari wins a free-kick for Sassuolo down the left flank as he's brought down by Diaz. Sassuolo are seeing plenty of the ball but are yet to create anything yet.

13' Sassuolo need to respond to this early flurry of Milan attacks. The visitors do not look like they are in the mood to mess around.

11' It's confirmed - Milan will not get a second goal just yet. Sassuolo breathe a sigh of relief.

9' Milan have the ball in the net again as Leao and Calhanoglu combine once more with Leao burning past Rogerio down the right to burst into the box. The Brazilian cuts back for Calhanoglu who slots home into the bottom left corner. The officials are taking a look for offside against Saelemaekers in the buildup...

7' Leao is being a nuisance for Sassuolo's backline. The Brazilian again gets caught offside from Calabria's throughball.

5' Milan are looking confident so far. Opta have confirmed that they took the lead after just six seconds. It's the fastest goal in Serie A history.

3' Donnarumma tries a direct pass from the back to send Leao through on goal. Milan's striker is offside though.

1' And we're underway!

The two sides are out on the pitch here in Reggio Emilia. Sassuolo are in their distinctive green and black home kit while Milan are wearing all-white.

Sassuolo have won just two home games this season, the lowest of any team in Serie A's current top seven, and haven't scored here since November. They're also winless in their last eight games against Milan. Will Milan show Sassuolo who's boss?

Sassuolo make six changes from their 1-1 draw away to Fiorentina last time out. Their midfield maestro Manuel Locatelli is suspended. There are three changes to the Milan side that drew 2-2 with Genoa midweek as Hernandez, Diaz and Saelemaekers come in.

SUBS: Emil Roback, Jens Hauge, Lorenzo Colombo, Mateo Musacchio, Ciprian Tatarusanu, Diogo Dalot, Rade Krunic, Antonio Donnarumma, Leo Duarte, Daniel Maldini, Samu Castillejo, Andrea Conti.

AC MILAN (4-2-3-1): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Alessio Romagnoli (c), Theo Hernandez; Sandro Tonali, Frank Kessie; Alexis Saelemaekers, Hakan Calhanoglu, Brahim Diaz; Rafael Leao.

SUBS: Kaan Ayhan, Francesco Magnanelli, Vlad Chiriches, Jeremie Boga, Lukas Haraslin, Gianluca Pegolo, Francesco Caputo, Federico Peluso, Mert Muldur, Pedro Obiang, Georgios Kyriakopoulos, Giacomo Raspadori.

SASSUOLO (4-2-3-1): Andrea Consigli; Jeremy Toljan, Marlon Santos, Gian Marco Ferrari, Rogerio; Mehdi Bourabia, Maxime Lopez; Domenico Berardi (c), Hamed Junior Traore, Filip Djuricic; Gregoire Defrel.

Likewise, sixth-placed Sassuolo have come back to earth with a bump after a lightning start to the season. While the goals have dried up for Roberto de Zerbi's side, they're still hovering around the European places and would very much like to keep it that way.

Serie A leaders AC Milan will be looking to regain their early-season momentum as their title tilt has taken a dent through two successive draws. Stefano Pioli's Rossoneri are really missing their injured star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede's teammates will need to keep fulfilling their goalscoring responsibility in his absence.

Hello! Welcome to our live text commentary of this Serie A match between Sassuolo and AC Milan at Mapei Stadium – Citta del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia.

Barcelona interim president backs embattled manager Koeman

The Dutchman still enjoys the full faith of the man currently sitting in temporary charge in the boardroom at Camp Nou despite mixed recent results

Barcelona interim president Carles Tusquets has offered his full backing to Ronald Koeman ahead of the second half of the season.

Barca slipped eight points behind La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid having played a game more after being held to a 2-2 draw by Valencia at Camp Nou on Saturday.

Mouctar Diakhaby opened the scoring for the visitors when he headed home unmarked in the box on the half-hour mark, before Lionel Messi levelled with a header of his own just before the interval - equalling Brazil legend Pele's record of 643 goals for one club in the process.

Ronald Araujo's spectacular volley completed a swift turnaround for Barca in the 52nd minute, but they were ultimately unable to hold onto their advantage. Maxi Gomez restored parity when he stabbed home Jose Gaya's powerful cross, and neither side could find a winner in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Barca are now in real danger of drifting out of contention in the Liga title race, with a crucial trip to Real Valladolid up next on Tuesday.

It has already been suggested that Koeman is on borrowed time in his role in the Camp Nou dugout, but Tusquets is still certain he is the right man to take the club forwards.

Asked if the Dutch manager's job could soon come under threat, Barca's caretaker president told Deportes Cuatro: "I am not in charge of anyone. Koeman is doing well, with great judgment and has my full support."

Tusquets added on Koeman's current state of mind amid his side's mixed domestic form: "I have gone to eat with him several times and I see him optimistic."

The former Netherlands head coach said a lack of self-belief cost Barca in their latest La Liga outing, while insisting there is no "attitude problem" within the dressing room.

"It was a difficult game. We fought back but have to be more focused," Koeman told Movistar post-match. "We made more of an effort in the second half to win the game but didn't create as many chances as we wanted.

"I don't think it was to do with an attitude problem. There was an irregularity to the whole game. We lost balls and doubted ourselves."

Mboma: Why I left Paris Saint-Germain for Gamba Osaka

The France international was forced to withdraw from the top of the Bundesliga table clash at Bay Arena early after straining his hamstring

Bayern Munich have given an injury update on Kingsley Coman after the winger limped off against Bayer Leverkusen.

Coman was handed his 15th appearance of the season as Bayern traveled to Bay Arena on Saturday.

The France international has been a standout player for Hansi Flick's side so far this term, but was only able to last 33 minutes of the top-of-the-table clash after going down with a hamstring issue.

Bayern were forced to bring on Leroy Sane as Coman gingerly made his way off the pitch, raising fears over a potential spell on the sidelines for the 24-year-old.

However, the German champions have now revealed that Coman only suffered a strain, meaning he will likely recover in time to return to action again after the winter break.

"Kingsley Coman only sustained a strain in his left hamstring during Saturday's Bundesliga top-of-the-table clash at Bayer 04 Leverkusen," an official statement on Bayern's website reads. "This was confirmed by a scan carried out by the FC Bayern medical department."

Flick's team were 1-0 down when Coman was withdrawn, as Patrik Schick opened the scoring for Leverkusen with a stunning volley 14 minutes into the game.

Newly crowned FIFA Men's Player of the Year Robert Lewandowski drew Bayern level just before the interval, capitalising on confusion within the hosts' defensive ranks to head into an empty net.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw as both teams toiled in vain for a winner in the second period, but Lewandowski had the final say deep into stoppage time.

The Polish striker's deflected effort ensured that Bayern returned to the top of the Bundesliga standings with a 2-1 victory, with the 32-year-old now boasting 17 goals from his first 12 domestic appearances this season.

Lewandowski, Coman and co will be back in contention for a place in Flick's starting XI when Bayern resume their campaign at home to Mainz on January 3.

Meanwhile Sane, after replacing Coman, was left unhappy as he was also subbed off midway through the second half and replaced by teenager Jamal Musiala.

Bayern manager Hansi Flick said afterwards: "When we make substitutions, we have to do it sensibly. If you see the second half, Thomas Muller is indispensable, Serge Gnabry improved in the second half, that's why I substituted Leroy Sane. We had to react like that because there was no other option."

Ayunga: Morecambe FC snap up Bristol Rovers forward

A case has been made for the African star who is the leading scorer in Jurgen Klopp's team this season

Mohamed Salah deserves to be the captain of Liverpool because of his outstanding contributions to the team, according to Egyptian legend Mohamed Aboutrika.

The 28-year-old started Sunday's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace from the bench, but he was introduced in the 57th minute and he scored two late goals to seal the Reds' emphatic 7-0 win at Selhurst Park.

Prior to the encounter, Salah expressed his disappointment after he was snubbed as captain for Liverpool's final Champions League group match against Midtjylland, in favour of 22-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold

After the watching his compatriot’s impact on Saturday, which took his tally to 13 goals in 13 Premier League matches this term, Aboutrika said the two-time African Footballer of the Year needs to be treated highly with the captaincy honour.

“Bruno [Fernandes] joined Manchester United a few months ago and is treated in a wonderful way, as he has received many awards in addition to the captaincy, why does this not happen with Salah at Liverpool?” Aboutrika told beIN Sports via King Fut.

“Salah is Liverpool’s main man, and no one can deny that. I am not saying this because of what happened in today’s match with Salah starting on the bench.

“But generally speaking, it is possible that Salah got a rest today from Jurgen Klopp and credit to him for being very professional, and playing 33 minutes at his best.

“Salah’s joy with the goals today is incomplete. He scored wonderful goals, especially the seventh goal, simply world-class.

“I repeat that he should be treated better, for example, the captaincy of the Egyptian national team is not his right because it is given by seniority.

“But in Liverpool, he is the most deserving and worthy of the captain’s armband. These things could seem simple, but it does matter for players.”

The victory in South London powered Klopp's side to the top of the Premier League table with 31 points from 14 games while Salah leads the goalscorers' chart by two goals, ahead of his closest rivals - Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tottenham Hotspur's Heung-Min Son.

Brazil into Copa final after tough Peru test

The Bayern Munich left-back was flattered to be included in the prestigious line-up, but still feels he has plenty of room to improve

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies is thankful for his "amazing" selection in the FIFA Best World XI, but admits "there are attributes of my game I can fix".

Canada international Davies on Thursday became the first North American player to be included in the FIFPRO World XI, having played a key role in Bayern's run to the treble last season.

The 20-year-old contributed three goals and ten assists in 46 outings, with his most notable display coming in the 8-2 demolition of Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Davies completed a four-man defence alongside Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos after the final vote in Zurich, capping his meteoric rise to prominence since moving to Allianz Arena from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018.

The young left-back says he is honoured by the acknowledgement from fans, journalists, national team coaches and captains, but still feels he has plenty to work on before becoming a complete defender.

"It means a lot," Davies told Bundesliga.com. "Obviously from a personal standpoint, for myself, there are attributes of my game that I can fix. There are other left-backs in the world that are better than me at some attributes but being able to consider myself as one of the best left-backs is amazing."

The Canadian also saw Robert Lewandowski win FIFA's Best Men's Player award and Manuel Neuer scoop the goalkeeping equivalent, and he is delighted to have the opportunity to learn from the Bayern duo on a daily basis.

"I'm learning from these two experienced players," he said. "Lewandowski, the best player in the world right now. It's amazing to learn from him, getting feedback from him. Manuel Neuer, a top keeper.

"You can't take anything away from these guys. I just soak everything in and learn from them."

Davies' latest outing for Bayern came in a hard-fought 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen, which ensured that Hansi Flick's side leapfrogged their opponents into first place in the Bundesliga standings.

"They were pressing us high but we knew that we had to stay patient during the first half," the Bayern star said of a game which saw Lewandowski hit another brace for the visitors. The second half we started attacking more and more, and I'm happy that 'Lewangoalski' can put one in again."

Burnley vs Manchester United preview: How to watch on TV, live stream, kick off time & team news

The Ruaraka-based charges are currently fourth on the table with seven points from four games

Tusker FC defender Eugene Asike has stated the mood in the team is good especially after their 2-1 win over Gor Mahia in their last assignment.

The Brewers have taken seven points from their last three games and will be lining up against Vihiga United on Sunday afternoon in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League.

The experienced defender is not expecting an easy game but he is optimistic about collecting another win.

"The mood in the camp is positive especially after getting a win against Gor Mahia," Asike said ahead of the game.

"We are looking forward to the game against Vihiga United, although we know it is not going to be an easy match but, we will do our best to get a victory.

"We have been working on or finishing because in our last game we had so many chances but we did not take them.

"I believe they deserve to be in the premier league and we will not take them for granted, we will take them seriously just the way we do in any other match hoping to get the three points."

The 27-year-old has also revealed what impact their 2-1 loss in their season opener had on the team.

"We did not start well, we had planned to get a win against AFC Leopards but we lost," Asike continued.

"We went back to the drawing board and got a draw against Bandari, won against Western Stima and Gor Mahia. I believe the team is coming up well and the coercion is good in the team and our fitness levels are increasing because we were not 100% fit when the season started."

Vihiga United started their campaign with a 1-0 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz. They followed it up with another 3-1 loss but this time around to Wazito FC. However, in their latest league game, they got maximum points after defeating Nzoia Sugar 2-1.

As a result, they are placed in the 11th position on the table.

They are playing the 11-time champions who are fourth on the table with seven points after two wins, a draw, and a loss in the four games played.

Mourinho: Our coaching method is world's best

The Nigeria midfielder was in action at Goodison Park as Carlo Ancelotti's side compounded the Gunners' Premier League woes

Everton midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed his appreciation of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for helping his development at the North London club.

Iwobi helped the Toffees defeat Arteta’s side 2-1 in Saturday’s outing at Goodison Park which stretched the visitors’ winless run to seven league matches.

Rob Holding turned the 24-year-old's cross into the back of his own net in the 22nd minute and Yerry Mina restored Everton's lead just before half-time, after Nicolas Pepe levelled from a spot-kick in the 35th minute.

Despite the Gunners’ poor run of results in the Premier League this season, Iwobi – who left the Emirates Stadium for Everton in August 2019 – remains grateful to his former coaches at the club, and Arteta, who played an influential role in his career.

"I wouldn't be where I am today, so I'm forever grateful for the opportunity they gave me,” the Nigeria international told Sky Sports.

"I can look to everyone, Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery. Even current manager Mikel Arteta, when I was playing under-21s at the time, he was coming back from an injury and would be playing for us.

“There's been a lot of people that have been able to help me.

"When I was breaking through, Arteta was still there and he was always helping - not just me, but any youngster - he made life easier when I was pushing through."

Saturday's home win fired Carlo Ancelotti's side to second on the Premier League table while his former club Arsenal remain 15th on the table with 14 points from 14 matches.

This season, Iwobi has played varying roles for Everton, as a midfielder and as a wing-back, however, he highlighted their fighting spirit as a key attribute in their resurgence as they chase a spot in Europe.

"Obviously we had the quality with the ball and defensive qualities but I feel like, in particular, the fighting spirit in the team is what's been standing out for us," he added.

"We feel like this could be a special season for us. Going off the back of last season, we're using that as motivation and we're hungry to put it right for this season.

"I feel like we have a lot of threat, not from just the main strikers, but we've got a lot of quality in midfield now.

"Going forward, we're such a threat."

Ten Hag on Man Utd win: First half was a 'mess'

The Burundian tactician says he will not allow the Kenyan custodian to leave the Tanzanian giants during the mini transfer window

Young Africans (Yanga SC) has dismissed rumours that Kenyan goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo is among the players set to leave the club in the mini transfer window.

The short window opened on December 16 and will run until January 15, 2021, and already reports suggested Shikhalo, who joined the Jangwani giants from Kenyan side Bandari in 2019, was among the players listed for an exit.

However, the Burundian coach has come out to dismiss the report by stating Shikhalo is a very important player in the team and will not be allowed to leave or released on loan.

Kaze has blamed the injuries which Shikhalo suffered at the start of the 2020-21 campaign as the main reason he has not been able to start ahead of first choice Metacha Mnata.

"Shikalo will still be in our Yanga team, as his support is still needed in my squad that is planning to take the championship this season, that is due to his high level," Kaze said as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“Farouk is a very experienced goalkeeper and he is also a goalkeeper who can guide his teammates in matches, so it is difficult to do away with a goalkeeper of this type in my goal team.

“Most of the injuries he suffered before the season started caused him to miss out on a place in the first team.

“At the start of the season, Shikhalo suffered an injury and lost his spot in the team, and while he was out injured, Metacha [Mnata] used the chance to show a great level and get a permanent position.”

Shikhalo has not started in any league match for Yanga this campaign, with first-choice Mnata playing in each of the 16 matches played, managing to concede six goals.

The good run has seen Yanga remain on top of the 18-team table with 40 points, while rivals Simba SC are second on 32 points but with two matches in hand, and Azam are third on 29.

Yanga have already made it clear that some players will be allowed to leave on loan during the short transfer window.

Real Madrid send Casemiro classy message ahead of Man Utd transfer

The Norwegian manager has praised his counterpart for turning the Whites into one of the hardest working teams in the English top-flight

Leeds United are the "fittest team" in the Premier League, according to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who says Marcelo Bielsa is "a coach with all the details".

United are currently preparing to take on their rivals in the top-flight for the first time in 16 years, with the Whites arriving at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Bielsa guided the Yorkshire club to promotion in 2019-20, and his team have made a huge impression since returning to English football's top tier.

Leeds are sitting 14th after their opening 13 fixtures of the current campaign, but have earned plenty of admirers with their energetic, attack-minded style of play which has garnered several impressive results.

The Whites' latest show of slick football in the final third came during their 5-2 win over Newcastle on Wednesday, and Solskjaer is wary of the threat Bielsa's men will pose his team this weekend.

“He’s done a great job with Leeds and he’s done a good job with many other teams as well," the Norwegian head coach told MUTV of the impact Bielsa has had at Leeds.

"You see that there’s so much going on and to analyse those games takes a bit of concentration and time. You can see he’s a coach with all the details and he’s got his teams running.

"They’re the highest running and sprinting team in the league, probably the fittest team, so that’s one of the battles that we have to stand up to. It’s going to be a physical game.”

Solskjaer added: “They’ve had I don’t know how many games with over 25 shots and they create chances. They go forward, it’s a good team to watch and as you said the games are entertaining.

"Then again, for us, this is about three points and standing up to the problems they cause us. You’ve got to solve those problems and give them problems yourself as well.”

United and Leeds had many memorable battles during Solskjaer's playing days, with the 47-year-old grabbing a brace during a 4-3 win for Sir Alex Ferguson's side at Elland Road in 2003-04.

“That was a good game for me. I remember those two goals fondly," he said. "I enjoyed a goal at Old Trafford, I think I came on and we were 1-0 down and I get over Ian Harte [at the] back post and headed it back down to the other post.

"That was a good moment for me as well. It was a good rivalry, it was a fierce rivalry. Of course, they were flying high, they had a very good team and did well in the Champions League, so the games were high level, good quality and we knew that they were important games for us to be able to win the league."

Qatar vs INEOS: What deal is best for Man Utd?

The ATK Mohun Bagan gaffer insists that it's impossible to score goals only in the second half, which has incidentally been the case so far...

ATK Mohun Bagan find themselves just a point above third-placed Bengaluru FC ahead of their Indian Super League (ISL) clash on Monday.

The Mariners have notched 13 points from six matches so far and head coach Antonio Habas wants to keep going with the chasing teams quite close behind on the points table. He expects a strong challenge from a Bengaluru side who are unbeaten in the league so far.

"I think it's impossible to win every match. In this season, the teams are more balanced and it's very difficult for all teams to keep on winning three points. Now, the reality is that the rest of the teams are near with not much difference (in points).

"Bengaluru is a strong team. They have experienced and competitive players. For us, three points (in this match) are the same as in other matches but I know that Bengaluru vs ATK Mohun Bagan is an important match. We respect the opponent and 90 minutes will decide the match."

ATK Mohun Bagan have scored all their goals in the second-half of games so far, including their latest win over FC Goa where a late Roy Krishna penalty settled the result. The Spanish coach dismissed suggestions that ATK Mohun Bagan soak up pressure and try to hit on the counter.

"It's impossible for us to score goals only in the second half. Normally, it depends on the situation deemed necessary to score goals. In the last match (against FC Goa), [David] Williams had a fantastic situation (opportunity) to score (in the first half). You have 90 minutes and the idea is to score goals when you can."

He added, "The idea in football is to get three points. I cannot play thinking about the possibility of drawing or losing. Obviously, sometimes it's better to draw than lose but the first idea is always to win."

Habas feels that the presence of players like Sunil Chhetri and Cleiton Silva in attack means that Bengaluru cannot be taken lightly. He went on to state that Chhetri has been the best Indian player in the last 15 years.

"I don't want to talk about an individual player of the opponent. I know that he (Silva) is a good player and I know that he had a good time (track record) in Thailand. No special tactics against Chhetri. Our idea is to mark the entire team. For me, Chhetri is the best Indian player in India for the last 15 years. His statistics are fantastic but I have to back my players to come on top.

"For example, Manvir (Singh) can be the best player in India. Normally, these things are for coaches to communicate with their players in person," he stated.

David Williams scored seven goals and assisted five last season. However, the Australian has struggled to hit the ground running this season. Coach Habas has thrown his weight behind the former Wellington Phoenix attacker and believes that it’s a matter of time before Williams is amongst the goals.

“Williams had some problems in the first (few) matches because of injuries. Now I'm happy with his recovery and I have a lot of confidence in him."

Habas’ teams are known to be miserly in defence and they have only given away three goals in six matches. The former Bolivia national team coach spoke of denying Bengaluru FC attackers space and time to maneuver.

"The idea is marking zonally and closing down the spaces. In football, you need space for crosses and to create moves. The idea is [to make sure] that the opponent doesn't find any space to attack."

Harambee Starlets to face South Sudan in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

The retired footballer has questioned some of Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt’s decisions in fielding some players

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes that the calibre of players at the Soweto giants is of low standard, saying had there been quality, they could have defeated Bloemfontein Celtic comfortably instead of the 1-1 Premier Soccer League draw on Saturday.

Chiefs failed to win for a sixth consecutive league game after being held at home, after surrendering Anthony Akumu’s early opener which was cancelled out by Cyril Lingwati.

Now the 12th placed Soweto giants could drop one place on the standings if either AmaZulu or Chippa United win on Sunday.

“Kaizer Chiefs looked much better in the first half as compared to other games but the quality is not there. That’s the reality that there quality is not there,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.

“If there was quality they should have led by four goals. We are talking about composure, being sure about what they were doing, playing in departments they should have scored four goals.

"Pound for pound with the name and brand Kaizer Chiefs against Celtic, there is history at Chiefs.

“Celtic were better than Chiefs, look at the second half. Kaizer Chiefs couldn’t even jump in their own half. There is love [for Chiefs] and let’s be realistic.”

Khanye also questioned coach Gavin Hunt’s tactics on an evening Daniel Cardoso was surprisingly fielded as left-back.

Siyabonga Ngezana was drafted as a right-back which is the natural position of Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who played as a centre-back where he partnered Eric Mathoho.

“He [Hunt] has [Siphosake] Ntiya-Ntiya on the bench who is left-footed and he plays right-footed Cardoso at left-back,” said Khanye.

“When they [Celtic] pressed Cardoso it was always a problem and they earned square passes from that. How can you play Ngezana at right-back and he had no speed? Celtic realised it and they attacked through him the whole game. He was the weakest link.”

As Chiefs struggled to break down the Celtic defence to add to Akumu’s strike, Khanye lashed out at Leonardo Castro for what he feels was a lethargic outing by the Colombian.

“I was happy to see Khama Billiat having a much better first half. The reality is that boy is giving them game after game but the guy who receives his passes will be too far and Castro is in the starting line-up week in, week out. Look at every team list, he is there. What is he giving to Chiefs?,” Khanye said.

“Can he create space for himself? He is lazy. When the team is attacking he stops and drops and starts running slow. There is no work rate there. He is tall but cannot win areal balls. It tells you about his timing when the ball flies over him.”

Chiefs will now seek to put their domestic woes behind them by shifting attention to continental business in their next match, where they host Angolan giants Primeiro Agosto in a Caf Champions League first round, first-leg match on Wednesday.
