Why Orlando Pirates are actively involved in transfer window - Mbele explains

The Buccaneers reveal the reason behind their transfer policy which has seen them sign over 30 players in the past three seasons

Orlando Pirates have come out to defend their transfer policy which has seen them sign more than 30 players in the last three transfer windows.

The Buccaneers have already been actively involved in the ongoing window by bringing on board Kwanda Mngonyama and Bandile Shandu from Maritzburg United, Goodman Mosele from Baroka FC, and Monnapule Saleng (Free State Stars).

The club’s administrative officer Floyd Mbele has defended their active involvement in the transfer period, insisting their recruitment exercise is mainly backed by the recommendations which they receive from the technical bench.

What has been said?

“I don’t think it’s a fair assessment that we sign too many players,” Mbele said as quoted by Sowetan.

“The question is who’s not signing players? Look at the teams above us [AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns]. How many players have they signed?

“Even Kaizer [Chiefs] have been signing players now that their transfer ban is over.

“The coaching team tells us when the team needs reinforcing. Currently, all the players are in pre-season and they [technical team] will come back to us to tell us if there are players who have to be released or more to be added.

“They will tell what they are comfortable working with because you don’t want a squad where some players are dejected due to lack of game time, but also you have to maintain a balance given that we living in uncertain times due to Covid-19 pandemic.”

Why Pirates must beef up squad

Mbele has further explained with the uncertainty being brought about by the coronavirus pandemic and the team’s participation in Caf Confederation Cup next season, they have to do everything to beef up their squad for any eventualities.

“The pandemic has a huge impact on the wellness of players. It’s not just about recovery, but whether you can play immediately after you’ve recovered,” Mbele continued.

“You have to bear in mind the travelling you have to do when playing in the Confederation Cup.

"For instance, when we went to Libya [to face Ahli Benghazi], we had to take four flights to get there, and four to return, then we had a PSL match a few days later. You need to keep the squad fresh for such challenges.”

By virtue of finishing third in the PSL last season, Pirates have another chance to compete in the Confederation Cup.

Lokonga picks Arsenal player he is most excited to work with and names midfield inspirations

The Gunners new boy insists he will look to be himself at Emirates Stadium, but there are a number of stars that he looks up to

Albert Sambi Lokonga is settling in at Arsenal on the back of an £18 million ($25m) move to Emirates Stadium, and the highly-rated 21-year-old has picked out the players he is most looking forward to working with in north London.

Mikel Arteta has bought into the Belgian midfielder's potential as the Gunners look to build for the present and future with shrewd signings and important contract renewals.

Lokonga forms part of that process and is hoping to catch the eye in 2021-22 alongside established stars and exciting youngsters.

What has been said?

Asked by Arsenal Media to pick out those he is eager to link up with, Lokonga said: "I think [Nicolas] Pepe [is the one I am most excited to link up with].

"But I’m also looking forward to playing with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, [Alexandre] Lacazette, [Bukayo] Saka also, so yeah, I hope to have a connection with all the players and quickly."

Who are Lokonga's role models?

The highly-rated youngster is very much his own man and insists that he will be treading his own path with Arsenal, rather than following in any footsteps.

There are, however, a number of legendary performers that he has looked to for inspiration when forging his own career in the midfield engine room.

Naming those he looks up to, Lokonga added: "I never wanted to be like a player, I always wanted to be Sambi, so I took a little bit of all the players I used to watch.

"I never said to myself that you need to be like this player, I always wanted to be Sambi and to do Sambi on the pitch.

"If I had to tell you some players, I will say [Sergio] Busquets, Xavi, [Andres] Iniesta, [Luka] Modric, yeah, all the top players, Marco Veratti as well. All the top players."

Arsenal are currently preparing for friendly derby dates with London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham, with a Premier League season opener against Brentford set to be taken in on August 13.

Lukaku 'thrilled to be back' at Inter as striker returns to training following summer transfer rumours

The Belgian is fully focused on helping the Nerazzurri build on their 2020-21 Serie A triumph under new head coach Simone Inzaghi

Romelu Lukaku is "thrilled to be back" at Inter after returning to training following persistent summer transfer rumours.

Lukaku has solidified his reputation as one of the top strikers in Europe since joining Inter from Manchester United for £74 million ($102m) in 2019, scoring 64 goals in his first 95 outings across all competitions for the Italian giants.

The 28-year-old fired the Nerazzurri to their first Serie A title in 11 years last term, and has since been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League, with former club Chelsea and Manchester City both reportedly interested in his services.

What's been said?

However, Lukaku has reaffirmed his commitment to Inter after reporting for pre-season training, having enjoyed a much-needed break following his exploits at Euro 2020 with Belgium.

"I did get to relax, but I’ve also been training to stay fit and be able to start [the season] well," he told the club's official media channel

"We now have a few weeks to prepare as well as we can for the new campaign. We hope to do well and achieve even more than last year.

"I’m thrilled to be back. We hope to continue down the path that we’ve started and to keep winning. All the players will work hard to make your dreams come true."

Inter's stance on Lukaku

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has insisted that Lukaku will be staying put for the duration of the 2021-22 campaign, which will see Simone Inzaghi usher in a new era after replacing Antonio Conte as head coach.

“From our side, Lukaku is not for sale," Marotta said last week. "Lukaku is an important piece on the chessboard available to Simone Inzaghi.”

Lukaku on Inzaghi

Lukaku went on to express his belief that Inzaghi is the right man to take Inter forward, having received positive feedback on the 45-year-old's management style from his brother Jordan, who played under him at Lazio.

"We had a good chat on the day that the club announced that he was going to be the new coach and we also spoke when I was at the Euros," he said. "My brother has also told me plenty about him.

"He’s a good coach. I think he’ll help the team achieve so much. We hope we can all work together to continue down the path that we’ve started."

Katsande to leave Kaizer Chiefs? - Ex-Zimbabwe captain's agent responds to rumours

The Glamour Boys are believed to have already found a replacement for the tough-tackling midfield maestro

Kaizer Chiefs star Willard Katsande's agent has commented on reports indicating that the veteran midfielder has been released by the club.

It is has been said that the former Zimbabwe captain's contract with the Soweto giants will not be renewed beyond the current month.

Katsande was one of the Chiefs players who were handed short-term deals to participate in the Caf Champions League final against Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly earlier this month.

His agent, Sean Roberts, made it clear that he was in the dark regarding Katsande's rumoured departure from the Naturena-based giants.

“Nothing has been said to me. As soon as he leaves you are more than welcome to give me a call,” Roberts told Sowetan.

“I need to speak to the player and the club and see what’s happening. His contract expired, so we will meet with the club.”

Katsande is one of the longest-serving players at Chiefs having joined the Glamour Boys from Ajax Cape Town - now known as Cape Town Spurs - in July 2011.

The tough-tackling 35-year-old has helped Amakhosi clinch two PSL titles, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8 during his time with the four-time PSL champions.

Amakhosi have reportedly decided not to extend Katsande's contract due to the imminent arrival of Cole Alexander.

Alexander, who recently parted ways with Indian club Odisha FC, is said to be seen as a replacement for Katsande at the Soweto giants.

The 30-year-old midfielder played under Chiefs' new head coach Stuart Baxter at Odisha and the duo also worked together at SupeSport United.

It is now believed that the British tactician is keen to reunite with Alexander at Chiefs as he looks to bring back the glory days at the ambitious club.

Chiefs have been one of the busiest PSL clubs in the current transfer window having signed seven players thus far.

Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, defenders Njabulo Ngcobo, Sfiso Hlanti, Sibusiso Mabiliso, and Austin Dube, midfielders Phathutshedzo Nange and Kgaogelo Sekgota have all joined the Glamour Boys in the current transfer window.

Amakhosi are expected to make more new signings having also been linked with Keagan Dolly, who is a free agent having left Ligue 1 club Montpellier after his contract expired on June 30.

Ferdinand asks 'the real question' of Varane ahead of £41m Man Utd transfer

The former Red Devils defender believes a World Cup winner can succeed at Old Trafford, but admits that he needs to adapt quickly

Rio Ferdinand has been asking "the real question" of Raphael Varane ahead of his £41 million ($57m) move to Manchester United, with a World Cup-winning defender warned that the Premier League will be like nothing he has ever seen before.

A France international centre-half proven at the very highest level is closing in on a big-money transfer to Old Trafford, with Goal learning that a fee has finally been agreed in a long-running saga.

Varane is now set to undergo a medical in England and finalise a switch away from Real Madrid, where he has spent the last 10 years, with a new challenge being taken on that will provide an entirely different test to that he has grown accustomed to in La Liga.

What has been said?

Former United defender Ferdinand believes the Frenchman will thrive with the Red Devils, but has told his FIVE YouTube channel of a calculated gamble: "On paper it looks a very, very good combination, but he’s got to understand the English game is very different. You’ve got to go to Burnley and places like that.

"Sometimes it can be up and at ’em, a different style of football in the Premier League to anything he’s played in before.

"Can he deal with it? They’re the questions he’s going to get asked.

"Balls getting wrapped around his ear holes, crosses from different angles that he hasn’t seen on a consistent basis in Spain where they play more on the floor, slower football, slower build up.

"So he’s going to be asked to defend in a different way and that’s where he’s going to have to show his real class, can he adapt? That's the real question.

"I genuinely believe he’s got the tools to do that."

What is the deal for Varane?

Goal understands the base fee is £34m ($47m) plus £7m ($9m) in add-ons, meaning United could shell out as much as £41m.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, will pay a solidarity payment of £1m to the defender's former club Lens.

Personal terms have already been agreed, meaning that Varane is now free to complete a deal that will see him link up with England star Harry Maguire in the heart of the Red Devils' defence.

Reinforcements in that area had been a top priority for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer, with another top talent being snapped up alongside exiting winger Jadon Sancho in what is shaping up to be a productive window at Old Trafford.

Ayunga: Morecambe FC snap up Bristol Rovers forward

The 24-year-old Kenyan forward was unveiled by the Shrimps on a two-year contract ahead of the new season

Kenyan international John Ayunga has sealed a transfer to League One side Morecambe FC from Bristol Rovers.

The 24-year-old was unveiled by the Lancashire-based outfit on Monday after agreeing to pen a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

“Morecambe is delighted to announce the signing of striker Jonah Ayunga for an undisclosed fee from Bristol Rovers on a two-year deal,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“The 24-year-old made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Gas last season, 31 of which came in League One.

“Ayunga, who received his first international call up for Kenya in 2016, has also enjoyed spells with Dorchester Town, Sutton United, and Havant & Waterlooville.”

Speaking after signing the deal, Ayunga promised to repay the club's faith with top-class displays in the new season.

“I’m happy to be here, my first day went well and I’m looking to get settled in,” Ayunga told the same portal.

“It’s happened very quickly, three or four days ago I had no idea it was going to happen!

“I had a chat with the gaffer here and he’s convinced me to come, he said he’s been aware of me for a couple of years.

“It was good to make my League One debut last year and get a good amount of games, so knowing what it takes is what I’m going to bring to the team.”

On his part, manager Stephen Robinson revealed why he signed Ayunga: “I’m delighted, Jonah’s a boy I’ve kept tabs on since Bristol Rovers signed him and he has a lot of good attributes.

“He is a big, strong boy, he can run in behind, and there are aspects of his game we know we can improve, he’s still young and there’s a lot of potential in him.

“I’m trying to get two in every position and within our budget it’s difficult, but we’ve managed to do that in a short space of time, people are starting to gel and understand, and I think Jonah just adds to that.”

Ayunga, who becomes the Shrimps’ 14th signing this summer, moved to Bristol Rovers for an undisclosed fee on July 2020, and he made his debut for the club on September 5, 2020, in a 3-0 League Cup defeat to Ipswich Town.

Born in England to a Kenyan father and English mother, he represents Kenya internationally and was handed his first call-up to the Harambee Stars on August 5, 2016.

USWNT vs Australia: TV channel, live stream, team news & preview

Both teams can qualify for the last eight of the Olympics, after picking up one win apiece so far

The U.S. women's national team takes on Australia in its final group game at the Olympics, knowing a draw would seal progress to the next stage.

With the two highest-placed third-placed teams qualifying for the quarter-finals, a draw could also be enough for Australia to advance.

Ahead of the game, Goal has the details of how to watch on TV, stream online, team news and more.

TV channel, live stream & how to watch

In the United States (US), this year's USWNT Olympics soccer games can be watched live and on-demand with fuboTV (watch with a 7-day free trial).

New users can sign up for a free seven-day trial of the live sports streaming service, which can be accessed via iOS, Android, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Apple TV as well as on a web browser.

Team news & rosters

Position USWNT roster

Defenders Dahlkemper, Davidson, Dunn, Krueger, O'Hara, Sauerbrunn, Sonnett
Midfielders Ertz, Horan, Lavelle, Macario, K Mewis, S Mewis
Forwards Heath, Lloyd, Morgan, Press, Rapinoe, Williams

Despite losing its opening game 3-0 to Sweden, the USWNT is in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals.

Four different U.S. players found the scoresheet against New Zealand, with the USWNT bouncing back thanks to a 6-1 victory.

Coach Vlatko Andonovski now has to decide wich players will play in the final group game, especially with qualification on the line.

Captain Becky Sauerbrunn is expected to return to the starting XI, while Julie Ertz looks fit after her injury.

Predicted USWNT starting XI: Naeher, O'Hara, Dahlkemper, Sauerbrunn, Dunn, Lavelle, Ertz, Horan, Press, Morgan, Rapinoe.

Position Australia roster
Goalkeepers Williams, Micah, Arnold
Defenders Polkinghorne, Kennedy, Catley, Carpenter, Nevin, Grant, Brock
Midfielders Cooney-Cross, Luik, Logarzo, Kellond-Knight, Van Egmond, Yallop
Forwards Kerr, Foord, Fowler, Gielnik, Raso, Simon

Australia also lost to Sweden in the Olympics group, but a win over local rivals New Zealand puts it in good shape heading into the last game.

Like the USWNT, a point will probably be enough to qualify, but a win over the U.S. could provide an easier fixture in the quarter-finals.

Sam Kerr has scored three goals so far in the tournament and will lead the line once more, but coach Tony Gustavsson could be forced to rotate some players after making just one change to his starting XI so far.

Predicted Australia starting XI:  Williams, Carpenter, Polkinghorne, Catley, Raso, van Egmond, Luik, Yallop, Simon, Kerr, Foord.

San Jose Earthquakes legend Shea Salinas to retire after 2022 MLS season

The match will take place in the U.S. on Sept. 5

Liga MX rivals Club America and Chivas have announced a friendly on Sept. 5 that will commemorate Mexican independence.

The match will take place in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl during an international break, with capacity expected to reach up to 90,000 fans.

It will be a more relaxed preview of the Super Clasico set to occur two weeks later at the Estadio Azteca midway through the Apertura schedule.

What is happening?

How have America and Chivas started the 2021-22 campaign?

Neither side fared well in their opener, with America drawing with Queretaro and Chivas suffering a 2-1 defeat to Atletico San Luis despite holding 70 percent of possession.

America, under the still relatively new coaching regime of Santiago Solari, is considered a leading title favorite and will look to right the ship on Saturday against Necaxa, while Chivas will next meet Puebla on Friday.

Arteta: Willian is starting to show why Arsenal signed him

The Spaniard infamously refused to leave the Wembley pitch ahead of an ultimate penalty shootout defeat, with his manager left fuming on the night

Kepa Arrizabalaga has reiterated his remorse for his "big misunderstanding" during the 2019 Carabao Cup Final, issuing another apology to then-coach Maurizio Sarri for his part in Chelsea's defeat to Manchester City.

The shot-stopper infamously refused to depart the pitch after being signalled for a substitution late on in extra-time ahead for Willy Caballero, ahead of a penalty shootout reverse against Pep Guardiola's side at Wembley.

The incident sparked widespread discussion worldwide in the immediate aftermath, but now, two years later, the Spaniard has sought to further clarify the events that unfurled that day while offering another apology.

What has been said?

"Let’s just deal with that here once and for all," Kepa wrote in the Player's Tribune. "It was all a big misunderstanding. After making a save, I felt something in my leg and I called for the physio to make sure it was nothing. Above all, though, I wanted to make sure that we as a team could catch our breath.

"Suddenly, I saw that the coach, Maurizio Sarri, had sent Willy Caballero to warm up. He thought I couldn't go on. My intention, right or wrong, had only been to waste time to help the team. I didn’t have any serious problem that was going to keep me from continuing to play.

"I tried to signal that I was OK, that I wasn’t injured. But we were at Wembley in front of more than 80,000 people, so of course Sarri didn’t understand me. When the fourth official raised the board, clearly I should have come off, and I’m sorry I didn’t.

"I was wrong, and I am sorry for everyone who was involved: for Maurizio Sarri, who it seemed like I had undermined in public; for Willy, a team-mate and a great professional; and for all my team-mates and Chelsea fans who had to put up with everything - all the noise that was generated during the game and then in the days after."

What happened in the 2019 Carabao Cup Final?

Having played out a goalless draw in regular time - and with neither side able to break the deadlock - Sarri made the choice to signal for Caballero to prepare for a penalty shootout, with the Argentine having previously won the competition as City's shotstopper in 2016.

Kepa's refusal to depart left his manager fuming, with Sarri almost departing down the tunnel following the incident, ahead of the subsequent shootout.

City went on to win 4-3, with the Spaniard managing to save only Leroy Sane's effort from the spot.

The bigger picture

Since exiled as nominal first-choice keeper at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel, Kepa nevertheless remains a key squad player for the German and was a member of the Blues squad that won the Champions League last season, behind Edouard Mendy.

He previously made amends for his Carabao Cup misfire with a superb performance in the 2019 Europa League Final, to hand Sarri his only honour during his brief spell at Chelsra.

With the Blues looking to push on and challenge for more silverware this term, the Spaniard may find his chances restricted, though he looks set to remain with the club for the new campaign.

Transfer Talk: Real Madrid try again for Mbappe as Bellingham chase continues

The 19-year-old striker is now in negotiations with the Turin club for next season

Santos starlet Kaio Jorge has refused a contract proposal from Benfica and is now in advanced negotiations with Juventus to join the Italian outfit in January 2022, Goal can confirm.

After Santos had accepted a transfer proposal from Benfica for the 19-year-old attacker, he personally rebuffed the approach with his mind dead set on Serie A.

Juventus will now evaluate whether they will try to sign Kaio Jorge from Santos with immediate effect this summer through a €1-2 million offer, or if they should wait to acquire him on a free in January.

How will the deal work?

Kaio Jorge can negotiate directly with interested parties, as there are less than six months left for the end of his contract, which runs until December. He is managed by Giuliano Bertolucci, who has been talking to Italian clubs.

Benfica's offer was direct to Santos, but because the player didn't agree to it, the deal could not go through.

If Kaio Jorge does transfer in January to Juventus, he would leave for free and Santos would not receive anything.

However, if there are talks for an immediate release in the August international transfer window, Santos would have to receive financial compensation.

NXGN background

Kaio Jorge was first mentioned by Goal's NXGN series covering the world's best prospects in March 2020, and he made the NXGN 2021 top-50 list this year, ranking as the 18th-best wonderkid.

Because Santos allowed his contract to run almost all the way down, they are unable to cash in on his hype through the transfer market in any substantial way.

FA Ready to Veto Project Big Picture

The Serie A club have secured the signing of the 61-year-old for their youth team based in the Nigerian capital

AS Roma Academy in Abuja have appointed former Nigeria U17 and U20 coach John Obuh as their new technical director.

The appointment was confirmed on Monday with a statement from the academy's country manager, Robin Adakosa.

Obuh has been without a coaching job since he left his role in Nigeria Professional Football League club Akwa United in December 2019.

The 61-year-old has distinguished himself in the area of youth development in football environment having led Nigeria to finish as runners-up at the 2009 Fifa U17 World Cup on home soil.

Adakosa believes Obuh’s wealth of experience will be a boost for Roma as they continue to nurture young talents.

“It was easy for us to pick Mr Obuh among numerous other people considered for the job because we believe he possesses the quality to drive the vision of our academy,” Adakosa said.

“The kids and other staff will have a lot to learn from him because we believe that he has seen it all as far as football is concerned, not only in Nigeria but globally.

“We believe that this new step is a bold statement to making sure that AS Roma Academy Abuja, becomes a source of talented youngsters for the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria and the Flying Eagles."

The Abuja outfit is one of the three international academies AS Roma manage across the world, after the ones in New York (USA) and Quito (Ecuador).

Obuh, a retired footballer, has enjoyed a nomadic coaching career in the Nigeria Professional Football League with stints at Akwa United, Kwara United, Sharks FC, Niger Tornadoes and Enugu Rangers.

12 years ago, he was in the dug-out when the Golden Eaglets suffered a 1-0 loss to Switzerland in the final of the U17 World Cup in Abuja.

Obuh later moved to the Flying Eagles and he led Nigeria U20 to two Fifa U20 World Cup tournaments, but they did not make it past the Round of 16 in 2011 and quarter-finals in 2013.

Brobbey confesses to Google search on new coach Marsch after RB Leipzig appointment

Having almost walked back on his move from Ajax, the teenager is now settled with his new club - though he needed to search his incoming boss first

RB Leipzig striker Brian Brobbey has admitted that he had to look up new coach Jesse Marsch online after he was confirmed as Julian Nagelsmann's successor at the Bundesliga outfit.

The 19-year-old forward signed for the club from Ajax in March, but almost walked back on his move after the German heavyweights confirmed a change of coach ahead of the new term.

Brobbey, however, has now revealed that Marsch convinced him to stay the course, though the now-settled teenager has admitted that he had to study who his boss was on the internet before he met him.

What has been said?

“When it was clear that Jesse was going to be the new coach, I first checked the internet!" Brobbey told Bild. "I wanted to know how he played and I saw his speech from the game with Salzburg in Liverpool.

“It was a little strange for me because [Nagelsmann] said he was staying. But I had a good conversation with Jesse and he's a very good coach. Now we speak almost every day. I'm glad I'm here."

“I have to train hard every day and show myself to offer myself to the coach. Then he has to decide who to put up. But I want to be important to the team."

The bigger picture

Brobbey's move from the Eredivisie out east represents the latest step in the Netherlands youth starlet's career, and comes on the back of a domestic double with Ajax.

He joins a Leipzig side looking to put Nagelsmann's exit to Bayern Munich behind them and push on under Marsch, as they aim to further consolidate a position as title contenders at home and abroad.

Brobbey may well get a chance to impress against his old side before then, however, when Leipzig meet Ajax in a pre-season friendly at the end of July.

Petit slams 'ridiculous' Arsenal transfer business & tells Arteta to clear 'half the dressing room out'

The centre-back is set to make the move to Old Trafford after the two clubs agreed a fee for the 28-year-old on Monday.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign centre-back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, Goal understands.

It is understood that the two clubs have reached an agreement of £35 million ($48m) plus add ons for the defender and he is expected to complete his transfer after a medical.

Varane will become United’s second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Jadon Sancho, who United reached an agreement to sign earlier in the month for £73m ($100m).

What do we know?

There was progress made in negotiations between the two clubs over the weekend, with agreements reached on personal terms and a final agreement reached on a fee on Monday.

Goal understands the fee is £35m ($48m) plus add-ons but Real Madrid will pay a £1m solidarity payments to Lens, his former club, taking it down to £34m ($47m).

The deal is now subject to a medical, with Varane set to become United's second signing of the summer upon its completion.

Why does Solskjaer want Varane?

The United manager has been targeting a right-sided centre-back to strengthen his back line and said after the pre-season friendly defeat to Queens Park Rangers at the weekend that they need to improve defensively.

Harry Maguire has been a rock at the back since arriving and it is likely Varane will partner the England international.

The 28-year-old only had one year left on his deal at Madrid and made it clear he was not interested in signing a new one as he was keen for a new challenge in Manchester. With that in mind, the Liga side have decided to cash in rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

What next for United?

Solskjaer is keen on signing a right-back, with discussions having taken place with Kieran Trippier, while a central midfielder is also on the shopping list. However, there is an acceptance that while there are funds, they are not unlimited - and it may not be possible to land all potential targets in the current window.

A deal for Sancho was wrapped up relatively early meaning United have five weeks left of the summer window to work on strengthening and finalising the squad for the new campaign.

Paul Pogba’s future is still up in the air, with club and player yet to agree terms over a new contract. Solskjaer said talks are ongoing with Pogba’s representatives but the club risk losing the midfielder on a free transfer next summer if he does not put pen to paper on a fresh deal.

The young winger opens up on his transfer away from Nordsjaelland and what informed his decision

Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana has revealed that the potential of limited playing time at Ajax had impacted his decision to choose Rennes as his new club.

The 19-year-old was the subject of an intense transfer battle between the two clubs, having caught attention with outstanding displays in the Danish Superliga for Nordsjaelland.

Manchester United, Liverpool and German side Bayer Leverkusen were also mentioned in the race for his services.

“With Rennes, I get to play in Ligue 1 which is one of the best leagues in the whole world, so that’s enough of my reason,” Kamaldeen said when asked about his decision to reject Ajax, during his official unveiling on Monday.

“And I think I chose here based on my playing time and I think there’s a better chance of me playing more here than any other place, and I’ll play against great teams here as well.”

Last season, Kamaldeen netted 10 times and registered four assists in the Belgian top division.

It was just his second season of professional football, having joined Nordsjaelland from Ghanaian outfit Right to Dream Academy.

“I chose Rennes because when I came for the visit, I spoke to coach [Bruno Genesio] and I spoke to [technical director] Florian [Maurice] and the project was very interesting and was good for me, and I felt here was the right place for me,” he further explained.

“They have a lot of young talent and they have produced a lot of good talent outside, the likes of [Ousmane] Dembele, a lot of players, [Eduardo] Camavinga, Jeremy Doku.

“And some Ghanaians also played here, like Asamoah Gyan who is like the top scorer in Ghana history. And I felt this is the place for me to be, also to improve myself and get to where I want to be in future."

Ghana legend Gyan played for Rennes between 2008 and 2010 before leaving for English side Sunderland after a fine 2010 World Cup campaign.

Did Kamaldeen speak to the striker as he weighed his move to the French fold where he would sign a five-year deal reportedly worth €20 million?

“I didn’t speak to any player from Ghana who played here,” the winger responded when asked whether he spoke to the veteran forward who now plays club football back in Ghana.

“The only player I spoke to is [Michael] Essien because he is a coach in FC Nordsjaelland and he’s also my neighbour, so we spoke about this league.

"And of course he played in Bastia with Florian and also played in Lyon, so I also spoke to him about the league here and how interesting it could be for my development.”

Kamaldeen could make his competitive Rennes debut when they host Lens in matchweek one of Ligue 1 on August 8.
