Newcastle confirm Eales as chief executive officer after agreeing Atlanta deal

The USMNT forward played 70 minutes as the Canaries lost their fifth straight game to start the season

Norwich forward Josh Sargent admitted he felt mixed emotions after making his first Premier League start in a 3-1 home defeat to Watford on Saturday.

The U.S. international, who joined in the summer from Werder Bremen, played 70 minutes on his full debut before he was substituted.

Watford would go on to earn all three points behind a second-half double from Ismaila Sarr, continuing the Canaries' dismal start to the season.

What was said?

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Sargent said: "It's bittersweet. I'm very happy to make my debut. The team is frustrated, the fans are frustrated, we wanted to get the points. Very disappointed.

"It is what it is, we can't lose focus, we can't give up at all. We've got to be focused and get the points we need."

Sargent's debut campaign so far

Saturday marked Sargent's fourth Premier League appearance of the season, with the 21-year-old having come off the bench in his side's first three league matches.

Sargent also started and scored a brace in the Carabao Cup against Bournemouth last month.

Norwich still without a point

The newly-promoted Canaries are beginning life back in the Premier League in the worst possible fashion, losing all of their first five matches - while also extending manager Daniel Farke's horrendous top-flight run which stretches back to their last season in the division.

Norwich are only the fifth team to lose each of their first five matches in a Premier League campaign, with the previous four offering the Canaries some hope of staying up this term.

Southampton in 1998-99 and Crystal Palace in 2017-18 both survived after losing five straight to start the season, while Sunderland in 2005-06 and Portsmouth in 2009-10 were relegated.

The Super Eagles striker helped the Hornets improve on their slow start to the season with his second goal in the league

Emmanuel Dennis has become the second player to score Watford’s first home and away goals in a Premier League season after his opening goal against Norwich City on Saturday.

Before Dennis' goal at Carrow Road, Etienne Capoue was the only player to achieve the feat for Watford in the 2016-17 campaign.

The Nigeria international drew first blood for the visitors after powering his header past goalkeeper Tim Krul in the 17th minute.

It was Dennis' second goal of the season after he opened his Premier League goal account in their 3-2 win over Aston Villa on August 14.

Towards the end of the first half, Teemu Pukki canceled out the opener with his 35th-minute opener for Norwich.

After the restart, Senegal's Ismaila Sarr powered Watford to victory with his second-half double.

Sarr restored the Hornets' lead in the 63rd minute, courtesy of Joshua King's assist and he later sealed their second league win of the season.

The victory ended their three-game losing streak in the English top-flight and they moved to 10th on the table with six points after five matches.

Dennis was on parade for 73 minutes while his compatriot William Troost-Ekong and Sarr played the entire duration for the visitors.

Nigeria international Oghenekaro Etebo was later introduced in the 82nd minute for Tom Cleverly. Morocco duo Adam Masina and Imran Louza were unused substitutes.

Dennis has made a fine start to life in the Premier League following his permanent switch from Club Brugge in June and he was named the club's Player of the Month for August.

He will be hoping to continue his fine form when Watford host Newcastle United for their next Premier League game at Vicarage Road on September 25.

Fulham 1-1 Wolves: Player ratings as Whites & Wanderers share spoils

The defeat was the Glamour Boys' second in four league matches, having also lost to Mamelodi Sundowns while drawing with TS Galaxy and beating Baroka

The early-season optimism at Kaizer Chiefs took another blow as the Glamour Boys were beaten 4-1 by PSL newcomers Royal AM at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Victor Letsoalo had put the visiting side 2-0 ahead with a brace, before Sifiso Hlanti pulled one back for the hosts, only for a Sibusiso Mabiliso own goal to end any hopes of a comeback. Mfundo Thikazi then added salt to the wounds with a beautifully-taken 94th minute strike.

Royal AM were to sound an early statement of intent when Letsoalo struck the upright in the third minute, having found the space in the box to bring down a pass on his chest before firing in a volley.

Chiefs were to see plenty of the ball and they had the chance to turn that advantage into a goal in the 14th minute when Cole Alexander played a neat one-two with Khama Billiat before bursting in on goal, but his left-footed angled finish went just wide of the far post.

There was another good opportunity for the visitors in the 27th minute when Levy Mashiane raced onto a long ball, beating the off-side trap. But he took too long to get the shot away and the Chiefs defence was able to recover as Erick Mathoho and Njabulo Blom got back to win the ball.

While the KwaZulu-Natal side did enjoy a few opportunities, when they scored in the 34th minute it was against the run of play.

It was down to a brilliant cross from Mashiane, whose whipped ball from the right flank was guided home emphatically by the head of Bafana Bafana striker Letsoalo.

The goal lifted Royal AM and they were comfortably in command as the game went into the half time break.

The hosts upped the ante after the restart, but when chances came for Keagan Dolly and Alexander, both fired straight at goalkeeper Hugo Nyame.

Amakhosi were also denied what looked like a good call for a 53rd minute penalty after Royal AM captain Lesego Manganyi appeared to have kicked Billiat rather than the ball, in the box.

Having survived the Chiefs threat, the KZN side could have added a second goal when Tebogo Pontsane sprinted in on goal, following Letsoala's assist, but the former Bloemfontein Celtic man shot straight at goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

They didn't have to wait too long for the goal to arrive as Letsoalo curled in a sublime free-kick to double the lead on 65 minutes.

Chiefs were given hope in the 74th minute when finally luck went their way as Sifiso Hlanti's free-kick took a sizable deflection off the wall to wrong-foot Nyambe and hit the back of the net.

That hope evaporated just a minute later though when substitute Sibusiso Mabiliso deflected Zukile Mkhize's low cross past Petersen and into his own net.

With five minutes to go, Anthony Agay passed up on a great chance for the hosts to try and claw themselves back when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy from a Billiat corner.

That proved to be the last chance for Chiefs, who were then punished with the last move of the game, when following a swift counter, Thikazi beat Petersen with a lovely curling shot.

Clattenburg: Mikel and Chelsea row could have been 'worse than going to prison'

The former referee opened up on how the London club accused him of racism when he handled the Blues versus Red Devils showdown years ago

Former referee Mark Clattenburg has revealed how the John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata incident almost cost him his career in 2012.

The English official took charge of the Premier League showdown in which Manchester United defeated Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge in October 2012.

In the ill-tempered encounter, Branislav Ivanovic, and Fernando Torres were given their marching orders.

The Football Association investigated Clattenburg after the Blues claimed he had used racist language towards African star Mikel and Spain's Mata, but the referee was soon cleared of any misconduct.

In his autobiography ‘Whistle Blower’ as per The Daily Mail, the 46-year-old wrote that the contentious incident almost cost him his job.

“I knew to expect a tirade of abuse from Chelsea supporters, but I was not beating myself up over my performance. It was then that I heard a commotion outside the dressing-room door,” wrote Clattenburg.

“Before I get to the door it swings open, and with some force. John Obi Mikel bursts in and I can see the rage in his eyes. Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo and coach Eddie Newton are holding him back.

“Mikel is out of control; he’s trying to get at me. ‘I’m gonna break your legs!’ he shouts. "He’s swinging for me.

“I have to be clear here – and this is extremely important – at this point, there had been no mention of racism to me, either from Mikel or Di Matteo. No one had made any accusation of that nature.”

“I left Stamford Bridge in the people-carrier and as we made our way out of West London towards Heathrow, there’s a social-media notification on the screen of my phone saying: ‘BREAKING NEWS: CHELSEA ACCUSE REFEREE MARK CLATTENBURG OF RACIST COMMENTS’,” he continued.

“During those early hours overnight on the Sunday of the game, I realised the power of football clubs, the hold they have over the media. It was terrifying. It was the European champions against a referee – who would you believe?

“I am trapped. This could ruin my career. It could ruin my life. The fear is worse than going to prison. I am being called a racist.

“That is a real life-sentence, you don’t come back from that. Guilty until proven innocent, that is the English way.”

While the FA investigated Chelsea’s complaint, Clattenburg missed four weekends of Premier League matches.

However, he was soon cleared with the FA handing Mikel a three-match ban and fined £60,000 for threatening the referee.

Lens-Lille derby delayed due to crowd clashes as French football suffers latest bout of fan violence

Less than a month after Nice's clash with Marseille was forced to be suspended, Ligue 1 bore witness to another pitch invasion

Ligue 1 was once again the setting for an outbreak of supporter violence on Saturday, with the derby between Lens and Lille suffering delays after a pitch invasion from home fans.

The two rivals went into half-time drawn at 0-0 after a tense opening 45 minutes.

But they were forced to wait in order to restart the match as crowd trouble caused a temporary postponement in the Ligue 1 clash.

What happened?

Midway through the half-time break a group of Lens ultras flooded onto the pitch in order to confront their Lille counterparts, located in a different part of the stadium.

The attack seems to have been provoked by the actions of a section of the away support, who were earlier seen climbing on a fence separating them from home fans and throwing seats and other projectiles over the barrier.

After a brief fracas, the Lens ultras ran back to their own stand, while the match officials called for a momentary delay to the start of the second half while they evaluated the situation.

The two clubs came out to warm up and were eventually cleared to restart the derby, famed as one of France's fiercest fixtures.

The bigger picture

The melee witnessed on Saturday was the second such incident to befall French football's top division in less than a month.

Back in August, Nice's match with Marseille was forced to be suspended due to a pitch invasion from the home fans

The hosts were punished with a point deduction, while several Marseille players and staff, including star midfielder Dimitri Payet, were also sanctioned for their actions in provoking supporters during a bad-tempered match - which will be replayed behind closed doors.

Baba Rahman sees yellow, Dele-Bashiru shines as Reading beat Fulham away

The two African players produced another solid display as the Royals returned home with vital points from their trip to Craven Cottage

Abdul Baba Rahman and Tom Dele-Bashiru put up splendid displays as Reading won their second straight match in the EFL Championship after beating Fulham 2-1 on Saturday.

The two players from Ghana and Nigeria retained their starting positions after impressing manager Veljko Paunovic in their last league match which saw them defeat Peterborough United 3-1.

Despite playing away from home, the Royals dominated Fulham from the word go and it was Rahman, who was playing in his favourite left-back position, who initiated the move that led to the team’s first goal courtesy of Ovie Ejara in the 19th minute.

Ejara then grabbed his brace and the second of the day for the Royals in the 53rd minute to silence the home crowd, who later pulled a goal back courtesy of Rodrigo Muniz in the 86th minute but it was not enough to give them something from the game at Craven Cottage.

Reading started the game on a high note and in the 13th minute, Rahman and John Swift combined on the left as the Royals moved quickly, and the Black Stars' cross was half-cleared, and Nigeria’s Dele-Bashiru picked it up and but his shot went inches wide from a tight angle.

However, six minutes later, Rahman set up Alen Halilovic, who raced down the right and then cut inside before laying the pass to Swift, who in turn set up Ejaria to score.

Reading then scored their second in the 53rd minute when Ejara’s shot from outside the box easily beat Fulham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Rahman, who joined Reading on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, was then yellow-carded in the 58th minute after his shoulder-to-shoulder challenge with Nathaniel Chalobah prompted the referee to caution him.

Meanwhile, Ugandan international Uche Ikpeazu was an unused sub as Middlesbrough suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Blackpool.

It was Boro who took the lead in the eighth minute at Riverside after Marcus Tavernier scored from a header but Blackpool turned the game around in the second half with goals from Marvin Ekpiteta in the 62nd minute and an own goal via Grant Hall in the 78th minute.

Kenya’s Clark Oduor played for 90 minutes as Barnsley secured a 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Oakwell.

The game saw Nigerian Victor Adeboyejo also introduced in the second half but he could not help Barnsley get maximum points.

Elsewhere, Ghana’s Albert Adomah came on in the second half but could not help Queens Park Rangers who lost 2-1 at home to Bristol City while the Democratic of Republic of Congo goalkeeper Brice Samba kept a clean sheet as Nottingham Forest registered a 2-0 win against Huddersfield at The John Smith Stadium.

LIVE: Inter vs Bologna

15' A couple of fouls break up the flow of the game, which has been a little disjointed since Martinez's opening goal.

13' NO PENALTY! Sansone whips a free-kick into the box that Bonifazi flicks on and it deflects off Bastoni on the way through to Handanovic, who dives to punch clear. There are furious appeals for handball, but the referee waves them away.

10' Mihajlovic cuts a frustrated figure on the touchline. His men had started promisingly, but were caught out by a clinical counter-attack and are now chasing the game.

8' Coming into the contest, Martinez had failed to score in five Serie A games against Bologna, the most of any side other than Roma (six games), but has broken his duck against the Emiliani inside the opening six minutes this evening.

3' Bologna have started positively, keeping the ball well in the early stages of the game and probing for openings in the Inter defence.

1' We're underway at San Siro!

Bologna have equalled their best start to a Serie A season in the three points for a win era (7 points as in 2019/20 and 2002/03); the last time they won at least three of their first four games in a top-flight campaign was back in 2001/02.

Inter have won their last 17 home league games; only three teams in Serie A history have embarked on a longer winning run on home soil: Torino in 1948 (21), Milan in 1950 (19) and Juventus in 2014 (25) and in 2017 (33).

Meanwhile, Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic makes two alterations despite his side's 1-0 victory over Hellas Verona last time out. Olsen and Sansone come into the starting line-up, with Orsolini and Barrow finding themselves on the bench.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi makes four changes after the 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday. Darmian, Calhanoglu, Perisic and Dzeko all drop to the bench, with Dumfries, Vecino, Dimarco and Correa replacing them in the side.

Bologna substitutes: Arthur Theate, Emanuel Vignato, Sydney van Hooijdonk, Riccardo Orsolini, Adama Soumaoro, Luis Binks, Wisdom Amey, Federico Santander, Ibrahima Mbaye, Mitchell Dijks, Musa Barrow, Francesco Bardi.

Bologna (4-2-3-1): Lukasz Skorupski; Lorenzo De Silvestri, Gary Medel, Kevin Bonifazi, Aaron Hickey; Nicolas Dominguez, Mattias Svanberg; Andreas Skov Olsen, Roberto Soriano, Nicola Sansone; Marko Arnautovic.

Inter substitutes: Andrea Ranocchia, Alexis Sanchez, Matteo Darmian, Alex Cordaz, Aleksandar Kolarov, Roberto Gagliardini, Ionut Radu, Edin Dzeko, Ivan Perisic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Martin Satriano, Danilo D'Ambrosio.

Inter (3-1-4-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrj, Alessandro Bastoni; Marcelo Brozovic; Denzel Dumfries, Nico Barella, Matias Vecino, Federico Dimarco; Joaquin Correa, Lautaro Martinez.

A win for Inter would take the reigning Serie A champions to the top of the table - at least temporarily. However, they must overcome a Bologna side who are level on points with the Nerazzurri after three games.

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Serie A fixture between Inter and Bologna at San Siro in Milan.

Alexander-Arnold's absence for Liverpool explained as Milner fills in at right-back against Crystal Palace

The England international misses out on a meeting with the Eagles after being forced to pull out of Jurgen Klopp's plans

Trent Alexander-Arnold's absence from Liverpool's squad against Crystal Palace has been explained, with the Reds full-back ruled out through illness.

The 22-year-old has been denied the opportunity to form part of Jurgen Klopp's plans against the Eagles at Anfield as he takes in an enforced spell on the sidelines.

Liverpool have confirmed that Alexander-Arnold is not suffering with Covid-19, but he cannot line up in Premier League action as he feels under the weather.

What has been said?

With Alexander-Arnold missing out, the versatile James Milner has been asked to fill in at right-back.

Klopp said ahead of kick-off regarding the tweaks made to his side: "Trent was not planned. Trent woke up this morning and felt unwell. We just had to send him home.

"It's all fine, it's not Covid. We tested everything but he didn't feel well.

"We need to make changes but we need rhythm as well, that's why there are not too many changes in midfield. We need all the energy we can get."

What other changes have been made?

Andy Robertson is another notable absentee for Liverpool in the full-back berths, with the Scot being rotated out as Kostas Tsimikas steps back in.

The Reds were in midweek Champions League action against AC Milan, when Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara all started on the bench.

They come back in against Palace, with summer signing Ibrahima Konate also making his debut at the heart of Klopp's back four.

Senegalese star Mane is one goal away from reaching 100 for Liverpool, while Mohamed Salah needs only two more to hit a century for the Reds in the English top flight.

Mane makes Premier League history after scoring 100th Liverpool goal

The Senegal international often saves his best performances for matches against the hapless Londoners, as he proved again on Saturday

Sadio Mane seems to love lining up against Crystal Palace, with the Eagles once more suffering at the Liverpool star's hands as he took his Reds tally up to 100 goals.

The Senegal international struck just before half-time to put the hosts 1-0 ahead in Saturday's Premier League game.

And not only did he reach a significant milestone for his club, but he also continues a remarkable run of form in matches against the south Londoners.

Nine matches and counting

Mane's opener demonstrated once again that Palace are one of his favourite victims.

He has now scored in his last nine Premier League appearances against the club, a run that stretches back to August 2017.

No other player in Premier League history has managed such a feat, but in truth Mane has always revelled in these games.

Including his time at Southampton he now boasts 13 goals in 14 games against the Eagles, failing to find the net on just one occasion - a 1-0 defeat in the 2015-16 season which was also the only time which he failed to come out on the winning side in the fixture.

Liverpool had few problems in extending that victorious run, as goals from Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for the hosts at Anfield.

Centurion

The 29-year-old's century of goals, meanwhile, did not take long to arrive, despite the fact that he has often acted as the foil for Salah in the Liverpool attack rather than the Reds' prime threat in front of the net.

Mane needed 224 games to reach the milestone, a strike-rate of slightly less than one goal every two games.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp could not be happier with the forward's contribution, which now stands at three strikes in Liverpool's opening six games in all competitions this season.

“Sadio looks really good, he looks really sharp,” Klopp said in his press conference.

“I know we talk about these things when a striker misses some chances, but that he has the amount of chances he has, the amount of finishes he has, that’s actually the important stuff," he told reporters in the build-up to Saturday's match.

“Sadio is in a good moment; a really good moment physically and mentally as well, so really confident and you can see that. A player misses a chance and doesn’t look desperate or whatever, he has a smile on his face and he knows, ‘I could have done this or this better…’ and all these kind of things."

Varane talks up Ronaldo benefit at Man Utd & hopes to recreate Ramos partnership with Maguire

The World Cup-winning defender believes working with the iconic Portuguese on a daily basis will raise collective standards at Old Trafford

Raphael Varane believes working with Cristiano Ronaldo on a daily basis helps to make you a better player, with Manchester United set to benefit from the Portuguese's presence after taking him back to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils pulled off a stunning coup during the summer transfer window when returning the five-time Ballon d'Or winner to English football 12 years on from seeing him depart for Real Madrid.

Despite now being 36 years of age, Ronaldo has hit the ground running with three goals through his opening two games for United, and Varane believes the all-time great will help to raise collective standards in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

What has been said?

Varane, who played with Ronaldo at Real and made his own move to Manchester over the summer, told Sky Sports of the talismanic figure: "I think he is the best example in the world in terms of work ethic and winning mentality.

"Playing with this type of player, you improve every day. If he is still playing to such a high level at his age, it's because his work is amazing. I'm very happy to play with him."

Who else is Varane excited about?

Along with Ronaldo, Varane also worked with a number of other superstar performers during his time in Spain.

One of those was fellow World Cup-winning centre-half Sergio Ramos, with the pair forming a productive partnership that spanned a trophy-laden decade.

Varane's intention is to replicate those efforts in England alongside United captain Harry Maguire, with the duo showing signs of early promise.

"With Sergio Ramos, I had 10 years to get to know him, to get to know how he moves on the pitch and how I have to move to be complementary with him," Varane added.

"I think Harry Maguire is a great player but we have to work hard to feel comfortable on the pitch. It's the same with every defender in the team. It's important to feel connected. We have to move together and motivate each other.

"Every day, we are learning and improving."

United, who have taken 10 points from four Premier League games this season, will be back in action on Sunday when taking in a trip to West Ham.

Sources: Tottenham plan talks with Postecoglou

60' McNeil hangs a dangerous cross to the back post from the resulting corner, but Ramsdale does well to hold the delivery under pressure on his line.

59' SAVE! Cornet almost makes a decisive impact minutes after entering the action. He starts a move in the final third the results in Brownhill surging into the box. The Gunners clear as far as Cornet, who shoots on his right foot towards the target, forcing Ramsdale to palm his effort over the bar.

54' Burnley have displayed a stronger intent in the final third, but have not been able to penetrate the Arsenal backline yet.

52' CHANCE! Smith Rowe should do better! Saka makes a run at the Burnley defence before he offloads to Aubameyang. The forward steers a pass through to Smith Rowe in space, but the midfielder can only strike at a tame effort at Pope.

50' BLOCK AND SAVE! Mee tees up Gudmundsson to line up a drive that is blocked by Gabriel. Burnley keep the pressure on before Westwood latches on to a loose ball at the back post, but can only steer a tame effort straight at Ramsdale.

48' Gudmundsson and Lowton combine down the right flank to win a corner for the hosts. The Clarets need to up the ante at the start of the second half.

46' A good sign for the Gunners - Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 20 English Premier League matches when leading at half-time (W17, D3) dating back to 29th December 2019 against Chelsea (L1-2).

46' We're back under way at Turf Moor.

Burnley have struggled for quality in the final third in their bid to record their first win of the campaign. Ashley Barnes has had a couple of half-chances, but other than that the hosts have not tested Aaron Ramsdale. The Clarets need an improvement in the second half.

Martin Odegaard has handed Arsenal a 1-0 half-time lead in their Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor. The Norwegian curled home a sublime strike from the edge of the box from a free-kick after Bukayo Saka was fouled. The Gunners have been the better side and deserve to be ahead as they aim to string together back-to-back victories in the top flight.

45' + 3' HALF-TIME: BURNLEY 0-1 ARSENAL

45' + 2' Arsenal break on the counter just before the break, but Saka just cannot Pepe's offload in stride in the Burnley box allowing Lowton to clear.

45' + 2' Taylor works an offload to Barnes, who tees up Gudmundsson for a strike at goal. However, his effort on the edge of the box is charged down by White.

45' There will be two minutes of added time.

45' CLOSE! Smith Rowe comes inches away from adding a second for the Gunners. Pepe twists one way then the other before rolling a low cross into the box. Smith Rowe attacks it first time with the side of his right foot, but he sends his attempt narrowly over the bar.

43' Odegaard has been outstanding in the first half for the visitors. He has been at the heart of every attacking move.

41' Arteta will be pleased that his side are not only moving the ball well in possession, but have been committed at the back. It has been a team effort in the first half from the Gunners.

39' Arsenal clear the first cross, but Tarkowski hooks a cross back into the middle. It almost allows Barnes to connect on the volley, but Aubameyang and Tomiyasu converge to block the forward. Gudmundsson's effort from distance on the follow-up travels straight to Ramsdale.

38' Pepe brings down Taylor the left flank, presenting Burnley with another chance to threaten from a set-piece.

35' It is all going to plan for Arsenal at the moment. The visitors are playing with confidence and are moving the ball around the pitch to put the hosts under pressure.

33' Westwood curls a dangerous cross into the box and Ramsdale comes to make an unconvincing punch clear. Mee hooks it back towards goal, but it travels wide of the target.

32' Gabriel brings down Barnes on the right flank, presenting Burnley with a chance to hit back from the resulting free-kick.

27' Arsenal are settling into their rhythm, but are yet to threaten the Burnley goal. Arteta will be pleased with his side's range of passing.

25' Pepe is played into space down the left flank and he bursts into the inside channel. The Ivorian fires a low ball across the face of goal that Pope saves with relative ease.

23' Gudmundsson makes a probing run into the Arsenal half. He lines up a reverse pass towards Wood, but it evades the New Zealander and travels through to Ramsdale.

20' Arsenal drive forward from the middle of the park and space opens up for Partey to shoot, but his effort is charged down before Odegaard sees his rebound blocked.

18' Odegaard spreads the ball down the left flank towards Tierney. The full-back has space and time to deliver a cross, but he lifts his delivery into the hands of Pope.

16' Burnley are winning the 50/50 balls out on the pitch at the moment. Arsenal have not been allowed to settle into the game.

14' WIDE! Arsenal fail to clear their lines at the back and Brownhill capitalises. He lifts a cross into the box for Barnes to attack, but he rushes his free header and directs it well wide of the targer. That was a chance for the forward.

13' McNeil works the give and go with Westwood before clipping a cross into the middle, but Tarkowski can only plant his effort well over the bar.

12' McNeil has a run at Tomiyasu down the left flank and he wins a corner off the legs of the Arsenal defender. Mee and Tarkowski enter the both from the back for the set-piece.

10' OVER! Wood knocks a long ball down into the path of Barnes in the box. The striker lines up an effort on the half-volley that he just sends over the bar.

8' Arsenal break forward in numbers as Smith Rowe works the ball towards Pepe, but his attempted low pass towards Aubameyang is intercepted by Mee.

6' CHANCE! Odegaard releases Tierney down the left flank with a fine offload. He fires a low ball across the face of goal that Pope get a boot to. Pepe almost latches on to rebound, but he cannot control it before it goes behind for a goal-kick.

4' Tierney has space down the left flank and he floats a cross into the box, but Pope is on hand to rush out and make a comfortable claim.

2' Barnes finds room down the left flank and angles a cross towards Wood. The forward chests the ball towards Gudmudsson, but Tierney is alert to make the interception.

1' We're under way at Turf Moor.

After a run of 10 consecutive league defeats against Arsenal, Burnley are now unbeaten in their last three against the Gunners (W1 D2).

Arsenal have made two changes to their team that beat Norwich last week. Both come in the middle of the park as Smith Rowe and Partey replace Maitland-Niles and Lokonga. Both outgoing players are on the bench for the Gunners.

Burnley are unchanged from their loss to Everton last week. Dyche keeps faith in the same starting line-up, despite the defeat. Wood and Barnes continue to lead the line. Taylor hangs on to his spot in the backline even with new signing Cornet on the bench.

ARSENAL SUBS: Bernd Leno, Alexandre Lacazette, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Rob Holding, Cedric Soares, Nuno Tavares, Pablo Mari, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Gabriel Martinelli.

ARSENAL (4-1-4-1): Aaron Ramsdale; Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Kieran Tierney; Thomas Partey; Nicolas Pepe, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Bukayo Saka; Pierre-Emerick Aubamenyang.

BURNLEY SUBS: Jack Cork, Wayne Hennessey, Aaron Lennon, Jay Rodriguez, Maxwel Cornet, Nathan Collins, Erik Pieters, Phil Bardsley, Matej Vydra.

BURNLEY (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Matt Lowton, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Charlie Taylor; Johann Gudmundsson, Josh Brownhill, Ashley Westwood, Dwight McNeil; Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes.

Arsenal breathed a huge sigh of relief to secure their first win of the Premier League campaign, overcoming Norwich last week at the Emirates Stadium. Pressure was building on Mikel Arteta and defeat to Canaries would have bee unthinkable prospect for the Gunners. The Spaniard is still under the spotlight in the dugout and his team need to follow up their victory last week with another three points on the road against the Clarets.

Burnley are in dire need of a result this afternoon after taking only one point from their opening four matches of the campaign. Sean Dyche signed a contract extension during the week to keep him with the Clarets until 2025, but his players need to respond on the pitch to their manager. Ben Mee put his team ahead against Everton last week, only for the Toffees to launch a comeback win at Goodison Park. Burnley need a strong outing against the Gunners to kickstart their campaign.

Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Burnely and Arsenal at Turf Moor.

That #UCLFeeling

The former Italy international talked up the talent of the Nigerian striker after seeing him net a brace against Leicester City on Thursday

Ex-Italy striker Giuseppe Signori has drawn comparisons between "good" Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and former Chelsea hero Didier Drogba.

The Nigeria international accentuated his importance to the Parthenopeans having scored a brace in the Serie A outfit’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City in Thursday’s Europa League fixture.

The Premier League side lead by two goals at the King Power Stadium courtesy of Ayoze Perez and Harvey Barnes, but Luciano Spalletti’s men left England on a no winner, no vanquished note as the former Lille star found the net twice in the closing stages of the keenly contested encounter.

The former Lazio and Bologna striker was full of praise for Osimhen, and even pointed out similarities between the Super Eagle and Drogba – who plied his trade in France, England, China, Turkey, Canada and the USA before drawing the curtain on his trophy-laden career.

Signori thinks the youngster leading the line for his current team has the same predatory instincts as the Ivorian in the final third.

“They look a lot like each other physically and technically,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“He is good, he has everything: technique, strength, elevation, speed and power.

“He's a player who is still young and has room for improvement, and I think he showed a part of what he can do [against Leicester City].”

On the back of his man-of-the-match outing against the reigning English FA Cup kings, the 21-year-old has vowed to give everything to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona giants.

“I’m happy and we played as a team, even when we went two goals down, we kept playing as a team,” Osimhen said as quoted by Sky Sport Italia.

“I don’t want to set an objective. The club always believed in me, starting with these two goals is certainly important and I want to continue like this.”

“I have everything to give to Napoli, I want to stay healthy, avoid injuries and one step at a time we can together achieve our targets.”

Osimhen is expected to lead Napoli’s attack when they travel to Stadio Friuli for Monday night’s Serie A showdown versus Luca Gotti’s Udinese.

Messi wage 'not sustainable' - prez. candidate

The versatile 29-year-old has not figured for the Red Devils since January 2020 after struggling with a long-term knee injury

Manchester United defender Phil Jones claims to see "light at the end of the tunnel" for him at Old Trafford, with the 29-year-old enduring a nightmare 20-month spell on the sidelines.

The England international has not figured for the Red Devils since January 2020, with a serious knee problem forcing him to undergo surgery and face a frustrating spell watching on from afar.

Jones is now edging his way back into contention, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keeping a door open for him, and the versatile operator is hoping to leave the most difficult period of his career to date firmly in the past.

What has been said?

Jones told United's official club podcast after becoming something of a forgotten man: "I’m feeling good at the minute.

"Obviously, I’ve been through hell and back over the last couple of years. I struggled with my knee a little bit and [there] came a point after lockdown where I thought enough was enough.

"I kept myself in great shape over lockdown and came back. But I remember just training out here [Carrington] and going into the doc and saying ‘enough’s enough’. Unfortunately, there was going to be time off the pitch, which I knew was going to be difficult for me, but it was something that I had to do.

"Thankfully, I see the light at the end of the tunnel now, and I’ve been back training, played a few behind-closed-doors games and I’m feeling really good at the minute.

"It’s so good to be back out training with the lads and enjoying being a footballer again because for the last 15 months, it’s been all ‘daddy daycare’ and not much football."

Is Jones raring to go again?

Jones has been on United's books since 2011, when he was snapped up from Blackburn by Sir Alex Ferguson, and has taken in 224 appearances for the club.

He is only tied to a contract through to 2023, and faces fierce competition for places from the likes of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, but is determined to make the most of being pain free and ready to compete for competitive minutes once more.

Jones added: "[It’s been] tough. I think as a footballer, as a person, as a human being, that’s the lowest I probably ever felt in my life.

"You try and get a balance between football and family life but it was so difficult going home and trying to look after the kids. You’re there, but you’re not there, you’re not present. It’s nice to get that balance back.

"I think at first, I’ll be brutally honest, I found it really tough to watch football, just in general because you can’t do anything about it. You’re stuck, you’re off your feet. Coming into the training ground every day, it’s hard to get going because you’re going to be out for so long and I knew that getting the operation.

"But thankfully, I have a good team around me, family, friends, and I got through it."

Onyeka helps 10-man Brentford beat Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Nigeria midfielder played a role as the Bees grabbed their second league win of the season

Frank Onyeka came off the bench as 10-man Brentford stunned Wolverhampton Wanderers in Saturday's Premier League match.

The 23-year-old replaced Sergi Canos in the 68th minute, four minutes after Shandon Baptiste was given his marching orders after his second yellow card.

The outing was Onyeka's third Premier League appearance of the season following his permanent switch from Midtjylland in August

Before Baptiste's expulsion, Brentford secured maximum points with their two first-half goals.

Ivan Toney opened the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot in the 28th minute and Brian Mbeumo scored the second goal, six minutes later.

Another African star who was in action at the Molineux Stadium was Morocco's Romain Saiss, who played the first 45 minutes for Wolves while Ivory Coast's Willy Boly was an unused substitute.

The result brought the Bees back to winning ways after they suffered a 1-0 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion last Saturday.

Onyeka's introduction strengthened Brentford's midfield despite the numerical disadvantage as he managed just one clearance and one shot in 23 minutes of action.

They are now ninth on the Premier League table with eight points after five matches while Wolves are 14th with three points.

Next up for Brentford is a League Cup outing against Oldham Athletic on Tuesday before they host Liverpool for a Premier League fixture on September 25.

Earlier on Saturday, manager Thomas Frank relished his brief experience in the Premier League and he disclosed his desire to help the 2021 Championship play-offs winners retain their top-flight status.

"It feels good to be here to be fair. We would like to hang around here for a while. It is pleasing that we’ve performed well four games into this season but it is only four games,"  Frank told the club's website

"We need to constantly perform at this level. We are hungry and have unbelievable determination to show that we belong here. We need to show that hunger and determination for a long time and we need to work on that every single day.

"I try to speak as much as possible about being brave and taking the ball forward. We have the balance because we don’t try and just defend the box, we try to be as high as possible and win the ball to give us opportunities.

"In the established play we need to find a bit more quality on the ball to be bigger threats in behind."

LIVE: Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

38' CHANCE! How did he miss? Lovely play down the right wing, with Mane finding Salah, who passes to Henderson and the Liverpool skipper spots the run of Thiago in the box, who meets his cross and powers a header towards goal. However, Guaita makes a great stop to deny him, but can't stop Jota from picking up the rebound, who should have a tap in from close range, but he somehow skies his effort high over the crossbar.

37' PENALTY SHOUT! Benteke tries to get on the end of a deep cross into the box, but Tsimikas steps across his path and he then falls into Van Dijk. The striker is appealing a penalty for the block by Tsimikas, but nothing is given.

35' Liverpool are increasing the intensity of their play now, they are camped inside the Palace half at the moment and are forcing the visitors to sit deep and soak up the pressure.

33' Good defending! Jota finds space on the edge of the box and fires an effort towards goal, but Ward slides in and makes a great block to send it high over the crossbar.

31' BLOCKED! LIverpool press forward and Palace fail to clear the ball in their box, with Salah sliding it across to Thiago who fires a shot at goal from around the penalty spot. However, Guehi gets across and makes a great block. The hosts recycle it, but Salah's volley after a Tsimikas cross from the left is easily gathered by Guaita.

30' We’re at the half an hour mark now and it remains goalless between Liverpool and Crystal Palace, but both teams have had chances to open the scoring early on.

28' Liverpool are on the longest current league unbeaten run in the top four tiers of English football, going 14 league games without defeat since a 1-0 home loss against Fulham in March (W11 D3).

26' CHANCE! Ayew slides the ball through to Benteke, who evades Van Dijk and races through on goal, but he has Konate for company and the centre-back does well to stay with him. Benteke manages to get an effort away at goal, but Konate gets a touch on it and sends it wide of the Liverpool goal. Good defending.

24' Ayew whips a terrific ball into the penalty area looking for Benteke who was unmarked in between the two Liverpool centre-backs. However, the striker made his run too early and the flag immediately goes up for offside.

23' Free-kick to Liverpool in a decent position out on the right wing, a good opportunity to whip the ball into the box and test the Palace defence. However, the visitors defend it well and clear the danger.

21' Liverpool have made a few changes from midweek, with none of the starting back four from Wednesday playing today. This is something that Palace could perhaps exploit.

19' Penalty shout! Zaha gets past Konate and sprints into the box after a ball in behind the Liverpool defence. The centre-back then seems to lean in makes contact with Zaha, who goes down and appeals for a penalty. However, the referee waves away his appeals and nothing is given.

18' It's quite open at the moment, with neither team able to control possession in midfield, with Palace currently enjoying a little spell on the ball. However, they haven't yet tested Alisson since the opening few minutes.

16' SAVE! Tsimikas lays the ball off to Mane on the overlap, who then delivers a deep cross into the box that finds Henderson at the far post. The Liverpool skipper volleys an effort towards goal, but Guaita gets across and makes a great save from close range to deny him.

15' The link up play between Mane and Tsimikas down the left wing has been very good so far, with the left-back constantly pressing high up the pitch and overlapping Mane, providing another option.

13' After winning three consecutive Premier League away games against Liverpool between 2014-15 and 2016-17, Crystal Palace have lost each of their last four visits to Anfield in the competition.

11' There is a good pace to the game so far, with Liverpool looking eager to push forward and create something in the final third, meanwhile Palace look very dangerous on the counter-attack at the other end.

9' Decent chance! Mane does well down the left wing and beats Ward, then finds Tsimikas, who sends it into the feet of Jota in the box and he fires a shot towards goal from a tight angle. However, he sends it way off target.

7' This is better from Liverpool, they are keeping the ball in midfield, but are yet to really get it into the final third and test the Palace defence.

5' That's two chances within the space of a minute for Palace, they've made a really bright start to the game and Liverpool need to kick on.

3' OFF THE POST! Palace go close again! A deep cross comes into the box and Benteke powers a header a header towards the bottom left corner of the net. However, it strikes the post and then hits a Palace man and bounces wide. It wouldn't have counted anyway as the flag goes up for offside.

2' CHANCE! Palace almost take the lead! Liverpool fail to deal with a free-kick and don't clear their lines, so Gallagher chips it back into the box, which Zaha sprints onto the end of and just gets to the ball ahead of Alisson, flicking it towards an empty net. However, he doesn't get enough pace on it and Alisson manages to tip it onto the post, before it bounces away.

1' We're under way!

The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!

Meanwhile Palace name the same starting XI that beat Tottenham last weekend, with Edouard remaining on the bench, despite his goals in that game, with Benteke keeping his place.

Jurgen Klopp has made five changes to the team that beat Milan in midweek, with Trent Alexander-Arnold missing out through illness, while Joel Matip is rested. Meanwhile Robertson, Keita and Origi drop to the bench. They have been replaced by Milner, Van Dijk, Thiago, Mane and Konate who makes his debut.

CRYSTAL PALACE SUBS: Odsonne Edouard, Will Hughes, Martin Kelly, Michael Olise, Nathaniel Clyne, Jack Butland, Jairo Riedewald, James Tomkins, Luka Milivojevic.

CRYSTAL PALACE (4-3-3): Vicente Guaita; Joel Ward, Marc Guehi, Joachim Andersen, Tyrick Mitchell; Cheikhou Kouyate, James McArthur, Conor Gallagher; Jordan Ayew, Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha.

LIVERPOOL SUBS: Nathaniel Phillips, Joe Gomez, Divock Origi, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Caoimhin Kelleher, Andrew Robertson, Takumi Minamino.

LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; James Milner, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, Konstantinos Tsimikas; Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane.

Palace picked up their first victory of the season last weekend, beating Tottenham 3-0, with new signing Odsonne Edouard bagging a brace after coming off the bench.

Liverpool remain unbeaten in all competitions so far this season, having picked up 10 points in their opening four Premier League games, to sit third in the table. Meanwhile they won their opening Champions League group game against Milan 3-2 at Anfield in midweek.

LIVE: Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Club

21' A reckless high-footed challenge from Kondogbia offers Athletic a useful set-piece opportunity 30 yards from goal, but they cannot capitalise on the chance and the home side clear their lines.

19' They have made a bright start today, but Athletic have failed to win in their last seven league games in Madrid, since a 1-0 victory against Leganes in April 2019.

17' Another corner for Athletic is thrown high into the area, but Garcia is penalised for an apparently over-aggressive attempt to win the ball aerially.

15' SO CLOSE! Griezmann gets the ball stuck under his feet when presented with a great chance from close range, so his weak shot is easily hacked clear just in front of the line by Balenziaga. With a better first touch, Atleti could be leading.

13' Another testing cross from the visitors is glanced clear by Savic's head. Athletic are growing into the game and are causing some consternation at the back for the champions.

11' Simeone indicates his frustration, as an ambitious cross-field ball fails to find the run of Trippier and Atletico concede possession.

9' Athletic have their first corner, from the right, but Muniain's out-swinging cross is headed clear by Hermoso at full stretch.

8' Garcia is unfortunate not to latch onto a cross from deep on the right, as his run is just short; allowing the ball to drift harmlessly to safety.

6' Simon collects calmly after Savic heads tamely into the ground from just inside the box, following the game's first corner-kick.

4' The hosts are largely on top in the opening few minutes, and Llorente earns a corner on the right-hand side as his cross is blocked.

2' An early half-chance is spurned by Atletico, as Griezmann's left-footed shot from the right side of the six-yard box goes just wide of Simon's near post.

1' We are under way at the Metropolitano!

The players are lined up and ready to start proceedings in Madrid.

Second-half goals from Dani Vivian and Inaki Williams saw Athletic record a 2-0 victory over Mallorca at San Mames last time out, and today Williams reaches 200 consecutive La Liga appearances - becoming only the second player to acheive that feat of consistency, after Jon Andoni Larranaga (202).

At home, Atletico remain unbeaten in La Liga against Athletic under Simeone, who has overseen nine wins and a draw versus the Basque side since taking the reins in Madrid. However, today's hosts have won just two of their last five league meetings between the clubs in all - after winning nine of their previous 11.

SUBS: Ander Capa, Oier Zarraga, Nico Williams, Unai Nunez, Mikel Vesga, Alex Petxarroman Eizagirre, Jon Morcillo, Jokin Ezkieta, Asier Villalibre, Oscar De Marcos.

ATHLETIC BILBAO (4-4-2): Unai Simon; Mikel Balenziaga, Inigo Martínez, Dani Vivian, Inigo Lekue; Alex Berenguer, Dani Garcia, Unai Vencedor, Iker Muniain; Raul Garcia, Inaki Williams.

SUBS: Matheus Cunha, Ivan Saponjic, Sime Vrsaljko, Felipe, Joao Felix, Yannick Carrasco, Luis Suarez, Hector Herrera, Benjamin Lecomte.

ATLETICO MADRID (3-5-2): Jan Oblak; Jose Gimenez, Mario Hermoso, Stefan Savic; Renan Lodi, Rodrigo de Paul, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Marcos Llorente, Kieran Trippier; Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa.

After registering a 2-1 victory over Espanyol last time out in the league - with goals from Yannick Carrasco and Thomas Lemar securing another three points - today's hosts were in Champions League action on Wednesday night; opening their group-stage campaign with a goalless draw at home to Porto.

Atleti will be seeking to continue their strong start to the 2021-22 La Liga campaign today, as Diego Simeone's side have picked up 10 points from their opening four matches to sit third in the early table. Meanwhile, Athletic occupy fifth, having posted a total of eight points from their first four fixtures.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Atletico Madrid v Athletic Bilbao from the Metropolitano!
