Mamelodi Sundowns request date change for Caf Champions League clash against CR Belouizdad

The Brazilians continue to push for the adjustment of their fixtures and they have Safa and the PSL’s blessing

Mamelodi Sundowns have approached Caf to have their already rescheduled Champions League Group B match against CR Belouizdad moved from Sunday to Saturday.

The Tshwane giants are pencilled in to meet the Algerian side in Dar es Salaam on Sunday before they travel to Stellenbosch for Tuesday's Premier Soccer League date.

Due to the closeness of those fixtures being incompatible with their travel arrangements, Sundowns want the Champions League clash to be pushed back to Saturday.

The PSL has followed Safa’s stance in throwing their weight behind the Brazilians, with the league's acting chief executive officer Mato Madlala saying they will make the club comfortable with its fixture programe.

“Sundowns are still talking to the Confederation of African Football about arranging their game to be played on Saturday‚” Madlala told Times Live.

“That brings a different dimension to their games because they have a game on Tuesday against Stellenbosch. Sundowns were supposed to play on Sunday against Belouizdad but Tanzania does not always have times in which they have flights.

“They don’t fly every day‚ so there are a lot of logistical matters being sorted out. It’s not a clear case of yes or no [on the postponement]‚ starting with the club trying to change the date.

“We support Sundowns in wanting to change their Caf match to Saturday because that will help us find dates for them to catch up on their PSL fixtures. Sundowns were supposed to play Maritzburg [on Wednesday]‚ there is this Stellenbosch game and there’s a Swallows game after that.”

The match against Belouizdad was initially planned for Tuesday but Downs were barred from travelling to Algiers by Algerian authorities due to coronavirus restrictions.

That forced Caf to move the match to neutral Tanzania on Sunday.

On the Saturday they want to meet Belouizdad, the Brazilians had been scheduled to play Polokwane City in a Nedbank Cup Last-16 match.

The PSL says they have no problem with postponing the Nedbank Cup fixture.

“We’re giving Sundowns time to see whether they’ll succeed [with request to Caf],” said Madlala.

“As the PSL we don’t have any issues with postponing their match against Polokwane and we’re constantly talking to Sundowns. If they must play a Caf game they must play. If the club says ‘wait for us, this is what we’re still discussing’, we have to wait because when we postpone we must then fixture again.”

After meeting Stellenbosch on Tuesday, Downs then fly to DRC to meet Tout Puissant Mazembe three days later before returning to South Africa for another away match against Swallows FC.

Real Madrid's Champions League & European Cup wins: Record & full list of titles

All the details about Los Blancos' competition victories, including the years they won and the opponents they beat

Real Madrid have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the Champions League ever since the tournament launched as the European Champion Clubs' Cup in the 1950s.

Legends have been born and records have been broken, with the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano, Raul and Cristiano Ronaldo conjuring up memorable moments for Madridistas over the years.

So, how many times have they actually won the competition? Goal brings you the full list of titles and more.

On this page

How many Champions Leagues have Real Madrid won? Were Real Madrid allowed to keep the Champions League trophy? Which teams have won the most Champions Leagues? What other European titles have Real Madrid won?

How many European Cups & Champions League have Real Madrid won?

Real Madrid have won the European Cup (now Champions League) on 13 occasions, making the Spanish giants the most successful team in the competition's history.

Their first-ever European Cup triumph came in the 1955-56 season and it was the beginning of a record run whereby they won the tournament for five seasons in a row.

Having been the dominant force in European football during the 1950s, and to a lesser extent in the 1960s, Madrid had to wait until the late-1990s before they were once again at the top.

They had to wait a remarkable 32 years before they could get their hands on the Champions League crown, finally ending the drought in 1998 under the guidance of Jupp Heynckes.

Carlo Ancelotti famously delivered 'La Decima' - Real Madrid's 10th Champions League title - in 2013-14 before Zinedine Zidane led them to three Champions Leagues in a row from 2015-16 to 2017-18.

You can see the full list of Real Madrid's European Cup and Champions League wins in the table below.

Title Year Final Manager
1 1955-56 Real Madrid 4-3 Reims Jose Villalonga Llorente
2 1956-57 Real Madrid 2-0 Fiorentina Jose Villalonga Llorente
3 1957-58 Real Madrid 3-2 AC Milan (AET) Luis Carniglia
4 1958-59 Real Madrid 2-0 Reims Luis Carniglia
5 1959-60 Real Madrid 7-3 Eintracht Frankfurt Miguel Munoz
6 1965-66 Real Madrid 2-1 Partizan Miguel Munoz
7 1997-98 Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus Jupp Heynckes

11 2015-16 Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid (5-3P) Zinedine Zidane
12 2016-17 Real Madrid 4-1 Juventus Zinedine Zidane
13 2017-18 Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool Zinedine Zidane

Key: * 'La Decima' | AET - after extra time | P - game won on penalties.

In 2018, Zidane became the first and only Real Madrid head coach to win three Champions Leagues, doing what could not be achieved by iconic figures such as Vicente Del Bosque and Miguel Munoz.

As well as their 13 successful final appearances, the club have competed in three further finals - coming out on the losing side in 1962 (against Benfica), 1964 (against Inter) and 1981 (against Liverpool).

The closest team to Real Madrid in terms of success in the Champions League is AC Milan, with seven titles, followed by Bayern Munich and Liverpool, with six titles each.

Madrid's perennial Clasico rivals Barcelona lag well behind with five Champions Leagues in their trophy cabinet, though they have enjoyed similar levels of success in the post-1992 'Champions League era'.

Were Real Madrid allowed to keep the Champions League trophy?

Real Madrid have a genuine version of the Champions League trophy thanks to an old rule that was in place which allowed teams to keep the silverware if they won it five times in total or three times in a row.

An exclusive club of teams has won the trophy for themselves, with Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Liverpool and AC Milan joining Los Blancos.

The rule was scrapped from 2009 on and nowadays clubs are rewarded with a replica trophy, with UEFA keeping the original.

What other European titles have Real Madrid won?

While the European Cup / Champions League has been Real Madrid's favoured competition, they have also collected a few other European titles over the years.

Los Blancos have been crowned UEFA Cup (forerunner to the Europa League) champions on two occasions - in successive seasons in the mid-1980s.

They won the 1985 UEFA Cup final against Hungarian side Videoton with a 3-1 aggregate victory and then beat German outfit Koln in the 1986 final, emerging with a 5-3 aggregate win.

In addition to the UEFA Cup and Champions League, Real Madrid have also won the UEFA Super Cup - the meeting between Champions League and Europa League winners, founded in the 1970s - four times.

'They are not supporters' - Arsenal star Xhaka wants to meet online abusers 'eye to eye'

The Gunners midfielder has hit out at the abuse he and his family have received on social media and has called for change

Granit Xhaka does not view Arsenal fans who send him online abuse as genuine supporters and says he would love to sit down with them ‘eye to eye’ and ask them why they write what they do.

The Switzerland international has had a checkered relationship with supporters since his move to north London in 2016 and it spilled over last year when he was jeered off the pitch having been substituted by former boss Unai Emery.

Xhaka reacted badly to the jeers and gestured angrily at the fans, telling them to ‘f*ck off’ . He was subsequently stripped of the captaincy by Emery due to his reaction and looked certain to leave the club.

He was convinced to stay by Mikel Arteta, however, after he replaced Emery last year and has become an integral part of the Spaniard’s plans in the heart of the midfield.

But he still gets targeted by abuse online and, ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League tie against Benfica , Xhaka opened up on exactly how it makes him feel - especially when online social media accounts target his family, as well as him.

What did Xhaka say?

When asked about the online abuse he has received, Xhaka said: “If I showed others what they write, I think I have to close my social media, everyone has to close social media.

“I say that before and I will say that now and in the future as well, it is only about me. I am the guy who is on the pitch. It is not my wife, it is not my little one, it is not my family.

“So if you want to criticise someone, no problem to criticise me like a person, like a player. But don’t make the other people involved because they have nothing to do with my job.

“They are not supporters of my club. I do not see them as supporters of my club – to support the club they have to be here if we lose, we draw or we win.

“Of course, you can criticise and say what you want about football – but not about the person, not about the family. I think this is two pairs of shoes, about the footballer and the person.

“But if one guy is a ticket holder at the club and speaks like this about his own players I don't think he needs respect from our side or other people.”

What more has Xhaka said?

Xhaka says the issue of online abuse is always exasperated by a defeat.

And the Gunners midfielder admits he would like nothing more than to get the opportunity to sit down in person with those targeting him and his family to ask them why they feel the need to be so hateful.

“The problem is only if you lose, then it is a problem,” he said. “It is not a problem when you win. If you lose, everyone hates you, everyone is writing you things like…it is not possible to understand how they can write something like this you know.

“I wish I could meet the people who write me these things, sit with them eye to eye and to ask them, why are you writing things like this?

“Not only for me personally, because it happens a lot in the last few weeks, but only to know what he is feeling in this moment when he writes things like this.

“This is not acceptable. So you have to open our eyes and to look after this a lot, because I think you kill football like this if the people start to speak about a player or their families or things like this.”

Support from Arsenal

While discussing the problem of online abuse, Xhaka was quick to praise the support he has received from Arsenal over the issue.

“I have a lot of help from the club because this is something we have to speak very openly about,” he said. “You don’t have to be quiet and say: ‘Yeah, I keep it with me’, because it is not always easy.

“But the club was here for me, for my family. They helped me, I was very open with the guys here and if you have people around you, who help you, it is very, very important.”

Happy to be playing without fans?

Despite some of the issues he has faced with the Arsenal fans during the past two seasons, Xhaka is adamant that he wants them back inside stadiums as soon as possible.

“I’m not a guy who is scared or afraid to play in front of our fans – never, ever,” he said.

“I love the club and I respect the people around the team as well. I wish we could play with the fans because they would push us more and more and more.

“But the situation is what it is and hopefully things will change as quickly as possible to have the fans back and work together, to see we are improving and we want to take the next step as a club – this is what I wish.”

Kaizer Chiefs did enough to beat Horoya AC - Hunt

Amakhosi started their group stage campaign by sharing the spoils but their tactician feels they deserved maximum points

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt says their effort in the 0-0 draw against Horoya AC in Tuesday’s Caf Champions League Group C match could have turned the contest into a victory.

After their maiden participation at this stage of the competition was delayed when they failed to travel to Morocco to face Wydad Casablanca, Chiefs finally kicked of their campaign in this pool.

Although Hunt was not entirely pleased with his side’s showing, he feels they did enough to collect three points on Tuesday.

The Soweto giants thought they had taken the lead twice in the second half but Samir Nurkovic’s efforts were ruled out for offside.

“Just a bit disappointed with the result. I thought we did enough to win the game‚ but it didn’t happen‚” said Hunt as per Sowetan Live.

“That’s how it goes in football. And the ones who survive are the stronger ones. As long as we create the opportunities... and maybe in the first half we didn’t create enough‚ where I think our final ball was not good enough.

“But once we got the synergy a bit better‚ we wanted to get the midfield players wide – because we don’t really have wide players‚ and we wanted to get the central players in those areas – then it was much better in the second half.

“The plan from the start was to try and do that but it’s not a natural thing for some players.”

Amakhosi are now third in their group after basement side Petro Atletico were edged 1-0 by Wydad Casablanca at home to record a second defeat following a 2-0 defeat by Horoya in their opening match.

But Chiefs' result saw them failing to win in their last four matches across all competitions, all played at home.

They have managed to score just three goals in those matches, while conceding five times.

As they now appear jinxed at FNB Stadium, Hunt acknowledges that they are a better side when playing away from home.

“Sometimes it’s going to take a ball to ricochet off somebody for us to score,” Hunt continued.

“Especially here [at FNB]. We are really struggling here. Away from home we are much better. It was right. Once we got them into better side areas you’re going to get better service‚ which happened.”

It is now to be seen how they will perform away from home when they take on Wydad Casablanca in their next match rescheduled for Sunday, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Afcon U20: Kihwelo praises Morocco, Ghana & Gambia after Tanzania exit

The Ngorongoro Heroes left the competition with just a point but the tactician states the lessons learnt will be key in future

Tanzania national U20 head coach Jamhuri Kihwelo has praised the standard of their African Cup of Nations Group C opponents.

The Ngorongoro Heroes were unable to progress to the knockout stage after a 4-0 loss to Ghana and Morocco and a 1-1 draw against Gambia.

After the Gambia draw, Tanzania needed to outsmart the Moroccon side in order to maintain their ambitions of progressing but they ended up losing big.

Kihwelo, who has come under criticism for the team's performances in Mauritania, has stated the rivals were good and his boys must have learnt a lot from participating in the junior tournament.

"Though we are out of the competition, we have learnt a lot of things which will help them shine in their careers. We faced good teams with quality players," Kihwelo said as per Daily News.

"They [opponents] surely got good training from the beginning and that is why they usually have high standards of play. For us, it was another opportunity to learn what others do so that next time, we should not be new in the competition."

After the Gambia draw, Kihwelo had praised his players although he stated they were to blame themselves for not utilising the opportunities. The East Africans managed just a point from the draw.

"We lost like five chances in a game that we were destined to win," he said.

"Three chances were stopped by the Gambia goalkeeper and two were saved by their defenders in the first half. In the second half, we also lost a number of chances but at the end of the day, my boys fought hard and did not allow themselves to come out as losers."

Kihwelo's side were eliminated just after their senior brothers were knocked out of the African Nations Championship in Cameroon at the preliminary round. The exit led to changes being made by sacking head coach Etienne Ndayiragijje by the Tanzanian Football Federation.

Gambia and Morocco progressed to the knockout phase after emerging the top two teams in Group C, with four and seven points, respectively. Ghana managed a place in the last eight as one of the two best third-placed teams although they had lost to Gambia on the last day of the group phase.

The elimination of the Ngorongoro Heroes means it is only Uganda that will represent the Cecafa region in the later stages of the junior competition.

The Hippos will face Burkina Faso, who had topped Group B with seven points. Uganda, who are debuting in the competition, emerged the second-best team in Group A after victories against Mauritania and Mozambique as they only lost to Cameroon.

Ghana and Cameroon will clash in quarter-final one before the Uganda vs Burkina Faso encounter and both matches will be played on Thursday.

On Friday, Morocco and Tunisia will meet in Nouadhibou before a game between the Central Africa Republic and Gambia.

'Only people that don't know Pogba say he doesn't care!' - Man Utd star is a 'really hard worker', says Bailly

The Ivorian has rejected any suggestion that his team-mate is often guilty of "not concentrating or fixing on what he needs to do"

Paul Pogba is a "really hard worker", according to Eric Bailly, who insists that only people that don't know that Manchester United star say he doesn't care about the club.

Pogba has been the subject of constant criticism throughout his second spell at Old Trafford, with it suggested that the Frenchman doesn't give his all to the Red Devils' cause amid his struggles for form and fitness.

The 27-year-old has also done little to silence rumours of a potential move away from Manchester, amid reported interest from Real Madrid and his former club Juventus, but Bailly has now come out to defend his team-mate's attitude.

What was said?

"Paul Pogba is always happy, he portrays one image, and if you don't know him you'd say that this guy doesn't care, he's not concentrating or fixing on what he needs to do," Bailly told European football journalist Guillem Balague's official YouTube channel. "But he's not like that at all.

"He's very professional and works really hard. People look and say he doesn't care, but that's just not true for me. You've got to know him to really see what type of person he is.

"Above everything, he is a really hard worker, a professional player."

Pogba's record at Man Utd

Pogba only made three first-team appearances during his first stint with the Red Devils before he left for Juventus in 2012.

The World Cup winner emerged as one of the top midfielders in Europe during his four-year stay at the Allianz Stadium before United paid a then-world record transfer fee of £89 million ($126m) to bring him back to Old Trafford.

Pogba has since taken his tally of appearances for the club to 192 across all competitions, recording 36 goals and 36 assists along the way.

The France international has also picked up Europa League and League Cup winners' medals, but hasn't yet come close to helping the club end their wait for Premier League or Champions League glory.

How has Pogba performed this season?

An ankle issue and a bout of coronavirus saw Pogba miss a month of action in the first half of the 2020-21 campaign, but he returned at the end of November and began showing exactly why United invested so much money in his talents back in 2016.

He scored spectacular winning goals against Fulham and Burnley as the Red Devils rose to the Premier League summit in early January, combining well with Bruno Fernandes in the final third while also helping to break up play in the middle of the park.

However, Pogba has been absent since limping out of a 3-3 draw with Everton on February 6, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer subsequently revealing that the playmaker will spend at least another "few weeks" on the sidelines.

Mane: It's over for Liverpool in the Premier League, Champions League is our main target

Thirty years of hurt was brought to an end last season but the attacker feels that claiming back-to-back top-tier titles is now out of reach

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has conceded the Premier League title, stating that the points difference between the Reds and table-toppers Manchester City is simply too large to overcome.

Mane helped Liverpool to their first top-flight title in 30 years when the Anfield outfit lifted the trophy at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, but a season ravaged by injuries and poor form has seen the club drop to sixth in the table.

The Senegal international insists that he and his team-mates will not give up the fight and continue to give their all for the cause, but admits that retaining their Premier League title is likely a bridge too far.

What was said?

“First of all, before the end of the season I think, not only me, but every single player in the squad has targets. It's the same for the club,” Mane said in an interview with ESPN Brazil.

“Our target from the beginning was [winning] the Champions League, the Premier League and also cup games. And now, I can say it's over for the Premier League … it's too much.

“In our head, our self-belief, it's always 'never give up', and we won't give up, but for sure, Manchester [City] are a good team and they're flying.”

What is Liverpool's target now?

With the Premier League title all but lost, Mane says that the club's main focus is now on wrestling back the Champions League title from current holders Bayern Munich and securing top-tier European football for 2021-22.

“Beyond the top four is now, right now, our main target. But the Champions League, that is our main, main, main target. To win it, not be second, but it won't be easy,” the 28-year-old went on.

“You're going to face the best teams in Europe, but we're here to beat the best in the world. We'll do everything possible to go forward and win the Champions League.”

What's next for Liverpool?

Having lost four out of their last five encounters across all competitions, including a landmark defeat at home to cross-town rivals Everton, Liverpool next face a struggling Sheffield United side in the Premier League before taking in a home date with fellow top-four hopefuls Chelsea.

Arsenal team news: Gunners wait on Partey fitness test ahead of crucial Benfica clash

Mikel Arteta will make a late decision on his star midfielder ahead of Thursday night's clash in the Europa League

Thomas Partey will have a fitness test on Wednesday as he bids to be available for Arsenal’s crucial Europa League clash with Benfica.

The midfielder has not featured since limping off against Aston Villa with a hamstring injury earlier this month and has missed the last three games in all competitions.

But he returned to full training on Monday and could fly out to Athens for the second leg of the last-32 tie, providing he gets the all clear from the medical staff.

What's been said?

While speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Benfica, Arteta gave an update on the fitness of the Ghana international.

The Arsenal boss said: "Thomas is very close. He has got a final test today (Wednesday) in training and if he is feeling good, he will be available to play the match."

The Goal View | Charles Watts | Arsenal correspondent

As big as Thursday night’s game is for Arsenal, they can’t afford to take any risks with Thomas Partey.

He has come back twice now from the initial thigh injury he sustained in November, but both times he has broken down again and been forced to sit our large chunks of the season.

Since signing last summer Partey has started just 10 games in all competitions, that is simply not enough and Arsenal have missed him badly.

Arteta needs him in his midfield so when he comes back this time, Arsenal have to be sure he is fully fit and there is no danger of him suffering yet another relapse.

What other team news is there?

Rob Holding will not be available for Arsenal on Thursday night.

The centre-back was forced off against Manchester City at the weekend after suffering a head injury late on in the game.

Arsenal used the new concussion substitute rule at the time and now need to follow strict protocols before the defender can return.

"Regarding Rob, he is not available," said Arteta. "He had a concussion.

"We used that [substitution]. He is completely fine, but obviously now we need to follow the protocols and he won’t be able to travel."

What's the expected line-up against Benfica?

Even if Partey is passed fit for Thursday night’s game it’s unlikely that he will start.

Providing there are no other late injury set-backs, then we could see just one change from the team that started the first leg, with Kieran Tierney coming in for Cedric Soares at left-back.

Bristol City’s Downing hails Diedhiou and Wells partnership

The Senegal international and the 30-year-old midfielder have been praised for their fine combination at Riverside Stadium

Bristol City assistant manager Keith Downing has hailed the productive partnership between Famara Diedhiou and Nahki Wells following their 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

The Senegal international and the 30-year-old forged a good understanding against the Boro to help the Robins end their six-game losing run at Riverside Stadium.

Diedhiou opened the scoring in the encounter with a fine header before he was set up by Wells to double his side’s lead.

The Senegal forward then turned provider when he found Wells with a fine pass shortly before the end of the first half and the midfielder swiftly tucked home his effort from close range.

Downing was in charge of the side as newly-appointed manager Nigel Pearson watched the game from the stands, and has showered encomium on the duo for their impressive understanding.

“I thought we were worthy winners today and our football was really good, particularly in the first half and we scored some real quality goals,” Downing told the club website.

"We put two up front today and Nahki and Famara were excellent, they played very well with each other and caused problems on the counter-attack.

“They showed composure with a good header and side-foot from Famara and then Nahki taking it round the keeper. We want more from them but it shows they have the ability to go and do it."

The victory moved the  Ashton Gate outfit to the 12th spot on the Championship table after gathering 42 points from 32 games.

Diedhiou has now scored 10 goals and provided one assist in 34 appearances across all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign.

The forward will be expected to continue his productive partnership with Wells when Bristol City take on Swansea City in their next Championship game on Saturday.

Diedhiou has been with the Robins since the summer of 2017 when he joined the side from French club Angers.

The 28-year-old forward has made more than 145 appearances across all competitions for the Ashton Gate outfit since his arrival.

Diedhiou will hope to maintain his fine club performances to enjoy regular call-up to the Senegal national team, having only made 10 appearances for the West African side since his debut in 2014.

Big League, Women's Premier League kick-offs get Fufa nod

The lower competitions are set to join the top-tier which started in November but took a break from December to February

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has authorised the beginning of the remaining leagues.

The Ugandan Premier League started in December 2020 while the lower competitions were put on hold for a while. The delay was occasioned by the need to have adequate preparations that would adhere to the coronavirus safety protocols.

"The Fufa Executive has authorised the kickoff of the Fufa Second Division League [the StarTimes Big League), Fufa Women Super League, Fufa Women Elite League, the Stanbic Uganda Cup and The Fufa Drum," the federation announced.

"In compliance with the government of Uganda directives and guidelines on Covid-19 pandemic, the Caf & Fifa Covid-19 protocols, as well as the Fufa Covid-19 regulations Fufa will issue comprehensive guidelines to be adhered to by the respective competitions entities to safeguard the health of all the stakeholders involved."

The federation stated further guidelines concerning the resumption of the remaining competitions will be announced when the coronavirus issue improves.

"The Fufa competitions directorate and the Fufa drum committee will soon release the schedule of events and formats to be followed during the respective Competitions," the statement added.

"Fufa wishes to call upon all stakeholders to understand the sporting spirit behind the delayed kick-off of these competitions and appreciate any format changes that may be suggested in this regard."

The Premier League is about to conclude its matchday nine actions with more games set to be played on Wednesday.

Reigning champions Vipers SC are at the top with 21 games while Express FC are second with 19 points. Police FC are third with 16 while Sports Club Villa, URA FC, and Onduparaka FC are fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, all on 15 points.

Struggling debutants Kitara FC and Malaba Youth Sports Association FC are at the bottom as their search for maiden wins in the top-flight continues.

The league had to take a break from late December until February 12 so as to give the national team ample time to participate in the African Nations Championship in Cameroon.

Uganda did not do well in the competition specifically meant for players doing their trade in their domestic national competitions as they were eliminated in the group stage after defeats to Togo and Morocco and a draw against Rwanda.

Other national sides in continental duties namely the U20 and the U17 were also allowed to resume preparations before.

The U20 have already progressed into the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations where they are set to meet Burkina Faso in Mauritania.

The U17 Afcon will start in March in Morocco.

Caf Champions League: Weather was not friendly for Al Ahly vs Simba SC – Mosimane

The South African tactician now says his players were troubled to play under the scorching heat in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday

Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has blamed the weather for the outcome of their Caf Champions League match against Simba SC on Tuesday.

The African champions suffered a 1-0 defeat in their second Group A match at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in a match that2 was attended by 30,000 fans.

Mozambican winger Luis Miquissone powered home the all-important goal in the 31st minute, exchanging a one-two pass with midfielder Clatous Chama before unleashing a right-footed effort that sizzled past Al Ahly keeper Mohamed El Shenawy and into the roof of the net.

The South African tactician has now said they tried their best to win the match but the weather conditions were not favourable for them as they are not used to playing matches at that time.

“We were trying to figure out how to go with our opponents and we knew this from the beginning which made us increase our efforts on the field,” Mosimane told reporters after the game.

“For what happened they [Simba] should be commended but we did not lose out because of tactics it was the weather that was not friendly to us.

“The evening time for us is not friendly so we worked very hard to get the best result, but to be honest the environment was not friendly to us, we still have work ahead and we still have matches so we have not given up.”

In a separate interview, Mosimane explained his unhappiness at the Caf decision to allow fans to attend the Group A fixture, saying whatever happened in the game has never happened in any place in the world.

“We have to be professional after any loss, but the game could be held in better circumstances,” Mosimane told the club’s official website.

“I am a professional coach and I have no comments on the fans’ attendance as it was Caf’s decision, but what happened today [Tuesday] did not happen in any place in the world.”

The reigning Tanzania Mainland League champions started the game better, denying the Egyptians possession. Their confidence levels were good and the presence of the fans made it even easier.

Miquissone had a real chance in the game after just five minutes when he was slipped into the danger zone by Clatous Chama. However, his touch was heavy, allowing the goalkeeper to make a save.

In the 31st minute, the home-team fans were given something to celebrate as Miquissone was let loose in the 18-yard area and he unleashed an unstoppable shot that hit the crossbar before bouncing in the net.

Simba are now leading the group with a maximum six points while Al Ahly are second on three points, the same as AS Vita Club of the Democratic Republic of the Congo who beat Al Merrikh of Sudan 4-1 in the fixture on Tuesday.

'Police FC's ambitions greater than Onduparaka's' - Mubiru

The league sides, who are only separated by a point, are set to meet on Wednesday as part of matchday nine action

Police FC head coach Abdalla Mubiru has claimed his side are more ambitious than Onduparaka FC ahead of their Wednesday Ugandan Premier League tie at the Omondi Stadium.

Police will face the Caterpillars after they were defeated by Vipers SC in the last game but Mubiru is all confident about his squad's readiness to face Onduparaka and pick up a win.

"The morale is high and the spirit is high within the group despite getting a setback in our previous game, we are aware that there is still a long way to go because this is a marathon and we keep chasing our ambition," Mubiru said as was quoted by Football256.

“We are ready for the game against a team that has picked up great form recently and we are sure they are going to come with confidence after their recent results.

“We know their threat, they are a good team but our ambitions are greater than theirs.”

Yussuf Kasozi, Ben Ocen and Samuel Kayongo as well as Derrick Ochan are the players who are set to miss the tie. Frank 'Zaga' Tumwesigye and Duncan Sseninde are, however, available for the Onduparaka encounter.

“We are still missing a couple of players like Ocen, Kayongo and we are still waiting on the fate of Ochan after his red card which we have appealed against,” the Cranes assistant coach added.

“We are also missing Ssozi after his injury against Vipers but we are happy to welcome back Zaga and Sseninde who return from injury.”

Goalkeeper Ochan was controversially red-carded against Vipers and Police had stated they were to appeal against the decision.

"We shall definitely appeal to tie authorities to rescind the red card because it was never a foul in the first place,” Mubiru said in an earlier interview.

“It is very unfortunate that we had to lose the game after a ridiculous decision against us, but regardless we congratulate the champions Vipers for the victory and the three points."

“I have been able to view footage of the incident that led to the Ochan red card] but there is no way that was a red card," he continued.

“It is rather harsh to Ochan and to his teammates that they had to take such a blow and at the moment that the game was in over a poor and disappointing error by the referees.”

Onduparaka have looked rejuvenated side since they lost to KCCA FC by an 8-0 margin. They have picked up four wins and have drawn twice since then as they remain unbeaten in six games ahead of the Police tie.

Kimanzi: Wazito FC is my new job and will protect it vs Mathare United

The former Harambee Stars tactician says he does not have pressure facing his former employer in a league match

Wazito FC coach Francis Kimanzi has explained he will not be under any pressure when he comes up against his former side Mathare United in an FKF Premier League match on Wednesday.

The former Harambee Stars tactician has handled several clubs in the Kenyan top-flight, Mathare United being one of them, and ahead of their re-union, he has stated he does not feel any pressure coming up against them, and his main task is to protect the new job he has at Wazito.

“I don’t think I have any pressure [facing Mathare United], because now I am in a different team, I have a job with a different team and I have targets with the new team, I only have a different pressure to ensure Wazito get maximum points from the game,” Kimanzi told Wazito online.

On how prepared they are to face the Slum Boys, Kimanzi said: “We have enjoyed good training sessions this week at least even the new players have trained with us and have understood what we want from them and how we want them to play,

“We also got some good break in between which allowed us to give the players some time off and those who had injuries we gave them time to get further treatment during the break and everything looks good.

“What I feel, the team is looking sharp up to now, because we have done something already by keeping balance with the team, keeping the team in the shape they were in before and balancing the rest, we have done that perfectly well.”

On whether they have injury concerns ahead of the fixture, Kimanzi explained: “We had a few players who picked injuries during our last game before the small break, but most of them have come back, it is important to have all our players fit and I am happy we are ready for the task.”

Wazito and Mathare United have met three times in the history of the league with the former winning one game and the other two ending in draws.

During the first-ever meeting in the 2018 season, Wazito beat Mathare United 1-0 with the second round fixture ending in a 3-3 draw.

In the 2019 season, they settled for a 2-2 draw in the first meeting but they could not face off in the other fixture as the league was cancelled owing to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Neil Lennon resigns from Celtic post three days after Ross County defeat

The Hoops are now looking for a new head coach as they trail Rangers by 18 points in the Scottish Premiership table with just eight games to go

Neil Lennon has resigned from his managerial post at Celtic three days after overseeing a damaging defeat at Ross County.

Lennon had been charge of Celtic for two years during what was his second stint in charge of the Hoops, with the 49-year-old having replaced Brendan Rodgers following his move to Leicester City in February 2019.

He has, however, been under pressure for the majority of the season as Celtic have slipped way behind arch-rivals Rangers in the table, and has now decided to leave his post with eight games of the league season remaining.

What's been said?

Lennon has explained his decision to step down via the club's official website , with his assistant manager John Kennedy now taking charge of the team on an interim basis.

"We have experienced a difficult season due to so many factors and, of course, it is very frustrating and disappointing that we have not been able to hit the same heights as we did previously," he said.

"I have worked as hard as ever to try and turn things around, but unfortunately we have not managed to get the kind of run going that we have needed.

"I have always given my best to the club and have been proud to deliver silverware to the Celtic supporters. I will always be a Celtic supporter myself and I will always want the best for Celtic.

"I would like to thank so many people at the club who have given me so much and I would also like to thank my family for their love and support. I wish the Celtic supporters, players, staff and directors nothing but success for the future."

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added on Lennon's departure: "I would like to pay tribute to Neil for all he has done for the club in his second spell, delivering our eighth and ninth successive league titles, the quadruple treble and winning the last five available domestic trophies.

"While this season has not progressed as we would have liked, it cannot diminish the character or integrity of a man who has given the club so much. He will always be part of the fabric of Celtic and someone who will always be welcomed at Celtic Park.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, and personally, I would like to thank Neil for his work as our manager and I wish him and his family good health and continued success in everything they do."

Celtic's decline under Lennon

After delivering a domestic treble in 2019-20, optimism was high at Celtic Park ahead of their latest campaign as Lennon bid to stave off the threat of Steven Gerrard's Rangers for another year.

However, Celtic have already dropped 16 more points than they did at the same stage last term, before they were handed the title due to the coronavirus pandemic, and they currently sit 18 behind the Gers, who are now destined to win the Scottish top-flight crown for the first time in a decade.

In addition to a lack of consistency in terms of results, Lennon also came in for heavy criticism for taking his squad to Dubai for a winter training camp amid the continued restrictions in place to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Lennon, Kennedy and 13 squad members were forced to self-isolate upon their return to Glasgow after Christopher Jullien posted a positive test, which then left Celtic with no choice but to field a weakened team at a crucial stage of the campaign.

What legacy does Lennon leave behind?

Lennon's first stint in the Celtic dugout between 2010 and 2014 saw him guide the club to five trophies, including three successive Scottish Premiership crowns, and he has added another five to his collection since his return.

Indeed, he now has five league titles on his CV, along with four Scottish Cups and one League Cup, and is likely to still be held in high regard by fans once the dust settles on a disastrous 2020-21 campaign.

India national teams get rare and much-needed action amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic

The India women's team concluded their Turkey trip whereas Igor Stimac's men are set to play two friendlies in March...

As the world is limping back to normalcy fighting its way against the Coronavirus pandemic, sports remains on the backburner for most nations. However, footballing action in India has kept rumbling on with the Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League being held simultaneously in Goa and Kolkata respectively.

International football had come to a freezing halt, especially in Asia which had seen no matches held in the entire 2020. But that dismal stat, at least for India, is changing.

Significantly, India's national teams are getting some much-needed action courtesy of the AIFF's (All India Football Federation) proactiveness behind the scenes. The India women's team flew to Turkey to take part in an exposure trip recently where they locked horns against Serbia, Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, the men's team are also set to play a couple of friendlies in March in Dubai.

In their final match of the exposure trip, the Indian eves went down 3-2 against a much-higher ranked Ukraine in Alanya, Turkey, on Tuesday. Maymol Rocky's troops had a brilliant first half, courtesy of goals by Pyari Xaxa and Manisha, but a resilient Ukraine side riding on a hattrick by Daria Apanashchenko made a comeback in the second half to steal the show.

India did not have to wait long to break the deadlock after Pyari Xaxa scored in the 14th minute making the most of a melee in the box. And just past the half-hour mark, Manisha doubled India's lead after she latched on to an exquisite through ball from Sangita Basfore.

It was individual brilliance from Apanashchenko that took the game away from India. Her winner was an audacious chip over goalkeeper Linthoingambi, which had quality written all over it.

After an 8-0 mauling against Russia, the team showed character by putting up an impressive show against a much superior opponent who are currently ranked 24th in the world. The eves were camping in Goa for over a month before they travelled to Turkey and there will be a slew of national camps ahead of the AFC Women's Asian Cup qualifiers later this year.

Although India have already qualified for the marquee event slated to be held in January 2021, courtesy of being the host, there is a strong sentiment amongst the squad members that they are going to give their all to qualify on merit rather than privilege. To ensure that they get prepared in the best possible manner, AIFF are looking to provide them with similar platforms so that they can lock horns against higher-ranked teams.

"We were deeply concerned by the fact that our women's team were out of action for a long time following the pandemic. Just like in the case of the men's team, we were looking out for opportunities where our women's team can play a few matches and that is why we jumped at the opportunity to send them to Turkey. We also wanted them to play higher-ranked nations and get exposure to top-quality football. And the team have done well. It has been a great experience for the team who were without some of the regular players due to injury. The result against Ukraine was very good," told AIFF secretary Kushal Das to Goal.

The federation has also arranged a national camp for the men's team in UAE (United Arab Emirates) from March 15, so that the team gets in shape before taking on Oman and the hosts in two friendlies. It must be noted that Oman and UAE are ranked 81st and 74th in the world which is significantly higher than India (104). Playing against quality opponents will not only help them get better but will be crucial to improve the rankings if they manage to churn out a positive result from these two games.

India will play their remaining World Cup qualifiers in June in Qatar and this camp will be vital for Igor Stimac to formulate a new blueprint for the Blue Tigers as the coach has hinted that there will be many new faces in the squad.

"We also wanted our men's team to get back into competitive action before the World Cup qualifiers and thankfully, we've been able to arrange a couple of friendlies next month," stated Das.

India are currently placed fourth in Group E with three points from five matches. Qatar top the table with 13 points while Oman are hot on their heels with 12. India are virtually out of contention for the top two spots but a third-place finish is well within the reach of the Blue Tigers. That will book them a direct berth in the third round for the 2023 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

India lost narrowly to Oman at home before holding Asian champions Qatar to a goalless draw. The inspiring result was followed by two more draws and a loss against Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Oman respectively.

Eight group winners and four best runners-up will progress to the continent's 12-team final qualifying stage for the 2022 World Cup.

Thomas N’Kono: Africa's greatest legacy in Spain?

The Cameroon legend is about to complete 20 years as a goalkeeping coach at the Spanish side

To speak about Thomas N'Kono is to speak about a footballing legend.

The former Cameroon goalkeeper is currently a part of the RCD Espanyol coaching staff and it just takes one glimpse back at his career to understand the magnitude and influence of his legacy.

For almost 20 years, he played for Cameroon’s national team and he won the Africa Cup of Nations, as well as starring for The Indomitable Lions along with Roger Milla at the 1982 and 1990 World Cups, one of their most memorable periods.

N'Kono won two African Player of the Year awards and was the first goalkeeper to achieve this. At club level, he took RCD Espanyol to the final of the Uefa Cup.

Above all, though, his arrival in LaLiga Santander at the start of the 1980s, as he kept out goal after goal for the Periquitos, is what saw him become a pioneer for African goalkeepers and a source of inspiration for shot-stoppers past, present and future.

That includes Gianluigi Buffon.

In addition to his eight years between the posts for RCD Espanyol, he has now been working for the club for almost 20 years as a goalkeeping coach, sharing his wisdom with all those who have passed through. Even though almost four decades have passed since his arrival in Spain, N'Kono remains one of the best international ambassadors for LaLiga.

Born on July 20th, 1956 in Dizangue, his start in football wasn’t easy.

“I started by playing football on the street,” N’Kono recalled. “There was no youth football there, only holiday tournaments.

“I would play as a goalkeeper or a striker and I would change between the positions. After having one very good game against another town, my brother told me that I should always play as a goalkeeper.

“Back then, I had to walk 25 kilometres on foot from Dizangue to play football in Edea. I didn’t have the means to pay for transport, so either you had a bicycle, or you had ‘the bicycle of your feet’. There was a taxi driver who liked football a lot and he would sometimes take me. As there were some family members there, I stayed with them for a week to be able to train.”

From Edea, he progressed to the point where he was playing in the country’s second division in Douala at just 16 years of age.

Then, after an incredible season, he was signed as a 17-year-old by Canon Yaounde, one of Cameroon’s most successful clubs. That also opened the door to the national team at a time when N’Kono had only just become an adult.

“I was lucky in that the national team coach Vladimir Beara was a former goalkeeper, who taught me a lot about the craft, and that’s how it all started,” he remembered. “With him, I learned something that changed my life.

“I was training one Monday, and he told me that on the Thursday we’d meet up again. I felt a lot of pain in my body and, in the end, I didn’t go. They then kept me out of the national team call-ups for around six months or a year and then, when I did return, it was only to sit on the bench.

”That made me grow a lot, though, because it put my career at risk when I was just 18. It’s about effort, about growing and being the best. From there, everything else came naturally.” Everything else, as N’Kono describes it, was special.

While he combined football with his job at a water company, N'Kono rose to prominence with Canon Yaounde and won five national titles there as well as two Caf Champions Leagues (in 1978 and 1980). There, he also won his two African Player of the Year awards (in 1979 and 1982), a pioneering feat for a goalkeeper, and this was also because of his performances with Cameroon as they qualified for the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

That boosted N’Kono’s reputation on a global level.

It was his country’s first ever appearance at a World Cup and they were one goal away from knocking out eventual champions Italy in the group stages. Across Cameroon’s three matches, N’Kono played brilliantly and conceded just one goal.

The skill he showed during that tournament saw him stay and continue his career in Spain. After receiving offers from Brazilian sides Flamengo and Fluminense, as well as from RCD Espanyol, he accepted the offer from the Catalan club.

It was the first offer he received and, as he promised to his wife, this was the one he said yes to. Even if he didn’t quite realise it at the time, N’Kono was taking a historic step as he was becoming one of the first African goalkeepers to play in Europe.

This was a time when the rules in Spain only allowed for two foreign players in a squad and these were usually used for star attackers.

However, N’Kono repaid RCD Espanyol’s trust in his abilities as he became the foreigner with the most league appearances in RCD Espanyol’s history.

Over 241 LaLiga Santander appearances across eight seasons, N’Kono became an icon for RCD Espanyol thanks to his excellent reflexes, his magnificent athleticism, his strong personality, his leadership and his ability to save penalties.

As an intuitive and creative goalkeeper, he did things that others didn’t dare, like playing as a sweeper and passing the ball out as far as the opposition area, earning his various assists.

He’d even come out for aerial balls with just one hand, and was a player ahead of his time, even standing out for his attire, wearing trousers instead of shorts.

As he has explained: “When I started out, I didn’t have boots or gloves. It wasn’t until Douala that I had my first boots. I spent eight or nine years playing with shorts, but you can imagine how much I scratched my legs when playing on gravel pitches. Eventually, I was able to wear trousers and then I never stopped.”

During his eight seasons at the Estadi de Sarria, the goalkeeper became the foreigner with the most matches in the history of RCD Espanyol (an honour that Mauricio Pochettino later inherited) and he also became the Cameroonian with the most matches in the history of LaLiga Santander (although that tally was later overtaken by Samuel Eto'o).

Yet N’Kono’s career in Spain was about much more than records; he achieved epic victories in the derby against Barcelona, he received a standing ovation at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and helped RCD Espanyol go on a European run by reaching the 1988 Uefa Cup final.

On their way to the final, they knocked out Arrigo Sacchi’s AC Milan (which had players such as Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Alessandro Costacurta and Franco Baresi) and Giovanni Trapattoni’s Internazionale (which boasted the likes of Enzo Scifo, Giuseppe Bergomi, Daniel Passarella and Walter Zenga).

In the first leg of the final, the Periquitos won 3-0 against Bayer Leverkusen at the Estadi de Sarria, but they lost in heart-breaking fashion in the return leg as they fell 3-0 and lost 3-2 on penalties.

After coming so close, it would take another 12 years for RCD Espanyol to win a title and another 19 for them to return to a European final.

During his time at RCD Espanyol, N’Kono continued his prestigious international career with Cameroon, who he played for 112 times in total.

The Indomitable Lions lifted their first ever title by winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984 with N’Kono in goals, known at that time as ‘The Wizard’ after being given a nickname by the legendary coach Helenio Herrera. Then, in 1990 and at the age of 33, the goalkeeper starred as Cameroon returned to the World Cup and as they reached the quarter-finals, which remains their best ever run at the tournament. After defeating Diego Maradona’s Argentina on their way to winning their group, they overcame Colombia in the round of 16 and only a Gary Lineker penalty in extra time prevented them from progressing further.

In that same summer of 1990, N’Kono left RCD Espanyol. However, he stayed in the north-east of Spain to play for Catalan side Sabadell and training for Hospitalet before moving to Bolivia and winning two league championships with Club Bolívar, as well as establishing an unbeaten record, and enjoying stints in Brunei and Indonesia ahead of his retirement in 1996/97, at the age of 39.

It was then that he hung up his gloves as a worldwide footballing legend. But, he didn’t leave goalkeeping behind entirely. Soon, he began his career as a goalkeeping coach.

In 1998, just a year after his retirement, N’Kono was named as the goalkeeping coach for Cameroon’s national team for the 1998 World Cup in France. He was also involved as Cameroon won the Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, with 16-year-old Carlos Kameni – who’d later move to RCD Espanyol – between the posts.

Another of the legend’s disciples from that era was Jacques Songo'o, who won the LaLiga Santander title with Deportivo La Coruna in 1999/2000.

In 2001, the opportunity to return to RCD Espanyol came up as the Cameroonian was hired to work in the Catalan club’s academy.

General director Fernando Molinos and president Daniel Sanchez Llibre were the ones who supported N’Kono and, just a year and a half later, he had been promoted to work with the first team.

As he himself recalled: “Cristobal Parralo was the sporting director at the time and they changed coach, with my former coach Javier Clemente leaving and Luis Fernandez coming in. He wanted to bring a goalkeeping coach from the outside, but they told him that I was there at the club and that I should be the one to come up.” Since then, he has stayed at RCD Espanyol for 20 years!

Last summer, N’Kono took a step to the side to become a technical advisor to new head coach Vicente Moreno and to allow Jesus Salvador the opportunity to become the full-time goalkeeping coach.

“We share all or almost all responsibilities, but now he is the one who fully travels with the team,” N’Kono said of the new setup. Meanwhile, the Cameroonian keeps working with the shot-stoppers at the training ground and has a role with the youngsters of the academy. He also works with teams such as the club’s LaLiga Genuine Santander side.

Asked about his style of coaching, N’Kono has said that: “Goalkeepers who I like to train should dominate three things: the how, the when and the why.”

Over the years, he has coached many players who have gone on to achieve a lot between the posts.

Speaking with a clear reverence for the goalkeepers he has trained, he said: “After all these years, what fills me with the most pride is that we have coached many goalkeepers, such as Gorka Iraizoz, Carlos Kameni, Kiko Casilla, Pau Lopez, Diego Lopez, Cristian Alvarez, Edgar Badia... They’ve all passed through my hands. This means we’ve done a good job.”

During his time in RCD Espanyol’s dugout, N’Kono was able to lift the Copa del Rey in 2006, when Kameni was the No.1.

That is the club’s last piece of silverware and, reflecting on that achievement, the Cameroonian said: “It was a great moment, maybe the best sporting memory in this time.” He came close to European glory again, forming part of the staff as RCD Espanyol lost another Uefa Cup final on penalties, this time to Sevilla FC in 2007.

With such an impressive CV as a player and then as a coach, some might be surprised that no bigger club has ever come to take N’Kono away from RCD Espanyol. However, ‘The Wizard’ has a special connection with his current team, saying: “I have eternal love for RCD Espanyol. The club is like a child to me. There’s a need to look after it so that the club can grow and blossom. That’s what those who have come here and those who are here now want.

“It’s about having a special affection for the colours. Even though the football of nowadays may have lost some of the love for the colours, there are values here that everyone buys into. It’s not all about money.”

These aren’t just words from the coach, as he has put this sentiment into action too by turning down a lucrative offer a few years ago.

As he explained: “I had a proposal from the Aspire Academy in Qatar. It was the most tempting of all those I’ve had, but I didn’t want to leave because of the situation the team was in. I couldn’t be convinced to leave my team during a period of difficulty.”

His loyalty, it appears, is unlikely to be swayed any time soon.

REVEALED: Ex-Governor ‘Sonko’ bailed out Gor Mahia trip to Zambia

Goal can exclusively reveal the ailing Mike Mbuvi gave K’Ogalo a financial boost to make their trip to Lusaka

Gor Mahia's trip to Zambia to play their Caf Confederation Cup fixture against Napsa Stars was on the verge of collapsing until ex-Nairobi governor Mike ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi stepped in to bail them out.

Goal can exclusively reveal the team was on the verge of not honouring the return leg at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka as they did not have money to purchase tickets for the trip.

It is the reason their first attempt to fly out on a Friday collapsed as the club was yet to secure air tickets after the Football Kenya Federation, who had promised to help them, returned negative answers.

Goal has now obtained recorded audio of ‘Sonko’, who is admitted at a Nairobi hospital, speaking to the club’s chairman Ambrose Rachier after he gave the team USD5,000 to secure tickets for the trip.

“I am still admitted at a Nairobi Hospital but was upset to hear my beloved team is stranded and yet to travel to Zambia for the Caf fixture,” ‘Sonko’ told Rachier in the recorded conversation.

“I have been told by one Brian the team is stranded so I have decided to give some little support, at least USD5,000 to make sure the team travels, and I hope the money reached you,” ‘Sonko’ explained to Rachier, who responded by saying he had indeed received the money.

“You know me I am a Gor Mahia fan, and I don’t like seeing the boys suffering or getting stranded anywhere and Brian is a very good friend to me, he is like a brother to me? ‘Sonko further told Rachier.

In his response, Rachier thanked ‘Sonko’ for helping the team, and wished him a quick recovery.

“We appreciate your support and as a club, we are praying for your quick recovery.”

Gor Mahia did not reach the group stage of the competition as they drew the match 2-2 with Napsa Stars qualifying on a 3-2 aggregate win having won the first leg at Nyayo Stadium 1-0.

However, the match did not end well as Gor Mahia players accosted the match referee at the final whistle after he awarded a 94th penalty, which was converted by veteran Emmanuel Mayuka to dump them out of the competition.

K’Ogalo have now shifted their focus to retaining the FKF Premier League title and also the domestic Cup.

Kaze: Yanga SC have changed tactics for remaining league matches

The Burundian tactician now says they have changed their style of play to win the remaining top-flight matches

Yanga SC coach Cedric Kaze has revealed a new approach to help them win the remaining matches in Mainland Premier League.

The Jangwani giants have struggled to win matches since the second round of the league resumed in mid-February but despite posting three straight draws before snatching a win in their last league assignment, they have remained at the top of the 18-team table.

Apart from leading the log, Yanga are also the only unbeaten side in the top-tier after 21 matches.

The team started the second round matches with three consecutive draws – 1-1 against Tanzania Prisons, 1-1 against Mbeya City, and 3-3 draw against Kagera Sugar - before recovering to beat Mtibwa Sugar 1-0 at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The outcome of the matches has forced the Burundian coach to confirm they have changed their style of play heading into the next matches of the league.

“We were not playing badly but what I have done is to try to change the style and see if we can start to win matches comfortably,” Kaze said as quoted by Sokalabongo.

“I have asked my players to believe in themselves, they need not fear anything, they should play without fear, and on top of that they must use the chances that we create, this is our main doing.

“We play very well, we attack very well but we don’t reach the final end, we don’t finish the chances we do create, so I want the players to start using the chances we create and you will see a very big difference in our game plan.

“I am not blaming my players for what we have been going through, they have done a big job, they have fought for the team but that believe in pushing for results is lacking and I want them to have it back, I have talked to them.

“The league is a marathon, we know we are on top of the table, but we must believe in what we want to achieve, we must take our aim and target it, we don’t need to fear anyone, we usually create many chances especially in the first half of our matches but they are not used properly.

“We are on track but let us see the next two or three matches and we will know if the new tact is working, for now, we are ready to play and win our matches.”

Yanga are top on 49 points from 21 matches while Simba SC are second on 42 points from 18 matches and Azam FC are third on 37 points from 21 matches.
