Mexico to face South Korea in Olympics quarter-finals after beating South Africa

El Tri beat France to a place in the final eight, while Brazil will take on Egypt in the next round

Mexico will play South Korea in the quarter-finals of the Olympics after beating South Africa 3-0 in their final group game.

El Tri's victory on Wednesday saw them finish second in the group behind Japan, who claimed top spot after beating France.

France's 4-0 defeat by Japan was the second time they had conceded four goals in the tournament, while Argentina and Germany also failed to make it through to the knockout stages.

Who else is in the quarter-finals?

Brazil's hunt for a second consecutive Olympic gold medal will continue with a quarter-final clash against Egypt.

The 2016 winners beat Saudi Arabia on Wednesday to finish top of Group D with seven points, two ahead of Ivory Coast.

That result ensures Dani Alves and Co. continue to the knockout stages of the competition and will face the African side, who finished second in Group C.

Tournament hosts Japan finished top of Group A with a perfect record, beating South Africa, Mexico and France.

They have set up a tie with New Zealand, who beat Romania on goal difference to Group B's runners-up spot.

After finishing top of Group C with five points, Spain will take on Ivory Coast to fight for a place in the last four.

When will the quarter-finals be played?

All the matches will be played on Saturday July 31.

Spain vs Ivory Coast will be the first game to kick-off at Miyagi Stadium in Rifu, followed by Japan's clash with New Zealand. The Brazil tie follows, then South Korea will take on Mexico in Yokohama to round off the evening.

What is the quarter-final draw?

It turned out to be the worst participation in football for the African side after failing to win their three games

South Africa were sent out of the Olympic Games after losing 3-0 to Mexico in a football Group A match at the Sapporo Dome on Wednesday.

Two first-half goals by Ernesto Vega (18th minute) and Luis Romo (45) as well as Henry Martin’s strike on the hour mark condemned South Africa to a woeful campaign,

After being beaten 1-0 by Japan before falling 4-3 to France, David Notoane’s men went down to seal a record of South Africa’s worst participation at the games as they finished at the button of their pool.

South Africa coach David Notoane brought back Thendo Mukumela for Reeve Frosler into the starting lineup while Kamohelo Mahlatsi started ahead of Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

Mexico had better exchanges when the match started but Luke Fleurs and Tercious Malepe were steely to avoid conceding.

As Mexico piled pressure, Fleurs was active to block Romo who had eliminated some defenders in the 26th minute.

It finally paid for the Central and South Americans when Carlos Antuna crossed for an unmarked Vega to connect and break the deadlock.

It was an episode which exposed South Africa's defence as Vega was unattended to inside the box.

Vega was back again but this time found an alert Ronwen Williams to deny him from close range.

Mexico continued with their dominance and had Romo capitalising to hit home from a Lebohang miscued attempted clearance off a fisted clearance by Williams.

The second goal by Mexico appeared to have sucked the power out of South Africa who struggled to match up with their opponents.

An anxious moment two minutes into the second half saved by Malepe cleared after an exchange between Romo, Martin and Antuna.

An attempt by South Africa to hit back was then frustrated when Evidence Makgopa was a bit slow to rise and head in a cross from Thano Cele in the 51st minute.

Problems deepened for the Africans who then had Malepe red-carded 10 minutes into the second half.

Three minutes after Malepe’s sending off Martin was sent through by Carlos Rodrigues to beat Williams and make it three goals for Mexico.

But numbers were levelled up when New Zealand referee Matthew Conger showed a red card to Rodriguez in the 66th minute.

Romo then almost got his second goal of the match but shot just wide as South Africa showed no hopes of clawing back into the contest.

With 13 minutes to go, Fleurs was at hand to clear with his head on the goal line a deceiving cross from Romo as South Africa survived another attack.

Mokoena forced a save from Mexico veteran goalkeeper Francisco Ochoa to make a desperate save in stoppage time but that was not enough to at least get a consolation goal.

Andreas Pereira seals loan move to Flamengo from Man Utd

The teenager has traded in his No.32 jersey ahead of the 2021-22 campaign and could now be given a key role in new coach Marco Rose's set-up

United States national team star Giovanni Reyna has been given the No.7 shirt at Borussia Dortmund following Jadon Sancho's move to Manchester United.

Sancho completed a long-awaited £73 million ($101m) transfer to Old Trafford last week, bringing to an end his four-year stay at Westfalenstadion in the process.

BVB have already moved quickly to replace the England international by signing Donyell Malen from PSV, but the Dutchman will be wearing the No.21 jersey from next season instead of No.7, which has instead been passed onto teenage midfielder Reyna.

What's been said?

Dortmund have confirmed the news in a post on their official Twitter account showing Reyna in his new shirt with the caption: "Introducing Borussia Dortmund's newest #7, Giovanni Alejandro Reyna"

The 18-year-old previously donned the No.32 jersey, but has been given an upgrade which suggests that he could have a key role to play in new coach Marco Rose's plans next season.

Reyna's rapid rise at BVB

Dortmund snapped up Reyna from New York City FC's academy back in 2019, and became the youngest American to ever play in the Bundesliga when making his debut in January the following year.

The talented young playmaker has since made a total of 64 appearances across all competitions for Dortmund, while also recording eight goals and nine assists.

Reyna helped the German giants win the DFB Pokal and finish fourth in the Bundesliga last term, and will be expected to reach even greater heights in their upcoming campaign.

He could push for a start in his new No.7 shirt when Dortmund open their 2021-22 top-flight schedule at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on August 14.

‘Finally it is home’ – Golden trophy for FKF Premier League arrives – Mwendwa

The federation boss reveals to Goal they have finally shipped in the golden trophy for the current season from Dubai

The Football Kenya Federation has confirmed the arrival of the eagerly awaited Golden trophy for the ongoing Premier League season.

When the current season kicked off, the federation through president Nick Mwendwa confirmed to Goal they will ship in a trophy made of pure gold that will be awarded to the winning team.

The wait for the trophy has dragged on, with Mwendwa confirming to Goal in a recent interview its arrival had been hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic travelling protocols and there was uncertainty whether the winning team will take home a trophy when the season ends on August 22.

However, Mwendwa has now confirmed to Goal the 24-carat trophy landed in the country on Wednesday in time for the season's conclusion.

What has been said?

“The trophy is now home, it is here and must be a shock to the doubting Thomas, who thought we were not serious to bring the golden trophy for the top-flight,” Mwendwa told Goal on Wednesday.

“It is made pure of gold and we will parade it to the public in due course, for now, we are planning to have it live on a local TV station and then after that, we will plan for the way forward.

“The TV show will be today [Wednesday], we want the interview to be done during prime time news so that Kenyans can see the trophy for themselves before they get the real chance to see it live.

“We have already booked KCB Bank and that is where we will keep it [the trophy], it is round in shape, very good for everyone’s eyes, these are some of the changes we promised after taking over the league.”

Apart from the golden trophy, Mwendwa also confirmed that the winner of the league will also take home a cool Ksh5million, while the same amount will be shared among the remaining 17 clubs.

“Winners of the league will get Ksh5million, plus the golden trophy, then another Ksh5million will be divided amongst the remaining teams,” Mwendwa continued.

Last season, the league winners, who were Gor Mahia, did not receive a trophy for their achievements after the then-league organisers – Kenyan Premier League – failed to provide one following the exit of title sponsors SportPesa

Baba Rahman: Is there a Chelsea future for Ghana star under Tuchel?

The West African played a decent role in the Blues’ comeback win at Bournemouth, but it remains to be seen if he’ll be retained in 21/22

Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Bournemouth was enjoyable not just for the returning away supporters at the Vitality Stadium, but also for the neutrals watching from a distance.

The intensity of the match was unlike any pre-season encounter, which probably pleased Thomas Tuchel following his pre-match comments regarding effort and industry. Having, more or less, indicated his plan regarding substitutions before kick-off, there was an interest to see how substitutes would fare after their introductions.

The aforementioned included Abdul Rahman Baba, back at the club after a successful loan spell in Greece with PAOK. Baba interestingly played at left wing-back at times for the eventual cup winners, so this meant he’d be an option for Tuchel who has utilised several variations of a 3-4-3 since taking charge in West London.

There was some disappointment that the Ghanaian wasn’t one of the seven half-time Chelsea changes at the Vitality, with the German tactician keeping Marcos Alonso in that role for another 18 minutes.

Baba eventually got his chance after the hour but struggled to get into the game.

It didn’t help that he was introduced at a time where the Blues struggled to cope with the Cherries seizing control following Tuchel’s changes in midfield. After utilising Connor Gallagher and Danny Drinkwater in tandem in the opening half, the former sat deeper with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley on either side as free 8’s after the interval.

This limited the West African by extension as Scott Parker’s men swarmed all over the visitors, wresting control in the second 45. Baba barely got a kick after his introduction and was crucially on the back foot in the build-up to Bournemouth’s goal.

David Brooks and Jack Stacey created a two-v-one situation, exposing the wing-back who was then slow to close down Stacey’s ball into the six-yard box that led to the Cherries going ahead.

Moments later, Tuchel instructed the powerfully built Loftus-Cheek to drop deeper alongside Gallagher, thus helping the European champions regain the foothold.

The game initially looked to passing Baba by, and the first time he galloped forward seemed to end in a loss of possession following a heavy touch. However, he didn’t give it up and after exchanging passes with Loftus-Cheek, sent a delicious cross into the box for Armando Broja to level in the 71st minute.

Bournemouth were only ahead for five minutes and the assist reminded Blues fans of Rahman's quality deliveries from wide positions.

While there was a sense the Cherries could exploit his flank with Jake Clarke-Salter equally looking shaky, nothing materialised for the rest of the match and Tuchel’s team came from behind to secure the win.

It remains to be seen where that performance leaves the 27-year-old.

Pre-season only just got going with several players returning at the weekend with the English and Italian contingent yet to return.

In that sense, Baba gets ample time to make an impression on the former Paris Saint-Germain boss before Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri are back at Cobham. The presence of four left wing-back options may prove to be the African’s undoing especially as he finds himself bottom of the pecking order.

Of course, this may well change, owing to continued reports over Emerson’s future with Napoli and other Serie A clubs routinely interested in bringing him back to Italy’s top division. There have also been reports that the Blues may include the former Roma defender in any deal involving Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde, although that remains uncertain.

Given that Chilwell is going nowhere having only arrived from Leicester City last summer, a future for the 27-year-old at Stamford Bridge requires sales of the Euro 2020 winner and Alonso, who theoretically took his place in the squad five years ago.

The Spain wing-back still has two years left on his contract, too, so a departure is unlikely for the 2016/17 Premier League champion.

Thus, it hasn’t been surprising to see rumours of the West African’s exit this summer. A loan return to old side Augsburg has been mooted by Kicker given the injury problems of current left-back options Iago and Mads Pedersen, leaving Markus Weinzierl’s team to consider Baba as a prospective solution.

Even though Olympiacos are also said to be interested in a temporary deal, one would understand why the Ghana left-back would prefer a return to his old stomping ground over another switch to Greece.

A place at Chelsea may be complicated to attain for the fit-again Baba, but suitors are growing for the defender who hopes his injury hell is behind him as he looks to enjoy a fulfilling 2021/22, at Stamford Bridge or beyond.

The Premier League and Football Association have introduced the new policy to help further protect players

The Football Association (FA) and Premier League have issued new guidance to clubs regarding headers.

The recommendations are focused on reducing the number of higher-force headers players do in training.

The guidance has been agreed by the FA, Premier League, English Football League, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) and the League Managers Association (LMA) and applies to all levels of English football, including grassroots and amateur.

What has been said?

The new guidance has been developed for the 2021-22 campaign after medical and policy representatives from the FA, Premier League, EFL, FA Women’s Super League, PFA and LMA commissioned four preliminary studies on heading.

A statement  from the FA and Premier League read: "Based on those early findings, which showed the majority of headers involve low forces, the initial focus of the guidance will be on headers that involve higher forces. These are typically headers following a long pass (more than 35 metres) or from crosses, corners and free kicks.

"It will be recommended that a maximum of 10 higher-force headers are carried out in any training week. This recommendation is provided to protect player welfare and will be reviewed regularly as further research is undertaken to understand more regarding the impact of heading in football.

"The guidance also recommends clubs develop player profiles that consider gender, age, playing position, the number of headers per match and the nature of these headers.

"These profiles can be used to ensure that all training sessions reflect the type and quantity of headers that a player could expect to undertake within a match."

Why has the new guidance been issued?

The new policy has been introduced in an attempt to protect players at all levels of the game.

"Our priority is to make the game as safe as possible for all players," said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

"We have worked collaboratively across football to undertake these initial research projects to help us further understand the impact of heading and inform guidance for all levels of the game.

"This is a long-term piece of work. We will now build on these studies and we remain committed to further research to ensure we have the right approach in place to protect the welfare of all players."

The Austrian defender is now set for a spell in quarantine after being diagnosed with the virus during the club's latest round of medical checks

Real Madrid summer signing David Alaba has emerged as a doubt for the club's upcoming friendly clash with AC Milan after testing positive for Covid-19.

Alaba completed a free transfer to Santiago Bernabeu after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, and linked up with his new team-mates in the Spanish capital last week for the start of pre-season training.

The Austria international was in line to make his debut for Real against Milan on August 8, but his first appearance could now be delayed after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

What's been said?

The Spanish giants have confirmed the news in an official statement on their website, which reads: "Real Madrid CF communicates that our player David Alaba has tested positive for Covid-19."

How many other games could Alaba miss?

Alaba will now spend the next 10 days in quarantine in accordance with Covid-19 regulations in Spain, and will have to post a negative test on the day of the Milan fixture in order to be eligible for selection.

If the 29-year-old does not play, head coach Carlo Ancelotti may start sweating on his fitness ahead of the new La Liga season, with the Blancos set to begin their schedule with a trip to Alaves on August 14.

The bigger picture

Alaba is expected to make a big impact at Real in 2020-21 after 13 trophy-laden seasons at Bayern, where he established himself as one of the top defenders of his generation.

Supporters will hope that his recovery goes smoothly, or else Ancelotti could be facing a real selection problem at the back, with former club captain Sergio Ramos having moved onto pastures new at Paris Saint-Germain and his old centre-back partner Raphael Varane on the verge of joining Manchester United.

The Blancos may have to turn to academy options if Alaba is absent at the start of the season, with Eder Militao, Nacho and Jesus Vallejo the only other natural options in the heart of the defence currently available in the senior squad.

The 25-year-old already owns a stake in MLB team Kansas City Royals but has now stepped into the football world, too

NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the latest figure to join the ownership goup of MLS side Sporting Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs star was confirmed as the newest member of the club's ownership group in July 2021.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love,” Mahomes told the club's website.

“Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City.”

Does Patrick Mahomes own Sporting Kansas City?

Patrick Mahomes is now part of the MLS side's ownership group, Sporting Club, so he is a part-owner of the team.

The company, based in Kansas, was founded by five local entrepreneurs and has invested over $200 million (£144m) in soccer across the city.

Sporting Club bought the Kansas City Wizards in 2006 and then rebranded the club four years later.

In 2015, the collective was interested in taking ownership of Premier League side Everton but did not go so far as entering serious talks to buy the club.

Prior to the new venture, Mahomes was already a part-owner of the Major League Baseball team Kansas City Royals.

Principal owner of Sporting KC, Cliff Illig said: "Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group."

"In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer.

"Patrick is also accustomed to cultivating a winning culture and we look forward to contending for championships at Children's Mercy Park well into the future."

Who is Patrick Mahomes & what is his net worth?

Patrick Mahomes is the star quarterback for NFL side Kansas City Chiefs. He was born on September 17, 1995.

He was voted NFL MVP in 2018 and then helped guide the Chiefs to Super Bowl victory in 2020.

Later that year, the Chiefs tied him down with a 10-year contract extension that would see him earn $503 million (£362m) including bonuses.

It is the biggest deal in the history of American sports, breaking the record set by former boxer Mike Tyson. The contract Lionel Messi signed with Barcelona in 2017 is the only sports deal with a higher value.

Mahomes' net worth is $40 million (£29m) according to celebritynetworth.com. That figure is expected to rise significantly following his latest lucrative deal.

Are there other high profile MLS owners?

Mahomes is just the latest famous figure to take ownership of a team in MLS.

Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey became a minority owner in Austin FC in 2019. The Texan side debuted in MLS in 2021.

Former England, Manchester United and Real Madrid star David Beckham is also involved in MLS.

He spent five years playing in the United States with LA Galaxy but is now a member of the group that owns Florida team Inter Miami.

He is not the only superstar athlete to become part owner of a team in another sport.

Among NBA legend LeBron James' many business investments is Premier League giants Liverpool.

The LA Lakers hero is one of the minority shareholders in the Merseyside team, which is owned by American company Fenway Sports Group.

He purchased a reported two per cent stake in the club in 2011.

Another LA Lakers legend, Magic Johnson, is part of the LAFC ownership group, along with Will Ferrell, Mia Hamm and others.

Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant owns a stake in Philadelphia Union, while his team-mate James Harden and coach Steve Nash are part-owners of Houston Dynamo and Vancouver Whitecaps respectively.

The Bafana star is hopeful their combined experience will play a critical role in their pursuit of silverware at Amakhosi

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Keagan Dolly has explained what his reunion with Khama Billiat will mean for the Premier Soccer League side.

Dolly and Billiat played alongside each other at Mamelodi Sundowns, before seeking greener pastures elsewhere - Dolly left the PSL for Montpellier in 2017, while Billiat crossed the Jukskei river to join Chiefs a year later.

On Tuesday, Dolly, a Caf Champions League winner with Sundowns, completed a three-year move to Chiefs after the expiration of his contract with the Ligue 1 side, and his experience is expected to help Amakhosi, who are rebuilding after completing a Fifa transfer ban.

"I am excited about being here and starting my career with Chiefs. I am looking forward to getting in touch with teammates and coaches and getting down to business," Dolly told the club's media department.

"I speak with Khama a lot and it is an exciting time to play with him again, especially after we had good connections when we played at Sundowns.

"We will bring what we have learnt throughout a couple of seasons that we played for different clubs. We can come back, work hard for the team and score more goals as we encourage each other.

"I feel right at home because I know a lot of players that are part of the team. That will make me settle and work together."

The attacking midfielder also revealed his childhood connection with the Glamour Boys and spoke about his experience in France.

"Since I was young, my father introduced me to Chiefs and I supported Chiefs I think since the age of five, as I used to attend the stadium to watch Stanton Fredericks and Jabu Pule when I used to play for Westbury Arsenal," he added.

"So, it is not new to me, I know what the club is all about, I know the mentality of the club and, as I said, I am ready to settle in, get to know everyone and get down to business."

"My time in France was a good one, a learning curve for me, perhaps with a few setbacks in terms of injuries and not getting as much game time, but I grew as a person and as a player because I learned a lot from Europeans, especially how they deal with struggles.

"For now, I know what to expect when something like that happens to me again."

The 28-year-old also explained how he hopes to help Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Happy Mashiane at the Soweto Giants.

"Coming back to Chiefs, I hope to help the youngsters coming up. I watched Mashiane, I watched Ngcobo playing and are looking very good. I will give them advice where I can," he concluded.

"I learnt a lot in France and I hope I have come back to share my experience. With us the senior players in the team, we will share the experience and encourage the boys to keep them on track."

Dolly spent four seasons with Montpellier.

The French striker has been missing since March after sustaining the injury while on international duty

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Anthony Martial is recovering from a knee injury but has not yet resumed training with his Manchester United team-mates.

Martial has been out of action since he sustained the injury while on international duty with France in March.

The striker missed the end of United's 2020-21 season as well as France's Euro 2020 campaign because of the injury.

What has been said?

But Solskjaer has said the 25-year-old is on his way back as the Red Devils prepare for the new season.

The coach told the club's website : "Anthony Martial has also joined us, but he’s not joined the team training yet. He’s recovering from the knee injury and that looks good."

How did Martial perform last season?

Martial contributed four goals and three assists to United's Premier League campaign last season.

The France international featured 22 times in the English top flight as his side finished second to Manchester City.

He also netted twice and set up another one in the Champions League group stage before the Red Devils dropped into the Europa League.

What next for Man Utd?

United's preparation for the new season continues on Wednesday when they host Brentford in a friendly.

They will then take on Preston in another friendly on Saturday before rounding off their pre-season preparations with a game against Everton.

A week later they will welcome Leeds to Old Trafford on Saturday, August 14 for their opening Premier League fixture of the season.

The teenage defender has moved to St Mary's on a permanent three-year contract, and will initially join up with the club's B team

Chelsea starlet Dynel Simeu has completed a £1.5 million move to Southampton ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Goal reported that the two clubs reached an agreement on the permanent transfer last week, and the deal has now been made official.

The 19-year-old has joined Southampton on a three-season deal, which will keep him at St Mary's until 2024, bringing to an end his seven-year affiliation with the Blues.

What's been said?

Simeu, who was raised in Southampton before moving to west London, expressed his delight after being officially unveiled by the Saints on Wednesday, with the talented defender now set to go straight into the club's B team set-up.

“I feel glad, finally, that the move was made possible. I'm just excited to get started," he told the club's media channel.

“It's nice to be back home, I've had a really friendly welcome. I feel comfortable that I'm home with my family, so I'm excited.

“I hope to hit the ground running, get fit and comfortable with the boys and then hopefully push towards the first-team.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, confirmed Simeu's departure in an official statement of their own, which reads: "Academy defender Dynel Simeu has today completed a permanent transfer to Southampton.

"We thank Dynel for his time at the club and wish him well in the future."

Why did Chelsea let Simeu leave?

Goal understands that Simeu was offered a new contract at Chelsea, but ultimately decided that Southampton would be the best place for him to continue his development.

The England Under-19 international will be fast-tracked into the Saints' senior squad if he impresses with their B team - an opportunity that would not have been forthcoming had he opted to stay with the Blues.

Chelsea were happy to sanction Simeu's departure, but have included a sizable sell-on fee in the final deal so that they can potentially make an even greater profit on the teenager in the future.

Simeu captained the Blues' development squad and won the Premier League 2 title in 2019-20, but leaves Stamford Bridge without a single first-team appearance to his name.

Miquissone: Kaizer Chiefs bid rejected, Al Ahly increase offer for Simba SC winger

The African champions have upped their offer for the winger as Amakhosi’s second bid has been rejected by the Msimbazi giants

Simba SC have turned down the latest transfer offer from Kaizer Chiefs for the services of their winger Luis Miquissone.

Goal can exclusively reveal the South African giants had tabled a second offer to sign the winger, but the Msimbazi giants have rejected it and are now in discussion with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who are also in the race to sign the player.

Goal understands the African champions have already tabled an improved offer of $2 million, which is more than what Amakhosi had tabled and it is the reason Simba have hinted at opening negotiations with the North African giants.

A source within Simba, who did not want to be named, has confirmed to Goal the club’s board of directors will meet with head coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa to decide whether to release Miquissone to Al Ahly or not.

What has been said?

“We have a very good offer from Al Ahly, it came after the one from Kaizer [Chiefs] was turned down,” the source told Goal. “We are now waiting to meet and discuss whether we can allow the player to leave or not.

“Remember we will also be taking part in the Caf Champions League and our main focus is to make sure we keep our best players [Miquissone] being one of them, so we will strive to see what is done for the best of the club.

“Al Ahly really want Miquissone and have decided to give that large amount of money to complete the deal without any restrictions on matters of interest.”

Goal can also reveal the pint-sized winger is also keen to reunite with coach Pitso Mosimane after he worked with him at Mamelodi Sundowns before he moved to Simba.

The 26-year-old star was among the key players for the Msimbazi giants as they performed well in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals before they were eliminated by Chiefs 4-3 on aggregate.

He was particularly impressive when Simba came up against the Egyptian giants, scoring a beautiful goal during their first meeting at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium as Simba went on to shock them 1-0 in their Group A fixture.

Bayern Munich chief rules out Erling Haaland move

The winger is being heavily linked with a move to England ahead of the 2021-22 season, having just entered the final two years of his contract

Leon Bailey's stepfather Craig Butler has confirmed that Aston Villa are in talks to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star.

Villa have reportedly identified Bailey as their next summer transfer target, having already snapped up Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City and Ashley Young on a free transfer following his departure from Inter.

Butler has now confirmed that the Villans are in contact with Leverkusen over a potential deal for Bailey, who still has two years remaining on his current contract at Bay Arena.

What's been said?

Asked to address Villa's links with Bailey amid reports he could be sold for around €30 million (£26m/$35m), his stepfather has told BILD : "The clubs are holding talks."

Butler went on to reveal that the 23-year-old is also attracting interest from a number of other English clubs, but added that there is still a strong possibility that he could end up staying at Leverkusen for the duration of the 2021-22 campaign.

“There are different interested parties from the Premier League. We are checking the options," he added.

“It is important that Leon takes the right step. Therefore it has not yet been decided whether he will change this transfer period or later.

“Leon feels at home in Leverkusen. There will only be a change if everyone is satisfied."

Why is Bailey in such high demand?

Bailey has emerged as one of the most exciting young wingers in the Bundesliga since joining Leverkusen from Genk for €20 million (£17m/$24m) in January 2017.

The Jamaican attacker has featured in 156 games for the German outfit to date, scoring 39 goals, including 15 last season as he helped them secure a sixth-place Bundesliga finish and reach the Europa League round of 32.

Bailey has also recorded 26 assists during his time at Bay Arena, and has previously been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, while also being mooted as a potential target for French giants Paris-Saint Germain.

Inspired by Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates, Marumo Gallants eye continental success

The Limpopo Province club are among the South African teams that will participate in the continental competitions next season

Marumo Gallants chairperson Abram Sello has stated they will try to emulate Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates' achievements when they participate in the Caf Confederation Cup next season.

The businessman hopes for a good season in the Premier Soccer League as well as in the continental competition, where he believes his side will be motivated by what their PSL rivals did before.

Gallants appointed French tactician Sebastien Migne in a surprising move to replace Dylan Kerr, who helped them win the Nedbank Cup and retain their top-tier status last season.

On the continental scene last season, Chiefs advanced to the final of the Champions League where they lost to Pitso Mosimane's Al Ahly, while Pirates were eliminated by eventual winners Raja Casablanca at the Confederation Cup's quarter-final stage.

"When you start anything, you have dreams and goals. Our dream is that we finish in the top four, not even the top eight. Secondly, defend our Nedbank Cup and do well in the Caf competition," Sello said as was quoted by FARPost.

"It will be our first time at Caf level, so say we can get closer to where our fellow brothers Orlando Pirates and Chiefs ended up, maybe last eight that would be very good. Those three goals are very important for us."

"We had to reemphasize and reinforce, as you know after winning the Nedbank, we have to go to participate at Caf Confederation Cup. So, the requirement there is to have the Caf A coaching license.

"But so far, we are studying him [Migne], he is studying us. Let’s see what he can deliver, lots of promises but let’s see."

Migne - who has already joined the team in their pre-season training camp - will be assisted by Jean-Francois Losciuto.

When the Migne and his new technical bench were announced, Gallants also confirmed the signing of 27-year-old Muhammad Zaid Patel, who played for Spanish club Loja CD FC, Zimbabwean-born Learnmore Muyambo, who featured for Harare City FC, and Joreon Lombe Lumu from the Netherlands.

Washington Arubi - a Zimbabwean goalkeeper - signed a contract extension with the Limpopo-based outfit.
