Guardiola on Man City success: We have a lot of money to buy incredible players

The Spanish manager joked about his side's recent 19-game run, firing a subliminal shot at his team's critics

Pep Guardiola jokingly said that money is the biggest reason behind Manchester City's success as the club continued their unbeaten run.

With Wednesday's win over Borussia Monchengladbach, City have now won 19 games in all competitions.

Thanks to their recent run, Guardiola and co. are currently top of the Premier League and, thanks to a 2-0 win on Wednesday, are one step closer to a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals.

What did Guardiola have to say?

"We have a lot of money to buy a lot of incredible players," Guardiola said at his postmatch press conference when asked how his team has won 19 in a row.

He added: "It is true. Without good quality players, we cannot do it. The humanity of this group, the players are fantastic and have an incredible relationship. They play every game to think just win that game.

"Today, enjoy the night and then think about West Ham. When people talk about the second leg, the second leg is in three weeks so now the next target is West Ham. That is all I am concerned with."

How much money has City spent?

Over the last 20 years, Manchester City have spent nearly £2 billion ($2.8bn) as the club has rocketed into perennial contenders on both the domestic and European stage.

The club has spent over £500m ($707m) since Guardiola took over in 2016, bringing in players like Ilkay Gundogan, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and RIyad Mahrez.

However, the club's biggest overhaul has come in defence since the Spaniard's arrival, with Manchester City bringing in Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake and Benjamin Mendy in recent years.

What's next for Manchester City?

Manchester City remain the Premier League leaders, having amassed a 10-point lead over second-place Manchester United.

Next up is a clash with West Ham on Saturday before a meeting with Wolves on Tuesday.

On March 7, though, Manchester City will face one of the more important matches of their season as they welcome Manchester United to the Etihad.

Guardiola wants Man City to be more 'clinical' despite Gladbach victory

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Bernardo gave City a strong advantage from the first leg, but the winning margin could have been even wider

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola called on his charges to brush up on their finishing after recording a dominant 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday.

The Premier League leaders were in control throughout in the Champions League last-16 clash, scoring in each half through Gabriel Jesus and Bernardo Silva to take a clear advantage in the tie.

Guardiola, however, believes that the scoreline could have been even more comfortable with more precision in front of goal.

What did Pep say?

"In general we played really well. We were not clinical enough up front with the actions - the one against ones with the keeper, with the defender. We have to be more clinical in this competition, you have to be better," he told reporters after the final whistle.

"But in general, no complaints. I know how physical and how well-organised they are. They play with a diamond, they put a lot of players inside with Stingl, with Neuhaus and Hoffman, a player runs in behind her to defend a bigger space.

"It was a good game. Kyle Walker was exceptional today. The game he played, it was a good game - the first step and, many weeks until the second leg and now just thinking recovery for the game against West Ham in three days.

"In this competition, we don't have much margin. The actions, they will have one against one or three again two. In our position, you have to at least finish the action, make Sommer, the keeper, make a save and we didn't do it.

"We created a lot of chances arriving there in the final third. The process was good. We committed central defenders to arrive to the wingers in that position and we have to finish better.

"And in this competition, you have to improve. But it was just today it didn't happen, another day it will be another player. They have to know that in this competition - because in Premier League always we can drop points but you have a margin. In this competition, you don't have a chance."

What's next for City?

Following their Champions League exploits, City's focus turns back to domestic matters as they look to defend their 10-point lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Pep's men visit West Ham on Saturday, while their closest challengers Manchester United and Leicester City are in action the following day against Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

The second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, meanwhile, will not take place until March 16, when City and Gladbach meet at the Etihad Stadium.

'We have to be braver' - Neuhaus disappointed with Gladbach performance in Man City defeat

The German side created few chances and were pinned in their own half most of the contest

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus walked away from Wednesday's 2-0 defeat against Manchester City wishing his side hadn't wilted so easily under the pressure of a record-setting opponent.

Monchengladbach were pinned within their own half most of the game, and when they did win possession their lack of composure on the ball led to repeated giveaways. It was not the display one would expect from a last-16 Champions League team.

Neuhaus wasn't alone in his thinking about the performance, as manager Marco Rose and team-mate Lars Stindl offered similarly critical assessments after the defeat.

What did Neuhaus say?

“We wanted to be courageous with our limited chances and I felt we did that well at times," Neuhaus told DAZN.

"City played with a very high line and if we’d been better with the final ball in behind, there might have been more in it for us. We have to be braver in the second leg.

“Manchester City were really good in possession, which meant we did a lot of running tonight. We had the odd chance in transition here and there but didn’t execute them cleanly.”

How did others respond to the defeat?

"Especially in the first half my players sometimes forgot about how we wanted to attack, because we were busy with defending," Rose said.

"It was a little better after the break, but we were not accurate enough.

"In the end, that is simply a top team. Against that team in a shape like that you must be perfect and every pass must fit."

Stindl added: "In possession we weren’t brave enough, made too many basic mistakes and our only half-chances came right at the end. “We ran a lot, as we knew we’d have to, but we have to admit we deserved to lose."

Mendy overwhelmed by first European goal for Real Madrid - 'I didn't even know how to celebrate!'

The former Lyon man broke his Champions League duck in style to give the Blancos a crucial victory

Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy admitted he was not sure how to mark his first-ever goal in European competition after providing the Merengue with a crucial away strike against Atalanta on Wednesday.

The left-back came up with the only goal of Madrid's 1-0 victory with just four minutes remaining after the visitors had played almost the entire match with a one-man advantage due to an early red card for Remo Freuler.

Defeat at home means Atalanta must score at least twice in Madrid should they hope to win the tie without a penalty shootout.

What was said?

Amid the euphoria of sealing his team's last-gasp victory, Mendy confessed that he was at a loss after seeing the ball go in.

"I didn't even know how to celebrate because it was my first ever European goal," he told reporters after the final whistle.

Coach Zinedine Zidane, though, warned that the tie was far from over.

"It took us some time, but we scored a very important goal. This is a good result," he said.

"Isco played a good game, we got ourselves a good result but the tie isn't over yet.

"We played a very strong team, defensively they played well. And the most important thing is the win. We didn’t concede and we know there are lots of injuries but we’re not giving many chances away."

The bigger picture

The last two seasons have seen Mendy come to the fore at left-back, a spot which had been the personal property of Brazil ace Marcelo at the Santiago Bernabeu for over a decade.

Marcelo has been restricted to just 10 appearances in all competitions this term and was not on the bench for Wednesday's match as he continues his recovery from a muscle injury.

Mendy, who joined Madrid from Lyon in the summer of 2019, now appears to be the undisputed starter for Zidane on the left side of defence, and recent transfer gossip suggests that Marcelo will be allowed to leave at the end of the season, with Juventus one of the clubs touted as a possible destination for the 32-year-old.

Guardiola: When I see Bayern, I don't think we're Champions League favourites!

The Manchester City manager says he doesn't regard his side as the frontrunners in European competition

Pep Guardiola says that he believes that Bayern Munich are favourites to win the Champions League despite the praise for Manchester City in recent weeks.

With Wednesday's 2-0 triumph over Borussia Monchengladbach, City have now won 19 consecutive matches in all competitions,

However Guardiola doesn't believe that his side's winning run makes them favourites given their history in the Champions League.

What did Guardiola have to say?

"In general, we controlled the game. Unfortunately today we were not clinical enough up front," he told BT Sport. "That is something we have to improve in this competition. Up front, we have to be more clinical. In this competition, you have to be perfect to make sure you go through.

"When I see Bayern Munich I don't think we are favourites. My target is West Ham in three days.

"If people say we are favourites we have to accept it, but a team who in their whole history has been a semi-final once? OK, they say it, we have to accept it."

Guardiola hails defence amid winning run

With his side now top of the Premier League and one step closer to the Champions League quarter-finals, Guardiola was quick to hail Manchester City's defence for their efforts over the last few months.

City have now kept 13 clean sheets throughout that 19-match run, with Guardiola saying that his backline has been the catalyst behind the team's success.

"That is the reason why we're incredibly solid for 19 matches in a row," he said at his press conference.

"Everyone is involved. The defenders concede just one on target. "You have to learn this, all of you, because we make an incredible effort up front with Raz, Phil, Gabriel, Gundo and Bernardo, everyone.

He added: "Football is not attack and defence; it's all together."

Manchester City set away wins record with Champions League triumph over Borussia Monchengladbach

Pep Guardiola's side has now won 12 consecutive matches away from the Etihad, setting an English record

Manchester City's dominance away from home continued on Wednesday as Pep Guardiola's side took down Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany.

Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus fired the goals, leading the way in a 2-0 win for the Premier League leaders.

The victory moves Manchester City one step closer to the quarter-final round of the Champions League as they continue their bid for a first-ever triumph in the competition.

The numbers behind City's away dominance

With Wednesday's triumph, Manchester City have now won 12 consecutive away matches in all competitions, which breaks the record for an English top-flight side.

The previous mark was already held by Manchester City, who won 11 games in a row away from home in 2017.

Additionally, Manchester City are the first team to record a clean sheet in each of their first four away matches of a Champions League campaign since their crosstown rivals Manchester United did so during the 2010-11 tournament.

During this season's Champions League run, Manchester City have faced just nine shots in those four away games, allowing just 13 total touches in their box.

The win over Gladbach bodes well going forward, as Manchester City have progressed from all four of their Champions League two-legged knockout ties in which they've won the first leg away from the Etihad.

Jesus' last 16 track record

Jesus has thrived in the Champions League round of 16, as he scored the second of City's two goals on the day.

With the finish, Jesus has now scored in all five of his Champions League appearances in the last 16, including scoring at this stage in each of the last four seasons.

Foden joins Fabregas and Walcott

Phil Foden continues to be a key figure for Manchester City, as he matched a pair of former Premier League stars with his appearance on Wednesday.

Foden was named to Manchester City's starting XI for the fourth time in the Champions League knockout stage, as he featured for 80 minutes before being replaced by Ferran Torres.

In the process, he became the third player to feature in four Champions League knockout games before turning 21, joining former Arsenal stars Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott.

'Joao gave a great ball' - Bernardo marvels at 'amazing player' Cancelo after sublime Champions League assist

The Manchester City full-back's diagonal cross was so good that one of the shortest players in the match headed it in with ease

Bernardo Silva couldn't believe the accuracy of Manchester City team-mate Joao Cancelo's first-half diagonal cross, which allowed him an easy header past Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

As one of the shortest players on the pitch, Silva doesn't often score those types of goals - a testament to the quality of delivery from Cancelo.

Silva recognised it as much after the 2-0 Champions League victory, praising Cancelo as "an amazing player" with whom he shares a "good connection" from their developmental years together at Benfica.

What did Silva say about Cancelo?

"Usually I'm not [so good with my head]," Silva told BT Sport. "I try to practice a lot. I think tonight I was lucky Joao [Cancelo] gave me a great ball.

"He's an amazing player. I played with him seven years at Benfica, we're the same generation. We have a good connection. He knows my timing and I know how good he is on these balls."

How did Silva respond to the result?

"We need to keep going because we're only halfway through," he said. "We have a map, a way of playing. Players get injured or cannot play and our style doesn't change.

"It was a good game for us, a good win. In this competition you can make a mistake and you're out. We tried to play simple football and not make mistakes. It's not finished yet but it's a good win."

Sarr equals best goalscoring tally in Watford's win over Blackburn Rovers

The Senegal international helped the Hornets continue their push for Premier League promotion with a crucial away win in Blackburn

Senegal's Ismaila Sarr has equalled his best goalscoring tally in a league season after he scored his eighth Championship goal in Watford's 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.

Sarr doubled the visitors' lead in the 38th minute, 13 minutes after Joao Pedro opened the scoring at Ewood Park.

The strike made the Senegalese forward Watford's second highest goalscorer this season, after Joao Pedro who has notched nine goals this campaign.

The last time Sarr scored eight goals in a league season was during the 2018-19 at Rennes - his last season in the Ligue 1 before he moved to Vicarage Road for a club-record fee in August 2019.

Towards the end of the first-half, Harvey Elliot pulled a goal back for Blackburn Rovers but Ken Sema restored the Hornets' two-goal lead with the match-winning goal in the 61st minute.

Ben Brereton reduced the deficit for Rovers eight minutes from time but it was not enough to inspire a comeback as they lost their fifth league match in a row.

Watford, however, boosted their promotion push with the victory as they remain unbeaten in their last five matches.

They climbed to third in the Championship table, level on 60 points with second-placed Brentford after 32 games while they trail leaders Norwich City by seven points.

Sarr played the entire duration of the encounter alongside Nigeria centre-back William Troost-Ekong while DR Congo's Ryan Nyambe featured for Blackburn Rovers.

Sarr and Troost-Ekong will turn their attention to Saturday's trip to AFC Bournemouth and they will aim to help Xisco Munoz's side continue their fine form in the Championship.

Alba admits Barcelona 'struggled' to Elche victory and hopes win 'will help confidence'

The win stemmed a run of disappointing results, possibly letting Ronald Koeman's side find its footing at a crucial stage

Jordi Alba admitted Barcelona were far from perfect in their 3-0 league win over Elche on Wednesday but stressed the importance of the end result given the far worse showings that preceded it.

The club lost 4-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last Tuesday before drawing with Cadiz over the weekend.

Alba delivered Barcelona their third goal against Elche following strikes from Lionel Messi as a tepid opening 45 minutes gave way to a much stronger second half. The win moved them into third place in La Liga, behind Real Madrid and leaders Atletico Madrid.

What did Alba say?

"This will help our confidence a lot," Alba told reporters.

"The draw (with Cadiz) was a huge blow to the whole team and showed that if we are not at our 100% best we find it very hard to win. We struggled on Sunday and in the first half here too but we were better in the second and the goals arrived."

What's next for Barcelona?

Barcelona will face Sevilla in consecutive matches - first in La Liga, and then in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final where they trail 2-0 on aggregate. Sevilla sits just two points behind them in the La Liga table.

Their last-16 decider against PSG, meanwhile, comes on March 10.

Solskjaer confirms Manchester United youngsters Shoretire and Diallo will feature against Real Sociedad

The African stars will get a chance to play when the Red Devils welcome the Spanish club to Old Trafford

Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Nigeria’s Shola Shoretire and Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo will play in the second leg of their Uefa Europa League match against Real Sociedad on Thursday.

A week ago in Turin, Diallo made his debut for Solskjaer’s side after replacing Mason Greenwood in the 83rd minute while 17-year-old Shoreitre made his first-team bow against Newcastle United as an 89th-minute substitute on Sunday.

Manchester United go into Thursday’s Europa League clash with a four-goal advantage from the first-leg and Solskjaer has confirmed the African duo will play a part against Real Sociedad.

Following their substitute debuts, Diallo and Shoretire are chasing their first start for the Red Devils.

Solskjaer said in a press conference: "Hannibal (Mejbri) is injured, he got injured in the reserves, unfortunately he will be out for a month he was just coming into our squad and unfortunately he’s out.

"Amad (Diallo) and Shola (Shoretire) will be involved, they’re in the squad and I’m not going to tell you if they’re starting or not.”

The Norwegian tactician also added that he is interested in grooming young players only if they have the 'good attitude'.

He added: "Of course it’s down to each manager how they think, I believe in the youth I believe if young players if they get a chance they can really develop, improve, impress even surprise you and that’s just part of this club and it’s part of me.

"I’ve always loved working with young players and hungry players with a good attitude if you’ve got a good attitude you’ve got a good chance if you don’t then there’s less of a chance."

'We needed to win' - Koeman relieved as Barcelona see off Elche

The manager admitted that his team was in desperate need of a victory as they look to stay in La Liga's title race

Ronald Koeman admitted that Barcelona "needed to win" against Elche as the Spanish giants look to break out from their recent struggles.

Barca picked up a 3-0 win over Elche on Wednesday, led by two goals from Lionel Messi and a third from Jordi Alba.

The win comes in the wake of a 4-1 battering at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League as well as a draw with Cadiz in La Liga.

What did Koeman have to say?

“We needed to win after the two results,” Koeman said. “We played a great second half, we made the difference. In the first half we should have done better.”

He added: "Surely, having won today, tomorrow will be different. It is normal if you leave two points against Cadiz when it was time to cut back with those at the top. You have to close this bad feeling with good games and good results."

Koeman on Messi's frustration

Messi was a frustrated figure in the first half, a fact which was noticed by Koeman early on.

According to Koeman, the Argentine was left frustrated by Barca's lack of intensity early on, something that the team remedied in the second half starting with Messi's 48th-minute goal.

"Everyone has seen that we lacked intensity and rhythm of the ball, especially. It is good that Messi, as captain, asks for intensity.

"In the first half we were lazy, without rhythm, despite the two occasions. In the second half, much better. With more rhythm of the ball. We also scored fast. We were much better in the second half than in the first."

Barcelona in La Liga

The Catalan club has struggled in La Liga this season compared to their usual expectations, having lost five and drawn four in 25 games.

Those results have Barca sitting third in the league, two points behind Real Madrid and five points behind Atletico Madrid, with the leaders having a game in hand.

Barca would fall to fourth if they fall to Sevilla this weekend, as Sevilla currently sit two points behind Koeman's side with one fewer game played.

"It is important because we have lost many points at the beginning of the season, most of them at home," Koeman said of his team's efforts this season.

"If we do not win more and more, we will have no chances. In the last 13 or 14 games we have to be almost perfect. The problem has been in the beginning of season."

"In general, you can tie a game at home," he added. "The points that we lost at the beginning of the season show that it cannot be forgiven."

Rangers star Aribo gives credit to family support during injury nightmare

The Super Eagles midfielder spent close to eight weeks on the sidelines earlier this season after suffering an ankle sprain

Joe Aribo has given credit to his family for their support during his injury struggle ahead of Rangers’ Uefa Europa League outing against Royal Antwerp on Thursday.

Back in August, the London-born Nigeria star damaged his ankle against St. Johnstone which ruled him out for two months, and he returned to action in the Old Firm derby with the Gers securing a 2-0 win over Celtic on October 17.

Aribo has been in fine goalscoring form recently which has seen him score in his last two matches for Steven Gerrard’s team.

He scored the opening goal in Rangers’ 4-3 win over Royal Antwerp in the first-leg of their Europa League fixture last Thursday and he followed it up with a beauty in their 4-1 league triumph over Dundee United on Sunday.

Ahead of Antwerp’s trip to Ibrox Stadium on Thursday, Aribo – who has scored seven goals in all competitions this season – recalled his experience on the sidelines and the atmosphere in Rangers camp.

“The occasion is great, we get a buzz playing in Europe,” Aribo told media. “It was my first long-term injury and I thought I could come back and get up to speed straight away but it is more of a journey to get to that finish line.

“I spoke to my family a lot during my injury who helped to push me through that difficult time.

“I now know what to expect with any future injuries, the manager also helped as he spoke to me through his experiences with injuries and the patience required.

“The boys are in high spirits but we take it a game at a time and we are purely focused on the next match.”

Rangers hold a slim advantage over their Belgian visitors and Gerrard has promised an improved display in a more aggressive way.

He said: “The scoreline sits how it is in terms of the advantage we have but we certainly won't be going in with that mentality - we see this as a fresh game.

“We want to improve on our performance from a defensive point of view and be a lot tighter and alot more difficult to play against.

“We still want to carry a threat and we want to try and score as many goals as we can. We are at home, we are not going to sit and wait, we are going to treat this game in isolation.

“We’ll be really aggressive and bold in how we play because this is our home and we want to show everyone how difficult it is to play against this team when they come to Ibrox.”

'The problem was we lost Lorch' - Orlando Pirates' Zinnbauer on SuperSport United draw

The German mentor lamented Bucs' failure to kill the game off after taking an early lead through Pule

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer rued Thembinkosi Lorch's injury after the Soweto giants were held to a draw by SuperSport United on Wednesday evening.

Pirates winger Vincent Pule's opening goal was cancelled out by his teammate Ben Motshwari, who netted an own goal and ultimately, the PSL match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Buccaneers suffered a blow when one of their key players, Thembinkosi Lorch went down injured and he was replaced by Azola Tshobeni 28 minutes into the game.

"First half was good. The problem was we lost Lorch, but we come in the game and we scored but in the second half the first 15 minutes we were a little too casual," Zinnbauer told SuperSport TV.

"We started good but then we go a little bit back. The situation with Tyson [Thulani Hlatshwayo]. He comes out for two or three minutes and then we lost a little bit of our structure.

"Then they get the goal and we came back. Good opportunities. I cannot say that my team don't work. They make good work but you see it at the end of the day in the last five minutes two good opportunities to score. But we didn't have the luck that we needed to win the three points."

The 50-year-old tactician was also disappointed to see his side fail to kill the game off having led 1-0 during the half-time break at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

"You have to score earlier. If you get the second goal you finish the game. Then it's easier for us. We had a lot of good transitions for a counter-attack but we are not calm enough," he continued.

"We shoot from 20 metres when we have another option to play in the box and we don't do this and this is the problem when you have to win against a top team in the league.

"The feeling for the second goal. We had a lot of opportunities but we don't score. You cannot win three points when you have chances but don't score."

Zinnbauer explained why he substituted Tshobeni in the 86th minute despite the youngster looking lively for the Buccaneers.

"Azola was injured last week. He had a problem with his ankle. We wanted a new fresh player in," the former Hamburger SV manager explained.

"And [Kabelo] Dlamini is a player that finds a solution in a low block and he can score also. This was the reason for us. But Azola had a good game. Remember he is only 18 years old. He made a very good game."

Pirates will square off with Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

'It is coming' - Mourinho hints at Premier League return for impressive Alli at Spurs

The midfielder led a 4-0 Spurs win and is set to be rewarded for his positive form

Dele Alli's one-goal, two-assist performance in Tottenham's 4-0 Europa League romp on Wednesday convinced Jose Mourinho that he may soon hold a full-time place in the lineup.

Alli, once a Spurs cornerstone under Mauricio Pochettino, had been frozen out of Mourinho's team for much of the campaign and nearly left in January before the manager nixed a deadline loan move.

Given a rare opportunity to play extended minutes against Wolfsberger, Alli delivered an overhead kick to put Tottenham in front before showing the full extent of his passing abilities. Mourinho said afterward that he now sees a clear path toward more frequent playing time for the English footballer.

What did Mourinho say about Alli?

"We had a difficult period, he had an injury and at the same time talk, talk, talk about staying or leaving," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"The market closed, the injury went and he started working with motivation. He is playing very well, I am not saying in this moment we have a starting line-up because of so many matches but it is coming.

"The goal was beautiful but the meaning of the assists and hard work for team means more to me. That work of continuity in the performance is what makes me really happy."

How did Mourinho respond to Tottenham's all-around performance?

"It was good, we got through, won the match like we wanted and no need for the emergency plan," Mourinho added.

"We played well for large periods and all four goals were beautiful. A special night for the kids who played for the first time and no injuries."

One of those "kids" was Dane Scarlett, a 16-year-old forward who assisted Spurs' fourth goal.

"He is a diamond, a kid with incredible potential. He has worked many times with the first team and that gives him a different personality.

"He is still 16, 17 soon and I believe next season he will be a first team squad player because he has a lot of talent. He is going to be a fantastic player and I hope everything around him goes well.

"He is a striker, a No. 9, I have been playing him from the sides similar to Marcus Rashford and he is very clever.

"There is not one player here that I say I am not happy with, the performances were good, are they all going to start on Sunday? No but we are playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday."

What's next for Tottenham?

Spurs have a somewhat congested Premier League schedule over the next two weeks, opening the door for Mourinho to rotate Alli into the lineup. They face Burnley this Sunday, Fulham the following Thursday and Crystal Palace three days after that.

Zungu apologises for Covid-19 rules breach and returns to Rangers first-team training

The 28-year-old has been given a lifeline to revive his career in Scotland after he broke the Scottish government health rules a fortnight ago

Rangers midfielder Bongani Zungu has apologised for breaking coronavirus protocol in Scotland and he has returned to first-team training at the club’s training base in Auchenhowie.

The Premiership giants confirmed on Wednesday that the South Africa international, Nigerian descent Calvin Bassey alongside other suspended first-team players have been recalled.

Zungu was found guilty to have breached strict health restrictions in Scotland after attending a party on the night of February 14.

The 28-year-old who is on a season-long loan from Amiens, admitted his wrongdoing and he is counting on the fans to remain behind the team as Rangers close in on their first league title since 2011.

"I’d like to apologise to the Rangers fans. It’s been a great season so far for the club and my message is that I’d like to apologise,” Zungu was quoted by Herald Scotland.

"I hope the fans can continue to support us and we can put this behind us and focus on the future."

Rangers, however, confirmed the five players were handed strong sanctions which they accepted and showed remorse for their actions.

"Firstly, we recognise that it is a huge honour to represent our club and the Rangers fanbase across the world,” the club statement read.

"Over the course of the last week, we have both ensured that all our players understand our expectations when you are part of this great club.

"The players involved have been left in no uncertain terms as to the standards that everyone here is expected to adhere to. It has been an extremely difficult week for those players following their admission of an error of judgement whilst dealing with the consequences of their actions.

"Our internal discussions were supported by the immediate honesty shown by the players and an appreciation they fell well below the standards we expect at Rangers Football Club, day in and day out. Those standards form the foundation that we have set as a club in order to achieve our targets as a team.

"The first-team squad players have now returned to Auchenhowie. We are both now satisfied that the players completely understand their obligations to our club and accept with sincerity the strong disciplinary sanctions that we have imposed upon them for letting us all down.

"We accept their apologies to the club, their team mates and the fans, for whom we are forever grateful for their resolute support and loyalty."

Earlier on Wednesday, South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki expressed his concern over Bongani Zungu’s situation in Scotland and he disclosed they are in talks with Rangers ahead of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan.

Aribo: Is Rangers midfielder due a big move in 2021?

The midfielder’s body of work this term has left observers wondering whether or not he’s ready to play at a higher level than Scotland

Joe Aribo will probably not register a more fortuitous assist in his career than the one that helped Rangers open the scoring against Dundee United on Sunday.

He’d swerved one way and another, chopped into his left foot and shot at goal, only for the effort to deflect off Ianis Hagi to send the hosts 1-0 up in the 35th minute. Steven Gerrard felt that goal allowed his side to stamp their authority on the game after a leggy start in which Dundee made things awkward and uncomfortable.

After forcing a save from Benjamin Siegrist in that bumpy opening half-hour, Aribo wasn’t to be denied, however, scoring his sixth Scottish Premiership strike just after half-time with a fierce left-footed strike from the inside-left channel that flew beyond the outstretched Siegrist into the far corner.

It was a goal that’ll have made even Gerrard proud and the former England international praised the Nigeria international following the 4-1 win.

“[Aribo] was fantastic today, not just the goal but his running power, his quick feet and the way he outplays people,” the Gers manager remarked after the game. “He is a fantastic kid, you can't get him off the training pitch, he's always working on his game.”

“He decided to come to Rangers to develop and grow and he is certainly moving in the right direction. There's no surprise that he is getting a lot of good performances in his game right now.”

The concluding part of the ex-Liverpool midfielder’s post-match interview was an acknowledgement of the great strides made since the 24-year-old moved from Charlton Athletic in 2019.

Forming part of the Rangers side that’s likely to topple Celtic domestically is the greatest compliment to the West African who’s primed to win the Glasgow side their first title since 2011 (they are 18 points ahead of their managerless rivals with eight games to play).

Despite missing almost two months of the season, the Super Eagle is the fifth-highest top scorer in the side and ranks one place lower for total goal contributions. Even more impressive is the fact he sits 12th in the entire league for goals and assists per 90 and rises to eighth spot in the whole competition when penalties are excluded.

All six Aribo goals have come inside the box but the finishes and type of goal have varied considerably. He’s by no means alien to spectacular efforts, having curled one in from an acute angle in January after beating two Ross County players with his movement, while there was a simple tap in against Livingston after holding his position at the far post with everyone drawn to the ball.

His opening strike of the season was a header from a set-piece vs St Johnstone and the Nigerian’s second in the 8-0 annihilation of Hamilton came about after a delayed run into the box.

Indeed, there’s been something peculiar about each strike this term but many of them have demonstrated the guile in possession and improving movement to sniff opportunities and position himself in the area accordingly.

While accidental assists aren’t quite unusual for Aribo — case in point: the inadvertent assists on Sunday and his first of the season vs Motherwell which ricocheted off him into Kemar Roofe’s path in the 3-1 win — the through ball to set up Glen Kamara against St Johnstone in December showed he has an eye for the killer pass and the subtle flick into Alfredo Morelos’ path for the only goal away at Hibernian in late January highlighted his dexterity.

For players with 10 appearances or more, the 24-year-old ranks 11th for accurate passes into the final third per 90 but drops to 26th for key passes per 90, perhaps suggesting he could do more with fashioning out shooting openings for teammates.

Just how this season’s numbers translate into a more competitive league remains to be seen but there’s reason to feel a drop in output is likely given he may not sign for a side as dominant as Rangers, who average 67.2 percent possession this term.

Having played top flight football for less than two seasons, there’s a sense that, despite being 24, Aribo is still relatively inexperienced at this level and probably needs another season at least under the Liverpool legend, especially as a Champions League campaign could be a possibility next season.

Whenever he eventually moves, there’ll be an adjustment period, particularly if he joins a side that generally operates without the ball. With the current upward trajectory, the Nigerian shouldn't be short on admirers when he eventually decides to leave Gerrard’s champions-elect.

Hildah Magaia: Banyana Banyana striker signs for Moron

The 25-year-old joined the swelling list of South African players abroad after completing her move to the Swedish side

Swedish Elitettan side Moron BK has sealed the signing of South Africa forward Hildah Magaia, on a two-year deal.

Magaia completed her prolonged maiden professional switch to Sweden after passing her medicals and putting pen to paper.

The move brought to an end the 25-year-old's journey with South African National Women's League outfit Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where she gained her career breakthrough.

At TUT, she starred in the 2019 FISU World University Games in Napoli and also contributed 36 goals to help her team finish runners up in the 2019-20 South African top-flight season.

Her form won her the SNWL Player of the Season and earned her a Banyana call-up, which she helped to a seventh Cosafa Women's Cup triumph and got named the Player of the Tournament.

With her exploits, head coach Patrik Nilsson sanctioned her signing as he seeks to boost his attacking ranks ahead of their new campaign for top-flight promotion in the 2021 Elitettan season.

The 2020 Safa NWL's Player of the Year winner will be hoping to make a bright start to life in Sweden when she launches her professional career in the colours of Moron.

Commenting on her switch, Magaia described to a Swedish newspaper that joining Moron was "a fantastic opportunity".

With her arrival in Sweden, she now becomes the second Banyana Banyana star currently plying their trade in the European country after Linda Motlhalo arrived at Djurgardens in 2019.

Having settled in well at Skogsvallen IP,  she is likely to make her unofficial professional debut against Pitea on Sunday.

USWNT stars Horan and Dunn sign three-year contracts with NWSL side Portland Thorns

The midfielders, currently on international duty at the SheBelieves Cup, have each received three-year contracts

Midfielders Lindsey Horan and Crystal Dunn, both currently competing for the U.S. women's national team in the SheBelieves Cup, have signed three-year contracts with the Portland Thorns.

Both Horan and Dunn are former MVPs of the NWSL and should be integral to the Thorns' ambitions, just as they are for their country on the international stage.

They will join the club's preseason camp after the SheBelieves Cup, which concludes Wednesday night for the USWNT against Argentina.

What did the Thorns say about the signings?

“Lindsey and Crystal are key pillars to our future,” Thorns coach Mark Parsons told the club's website.

“Their role on and off the field is crucial to our identity and the collective goals of the club. I am inspired by their dedication to the team and our vision to take this important step forward as a club.”

General manager Gavin Wilkinson added: “Having the ability to sign two of the top players in the game to contracts with Thorns FC is an important move for our club that highlights our commitment as well as the growth of the NWSL in the global soccer landscape."

Where have Dunn and Horan been playing?

Horan is about to enter her sixth season with the Thorns, having joined the club in 2016. One of the top players in the NWSL in recent seasons, Horan earned NWSL Best XI honors in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Dunn, meanwhile, has starred for the North Carolina Courage in the past three seasons, and was acquired by Portland in a trade last fall.

The bigger picture

Both contracts are into six-figures and include NWSL allocation money, according to The Athletic, representing a new pay structure for the league that could help it retain top talent.

NWSL teams can purchase up to $400,000 of allocation money from the league that enables them to pay individuals not being contracted by the USWNT beyond what the normal salary cap would allow.

Because Horan and Dunn turned down their traditional USWNT allocated contracts, the Thorns were able to dip into those allocation funds and provide the multi-year security and salary that comes with it.
