‘Let’s hold on a little’ - Man City striker Aguero responds to Barcelona rumours

The Netherlands star believes his history with Ronald Koeman will help him adapt to his new surroundings

Memphis Depay is convinced he, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero are compatible and can play together at Barcelona.

The Netherlands international joined the Catalan side on a free transfer from Lyon shortly after Aguero made the switch from Manchester City.

The Camp Nou outfit are also expected to retain Messi this summer despite his contract expiring at the end of June.

What has been said?

There have been questions about whether the trio can play in the team at the same time, but Depay is confident they will work it out.

“It would be amazing to play with [Messi]. Hopefully it is possible. He has a number of qualities that the team needs and it would be important to build everything around that," he told Sport.

“There is a lot of talent in the team. It would be great for me to play alongside him and win titles.

“We have many attackers, but all different in my opinion. I have different abilities and strengths than Sergio Aguero, for example, or any other player.

“I think the three of us are compatible and different, but we are going to see how everything happens.”

Depay has faith in Koeman

Depay's move to the Blaugrana has reunited him with former Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

The 27-year-old has hailed the influence the coach has had on him and believes they will work well again together for the Spanish giants.

“[Koeman] has had a great impact on me, in important years,” he said. “He was able to change the Netherlands team, he counted on me, he gave me confidence. Now he has wanted to count on me for this adventure in Barcelona, so he has undoubtedly been a relevant figure.

“I know him and how he trains, so it's easier for me to adapt. I know what he expects of me, we've been working together for a long time. Even with him on the bench it will obviously not be easy at all, but it is clear that it is a good thing. Without him it would have been different.”

LIVE: Leeds vs Chelsea

The Allianz Arena chief is adamant that the Polish frontman will see his current contract through to its 2023 expiry date

Robert Lewandowski will definitely be at Bayern Munich "for another two years", according to club president Herbert Hainer, who has insisted that the Chelsea-linked striker is not for sale.

Lewandowski has been heavily linked with a summer move to Chelsea in recent weeks, with head coach Thomas Tuchel reportedly eager to bring in a new centre forward ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

Goal has reported that the Blues have asked to be kept informed about the 32-year-old's current situation at Allianz Arena, but Hainer has no fear of losing a prized asset before his contract expires in 2023.

What's been said?

When asked to address Chelsea's interest in Lewandowski, the Bayern chief told Goal: “Firstly, in my opinion, Lewandowski is best striker in the world. We are so happy that we have him in our team.

“He still has two more years on his contract. He will definitely play those with Bayern Munch. I said it already a few weeks ago – I could imagine him staying with us for even longer. He will honour his contract.

“He will definitely play the next two seasons here in Bayern Munich.”

Hainer on Haaland links

Erling Haaland has been touted as a possible replacement for Lewandowski as the Poland international edges towards his mid-thirties, but Hainer has also ruled out a swoop for the Borussia Dortmund star at this stage.

Pressed on whether Bayern are lining up Haaland as their next No.9, the club chairman responded: "No. As I said, Robert will definitely be here for the next two seasons with Bayern. Then we will look for a successor.”

How did Lewandowski perform for Bayern last term?

Hainer's stance on Lewandowski is unsurprising given how the experienced frontman is showing no signs of slowing down in terms of his prolific output in the final third.

Lewandowski found the net 48 times in 40 outings for Bayern last term, including 41 in the Bundesliga as they clinched a ninth successive title, beating Gerd Muller's 49-year-old scoring record in the competition in the process.

What else did Hainer say?

Hainer also revealed that Bayern are planning to open contract extension talks with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka this week, with the former having entered the final two years of this deal and the latter being linked with Manchester United now that he is only 12 months away from becoming a free agent.

“As you know, they went on holiday after the European Championship. They were back yesterday in the training sessions,” he said of the duo. “Now we have time to talk to them. And hopefully, within the next week, we will find agreements with them.”

Gerrard ended Rangers' title drought. Can he end their Champions League exile?

The Copper Queens won many hearts despite failing to make it to the quarter-finals after losing to Brazil on Tuesday

Zambia midfielder Rachael Kundananji believes they have sent a warning to the rest of Africa that they are the best on the continent despite their exit from the Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday.

The Copper Queens, who were taking part in the Games for the first time, failed to make it to the quarter-finals after losing 1-0 against Brazil in their final Group F match.

Zambia, led by coach Bruce Mwepu, however, won many hearts despite the exit as they battled to lose 10-3 against Netherlands in the opener and then played out an entertaining 4-4 draw against China in their second match.

The 21-year-old Kundananji, who was among the star players for Zambia and also scored in the game against China, believes they will now be a force to be reckoned with in major tournaments on the African continent.

“We just want to go to the Awcon and come back with a cup, we have to show them that we are best. We are not losers; we were here [at the Olympics] because we were champions,” Kundananji told Zambia FA media.

“We gained experience. As you can see, we were playing against experienced players, the teams we played against have been together for so many years and they have played at big tournaments.

“It is a great achievement for us. We have improved in defending, attack, and [have been] working together as a team.”

Kundananji, who features for BIIK Kazygurt in Kazakhstan, is confident the Copper Queens will make a second appearance in the Olympic Games next edition.

“Why not? As you can see, we are all young, we are going to qualify to the next Olympics,” continued Kundananji.

The team’s performance in Tokyo also caught the eye of the country's President Edgar Lungu, who hailed their resilience during the games saying they can take many positives and adding he was proud of what they had achieved.

“It was a great performance at the Olympics by our Copper Queens and despite bowing out of the tournament, there are many positives to pick from the young ladies,” Lungu said.

"One word that describes their performance today [Tuesday] is resilience. Despite the red card and a nasty injury to our goalkeeper, the girls remained resilient against a strong opponent. You are the quintessence of hard work, which is the true Zambian spirit.

“You kept your chin up against the best in the world. You are world-class yourselves. Well done girls. You have represented your country and continent well and we are proud of you.”

'Rachier, don't listen to noisemakers' - Nyangi launches scathing attack aimed at Gor Mahia boss

The former official has revealed her great dissatisfaction with recent results, free player transfers and how the club is being run

Former Gor Mahia national organising secretary Judith Nyangi has launched an attack on chairperson Ambrose Rachier after a string of poor performances by the club in the FKF Premier League.

K'Ogalo are winless in the last seven games and Nyangi has directed her anger at the chair, pointing out key factors that could be working against the club.

Nyangi, who is a known defender of player rights, believes the club's boss is entirely to blame for everything that is wrong at the club.

House Party

"I believe you had a very beautiful sleep and sweet dreams after that beating by Ulinzi. I believe the club going for seven matches without a win is sweet music in your ears," Nyangi posted on Facebook.

"And I am sure, as we prepare to receive proper beatings on Sunday by AFC Leopards, you are also organizing a party at your house to celebrate the downfall of Gor Mahia.

"I believe the above is true because: you thrive when the executive committee is fighting and divided, you love to hear that players have refused to go train because of salary issues.

"You love to see Betsafe delay money so that you can blame poor results on them. And when they make payments, you rejoice because 50% of what they pay goes to brokers and the remaining 50% goes into paying "debts". You love to see members talk, talk and talk, knowing you have henchmen who will die for your name.

"You are doing a great job as chairman; the silence is very beautiful and great, the club is performing extremely well and the results are so sweet, the executive committee is extremely united and focused, the club has millions in our three pay bill numbers and bank accounts and this is beautiful, all our players have five-year contracts and this is excellent, none is leaving."

Best Management Style

Recently, Gor Mahia launched an initiative that would see them involve members and fans in collecting money to help stabilise the club, and Nyangi also talked about the move, sarcastically.

"Of the 200M we are looking for, your loyal fans have already given 199M and just a million left to go. Things are going well and you don't need other sponsors," she added.

"Your management style is the best and you don't need any support from anybody. The Fifa/Caf bans and regulations are all met and Gor are enjoying its moment.

"Have a good day Jakom. Don't be cheated that things are bad. Ador, we are headed in the right direction. Ador your loyal fans, voters, supporters, and sycophants are all happy with the team and are behind you.

"Don't call for meetings, don't call for any member consultations. Don't. Things are OK. You can handle it as you have done since 2008.

"You have the money and a swimming pool, and that's what Gor fans and members want to see. Don't listen to noisemakers like us, we don't know anything."

After meeting and winning in the FKF Shield Cup final, Gor Mahia will face arch-rivals AFC Leopards in the league on Sunday.

Following their recent run of results, Gor Mahia are eighth on the league table, 15 points behind leaders Tusker.

‘I’m feeling great, sharp’ – Chelsea’s Ziyech ready for Premier League after Bournemouth win

The 28-year-old forward was happy with the progress the Blues are making this pre-season ahead of the start of the league campaign

Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech is ready to get the Premier League campaign started after the team’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth in pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

The Blues were forced to battle from behind to win the match as Bournemouth took the lead through Emiliano Marcondes before two quick goals courtesy of strikers Armando Broja and Ike Ugbo, both second-half substitutes, gave them a win on the Dorset coast.

The Moroccan forward was handed his first start of pre-season by coach Thomas Tuchel and he was by partnered Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic in the attack, as Chelsea were looking to build on their 6-1 win over Peterborough United last week.

Despite failing to score against Bournemouth, Ziyech, who grabbed a hat-trick against Peterborough, believes he has done enough in pre-season to stake his position in the squad and added every player in the team is hungry to get started.

"I’m feeling great, sharp. I think for everybody, the days off that we’ve had have been good. Right now we can show our best, we are all hungry and sharp,” Ziyech told Chelsea TV after the game.

"The biggest thing is getting back the rhythm again, getting back to being fit again, to get the minutes in the leg. That’s the most important thing, to get ready for the real work.

"It’s always nice for the confidence but it’s not the biggest thing in the first place.

"We are enjoying every moment on the pitch right now, especially with the crowd back in the stadiums. It was a nice evening.”

On the team conceding first, Ziyech said: "That was the only thing but I think over the whole evening we had a good performance from everybody and we ended up winning 1-2.

"There was a lot of space, especially in the first half between the lines. I think we created a lot of chances in the first half, the only disappointment was that we didn’t score."

On the team’s next pre-season friendly against Arsenal, Ziyech said: "Those kind of games as a player everybody wants to play. We are looking forward to it.”

Ziyech further said he was happy to see new players getting goals.

"It's great to play with some new people. Broja and Ugbo with the goals are very talented. Ruben in midfield was very strong," he concluded.

After facing Arsenal, Chelsea will come up against another London club, Tottenham Hotspur, in their final pre-season match before they start their Premier League campaign with a home game against Crystal Palace on August 14.

'Its more severe than we hoped' - Solskjaer reveals Telles will miss start of Man Utd's 2021-22 season due to ankle injury

The Norwegian boss is not expecting the Brazilian full-back to return to action until September after seeing him pick up a serious knock

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Alex Telles will miss the start of Manchester United's 2021-22 season due to an ankle injury that is "more severe than we hoped".

Telles suffered a knock in training last week that forced him to sit out United's 4-2 friendly defeat to Queens Park Rangers, with Solskjaer initially predicting that his recovery would take "a few weeks".

However, the Norwegian boss has now confirmed that the defender is facing a far longer spell on the sidelines after being evaluated by the club's medical staff.

What's been said?

Luke Shaw is currently the Red Devils' first-choice right-back, but Brandon Williams could now be asked to step in and provide cover in Telles' absence.

“Unfortunately, it’s worse news on Alex Telles than we hoped for, his ankle injury is a little bit more severe than we hoped and he’ll be out for a little spell at least, the whole of August I would think,” Solskjaer told MUTV.

“That is football. We’ve got kids wanting to play of course. Brandon has done well in the left-back position."

How many games could Telles miss?

Telles is now destined to be absent for United's next three pre-season fixtures against Brentford, Preston and Everton before the new Premier League campaign kicks off on August 14.

Solskjaer's side will open their schedule against Leeds United at Old Trafford, with away fixtures against Southampton and Wolves set to follow.

Telles won't be available for those three outings, but could return to action in time for a home meeting with Newcastle on September 11 if his recovery goes smoothly.

Telles record for United

Telles moved to Old Trafford from Porto for £15 million ($21m) last October, and made 27 appearances across all competitions in his first season with the Red Devils.

The Brazilian also recorded two goals and six assists, but had to play second fiddle to Shaw, and his chances of moving ahead of the England international in the squad pecking order could now be significantly hampered as he starts down the comeback trail from injury.

Ikpeba ranks Musa among greatest Nigeria strikers

The retired Super Eagles forward explains why he thinks the current skipper is among the greatest strikers to have turned out for the national team

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has revealed the reason he ranks current skipper Ahmed Musa among the greatest strikers to have played for the national team.

The 48-year-old Ikpeba, who played for the Super Eagles on 31 occasions before retiring, has heaped praise on the 28-year-old, saying the next generation of Nigerian forwards should look to match his achievements.

His statement comes just six days after Musa sealed a free transfer to Turkish Super Lig club Fatih Karagumruk on a two-year contract, a move that saw the forward make a return to Europe.

Before the switch, Musa, who has also played for CSKA Moscow in Russia, was turning out for Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Ikpeba, who is well remembered to have scored for Nigeria during the 1998 World Cup held in France, has also welcomed the player's latest move to Turkey, saying it fits his status being the Super Eagles captain.

“It is good that Musa has finally secured a new club in Europe which fits his status as Super Eagles captain,” Ikpeba said as quoted by completesports.com.

“I think the move to Turkey is coming at a very good time for him ahead of next season and with the World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations finals coming up.

“Ahmed [Musa] has come of age in the Eagles and I ranked him among the greatest Nigerian strikers till date for scoring four goals for Nigeria in two World Cup outings.

“The goals were quality strikes too, you know. They were technically solid goals scored against top teams and at the biggest football event in the world.

"That is no mean feat because it is a record which other Nigerian strikers will be striving to break in the future.”

In a recent interview, the former Leicester City forward revealed why he had turned down offers from elsewhere to sign for Karagumruk on a permanent contract.

"I was very impressed with the team's philosophy, style of play and it's clearly an ambitious club," Musa said.

"I feel wanted and that's what made all the difference. I want to repay that faith. I can't wait to link up with my teammates and help the club achieve their ambitions."

The 1978 World Cup-winning Argentina coach hailed Messi's role in Argentina's Copa America triumph...

Former Argentina player and coach Cesar Luis Menotti suggested that the legendary Diego Maradona would have been extremely proud of Lionel Messi and co. who recently won the Copa America 2021 title in Brazil. La Albiceleste, under Messi's captaincy, won the Copa America title after a gap of 28 years after beating arch-rivals Brazil 1-0 in the final.

This was also the first senior international title in Messi's career. Speaking on Argentina's Radio Villa Trinidad, Menotti suggested that Maradona, who passed away in November 2020, would have been ecstatic with joy had he watched Argentina play at the Copa America 2020.

Menotti suggested that Maradona would've cried along with Messi after seeing Argentina lift the title.

"Diego, if he were still here, would have been very happy with this title. He would have been out there hugging Messi and there would have been tears," stated Menotti.

The Argentine great further praised Messi for leading the national team to glory and suggested that the Barcelona star is enjoying a great run of form at present.

"Messi is at the top of his game. He's happy and not just about the win, but also because he's surrounded by people who love him. Messi did amazing things for this team. Messi is a player who, unlike others, is prepared to win a match, to make his teammates play well and make his team play well.

He added, "It's also complicated being Messi, you know. He's at his best in every sense - emotionally and physically. He's a boy who's always prepared."

Menotti was the coach of Argentina Under-20 side, which had Maradona in their ranks, which won the World Youth Championship in 1979 at Japan. He also coached Maradona at Barcelona during the 1983-84 season. Menotti was also the coach as Argentina won their first ever World Cup in 1978 when they famously defeated Netherlands 3-1 at Buenos Aires.

The Argentina skipper scored four goals, provided five assists and had a direct contribution in nine out of Argentina's 13 goals in the tournament. He won the Best Players Award of the tournament and was the joint top scorer with Colombia's Luis Diaz.

During the course of the tournament, Messi surpassed his former Argentina and Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano and became the most-capped player for Argentina. He currently has 151 international caps for La Albiceleste.

Goal takes a look at the all-time highest goalscorers in Olympic football...

Football in the Olympics has been primarily an Under-23 competition since the 1992 games, with only three overaged players allowed in the squad for any team.

Hungary and Great Britain are the most successful teams in the history of Olympic men's football, winning the gold medal three times each. Hungary have also won the silver medal twice and the Bronze medal once.

Among the traditional giants of football, Argentina have won the gold twice. Their arch-rivals and five-time World Cup winners Brazil have won it just once in 2016.

Denmark's Sophus Nielsen and Hungary's Antal Dunai are the all-time highest goalscorers in the history of the Olympic men's football with 13 goals each to their name.

Argentina's Carlos Tevez and Brazil's Bebeto have scored eight goals each while Romario and Neymar have seven goals to their name. Neymar holds the record of scoring the fastest goals in Olympics football, 16 seconds which came against Honduras in the semifinal of the 2016 games. Brazil had won the tie 6-0.

Olympic football: Manchester United pair Bailly & Diallo face make-or-break bout

Ivory Coast need a positive result against Germany to avoid elimination from Tokyo 2020

If anyone offered Ivory Coast four points from six before they began their Olympic football journey in Tokyo, head coach Soualiho Haidara wouldn’t have believed his luck.

Given the presence of defending champions Brazil and Germany, the pair expected to make it out of Group D, going into their final group fixture against the European nation with their fate in their hands was definitely going to pass off as a success.

Nevertheless, there has to be a feel of glass half empty going into the Little Elephants’ decisive fixture in the Miyagi District on Wednesday. Even though a point against Brazil shouldn’t be gloom-ridden in normal circumstances, Sunday’s 0-0 result surely has to disappoint supporters of the African nation.

Following the dismissal of Douglas Luiz in the 14th minute for stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity, Haidara’s troops failed to really turn the screw for the rest of the game.

While Ivory Coast did receive their own red card after Kouassi Eboue was sent off after a second yellow with 11 minutes remaining, events between Luiz’s exit and the 79th minute were thoroughly disappointing.

The South Americans never looked to be undermanned in those 68 minutes and anyone who caught the game after the early incident might have thought the West Africans were the ones playing with 10 men.

In the second half, for instance, the Little Elephants had zero attempts in 45 minutes, despite playing over half an hour with an advantage.

It looked as though Haidara’s team went into the game at the Nissan Stadium looking to eke out a draw from the outset. When they gained the upper hand, they struggled to shift their mentality to playing more front-foot football and ultimately had to make do with a point.

Indeed, it was telling that Ivory Coast’s better players on the day were goalkeeper Ira Eliezer Tape and defenders Wilfried Singo and Eric Bailly.

The latter was busy for the entire game and was forced to clear the ball from danger on multiple occasions as Brazil pressed.

His Manchester United teammate, Amad Diallo, was yet again underwhelming. Perhaps, the teenager’s run-of-the-mill showings in Tokyo can be ascribed to Haidara’s rather humdrum approach so far in their opening two games.

Amad was far from his best in the first game and not even his assist for Franck Kessie’s impressive winner could do enough to embellish an ordinary outing. His withdrawal for Fiorentina man Christian Kouame just after the hour mark against Brazil was striking particularly as the team chased a possible winner.

While early elimination for the Man United duo means they’ll join up with their club teammates sometime in August, rather than September if they go deeper in the competition, the inability to pass Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s test will be a disappointment.

“I think everyone, when they grow up, watches the Olympics and can see Usain Bolt or Ryan Giggs. I saw him play in the Olympics [for Great Britain in 2012]!” Solskjaer told the club's website in mid-June. “When your country calls you up, I think I can’t stand in the way of that boyhood dream being fulfilled.

“Of course, Eric is over-age, but I think they can see the value of him and that’s why they brought him in," he added. “Amad is a young, exciting prospect. It’ll be good to see them. It’ll be their pre-season, but they’ve got to come back with a medal. We need a nice feel about the place when they come back!”

Getting the better of Germany won’t be easy. Stefan Kuntz’s team responded well to a 4-2 defeat by Brazil with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia last time out, leaving them a point back of the two sides occupying the qualification spots.

One positive for Ivory Coast, though, has to be the supposed soft underbelly of the European nation, whose concession of six goals in their opening two matches may point to a perceived weakness defensively.

It could allow Amad to finally flourish, too, although a top performance or otherwise may be influenced by Haidara, who knows all his team has to do is pick up a point in Rifu on Wednesday.

Things will definitely get interesting if the Germans score first, as that will precipitate an open game, which wouldn’t necessarily suit the West Africans.

For the neutral, it would be the perfect tonic for an enjoyable 90 minutes that will decide which nation goes through along with Brazil, tipped to get the better of the Saudis.

Solskjaer threw down the gauntlet to Bailly and Amad to win unprecedented gold for Ivory Coast in Tokyo. Having found themselves in a favourable position with their fate in their hands, exiting on Wednesday will be a disappointment.

However, the Little Elephants will have only themselves to blame for failing to turn the screw against what should have been a weakened Brazil side. Three points will have all but confirmed progress…now, they face a nervous 90 minutes against a free-scoring opponent to decide their fate at the Games.

Igor Stimac: India deserved more against Nepal

Chivas winger Isaac Brizuela is not concerned about the 2-1 defeat to Atletico San Luis that dimmed Liga MX's restart this past weekend.

In fact, the 30-year-old has said he's "convinced" the squad will finish among the top clubs in the Apertura as long as players are willing to take risks and trust themselves.

Brizuela has been with Chivas for the past eight seasons, including in 2018 when they won the CONCACAF Champions League, but results have taken a downturn since then.

What has been said?

"That is the word that I think is very key, trust yourself first, obviously doing things well will generate that," Brizuela told Chivas TV. "Look for a higher risk play and trust the one who is next to you.

"Also we ask the fans for trust and patience not because I think they have endured many [difficult seasons] ... but to invite them to trust in this squad.

"I am sure that great things are going to be done this tournament, even if they say that there were no changes, that only homegrown players have joined. I am convinced that the homegrown players will help us obtain what we are planning."

Chivas vulnerable to counterattack

"It was not a good start for us because we didn't play our normal style, obviously having the ball," Brizuela said. "I think that [Atletico] doing their job to what they came and look for a counterattack [caused us problems].

"We needed to have the ball more, have better possession, combine more, have more arrival by the bands, sending more crosses in.

"I think we stopped doing many things that in the last preseason game were done quite well."

Sergio Aguero's '93:20' moment inspired Manchester City's new home kit for the upcoming 2021/22 season...

On July 14, 2021, the new Manchester City home kit for the upcoming 2021/22 season was launced.

The theme of the home kit is inspired by the iconic 93:20 minute goal by Sergio Aguero in the 2011/12 season in the season finale against Queens Park Rangers which had sealed the title in the club's favour for only the second time in history.

What materials are used for the Man City jerseys?

"Before designing a jersey we internally develop new fabrics, materials and technologies. Once we agree on a certain material, we do prototypes of the jerseys and then we reach out to around five clubs where we can test and that happens three years in advance.

"We reach out to certain clubs in Europe and Latin America and talk to pro athletes usually second league teams, sometimes third league teams and we get their feedback on the designs if they feel comfortable or if something is distracting and then we evaluate the feedback. Sometimes we have to adjust some elements and sometimes we are good to go," Ulrich Planer, a Senior Graphic Designer for all Apparel at PUMA Teamsport told Goal.

When was Man City 2021/22 jersey design conceptualised?

"Once we decide on the template or the base material, we start thinking about what can we do for the season and that usually happens around two years before the launch. Together as a team, we talk about concepts, club-specific concepts, then we define what we are going to do on home and away jerseys.

"This probably takes around three or four months, the designing phase then going to the club, fine-tuning with the club then start prototyping, go back to the club with the prototypes, another round of feedback and then hopefully we agree on a certain design," said the senior graphic designer.

How does a Man City jersey differ from Dortmund's jersey, made by the same brand?

The new Man City home kit is made with a combination of 100% recycled polyester with advanced PUMA dryCELL thermoregulation technology which ensures uncompromising fit and mobility and keeps the player dry and comfortable. The jersey integrates an Ultra-light jacquard structure into the back of the jersey to enhance breathability during an intense performance.

"We always want to give our teams the best technology out there. We don't want to make a difference between a German club or an English club. They all get the best jersey out there.

"The difference of course is the club colours and crests and also the unique stories that we give to each club. Man City might want to celebrate an anniversary or Dortmund might have something else in their mind. The uniqueness comes from the different stories," stated Planer.

'We did not have the spark' - Cruz Azul boss Reynoso laments tired display in Mazatlan defeat

The reigning Liga MX champions suffered a shock home loss in their first game of the 2021 Apertura

Cruz Azul manager Juan Reynoso has criticized his side's intensity after they suffered a shock home loss to Mazatlan in their first game of the 2021-22 Liga MX Apertura.

The reigning Mexican champions were stunned 2-0 at home, going down to Nicolas Diaz's strike in first-half stoppage time and a second-half goal from Bryan Colula.

Reynoso says his team will have to improve quickly in order to avoid being left behind in the early stages of the Liga MX season, and said the absence of several key players to international duty was not an excuse.

What has been said?

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Reynoso said: "We did not have the spark, the intensity or the aggressiveness to press like we depend on.

"Football always gives you a message and today is a clear message of when we stop doing things, we are going to have nights like this.

"It would be easy to shield ourselves [behind the excuse of missing players], but if you play for this club it is because you have the capacity to reverse the situation. We showed it last game [against Leon], we did not expect such a performance here."

Absence of stars felt

Orbelin Pineda is with the senior Mexico side at the Gold Cup, while winger Roberto Alvarado and midfielder Luis Romo are in Tokyo with the Olympic team.

While missing three first team players is difficult for Cruz Azul, they must get used to their absence with Mexico having reached the semi-finals of the Gold Cup, facing Canada on July 29, while in the Olympics the U23s will reach the knock-out stages should they defeat South Africa tomorrow.

Instead, the reigning Liga MX champions must dust themselves down to face Santos Laguna away on Monday.

Delight for Mazatlan

While Reynoso and his players were left to lick their wounds, Mazatlan coach Benat San Jose could not hide his excitement at his team having beaten the champions at the Azteca.

He said: "It is a very good feeling about how we have done it, we have not stopped for a moment, we have attacked our rival all the time.

"It is a very good feeling and very proud of the players, it was a very good match. complex because we had many important players missing."

Bayern Munich close to signing teenage Chelsea talent Emran Soglo

The Bundesliga champions, having previously lured Jamal Musiala from Stamford Bridge, are looking to repeat the trick with another wonderkid

Bayern Munich are very close to signing 16-year-old Chelsea talent Emran Soglo, Goal can confirm.

Soglo, a central attacking midfielder who can also play on the wing, is currently in Munich and trained last week with the Bayern Under-17s squad. After impressing, he is now with the U19s.

No final decision has yet been made, however Bayern have been impressed and will offer a contract which Soglo is keen to accept.

Bayern raid Chelsea again

It is not surprising that Bayern are once again on the verge of signing a talent from Chelsea, after they successfully lured away current first-teamer and senior Germany international Jamal Musiala in 2019.

Marco Neppe, who was recently promoted from chief scout to technical director, has recently made important strategic decisions and restructured the club's scouting department.

Neppe brought Florian Zahn, a Chelsea scout, to Munich last year. Zahn, who had worked in the youth sector of Kaiserslautern before his time in London, was appointed the new chief scout a few weeks ago. One of his first official acts was to invite Soglo to Munich.

What type of player is Soglo?

The comparisons to Musiala are not just restricted to the clubs he has played for. Soglo is also left-footed, and can be deployed wide, centrally as a No 10, or even in a deeper midfield playmaker role.

According to Bayern sources, his footballing intelligence and directness on the ball have impressed and convinced the senior hierarchy Soglo has what it takes to make it in first-team football.

The final deal should be reached in a few days, with Soglo keen to move from Stamford Bridge to the Bundesliga champions.

Explained: Why has Serie A banned green kits?

Here's what you need to know about why Serie A are forbidding clubs to have green in their kits, and which clubs could be affected by the new rule

Serie A has announced a new rule that states that all clubs will be prohibited from wearing green kits.

A handful of top-flight Italian teams have shades of green in their stripes, so how will these clubs be affected – and why has the rule been implemented?

Goal takes a look.

Why are green kits being banned from Serie A?

Serie A has banned green kits worn by outfield players for the purposes of television clarity.

Home kits, however, are understood to be exempt from this rule, with the ban applying to away and third kits.

It was reported that green kits will be banned due to the colour clashing with the grass on the pitch, potentially causing confusion for viewers at home.

Television broadcasters raised concerns that the green of the grass would blend with the green of the kits.

The rule will only apply to outfield players, as well as socks and shorts, so goalkeepers are not considered under this rule. Should a kit incorporate three different colours, a non-green shade must be applied as the dominant colour.

Clubs will still be able to use green as part of their kit, but not as the primary shade.

When will the Serie A green kit ban take place?

The ban will be implemented from the 2022-23 season onwards.

Serie A announced the rule change a year early so that clubs and kit manufacturers would have appropriate time to change their strips accordingly.

What Serie A teams currently wear green kits?

Sassuolo's home kit is traditionally green and black, but they will be exempt from the ban as it is their home attire and green is not the sole, dominant colour in their palette.

Away and third kits will be the strips that are affected. Lazio had donned a lime-green away kit for the 2020-21 season, though this will not be allowed in future seasons.

Venezia also have green in their emblem, and green is a major colour in their home kit, but won't be affected by this rule.

Team news & rosters

Position Spain roster
Goalkeepers Simon, Fernandez, Villar

Midfielders Zubimendi, Merino*, Ceballos*, Soler, Moncayola, Pedri, Puado, Bryan Gil
Forwards Asensio*, Mir, Oyarzabal, Olmo

With a narrow lead atop Group C, Luis de la Fuente will know that his side need only a draw to assure themselves of their place in the knockout stage, no matter what happens between Australia and Egypt.

That he can call upon a whole host of players who impressed for their country at Euro 2020 is no small feat either, with Pedri, Mikel Oyarzabal and Eric Garcia all likely to play key roles in their final group-stage game.

Predicted Spain starting XI: Simon; Oscar Gil, Garcia, Torres, Cucurella; Zubimendi; Soler, Pedri; Puado, Oyarzabal, Olmo.

Position Argentina roster
Goalkeepers Ledesma*, Morales, Blazquez
Defenders Perez, Bravo, De La Fuente, Mosevich, Herrera, Medina, Ortega
Midfielders Vera, Urzi, Colombatto, Mac Allister, Barco, Payero, Belmonte, Almada, Valenzuela
Forwards Gaich, De la Vega, Ponce

Having been forced to contend with a Copa America campaign in the lead-up to this year's rearranged games, Fernando Batista has only taken one overage player with him to Tokyo, in the shape of goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma.

With victory against Egypt having balanced out an opening defeat to Australia, Ledesma - and the rest of the starting XI - will likely keep their places, including Atlanta's Ezequiel Barco and Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister.

Predicted Argentina starting XI: Ledesma; De La Fuente, Perez, Medina, Bravo; Payero, Vera; De la Vega, Mac Allister, Barco; Gaich.
